The Inwood Radio – www.inwoodradio.com / www.myspace.com/inwoodradio

Blending pop sensibility with straight ahead rock undertones, The Inwood
Radio, recently released their sophomore album "Sickle Cell Bohemia," called "one of the better local albums I’ve heard so far in 2009" by howwastheshow.com.

The Inwood Radio is Ben and Will Rajkowski, Amy (Bukstein) Rajkowski, and Ted Held.

Quilombolas – www.quilombolas.com / www.myspace.com/quilombolas

Quilombolas is a multicultural Minneapolis based world-fusion rock band combining diverse musical influences from around the globe. The members draw inspiration from Zumbi and the Quilombos of old as a sign of unity in the face of the many forms of oppression that still exist today. Politically charged lyrics add to the fire of their musical activism, while a constant vibe of unity and celebration abounds. In addition, lyrics can be heard in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Hebrew, and some African tongues like Yoruba. The band combines all of these elements with the belief that all people are multiethnic and mutlicultural mixes and should celebrate the diversity that unites and strengthens the quilombo.

“The band’s style is passionate, satirical, and very entertaining. Blending Brazilian rhythms, hip-hop, Israeli melodies, and funk, Quilombolas create a unique sound with smart lyrics and a danceable beat." -Sheila Regan, TC Daily Planet

"These guys are serious to the bone with cold-blooded chops. Their groove has a Band of Gypsys feel-–sharp, elemental funk with wizened, coat-pulling lyrics." -Dwight Hobbes, The Pulse

Quilombolas is Matt Levitt, Eric S.B., Lew Hill, and Luis Pereira.

Days of Rae – www.daysofrae.com / www.myspace.com/daysofrae

Days of Rae came together to work on a songwriting project for Minnesota Public Radio in the summer of 2008. The product of that endeavor was the song The Gilded Road which received enthusiastic praise, including an MPR.org feature spotlight and radio airplay. Their live sound is clean, rich and thoroughly entertaining. Their songs range from delicate and controlled in Dynamic is Static to the driving, in-your-face honesty of Act III and The Leonard Situation. Each song tells a story. This is a genuine work-horse band that put the thought, the time and the heart into making their music.

Days of Rae is Cherie and Shon Cobbs, Ryan Pula, and Clint Trotter

TRU RUTS/SPEAKEASY RECORDS presents 'THE COMMON PAST'

DEBUT ALBUM from Global Fusion Group QUILOMBOLAS

March
3rd marks the official release of, The Common Past,
the long awaited debut album of global fusion group,
Quilomobolas, and the 10th album release from
innovative underground record label, Tru Ruts/Speakeasy Records. Called
‘the auditory equivalent of a really tasty fusion
restaurant’, the multilingual band melds Afro-Brazilian,
Rock, World Beat, Afro-Funk and Hip Hop sounds. Appreciated for the new
sound they've brought to the Minneapolis scene, critics have called
them “...as intriguing a trio as you're apt to come by for
quite a while. These guys are serious to the bone with cold-blooded
chops. Their groove has a Band of Gypsys feel - sharp, elemental funk
with wizened, coat-pulling lyrics.” (Dwight Hobbes).

Members of the group share a diasporic
background that includes Brazilian, African American and Israeli
ancestry. Shelia Regan, of the Twin Cities Daily Planet, writes,
“True to the spirit of their name, the Minneapolis band
Quilombolas have a sense of defiance, and also a sense of freedom. The
band's style is passionate, satirical, and very entertaining. Blending
Brazilian rhythms, hip-hop, Israeli melodies, and funk, Quilombolas
create a unique sound with smart lyrics and a danceable
beat.” Lead singer, Eric Silva Berimba comments,
“Quilombolas' music is about blending, mixture, and harmony.
It is music that doesn't conveniently fit into one particular genre,
but fuses many styles. A musical feijoada or jambalaya.”

The album co-produced by Paul Harding, of Near and Far Records,
features performances by Maria Isa (Sota Rico) and
Rodrigo Sanchez-Chavarria (Palabristas). Reminiscent
of albums of the 60s and 70s, mixing musicality with a message, with a
new twist for a new time, the album doesn't pull any punches in its
lyrics. Berimba comments, “Lyrics for 'Quero a Paz' were
written in a cemetery in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2003 shortly before
attacks on Iraq began. An eerie premonition of things to come...There's
still plenty of work to do regarding liberty and equality for all but
making politically conscious multilingual music is the vision behind
the work.” Tru Ruts label exec, e.g. bailey, adds
“With it's melding of varied traditions and cultures, the
essence of Quilombolas and it's music is the striving for a more humane
world.”

Celebrating the global legacy of unity
and diversity, Quilombolas is ready to make its mark with this first
offering. It's sure to draw fans of established acts such as Ozomatli,
Michael Franti, Manu Chao, Kassin+2, Chico Science,
Nação Zumbi and others. Rob Van Alstyne writes,
“…the global pop mash up masters in local outfit
Quilombolas blend funky horns, traditional Latin American rhythms and
hip hop into a worldly mixture of sounds that's hard to neatly
categorize but easy to enjoy and certain to appeal to fans of similarly
ambitious groups like Ozomatli.” The album is available at
Electric Fetus, Cheapos, Fifth Element, CD Baby and directly from Tru
Ruts at http://www.myspace.com/truruts">myspace.com/truruts.

                                Rock inspired-Global music ensemble,
Quilombolas, has been steadily building an audience over the last
several years, and has been featured at the Twin Cities' Afrifest, the
Earthfusion Festival, on Fox 9 Morning News, in addition to
collaborating with noted Twin Cities artists including Maria Isa,
Truthmaze, e.g. bailey, Rodrigo Sanchez-Chavarria, and others. They
recently featured at the Mid American Music Festival, the Ripple Effect
festival and Vive Minnesota! El Festival, in addition to opening for PM
Dawn.

Kassin + 2

Rick Mason

Kassin + 2

Brazil's Kassin + 2 could more properly be called the Plus 2 Trio, which consists of Alexandre Kassin, bassist, guitarist, keyboardist, singer, and one of the hottest producers in Brazil; drummer/vocalist Domenico Lancellotti; and Moreno Veloso, guitarist, singer, and son of Brazilian music icon Caetano Veloso. The band's name shifts according to who takes the lead on its latest project, which currently is Futurismo (Luaka Bop), the third installment of a rambunctious trilogy that essentially carries the principles of tropicalismo, the revolutionary fusion of Brazilian roots and international influences co-founded by the elder Veloso, far into the 21st century. That means a strong core of bossa nova, samba, and more esoteric Brazilian elements mashed together in wide-ranging permutations with pop and dance beats from multiple continents, rock from garage as well as art studio, echoes of the Caribbean as well as noire westerns, all nudged, prodded, and shocked with sampling, loops, and other electronica flourishes. By turns lyrical and experimental, the trio can induce rock 'n' roll mayhem as well as dance-floor workouts. The local quartet Quilombolas also draws inspiration from diverse sources, including samba, funk, rock, and hip hop, with a particular nod to the late Chico Science's Pernambucan mangue beat.

http://www.culturebully.com/eric-silva-brenneman-of-quilombolas-on-music-and-arts-education

How did you get into making music, and how did arts education (or lack thereof) affect you and your music?

My parents would most likely respond that I've been performing in one way or the other since I was a very young child. As a toddler I would always ask for certain records while I was bouncing around on a little horse. The music was my babysitter. I was also fortunate to grow up in a very musical family on both sides. From my paternal grandmother who has been teaching piano for seventy some odd years (and continues to do so…), to my aunt who got me started around age four, to my uncles in South America who combine multiple bottles of liquor and multiple instruments and then jam all night at the barbecue (and continue to do so…).

As I mentioned, I started on piano with my Aunt Barb, but after a few years, I discovered the cello and from there, I couldn't put it down. As time passed, I learned the trumpet, which later turned into the euphonium (baritone). I kind of pushed myself to run around the orchestra and try to learn the basics of everything. This payed off as I was elected drum major of my high school marching band my last two years. In my early teens, music in Nebraska took on a very different meaning when I discovered Nebraska's greatest cultural export right as they were leaving to make it big in California: 311. In addition, for a teen, The Edge was just a little cooler than NPR Classical Radio. Between 311 and similar bands, to the dismay of my private cello teacher, it pushed me and other very talented teens to start rocking. Drums and guitars were all over, nobody played bass guitar. I figured with my cello background I'd go for it, and I found my place (though I love playing drums and guitar too!).

I had dabbled in composition and songwriting as a kid, but I really started to put it together as a teen. I started writing music for cello and for the rock bands I was playing in. Mind you, most of it wasn't that good, but it was a good foundation. I do remember this cello solo my aunt and I wrote as tribute to the sudden death of a beloved teacher of mine. In fact, she taught my aunt and dad too, so it was pretty special to put that together for her memory. From there, I just kept building the house.

Arts education was absolutely fundamental in my development as a professional musician. There is no way I would be where I'm at today without the musical knowledge I gained from the amazing and very patient teachers I was blessed with from elementary to high school. I am a product of both public school music education and private lessons that focused on the Suzuki method. While private lessons were intense and enabled me at one point to travel around the Mid-West competing and have some great accomplishments, the public school music teachers were the ones that taught me how to play the instruments, would stay after school to answer my questions, and most importantly, taught me how to play in ensembles and work with many different people on many different instruments. In a sea of very competitive, driven, and many times socially-awkward music kids, I was pretty easy going. Maybe too easy going; I think it sometimes annoyed my private cello teacher, Dr. Johnson (RIP). He certainly taught me a lot, but being cool among other musicians was not something I learned from him. That came from learning to balance the ego and learning to be a team player through Mr. Jank's orchestra, Mr. Crowl, Mr. Roebke, and Mr. Duensing's bands, and Mr. DeWalls' choir. It's kind of funny, when you think about what kills bands, it's not usually a question of talent. From garage bands to double platinum sell-out-the-Metrodome-bands, it's usually the ego battles. I've been pretty sensitive to this and have wondered where it came from. I must admit, in hindsight, it makes sense now.

To tie it all together, I would say that public music education is more important than any other "required" subject that politicians and administrators claim matter or need for their test scores. It's so much deeper than learning how to play an instrument and performing for your grandparents every couple of months. You learn socialization skills, you learn how to "harmonize" (pun intended!), and that is something you can carry and apply to anything else as life moves on, long after that trumpet gets filled with cobwebs. Where the hell is my trumpet anyway? Nebraska? I've got to get back at that bad boy!

More info about quilombos, history, revolution, and other good stuff that is important, but not directly a part of the band bio.

Liberty. Equality. Solidarity. In the face of slavery, intolerance, and violent racism during the European expansion in the Americas, these were the principles that guided the run-away slave founders of quilombos and palenques from Brazil, to Haiti, to Cuba, to the Lumbees and Seminoles in the U.S.  Many heroes and heroines emerged from the resistance of these harmonious multiethnic communities. In present times like these when elements in governments, religions, and certain communities seek to divide, oppress, and do not reflect people's true desires, we too may take inspiration from the past quilombolas so that we continue to fight for a brighter and more peaceful future. A future where cross-cultural understanding flourishes, nations disappear, and all that is left is the quilombo.

Quilombolas is a multicultural Minneapolis based world-fusion band combining diverse musical influences from around the globe with strong African roots such as hip-hop, reggae, samba, salsa, rock, funk, and other styles, to produce a unique multiethnic groove. Welcome to the quilombo. If you join, you too may call yourself a quilombola.
