Hello All,

So here is the Ethel news that no one wanted to hear:

Come the end of March, the band will be no more!

We have decided to call it a day as the band has run its course and Ethel’s fire is slowly sputtering out.  It’s been 3 years of fun fueled music as a 3–piece, but we want to take the band in a new direction but we’re too restricted with the current line up.  Ethel has always been about simplicity: a three-piece band, catchy songs and big riffs.  Anything but this simply wouldn’t be Ethel hence the decision to start a new.

So as for the future, the three of us will hopefully return in a new band, with new band new members and fresh new sound. Even we don’t know what to expect!

There are two more dates to catch us at (check out MySpace or Face book for details) however the final gig will be the Sat 28th March at the Gander in Bournemouth with our favorite band Toupe and Your Army. It’s going be an epic night for a send off, and we will go out with an ear splitting bang!

We want to say a big thank you to all the people who helped us and given us support over the last 3 years, in particular: Christopher Kyriacou, Gary Hudspith, Tim Sharpe, Conrad Barr, Toupe, Hoffman Sloth, Jason Poole and (the legend) Tone. We hope you can join us to say good-bye at one of these dates.

Big love to you pretty peeps.

Hello you beautiful people!

Just to let you peeps know:
Ethel are currently in the studio recording our long overdue new EP: "May contain nuts".
We have had alot of fun with this one, pushing our new direction of fat grooves & riffs with big, catchy melodies. Big drums, big guitars and a small cat(?). Head banging good stuff!

At the helm of the recording is local legend Gary (from BETIKA) who has captured our elegant(?) raw live sound with this outing, all recorded at Old Barn Studio's, Dorset.
It's all in the mix, and it's sounding very tasty! Four (and a half) songs of hard rocking fun.

Our launch gig for the new CD will be early November (TBC), available on CD and download (Itunes, Napster, Amazon and the works). KEEP YOUR EARS PEELED FOR MORE SOON!

Cheers m'dears.

The Longest Day/Ethel/King of Hearts –The Gander, Bournemouth- 19th June 2008

As I climb the stairs to the "New" Gander , my nostalgic thoughts are of all the rock nights and gigsover the years in this wonderful atmospheric old building.Tonight is the 1st time I have been here in a very long while. At around 9pm "King of Hearts" took to the stage a four piece band producing a wonderful true rock sound with great harmonized vocals and great guitar effects, a good solid half an hour set with some great original tunes.

"Ethel" is a rather unusual name for band, I was expecting that old lady with her dog from "Eastenders", however two guys somewhat resembling Ant and Dec in black suits with white ties took to the stage. Their sound was something between "Weezer" and "The Presidents of the USA" with a very funky bass guitar. The banter between the two front guys on stage was very funny and worked very wel. "Agoraphobiac" a song apparently about staying was one of their set's standout tracks. Joe, Nick and Dougal are a very entertaing trio, with their stage presence and their great songs going done well with the small but appreciative audience.

The reason I left my home to come here tonight was to hear "The Longest Day", after stumbling upon their "My Space" page by chance, the songs that I heard there really impressed me. One of those songs was the opening track tonight "Utopia" which showed that this 3 piece packed a real punch with some great guitar work with stunningly good vocals. A cover of the Nirvana song "Breed" was thrown in midway through the set, a great version adding some variety, however with their own material being so good I would have preferred more of that. This sound deserves to be heard in a big place, it is atmospheric , inspiring and even making the hairs on the back on my neck stand up. The electronic backing tracks merged perfectly well with the drums and guitars giving a truly memorable listening experience. "Suit of Lies" for me was one of the stand out tracks of the night, with vocalist Dan Henry giving a very emotional performance despite their only being a dozen or so people in the audience. The Longest Day deserve to be heard my many more people, they are something very special .

Ever wanted to know how ETHEL came to be? Read on....

After band 'Urban Primate' broke up back in the day, Dougal formed a new group 'Myriad' and advertised for guitarist. Joe signed up and they regularly played with band 'Scoobie' of which Nick played bass for.

After Myriad broke up, Nick asked Dougal & Joe to form a covers band, ironically named 'Dougal'! When they eventually called it a day, Nick asked Joe to join new band 'CON23'. Dougal made a brief appearance as drummer in this band, before joining 'Boston Crab'. Con & Boston often played together, untill Dougal left and joined 'Get Amped'. CON23 & Get Amped survived for an age, 'till Con eventually called it a day.

Whilst Get Amped toured the world (!) Joe joined Pennycomequick, untill a year later he ventured out on his own and played a few solo gigs. Nick came to one such gig and forced a re-united attempt for a new musical venture. Writing together, all they needed was a drummer that fitted. It just so happens Dougal left Get Amped and was pounced on by the boys. ETHEL was born!!

THE (not even close) END...

So, here it is!

Ethel is on for more!
We have been writing a whole stack of new songs which we will be unvailing at the next lot of gigs! The future looks good! The Gander re-opens under new management (which we love!) and O'neils is bringing on more local band nights, and they love us too!

So lots of gigs to come to show off the new batch of songs (which all rock like your mama!) and a promise of a new recorded material in the new year: WE PROMISE!

"It's a very exciting time..."
