Ken Macy plays 100 shows per year
Posted on 08 Jun 2009

By IAN ABREU
One thing's for sure, no one can ever say that Ken Macy doesn't have a strong work ethic.
Hailing from Worcester, Mass., Macy plays about a 100 shows a year, not because he has to, but because he wants to.
"On average, I play about 100 shows per year. My favorite part about playing live is connecting with people in the audience," he said. "To be able to have someone enjoy what you're doing is a great feeling. I just recently played at a benefit for helping adopted kids find homes and that was a fun gig."
Macy released his first CD entitled Three in July of 2008 and it consists of five original soulful blues-rock tracks.
"It's upbeat and fun," explained Macy of his newest release. "You'll hear a variety of different styles of music and maybe a few tunes you'd never thought you'd hear done in a unique arrangement. I'll be on tour throughout New England during most of the summer in support of my latest EP."
Even though Macy is a multi-instrumentalist, he did wish to acknowledge a pair of local musicians who have helped him throughout the years.
"The guys that played on my last record are a great," he said. "Dave Kurdzionak plays saxophone and does excellent backing vocals. Kevin Haverty plays drums and has been an important part of the overall sound. He has a great ear and he's a fantastic drummer and friend."
Combining a solid blend of rock, blues, and soul, Macy said that his particular style of music was influenced mainly by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.
"My biggest influence is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers," he explained. "They have a great overall sound and I am a huge fan of his songwriting. He makes you look at things in a different light and his lyrics are fantastic. Some other influences include: The Jayhawks, John Fogerty/CCR, Stevie Wonder, The Rolling Stones, and many others."
If you're interested in seeing Ken Macy live, you are urged to check out his website at www.kenmacymusic.com.
"If you're looking for a great, fun, live experience, come check me out," he said.

Ken Macy: Winner, Best Blues/R & B Act, Best Solo Act

First off, give me 5 words to describe yourself as a performer.

Fun, energetic, unpredictable, honest, passionate

First song you heard that you wish you’d written?
There’s a lot, but currently I’d have to say “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” by The Jayhawks. Has a 60s feel to it and the lyrics are great!

What’s your favorite form of exercise to keep in shape for performing?
Eating hamburgers.

Which comes first in your creative process ~ lyrics or music?
It’s split 50/50.

Best movie ever about the music industry/a band?
“This Is Spinal Tap.” It’s so funny and it really touches upon the ridiculousness and small details about being in a band/being a rock star. The amps go to 11!

A lot of people think the word “groupies” has a negative connotation. What word would you use instead?
EnthusiasticFemaleFans.

Dream endorsement would be…?
Any endorsement. Free stuff is awesome!

Writing, performing, recording, drinking, groupies ~ what’s your favorite part about being a musician?
Writing and performing songs that connect with people. It’s a great feeling when people enjoy what you have written, recorded and performed.

Most underrated musician of all time?
Mike Campbell from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Great guitar player!

If you were deserted on an island and only had 3 albums to listen to, what would they be?
Tom Petty ~ Full Moon Fever, The Jayhawks ~ Hollywood Town Hall, Stevie Wonder ~ Definitive Collection

Have you ever karaoked? If so, how drunk were you and what was your song of choice?
Once. I sang “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen at this bar. It was pretty funny. I didn’t realize how hard the song was to sing until about ? of the way through. It was like I ran a marathon.

If you could swap places with any famous musician for 24 hours who would it be and what kind of damage would you cause?
Probably David Lee Roth from Van Halen (back when they started). He looked like he had a great time onstage and I’m sure he had fun offstage. Plus it’d be cool to do splits and ride around on a huge inflatable… microphone.

Have you ever had stage fright/forgotten the words/music/etc while on stage? If so, how’d you handle it?
I think every musician at some point flubbed lyrics onstage. The best part is what the performer does with the flub. That makes it memorable, fun and interesting. I will usually add a joke line about something that’s going on in the room or in pop culture and that usually saves me and the song.

What do you appreciate most about the Central MA music scene?
The diverse groups that are in one small area. If you look around New England, it’s pretty remarkable that we’re surrounded by such amazing talent.

Anyone you’d like to thank for anything?
I’d like to thank my fans for they’re constant love and support. You guys rock!

Next gig is where and when?
Please check www.kenmacymusic.com for all gigs.

Hi Everyone,

Every year Pulse Magazine out of Worcester MA has an award show for local artists.  I've been to alot of places around New England over the past few years and I can easily say that we are very fortunate to have something like this in our backyard.  It's nice to acknowledge those who work hard as musicians: those who give you great performances every weekend and giving it they're all.

I was happy to see a lot of my friends nominated for awards: Boothill Express, Melissa Gates, Ben Wilmott, Jon Short, The Flock and many many others.  With that being said, I knew I was going to have a fun night, win or lose.  I'm fortunate to know so many talented cool people as well.  They are all well deserving of recieving recognition for they're work.  I'm glad I got to see everyone at the awards too.  With the way my schedule has been, its was really nice to catch up with some old great friends to recharge my batteries.

I am happy to say that I brough home 2 out of three trophies: "Best Blues Act" and "Best Solo Act".

Also kudos to Melissa Gates who one for Best Female Vocal.  Much deserved.

I would like to thank you all for your constant love and support.  Without you NONE of this is possible.   I walked away from this year and last year with this in mind: your hard work DOES pay off.  I'm fortunate to be doing what I'm doing and I'm glad I have great people in my corner.

Thank you all so much and see you on the road!

Cheers,
KM

Ken Macy "Three" 5- Song EP
Written by Douglas Sloan of Metronome Magazine

This is a really great sounding 5-song sampler from newcomer, guitarist-singer Ken Macy First and foremost, Macy exhibits a superb guitar tone that features a distinctive growl.  That combined with his convincing vocals makes Macy a blues-rock powerhouse.  On Macy's new release, Three, drummer Kevin Haverty does a fine job of keeping the song grounded while saxophonist Dave Kurdzionak turns in a rousing performance on the upbeat track "Queen-Bee".  Popular in the Fitchburg area and in Connecticut, Macy is a welcomed treat to this critics ears.  Outstanding!

KEN MACY - THREE – SELF RELEASED (Produced by Ken Macy; Engineered and Mixed by Kevin McCluskey at Long Sought for Sound Studios, Westford, MA; Mastered by The Soundlab at Disc Makers, Pennsauken, N.J.)

Ken Macy's last CD, "What If" showed a guy not shooting for anything real cerebral or heady. He just wanted to dig himself into a swamp rock groove with drummer Kevin Haverty and rock out. On this five song EP he continues that tradition. His trio (Macy, Haverty, and saxophone player Dave Kurdzionak) kick off the opener, "Let It Shine" with a Creedence Clearwater Revival like percussion filled stomp and fuzz tone guitar. Ken's developed some self editing as this song says what it has to say and wraps up in just over three minutes.

Macy slows it down with the bluesey, mellow, "Out of My Life." Macy's guitar playing has greatly improved, as witnessed by the solo that ends this song. "Talking in My Sleep" is another song about an unfaithful lover, which has a sweet bluesey guitar solo in the middle. On the last album Macy caught his lover and another man in bed.

This time around we get no specifics, but things end much more peacefully. The band kicks into gear on "Queen Bee," ripping into a jumping jazz jam where Kurdzionak finally gets to let loose on his saxophone.

They wrap things up with the mellow plucking of "Brand New Day," an uplifting tune about renewal and revival. It's a fitting way to end Macy and the band's short and sweet statement- Phil- wormtown.org worcester ma

Ken Macy – Three
By Mary Ouellette

Central MA based singer/songwriter Ken Macy returns with his new EP, proving the old adage that good things do indeed come in threes.

Three, his new five-song EP, is the perfect blend of 70s infused rock and modern day blues and is capped off perfectly by Macy's soulful vocals. With so much talent, it may be surprising to learn that he's only in his twenties. In a time when the music industry is saturated with pretenders and wannabes, Macy's sound stands strong and it's evident that he's not trying to emulate anyone but himself. His identity shines throughout the EP as each song takes on a life of its own. Each one offers up something a little different while maintaining the Macy magic.

Macy chose the path of a solo artist to focus on writing great songs.

"I wanted to keep writing more and bettering my songwriting craft," he said.

The songs on his Three EP are proof positive of his efforts.

"The most important element in writing a song is being able to relate with yourself and your audience," said Macy. "If you write about something that's not true to you or that doesn't really relate to you, it's difficult to relate that idea to your audience and have them buy into it. I feel that your most honest work is your best work."

It's that raw honesty that leads the way through the five songs on the EP. Lyrically, the songs take the listener on a magical ride from basic love song ("Let it Shine" ) to the trials and tribulations of being in a relationship ("Out Of My Life") and the dreaded breakup song ("Talking In My Sleep"). A virtual mirror of Macy's soul, this trio of songs is heartfelt and catchy from start to finish.

Although the EP starts out as a soul-searching mission from love found to love lost, it ends with a bang with the last two tracks. Arguably the best tune of the bunch is "Queen Bee." It's a very upbeat song with a beautiful saxophone arrangement that tells about the virtues of a strong woman who knows what she wants and how to get it. Let's face it, what's not to like about that? The EP ends on one of its highest notes with the song "Brand New Day," a bluesy-based mellow song in which Macy reflects on life as a whole.

"I wrote this one reflecting how I feel about life ~ look ahead, enjoy every day and make the most of what you have," he said. "It's about leaving the past behind you and looking forward to the future."

So what does the future hold for Ken Macy? His personal aim is to "keep on doing what I'm doing ~ writing songs people enjoy, making the music I love and to put on the best live show I can."

It's hard to argue with that. Great songwriters are a dying breed. But with talent like Ken Macy, there's great hope for the future.

With a healthy touring schedule that spans throughout Central, MA, be sure to catch Ken Macy live at one of his upcoming performances and pick up a copy of his new EP!
