At the beginning of this month, Randall Nieman(Fuxa) flew out to record some covers and originals with Suki and myself.  Our pal Jason Johnson engineered the session for us at our rehearsal studio.  Here's some of the deets....In four days we.......

1. recorded basic tracks for 7 tunes
2. got a new president
3. Randall had Jack in the Box for the first time in 5 years TWICE
4. Suki wrote lyrics to a xmas song in 5 min. (I dare anyone to try that one.)

It's gonna be sent out to some pals for the proper treatments and mixing and be released on Mind Expansion sometime next year.  I put up some pics for anyone who cares to take a gander.

The Old Toy Trains ep is off for mastering this week.  There will be 500 copies 200 will be ltd ed handprinted sleeves also to be released on Mind Expansion in the new year.

Hope all are well and for you socal folks, are safe from the flames.

Best, Bo (((Old Toy Trains)))

Attacknine Family & Friends "Presence Under The Tree"

Label compilations are a tricky proposition, particularly for small, homegrown indies that don't have the benefit of a flagship (i.e., name) artist to attract the general public. While it's a common marketing ploy for such labels to offer exclusive tracks from their stable of artists at a discount price to attract folks to sample their wares, at just $6.99, this 2xCD set is the deal of the year. Chock full of 23 previously unreleased tracks from Attacknine artists and their friends (visit their website above to see who's who), the deal is even better when you realize that if you find an artist you like and want to pick up their full length, you don't already have two or three of the tracks on the sampler! So don't let your unfamiliarity with the artists prevent you from picking up this wonderful little Christmas present with the punny, holiday title. Each disk is given a separate title (disk 1: "Twilight;" disk 2: "Starlight"), so the mood is established for late night/early morning listening right from the get go.

Inside, you won't want to miss OwlBear's simple, frolicking, clapping singalong "See Wings," which sounds like it was recorded in front of a classroom of young grade school kids, and would make a fine addition to a grammar school Glee Club's catalog. A.P. English (Rob Barbato from Darker My Love) sleepwalks through "New England Rose," a druggy, heavy-lidded nodder in the fine tradition of Brian Jonestown Massacre's mellower moments. For those unfamiliar with the label, they are distributed by Darla and the vibe throughout is similar to Darla's rostrum. Indeed, "Presence Under The Tree" has the same laidback, lightweight pop groove of Darla's own "Little Darla Has A Treat For You" series of compilations, although Attacknine artists are a bit softer and melancholic – perfect for cuddling up in front of a fireplace with some incense and other mental accoutrements.

Winter Flowers is one of the best of the new breed of wispy, twee, psych folk bands and they are represented by earlier versions of two tracks from their self-titled debut: "Misty Morning Land," a whispered little hushabye of a song, and the tinkling, xylophone melody of "Ivory Path," which leads off the "Starlight" disk. Fans of Espers, In Gowan Ring and Nick Castro will be very pleased indeed to welcome them into their arms and record collections. Other highlights of the "Twilight" disk include Hi-Fi's dreamy, waltzing "Sunday," with backwards and warped Hawaiian guitar flourishes in the wonderful style of Spacemen 3, Spiritualized and Spectrum, and Old Toy Trains' Lou Reed Goes Country on "Crow's Landing."

The "Starlight" disk picks up where "Twilight" leaves off with the same high quality, beginning with the beautiful, piano-driven melody of Women & Children's "Night Of The Rake (Sans Batterie)" that seems born from the melody of "Stairway To Heaven." I also liked the plucky, Ennio Morricone-ish twangy guitars of Orick's "Ichabod," the intimate, Red House Painter's aroma of Sewing Circle (aka Women & Children's Kevin Lasting)'s "Underneath The Dog." Gorgeous, glassy-eyed guitar work and whispered vocals make Canyon Country's "Honey & Gold" (presented here with the full live band) another welcome treasure, which often reminded me of Scott Appel and his Nick Drake fascination. (CC frontman Nick Huntington is a bit of an Attacknine everyman, represented as he is in three different incarnations: CC, Freescha and The Surf The Sundried, although only the former really excited me). Finally, Hi-Fi's gorgeous instrumental "Evening" bleeds Durutti Column all over its tenderly plucked strings, although dumping all the instros at the end of disk 2 (thereby seemingly relegating them to afterthought status) might not have been the brightest sequencing move. Still, I guess it does give the listener a chance to sit back and contemplate the preceding offerings and with almost every track a winner that I'll want to hear over and over again, "Presence Under The Tree," in the true spirit of the holidays, is a successful introduction and overview of the Attacknine roster which will have me investigating said artists in much more detail in 2007. 9/10 -- Jeff Penczak (27 December, 2006)
