This is my painting for the Crazy 4 Cult show at Gallery 1988

at 7020 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles CA.

The artists were given a list of cult films to choose from and we were given very little art direction beyond that. Over a hundred different interpretations of cult movie icons will be on display. Check the gallery website for details.         www.nineteeneightyeight.com

I had a fun time painting it, . . . I remember seeing Eraserhead for the first time in the dorms at Pratt Institute. My friend Egon tried to explain the movie to me, . . . I wasn't really listening, . . .the imagery was so strange for me at the time. Years later, I can still hear a voice in the back of my mind saying, "chickens as big as my fist" Still brings a smile to my face.

I was recruiting artists for a show I'm curating at an art gallery in Santa Monica. One of the artists I was contacting, informed me of the attitude her gallery director  in DC had about the galleries I show my work in. It angered me. He was suggesting that she distance herself from the "Low Brow" galleries that I show my work in because the perception is that this art is something "less", . . . less than what?, . . .

Well, . . . for starters, the artwork in these galleries has evolved, . . . there really isn't as much "Low Brow" art in those galleries anymore , . . . I like to use Pop Surrealism. It is a term that sits better with most of us.

That fella in DC should do his homework. We are all in this together, . . . there's no need to cultivate such  a negative characterization of any kind. This "us vs them" attitude helps no one.  Artwork should stand on its own merit. If people are making a connection to the work and it's starting to get more publicity, why go out of your way to discredit it? What does anyone have to gain with this strategy?  He should concentrate his efforts on promoting the artwork he shows at his space a little more positively.  Is he stupid enough to think that we don't communicate with other artists and  that his gallery is immune from the negative affect his attitude perpetuates?

This is a picture from a Les Claypool show in LA (I Think)

I did the cover art for his Fancy DVD last year and I found out it was used as

banners behind his stage.

If any of you out there have better pictures of this let me know

Also, I remember seeing someone with an image of my painting "Frank" as a tattoo on their arm a year or so ago, . . . I'm very flattered by that, . . .if anyone has any photos of my images as tattoos please forward them to me, . . . I'd like to post them on my website. Thanks!!
