Two things,

Firstly, for those of you in London. I will be giving part of a presentation on the English Folk Dance & Song Society Wax cylinder collection of British traditional singers, next Wednesday, 12th December at 6.15 pm, see below for full details…

Secondly, a big thank you to all those who contributed to my Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal Box, whether at my concert at the Union Chapel, or at Cecil Sharp House (EFDSS), or in the licensed bar at All Saints Margaret Street! It raised £60 for a very worthy cause, thank you.

Anyway, here are the details about the talk -

British Library Sound-cases: EFDSS cylinders

Forgotten Voices: The English Folk Dance and Song Society wax cylinder collection - Recordings of English, Scottish, and Welsh traditional singers from the early 20th century

Wednesday 12th December 2007    18:15–19:45 at the British Library Centre for Conservation, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB.

The British Library is hosting an early evening talk exploring the English Folk Dance and Song Society's collection of cylinder recordings, currently on loan to the British Library.

The session will be chaired by Malcolm Taylor O. B. E. of EFDSS.  Andrew King will speak about the provenance and content of the cylinder recordings and Will Prentice will outline some of the problems encountered in retrieving sound from these old and fragile carriers.

This evening is one of a short series of events marking the opening of the British Library's new Centre for Conservation.

Admission free, but please note that places are limited.  To reserve a place please send an email to:

Firstly a reminder for those in London on Friday October 19th that I will be giving a free lunchtime concert at the Union Chapel at 1pm prompt, please see the Upcoming Shows section for full details.

Secondly, my painting LXVIII Cybele has the privilege of gracing the cover of issue 2 of Hex Magazine, which as well as containing a fine article by ManWoman on the Thunder Sign, and an introduction to the development of the family of Indo-European languages by Aaron Holt, also has an excellent recipe for Ginger Cake!

Last, but not least, I'm delighted to announce that Sussex University have awarded me a Sussex Research Scholarship in the Humanities. This now means that my life's work on the English Folk Dance and Song Society's wax cylinder collection of traditional singers [ca. 1906-1914] can not only be continued full-time, but be taken into the context of a PhD! My thanks to the awarding body of Sussex University for allowing me the opportunity of continuing this important research

Best wishes

Today I heard that the Arts and Humanities Research Council would not be funding my PHD study on the English Folk Dance & Song Societys collection of wax cylinder recordings of British traditional singers, as I have no other way of funding this it looks as though I will have to shelve this work till a later time.

By an ironic coincidence a number of these recordings were made by the composer George Butterworth, who died on this very day ninety years ago in the battle of the Somme, and yet if one looks high and low one finds no concerts of his music tonight. It is sobering to see how this country repays those who serve it.

Dear All

For those honest souls out there that don't mind paying for legitimate downloads I've finally got round to starting to licence my back catalogue.

The Amfortas Wound is now available from iTunes, and Tradebit, the links are:

http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playListId=260951991

&

http://www.tradebit.com/filedetail.php/1985696

Other legit sites that will have my material in the near future are:
Napster; BuyMusic; PayPlay; MusicIsHere; Inprodicon; AudioLunchbox; MuzeAugust; SNOCAP; & rVibe

All others are illegal, and though they may say that they offer "legal" downloads are invariably ripping off the artists involved.

Thanks,
Best
Andrew
