Local & indie: My top 10 of ' 09
December 19, 2008
The Cool Kids cook up block-rockin' beats.
E. Jason Wambsgans/Tribune Tim Kinsella and his band Joan of Arc get warm and fuzzy on "Boo Human."
Dark aggression and psychedelic overtones are what you get from Nachtmystium's latest CD, "Assassins: Black Meddle Part I."
Alex Garcia/Tribune At the end of each year, Turn It Up focuses on the best of the best from Chicago's independent music scene. Several of these artists will be playing in the next few weeks (consult individual entries for details). Here are my 10 favorite local indie releases for 2008:
1 Shot Baker, "Take Control" (Riot Fest/Underground): In the melodic hardcore-punk tradition of Chicago's mighty Naked Raygun, this quartet delivers straight-up, no-nonsense, guitar-driven anthems that reaffirm and thoroughly reinvigorate the spirit of '82. (Jan. 2 with Naked Raygun at House of Blues, 329 N. Dearborn St., $21.50; 312-923-2000.)
2 Nachtmystium, "Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1" (Century Media): Veteran quartet led by iconoclastic singer-guitarist Blake Judd just keeps getting better with each release, topped by this mighty blast of dark aggression cut with psychedelic overtones and dramatic mood swings.
3 The Cool Kids, "The Bake Sale" (Chocolate Industries): After building a following with MySpace singles and old-school club shows, Chuck Inglish and Mikey Rocks offer this 10-song EP as a prelude to a 2009 album. It collects Internet hits "88," "Black Mags" and "Gold and a Pager," in which clever tag-team vocals and block-rockin' beats inspire memories of hip-hop's Golden Age.
4 Local H, "Twelve Angry Months" (Shout Factory): Kanye West wasn't the first guy with Chicago roots to craft a great album about a bad break-up this year. Scott Lucas beat him to the punch with this gut-wrenching yet cathartic song cycle. Brian St. Clair's walloping drums insure that any hint of self-pity never intrudes on the rock. (Dec. 31 at Bottom Lounge, 1375 W. Lake St., $35; 312-929-2022.)
5 Ezra Furman and the Harpoons, "Inside the Human Body" (Minty Fresh): The second disc from this 22-year-old Evanston native and his band feels like a rickety ride on one of those old wooden roller-coasters; you're not entirely sure the journey will end safely. Music's a life-and-death struggle to make sense of the world, with Furman's wobbly voice and hard-strumming guitar driving everything harder and faster, no matter what the cost.
6 The Sea and Cake, "Car Alarm" (Thrill Jockey): The band's unerring taste can't be faulted, but on the quartet's eighth album, it blends studio-as-instrument texture with the rock punch of its earliest releases. It's a blend that provides an excellent summing up of what has made Sam Prekop, Archer Prewitt, Eric Claridge and John McEntire one of Chicago's best bands for so long.
7 Radius, "Neighborhood Suicide" (The Secret Life of Sound): South Side DJ Ramon Norwood takes the listener on a city tour, and his chilled, soul-infused club beats paint a cinematic picture that evokes "Humboldt Park" and "Bucktown" like we've never heard them before. (Friday at Subterranean, 2011 W. North Ave., $5; 773-278-6600.)
8 Al Rose, "My First Posthumous Release" (Monkey Holding Peach Records): Perhaps in a different era, Rose would've been a fixture on the North Side folk circuit alongside John Prine and Steve Goodman. As it is, his sharply detailed, often wickedly witty songs easily shift among genre boundaries with luminously orchestrated arrangements. He's been doing it, and doing it well, for two decades. (Dec. 26 at Uncommon Ground, 1401 W. Devon Ave., 773-465-9801)
9 Joan of Arc, "Boo Human" (Polyvinyl): Tim Kinsella unravels some of the knots in his music and a decade into his band's career makes his warmest album. Though the harmonics are far from rote, intimacy prevails, and Kinsella expresses himself more directly than ever. Kinsella has now come almost full circle with an album that is indeed his most directly emotional, without the hysterics.
10 Bound Stems, "The Family Afloat" (Flameshovel): The jigsaw puzzle songs never feel labored or forced; the logic of the arrangements flowing from a quintet that respects catchy melodies even as it detests obviousness.
greg@gregkot.com Greg Kot cohosts "Sound Opinions" at 8 p.m. Fridays and 11 a.m. Saturdays on WBEZ-FM 91.5.
