Please introduce yourself...
My name is Matus Lenicky, aka B-Complex, but friends usually call me Mato. I'm from Bratislava, the capital city of Slovakia. I loved music from an early age, the first contact with music making happened when I got my hands on the Fast tracker program in 96 when I was 12, since then music making has been my passion. I didn't know anything about music when I started, but it was so much fun that whenever I had some free time I was on it. So eventually it evolved into more serious production. DJing followed about four years ago when people were asking me to play my tunes in clubs.

How would you describe your sound?

I try to make complex varied music so that you can find something new in every tune. The style varies, but I think in general it can be described as just melodic dance music, that encompasses influences from different corners of the world. I like to experiment but not for the sake of experimentation, just so that I can find something interesting. Drum & bass wise I like to borrow from all subgenres and meld it into something I enjoy most.

Who or what inspires your music?
It sounds like a cliche, but it's life in the first place. In my experience you need to have something to write about or someone to write it for. A lot of my inspiration last year came thanks to a very dear person in my life. When there is some strong experience, it triggers lots of ideas. It's also good to hear some fresh music when it makes you think "how the hell did they do that?" and motivates you to get back to the studio and play with sounds some more.

What are you currently working on?
I'm finishing a VIP version of Beautiful Lies, a couple of remixes and a few new tracks as well. I'd like to get back to some of my older tracks at some point and take them to my current level of production as I believe there are some good ideas that deserve to be executed properly.

What do you have coming out soon?

My remix of Arcane by New Education should be out very soon - if it's not already. Santorin asked to release my track Salad Is OK which should be out early 2010. Also forthcoming on vinyl are the tracks Redemption and Fragmenty, they will be released on a new label Seizeonsound. As I write this, I just got a message that my remix of Julia by The Very Best got approved by the label, so it should see the light soon too!

Tell us more about your forthcoming remix of New Education's Arcane...
It happened thanks to the Hospital guys. Tony asked me if I'd be up to doing some remix work, and sent me the Arcane track. I liked what I heard, and could already hear how it could work in a remix. It was few days before the London Hospitality gig, where I was invited to play on, so we agreed that Tony would give me material for the remix at the party. He told me that the request was to make "shoegazing" drum & bass! So I hope I managed. I'm glad that the band liked what I did and it seems that people do as well!

How does remixing compare to making your own tracks?

It's a bit of a different approach, it has advantages and disadvantages. You don't need to create the main idea for the track when you are making a remix, but you need to find some special way in which you will present it. You also need to respect the original, and don't underestimate the remix work, if you stick some Amen beat on top of the original track, it's not really a remix. Making your own tracks is easier in the freedom you have when you make it. It's all up to you.

Do you ever collaborate in the studio?
Yeah, I have worked with couple of local MCs. I did some recording sessions in my tracks Redemption and Fragmenty - I recorded a viola that my friend Redlolee played. Fragmenty also features vocals from Acrisma. Hopefully I'll manage to get in the studio with Ill-Esha with who I have already done some collab work with before - it's just hard to do it when we live on other sides of the planet (Vancouver vs Bratislava).

What tracks, producers and labels are you feeling at the moment?
I was just listening to the new Blu Mar Ten album , those guys always come with some good vibes, big ups! I love Matrix's remix of From Memory and the recent album by State of Mind. Subwave's Stars Get Down from the new Future Sound of Russia compilation is a wicked example of the minimalistic wave. I love Contact by Noisia & Foreign Beggars. It's hard to name everyone so here are just few names I respect in no order: Apex, High Contrast, Tyler Straub, Carl Matthes, London Elektricity, Spor, Current Value, Danny Byrd, Brookes Brothers, Sub Focus, Naibu, Netsky, Sigma. Big ups to the whole scene and people who make it happen, be it fans, promoters, DJs or labels. Oh yeah, for labels it's definitely Hospital and Lifted for me!

What's the d&b scene like in Slovakia at the moment?

It's small but thriving, there are several towns in which people put on regular drum & bass parties. We're hosting the biggest players from the scene here, just this Saturday Andy C was playing. We have lots of talented DJs and it's good to see some producers finding their place on the scene as well! Smote for example is releasing on Good Looking and L Plus is signed exclusively to Viper. I invite you all to visit Slovakia sometime, aside from great raves we have amazing girls here!

First and foremost, I've got to get the most important question out of the way.. What do you think is more badass? A giant crab or an armadillo and why?

I heard giant crab once beat chuck norris, but chuck is killing everyone who attempts to say that publically.
To be honest I'm only answering this way cause I don't want to admit that I have no idea what Armadillo is.

Your tune Beautiful Lies is taking the drum & bass scene by storm! What can you tell us about its release?

Beautiful lies has quite a story behind it.
There is a girl - Janka that I am very fond of, and who I spent most of last summer with, then we broke up for some time and I was still hoping we'd get back together. After a few weeks we met again at a party when she tried to describe why it happened to me, but the only thing she could tell me is that she doesn't love me. So I went home from the party and boxed all my feelings into that track.
I decided to stop talking to her and move on, posted a small clip of the tune on our slovak dnb message board, where she checked it and sent me a message that she couldn't listen to it and it brought her to tears. When i got it, i was like, oh yea? well, let's make you hear it everywhere you go now, so i sent it to couple of good labels and posted a thread about the tune, decided to do a little revenge.

The tune received quite big feedback, when dFunk played it on bassdrive people were fantastic and later it was featured on the Hospital podcast where it got a bigger audience. Tony Coleman really likes the tune and decided to sign it, so now it's forthcoming on a Hospital compilation called Sick Music. Should be double CD with lots of good material plus 12 tracks on vinyl as well.
What's ironic about it is also that i wasn't feeling very well when I was doing the tune, the bad feeling from the breakup, plus I got stomach flu, so I was actually sick twice while I was making it. Didn't sleep all night so I basically made that tune in 36 hours straight so the Sick Music LP is really the best place for it hehe.

Very nice. I'm looking forward to its release!

Thank you. I'm really excited about it, in many ways it's opening doors for me.

What drum and bass artists inspired you to produce in the first place? What other forms of music do you enjoy?

Well I started making dnb sometime about year 2002 , I used to make happy hardcore and psytrance before, but when I heard Stakka & Skynet's LP Clockwork, I found it really interesting, it had similar sounds that I liked in that time plus really nice pace. It combined the techiness I liked from psytrance with the energy of happy hardcore. I really digged Teebee, Concord Dawn, Black Sun Empire, that sort of sound. Nowadays I'm trying to make music my own way, but of course I am influenced by lots of other music too. While I love Dnb I am not listening to it so much at home anymore, got it on parties, doing it myself, so I listen to all kinds of different music, from jazz to rock, from IDM to abstract hiphop.

Music is just music, nevermind the form you can find something good everywhere if you have your ears opened. I am a big fan of film soundtracks and I'm trying to pick inspiration everywhere.
Actually one of the best inspirational source for me is native music of all nations, before they got affected by globalization, so i'm also a big world music fan. Recently I could hear native songs of Innuits and that's some really out of space stuff.

If you could play a show anywhere in the world, and I mean anywhere, where would you choose?

This will really sound stupid now, but if anyone would ask me, I would say New Zealand and I am really not saying that because I want to promote myself there. I just love nature there and it's not so easily acessible like other places might be. There's a good reason why many films were recorded there.

Choice words to hear! No doubt we all look forward to your arrival whenever that day comes.

Yeah I'll be happy to come, if not for the gig, just to see the place for sure.
I spoke to state of mind yesterday and they said many people who are not ready to be touring arrive there, so I hope it won't be my case when I appear.

The most awful thing to happen to you while djing/travelling - go!

Hehe I knock on the wood, but so far I was lucky, the biggest problems are when the club doesn't have the technical issues solved, like once I played in a club where the cdplayer was turning off by itself, or monitors were doing the same if you stomped your foot more than you should. Drives you crazy!

Worst gig was probably in one place here, when I arrived I had no monitors, the place was so small, and when I was ending my show, some big guy came over saying shut it down in 5 minutes I had enough of this noise! It turned out to be owner of the place and they usually did rock parties there. Been there with my girl though so the trip was nice, but gig was awfull.

What's in store of B-Complex throughout 2009? Any plans for the near future you'd be willing to share with us?

Well of course the Beautiful Lies is coming out, another two tunes, Girl with Flower and Aztech should appear on vinyl and digital on a label called Dysfunktional Music, and I am preparing some other vinyl releases that are not 100% confirmed yet. I hope to continue cooperation with Hospital Records as it seems we are understanding each other very well and it was great work with them so far. I will probably release a free album of some older tunes that i feel like i've been sitting on for too long.

Your top 5 tunes at the moment?

1. Mistabishi - From Memory ( Matrix remix)
2. Sigma - Paint it Black
3. London Electricity - Just one second
4. Apex - By the way
and if i may, Beautiful Lies, for personal reasons hehe.

But theres lot of great music coming out so its unfair to choose just a few.

Thanks for your time B-Complex!
Beautiful lies forthcoming on Hospital's Sick Music LP, set for release on June 15th. A must for any collection!
