I got this 90s party this week, and i ripped off the flyer layout from the now classic Renaissance mixtape series - early/mid 90s DJ game at its finest. Hands down - it was clear that this team of dedicated DJs, who had the abilities to rock parties, the sensibility to break new records, the courage to promote their own artists, and crazy skills on the cut. Plus, they were the kings of multitrack. In a pre-digital, maxell90 tape age... 4 tracks, 3-4 takes TOPS to get it right, no cut&paste editing, no computer, no ableton, just the dolby truth. Apparently they had been doing their thing for a minute, cuz the first tape i got was 12 - when i popped it in, i knew quick that it was about to be some shit: ere-uhruh-ere-uhruh-eh - ery'body over there y - y - y - yknow its time to get champ y-know its ti-ti-time ta get eh ereh eh ereh eh erybody ova there ya know its time ta get champ ya know its time ta get champthump im gonna ithump im gonna thump im gonna give it to ya smooth operator bassline comes in under check the rhime intro and for the next 45 minutes i forgot about the existence of a fast forward button. and that was the old school side (notice the public enemy, tribe called quest, and kane samples, only 2-4 yrs old at that time, but u knew it was classic material) the next side breezed through fakin the funk, fu-shnickens, reminisce over you, poppa large & dwyck - before throwin their own MCs in the mix (CED the Don, Trinidadian was the shit!). This side with less cut display but the smartest timing & transition you could ever hope to achieve, even today. Fast forward button, again, not a factor. In fact, I ended up breakin the rewind button that summer. I had just got my first pair of lineartechs and I was takin notes... Let the new records play out... show off, get clever & remix what we already know... dont talk, let your MCs do that, let your mix do that for you. Yeah okay, on the real, I was mostly just bitin the cuts - same way we would dissect DJ Premeir, Pete Rock, Daddy Rich, Jazzy Jeff's hooks on albums. But the lessons were there on many levels. I never really got into the mixtape game real heavy. Maybe its because the DJ Clue era fucked it up. Maybe its because Im lazy. But really its because I cant hope to cheive that level of greatness. They are the kings of this whole shit. Not to dis Kid Capri, Ron G, Doo Wop, Dirty Harry, Tony Touch, PF Cuttin, Lazy K, S&S, Cutmaster Swift, DJ Juice, Green Lantern or whomever - but I feel like all of you got some of the respect you rightfully deserved. DJ Rei & G-Bo the Pro gotta get theirs too, its time. My whole inspiration for even writing this today is that I believe they are about too. DJ Rei is still holdin down the LES and killing the Reggaeton mixes, but I dont know so much about that scene - but I caught up with G-Bo on myspace (myspace.com/gbothepro) and get this, he got the whole series of mixes, 9 thru 21, plus mad extras (that were ever available, 1-8 are probably locked in a trunk somewhere in jersey) as a usb digital box set! Peep... Pretty fly shit right here. Im saving up cuz I'm broke as shit, But yoooou owe it to yourself to drop the $150 just to get your game on track. In these days of Serato and a 57, i swear i still try to re-create some of the madness Double RR & G-Bo had on lock, but do it live & spontaneous(and tipsy). Maybe Ill get around to my own mix series one day, but itll only be so my own style will get bitten and reworked by the future kings the same way. ... to be honest, I ripped off way more than the flyer from them - the whole game followed these artists, some good artists have borrowed from them - but remember - great artists steal;)Come chck the party tonite at DUO - safe!

I dont think i have to apologize for skipping over the recent passing of Pimp C. Or for not blogging my speculations on how Tupac, Biggie, Big L, Freaky Tah, Big Pun and Lauryn Hill's deaths are all connected. I think it can even slide that I didnt make a James Brown tribute mix last xmas (but its worth noting that i'm credited with the quote "only James could steal xmas day from Jesus"). Rick James, okay, i should be slapped for skipping the memorial AND for not sharing gravesite whereabouts [before the monument] with those skeed out rocker chicks - long story, i digress... The aforementioned superstars will ALL get their due respect(even Freaky Tah), they don't need my help, they deserve to live forever in our memories. And they will... But I have to wonder how many of you starfuckers will turn necrophiliac for the late, Great, Ike Turner? See, what the problems is, is that no one gave him his recognition while he was still living! And thats a shame, because he was the genius behind Ike & Tina, who were the BRIDGE between Ray Charles and James Brown... And Sly Stone, AND Kool&Gang and of course Rufus w/Chaka Khan (a major statement, I realize, but if u want to build on that, just get me one of whatever i'm drinking and we can chop it up). This element of fusion is what wifey Tina would exploit to perfection is her solo career, which (I admit) is enitrely to her credit. But its also what Ike Turner understood from day one. Now I'm actually not a huge fan of Ike&Tina. I prefer the sound that Rufus/Chaka acheived in the 70s, not to mention Kool & the Gang, Earth Wind & Fire, Stevie and Sly. To varying degrees, they all used a Rock sound in their own brands of Soul, but Ike & Tina leaned way more towards that end than any of them (with the possible exception of Sly Stone) - so i used to skip it. But that was before digging up Ike Turner & the Kings of Rhythm's classic(!) - A Black Man's Soul. Only the last few tracks even have Tina on them, and she shines as usual, but after listening to this album, every other Ike&Tina song in my library has gained new perspective. Ike Turner was one of the funkiest musical geniuses of the century. (stereo) So if you not familiar, and your still sleepin on dude, peep the Ike Turner Check-for-Respectlist: Check out Ike Turner's Kings Of Rhythm - A Black Man's Soul Check out how funky and tight his original band, The Kings Of Rhythm were, as early as 1969. Check out how they were together for 20 years already at that point (how many times did the Tempations break up in half that time?). Check out how heavy the pianos were throughout the album. Yeah, he wrote and produced everything, but that was him on like half the keyboards - playing. Not a big deal, but... Check out that he was a guitarist first, a SICK guitarist who's credited with being the first to USE distortion on a Rock& Roll record... and then check out how that very record has been recently acknoledged as the very first Rock record of ALL TIME. (go dig that up too and get back to me, cuz I aint heard that shit yet) You can google all that. Its true. But yeah, thats the untold story. Thats what only a few will really understand. In fact, I'll bet only a few of YOU all will bother really checking for Ike, and some of you will even get upset that I'm showing love for dude; but no one's perfect. Ike had drug and alcohol issues, plus highly publicized, hollywood depicted wife-smacking tendencies. Some people like their coke, some like their wine - I can totally understand liking fine thick southern girls for backup singers, and running up in them steady (for the record, he wifed like 3 of em over the years, him and Tina werent even married, officially - go Google that too). I can also understand wanting to run my band, my ship the way I see it; especially when I been in the game for years. I can understand how its gotta sting when all those years become somehow less important than my lead singer wifey, who really only showed up in the 4th quarter. I can understand how that situation might make all parties mad enough to fight it out on occasion. So I dont judge Ike, I'm not in his shoes but I'll try to do better when I get there. But I also understand that smacking anyone out of anger is weak - any time you do that shit you're not in control of yourself or the situation, that's not what being a man is about. Man or woman, if you gotta hurt someone, it should be out of duty, not anger. I dont know exactly what Ike's obligation to slap Tina was, but dig him breaking it down: Sure, I've slapped Tina... There have been times when I punched her to the ground without thinking. But I never beat her. Haha, classic - Thats not out of context, thats not a mis-quote, its from his AUTO-biography. Say what you want, but thats pure pimp poetry right there. THEME MUSIC: Tuff Crew- Bound To Ike

...i gotta say its been a good day. Big up my lawyer and all apologies for things i might have said prior... he's good. Its still f*cked up we gotta go thru these things... and this goes out to everybody who's been caught up with the NY-or wherever-PD on some wrongful shit no matter how big or small. Cuz my situation was really something minor, shit can get much worse. Its just a good feeling getting past this. It was f*cking with me this past week, and i couldnt even really appreciate some of the better things that were going on around me. So another apology goes out to anyone I was ill towards - and my set at the anniversary was straight up disrepectful, BIG shout to Cutler, Sick, and especially Trackstar for KILLING it at Hardware. NO shout to the powers that be for blacklisting a brother [no pun, sorry]. But yeah, I look forward to getting back up to Buff-city real soon and there may be something new in the works when i get thhere so stay tuned. What else, RideOut v1: Ready or Not has been sent out for post-production, BIG shout to Green Lantern, Shawn Touch and ESP51 Hey, I even got my Ableton working again, so remixes will be in effect real soon Havent seen my family in a couple weeks, but I'll even bet my moms cooked up the breakffast w/no hog! But it all stays the same cuz its all in the game...
Sorry to announce this but... Hectic weekend schedules combined with a lack of desire to play commercial bhangra remixes have brought our run at KATRA to an end for now. Dont come thru looking for me and Elwood. Don't harass the staff about the new look [well maybe a little]. Please don't use my name at the door... but DO stay tuned because there's mad new things in the works and these holidays should just be the start.
Peep the calendar, as I'll be updating it constantly.
If your in the city for Thanksgiving, check me out at KUSH this wednesday. Thanksgiving night, head up to Ubiquita for Stephanie McKay's listening party. After that your on your own, I'll be up in Buffalo for the weekend [peep calendar].
stay up.
