Hi there everyone, just writing a few words to let you know what's been happening in the world of robot versus dinosaur.
Our main concern has been the acquisition of a projector with which our plan is to show artwork of local talent while we play... well the stuff we play. For this we need to thank Robin Lea who we assure will receive his cash soon. So anyone interested in submitting any images or video should get in touch. The hope is if there's enough material we can get some interaction between the music played and the visuals. If i don't get a lot of material of people, I'm going put on couple of nice looking films i've got such as Koyaanisqatsi (yes i've still got it annie). Long term we have big plans for the development of RVD in terms of visuals but such plans are encoded using the Riemann zeta function and kept under the sea in an adamantium casing. Even me and seb are not privy to the information, after a monster brain storming session we wrote our ideas down then forced ourselves to watch 24 hours of the OC then went to bed listening to Merzbow; a modern recipe for memory removal if there ever was one.
You may have noticed if you watch the BBC, that the majority of the background music played on documentaries and such programmes is contained within only a handful of albums, such is the dedication of the people in charge of such things. To my knowledge they only seem to own, Boards of Canada: music has the right to children, Aphex Twin: selected ambient works 2, Fourtet; Pause and maybe a couple of others that don't spring to mind. I'm suspect this has something to do with the admin involved in paying royalties to the relevant parties but when i see it deemed suitable to accompany a programme about harry potter, with the same music as a programme about famine in africa i can't help but feel that our subconscious is being done a disservice. Anyway with this in mind it was with my great pleasure to see that Top Gear; a show which seems to embody mainstream masculinity one week featured BATTLES, and a week later while I'm still chuffed to bits from this (it doesn't take a lot) i walk in the lounge and i hear the familiar sound of Autechre used to portrait the feeling you get when driving a really expensive car, Top Gear again. So thank you BBC, you're finally getting your act together on this matter, or at least beginning to. This however does not excuse the persistently poor programming they show on BBC1 which i assume receives the lions share of funding compared to 2,3, and 4, which consistently produce high quality entertainment. What i've ultimately taken away from this is the fact that i've been watching far to much TV and not listing to enough music.
So in terms of music for the next RVD i can only let you know what I'm planning to bring and assure you that this time it will be different to Seb. Aside from the usual stuff I'm going to try and push the boat out a bit and bring some Merzbow, and some Team Doyobi, both of which seem to not get a fair airing in... well anywhere i suppose. Also i've come to realize that the internet has made me very ignorant about the music i listen to; i download music either on recommendation or after seeing a brief description, then a month or so later the shuffle function on my ipod will get round to playing me it (yes i understand it's random an it's not actually getting around to anything) and i will have no idea where it came from. This maybe a good thing in an initial sense giving a hearing a quality unprimed by preconception, but ultimately i owe it to the artist to find out who they are, or have a rough idea at least. Among the music i know zilch about (including where i got it from) which i plan to play is Jega, The Sketch Show, Tosca, Somatic Responses, and Fingertwister. On the more ambient front i've been getting into Fennesz, and Oval as well as the usual staple of the offerings of the leaf label. It's taken me a while to listen to AFX's last release Analord, which was released only on numerous 12 inches, and is over 3 hours long. Most of it in all honestly, and in the words that most high profile of idiots lars ulrich is a bit stock, but there are some gems in there. That remained me i haven't played AFX's and the bug's run the place red... it's going to be great, I'm excited already.
We try and play a wide range of music, so we''ll inevitable miss a lot of great stuff, so if you have any suggestions, get in touch because we've a lot of stuff we don't bring along with us, or just bring a CD.

See you there
Ben

Cheers to everyone who came down and supported our first night, we couldn't have done it without you... The event was a real success, we got a great turnout and made quite a few new friends- whilst Brum blogger Pete Ashton has given us a superb write-up on his website (check out http://www.peteashton.com/06/04/20/robot_vs_dinosaur_wa.html), as well as taking some photos which are online at http://flickr.com/photos/peteashton/tags/robotvsdinosaur/

Anyway, we'll be holding our next event on Wednesday 17th May, once again at the Sunflower Lounge- we intend to make the next RvD even bigger and better than the last, so be sure to come down & check it out... spread the word, bring your friends along... and leave us a comment if you've got anything you'd like us to spin on the night!
