RadioIndy is pleased to present The Nucleus with a GrIndie Award for their CD "Love and Gold" "Love and Gold" by the very experienced The Nucleus submerses listeners in classic rock heaven. Upon an initial listen, it becomes very clear that this band is skilled musically, vocally, and lyrically. The lyrics on the CD are strategically, poetically, and memorably written. The band is very tight and clearly has spent considerable hours in the recording and/or rehearsal studio. The title-track kicks of this CD with a delightful bang as listeners get acquainted with this band's vintage 70's rock sound. Three-part harmonies bring the chorus of this song to an invigorating climax. "Alabama" boasts a hook-filled unison chorus and an impressive keyboard bridge. Song after song, The Nucleus delivers musical hooks and contagious rock melodies on this CD that are sure to leave listeners thirsting for more. -Xavier and the RadioIndy Team

It's no secret that Humboldt County fosters its own music scenes. There's the rock music scene, the jam band scene, and the reggae scene, for starters. And sometimes, because of people like Brian Swizlo, those different genres are brought together to work and grow off of each other.
Swizlo has been around the Humboldt County music scene for about 11 years now, and plays keyboards full-time with five of the areas prominent musical groups--The Nucleus, Subliminal Sabotage, Bump Foundation, Moo-Got-2, and Ishi Dube and Massagana.
That he can easily slip into and out of funk, jam, electronica, hip-hop and reggae styles of music tells him that other musicians can do the same thing, and Swizlo wants to see them do it.
Brad Van Pelt, of the Red Fox Tavern, approached Swizlo around six months ago, about creating the Acid Jazz Experiment, in its 15th consecutive week, this coming Monday.
"When I lived in Nederland, Colo.," says Van Pelt, "they had an great acid jazz night that brought together great players from the local to national scene who might not otherwise have the opportunity to play together.
"I thought the acid jazz experiments would be a great asset to the Humboldt County music community," he continues. "It brings out everyone from musicians, to music connoisseurs, to people who just want to get down with the funk!"
"The idea was to gather all of the musicians in town," says Swizlo, "see who wants to play funk music, and instead of doing an open mic thing, I have a structured thing where there's usually two sets of players every night and they get a full 90 minute set, so it's really like having two bands that have never played together before."
A downside of the normal open mic concept is that each musician only gets three songs or fifteen minutes on stage -- enough time to warm up, but not enough time to really get into the groove.
"After the second or third jam (during the Acid Jazz Experiment), you start to get to know the players," says Swizlo, "and after a while, the music starts sounding really good."
The Red Fox Acid Jazz Experiment is not an open mic, so a musician can't just show up and play. It's an open structure, says Swizlo, "organized chaos," open to any musician who wants to come out and play any kind of funk music, and gets a hold of him first.
Swizlo organizes the players, each week, usually on the day of the event, so by the time 8 p.m. Monday rolls around, he usually has a backline, consisting of drums, a bass, and a guitar set up. Sometimes the backline folks make suggestions as to other players that should be involved that night, and sometimes Swizlo calls someone who has approached him in a previous week. In any given night, it can be expected that on stage at some point will be at least bass and drums, probably guitars, probably keyboards, most likely percussion, some horn players, vibraphone, and possibly a vocalist or two, many of whom have never played together before.
Some local musicians that have taken part in the Red Fox Acid Jazz Experiment over the last 14 weeks have included drummers Tofu Mike, Mike Meyers, Pete Ciotti of The Nucleus and Yer Dog, Dale Cash and Jon Murdock on bass, Dan Perez and Wolf Navarro on guitar, keyboardist Matt Engel, and countless others.
"It always starts out with just a jam in a key," says Swizlo. "This particular night is made to forget what you know and get onstage and make people dance, funky style.
"I'm very interested in pushing peoples' musical minds," he continues. "I'm extremely interested in seeing what people can do when they get outside of themselves.
"My view for this whole thing is that I'd like to see the next five or six good bands come out of this," says Swizlo. "I'd like to see some of these players get together and form bands, so that's why it's different from a blues night."
He would also like to oversee the eventual release of a series of albums, called the Red Fox Acid Jazz Experiment, that will help to promote the "Humboldt County music movement," as Swizlo calls it.
"It's got its own style, it's got its own niche, it's got its own music scene. It's a total community that breathes its own life and there's tons of good music," he says.
The Red Fox Acid Jazz Experiment starts at 9 p.m. every Monday night with DJ Rickshaw spinning a variety of danceable tunes, followed by live music a little after 10 p.m.
Musicians hoping to get in touch with Brian Swizlo can contact the Red Fox Tavern.

Subliminal Sabotage is an aptly named force of nature.
Their infectious mixture of beats and rhymes attacks the soul below the threshold of conscious perception.
Their sonic fury sets its controls for the center of your mind, deliberately subverting everything that you thought you knew about the urgency of rhythm fused with the power of the spoken word.
Hip Hop is alive and well in Humboldt County. Sub Sab is here to make sure that it stays that way.
The group's DNA is an ultra-magnetic marriage of live instruments and tight flows.
Sub Sab's music is born from a cornucopia of sound where guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, and horns intermingle with the nimble verbal virtuosity of three of the best MC's on the North Coast.
They are a virtual army of musicians.
Creating the sonic foundation is Nucleus, a live band that's been a part of the North Coast rock 'n' roll scene for the last seven years. Piet Demolition coaxes exotic sounds from his guitar as P.C. keeps the rhythm thunderously alive at his drum kit. Steve Webb makes sure the groove never leaves the stage on bass while B. Swizlo adds a zesty blend of funk on keyboards.
Sub Sab's full and rich sound is rounded out by propulsive percussionist Galen Davis, Chris Noonan who wails on the saxophone and flute, Mike Lee rocking the cello (yes, you read that right...the cello), DJ Just One works his turntables into a frenzy as hype man Berel Alexander ignites each chorus with his own brand of rampant energy.
These elements alone make for an eclectic and towering tour de force. But Sub Sab isn't complete without its MCs.
On the microphones is a triumvirate of lyrical fury from Elision, MikaSun and MCP (Emcee Problematic.) Each energetic wordsmith wields their own unique voice which culminates in a barrage of intelligent and mind-blowing lyrics. Elision (a veteran of the legendary Humboldt County Freestyle Kings crew) typically gets the party started. Part carnival-barker, part rapid-fire conscious rapper, Elision is a student of all styles of flow.
MikaSun--once a mere background supporter, now turned enigmatic front man--adds his deep baritone and deep observations about life and politics to the mix. MCP--gravelly, grimy, and always compelling--brings a frenetic style that mixes quick-witted couplets and vivid storytelling.
Subliminal Sabotage is a complete sonic package.
"When you walk into one of our shows and see ten to fifteen people onstage--it can be pretty overwhelming," says B. Swizlo, who is not only the man behind the keys but he also oversees the mixing boards in the studio. "At first, you might think you're seeing a bunch of dudes up there just going crazy--but really, what we are is a live Hip Hop orchestra. If you come to our show, you'll be bouncing."
When confronted with the inevitable stereotype of being a Humboldt Hip Hop outfit, Swizlo is very cool-headed about it.
"We've taken the jam sound and melded it with Hip Hop." B Swizlo said. "Our sound encompasses the whole spectrum: Rock, jazz, blues, funk, R&B, Hip Hop. We aren't trying to get on MTV. Most people would simply think we're a bunch of white boys who are just talking about weed, but we're more than that. We live the Humboldt lifestyle; we are a part of the community. Our songs focus on a lot of emotional and social issues--relationships, politics, the erosion of the environment. We've been lucky to be here and see hip hop grow -- that's been a big thing for us."
When Sub Sab takes the stage at Humbrews, you won't be standing around for too long. Their set is filled with a lucid energy that will inspire plenty of head-nodding and fits of funky dancing. Expect a few surprise guests to join in on the fun, including local legend Garth Cultivader, a friend and collaborator.
You will definitely be bouncing until last call.

B. Swizlo & V/A
Future Hits of that Humboldt $!?
Written By: Ky Junkins
Editor's Review:With Northern California's Potluck on the road half the year, Humboldt County producer B. Swizlo has taken over the duty of assembling the area's talent and spreading CDs like seeds across the land. Swizlo demonstrates astounding versatility on ... Humboldt $!?. Utilizing the electric organ and piano and a handful of talented instrumentalists, Swizlo creates many kinds of tracks, including West Coast synthesized bass-heavy slumpers, mellow twinklers, rock 'n' rollers, old-school vocal recreations and even departures from rap with The Nucleus bringing a heavy folk-rock vibe. Surprisingly, the all-star group tracks were some of the weaker ones; perhaps the MCs saved their best material for solo songs. Personal favorite: Mr. Garth-Culti-Vader waxing poetic about the "sticky-icky situations" he's been through with the love of his life, "I Love You Mary Jane," over a memorably buoyant organ-filled track. Other shiners: Elision sketching out male-female relations in gritty ("Apology Rejected") and smooth ("I Want Your Body") fashions and Myster DL's untouchable, laid-back style over simple piano pimpin' on "Bong Water" shows him to be the next big player on the North Coast. There's only one disc worth of material, but the album comes with two CDs: uncut and clear-cut versions. The high quality picture on each CD combines to send clear messages: one of a healthful, verdant forest, the other a chopped-down wasteland with tree carcasses stacked high. B. Swizlo seems to be embracing his role as Humboldt's new ambassador. Write Your Own Review

The Core
An afternoon spent with engineer/guitarist Piet "Demolition" Dalmolen and keyboardist/producer B. Swizlo, listening to an unreleased mix tape by Swizlo and the Subliminal Sabotage crew, Future Hits of that Humboldt Shit, offers a musician's take on the maturing sound of Humboldt hip hop. The musicians lounge in their gritty Arcata studio surrounded by stacks of amplifiers and half-empty bottles of water.
Swizlo and Dalmolen, together with drummer Pete Ciotti and bass player Steve Webb, make up Nucleus, a popular rock and funk band that doubles as the musical crew behind Subliminal Sabotage, the North Coast's fantastic hip hop/live instrumentation combo. It works like this: Add a handful of young SoHum-bred MCs and a few guest musicians to Nucleus and you have Subliminal Sabotage.
"Demolition" is the engineer behind six Nucleus albums and a handful of Subliminal Sabotage-related hip hop albums (not to mention a few other projects). Swizlo is something more than a producer: He is also the crew's motivator, organizer, hustler and life-coach extraordinaire.
When Swizlo joined the Nucleus crew two years ago, the band had a strong history as a trio with six years of road seasoning and hundreds of gigs. Swizlo brought his connections with the Humboldt Freestyle Kings, a roving crew that included Garth Vader and young Southern Humboldt MCs Elision, MCP and Mika Sun.
Sub/Sab has been lighting up stages for more than a year, most notably playing last year at Reggae on the River and at this summer's Reggae Rising. There the expanded family grew, with guest MCs, back-up vocalists, a flute player, cellist, percussionist and DJ, a model they freely admit is borrowed from Parliament-Funkadelic.
Subliminal Sabotage evolved out of the diverse styles of the musicians spurred by the political economy of hip hop. They've moved beyond the need to clear samples, by laying down original music, playing their own instruments and creating a breakbeat-laden sound fertile for MCs and completely free of any legal woes.
Settling in to make music in this community has also meant deeper roots for the musicians. Swizlo owns a clothing company, and Dalmolen pays the bill as a studio engineer. Ciotti and Webb run a local pizzeria; both of them are expecting their first children. "The drummer and the bassist are having babies and Piet and I are finishing albums, having babies of our own," jokes Swizlo.
They stress that this is an experienced crew with a lot of music to share. Their output to date is a serious stack of CDS: six albums that showcase Garth Culti-Vader, 10 by Swizlo, solo albums by Elision and MikaSun and numerous compilations.
Next on the path the release of Swizlo's Future Hits of that Humboldt Shit. Nucleus is about to drop Love and Gold, a stunning example of rock 'n' roll infused with soul beats that makes the band a great backdrop for hip hop. MCP's long-anticipated solo album, I'm in love with death, is almost complete, as is the new Garth Culti-Vader album, Unpredictable Individual.

| NEW MIKASUN INTERVIEW IN TIMES STANDARD |
|
Mika Sun, from backup to star.
Maxwell Schnurer/For the Times-Standard Article Launched: 05/04/2007 08:52:15 AM PDT
Subliminal Sabotage emcee Mika Sun refers to himself as a "background man." It is a good indication of the humble approach this rapper takes to everything he does. With the release of his album "Strategic Vision," Mika Sun is going to have to get used to shining from the front of the stage.
"Strategic Vision" is an excellent representation of underground hip hop. Complete with funky rhythms, sharp production and scorching lyrics, the album stands out. With songs like "Angel's View" and "Breath" offering diverse rhyme skill and acute musical connections.
Sun sat down for an interview a few hours before a raucous show April 20 at Humboldt Brews. Notoriously taciturn, it seems strange that Sun would choose to become an emcee.
"It was a way to express myself I guess. I have internalized stress that I just needed to get out. A lot of people ask me those kinds of questions; they say 'you're not the front man-type.'"
On the stage however, a front man he has become. Gripping the microphone and reciting powerful lyrics, he has been rocking parties with Subliminal Sabotage for years. Known as Sub Sab, the hip hop crew performs with a full band that often includes a cello, flute, keyboard, bass, guitar, drums, percussion and a trio of emcees. Not to mention backup singers, and unofficial emcees like Mr. Garth Cultivader, it is not uncommon to see more than a dozen musicians on the stage with Sun. He quickly cites the influence of the artists in his extended musical collective for his success. "Mostly my inspiration has been from local people I've been working with; people who helped me create this new CD, that's been a big inspiration. I'd consider the top-notch musicians willing to work with me a big confidence booster and a chance to grow in my expression."
Keyboard player and producer B. Swizlo and DJ Just-one are quick to get praise from Sun, as is the rhythm section consisting of drummer Pete Ciotti, Piet "demolition" Dalmolen, and bass player Steve Webb. Webb, Dalmolen, Ciotti and Swizlo make up the hard-hitting Arcata funk band Nucleus, and their contributions are represented in Sun's sound. It is quickly obvious that Sun has honest affection for the guys he makes music with, he often prefers to praise the musicians he works with rather than take the opportunity to talk about his own skill.
Sun didn't really start to think of himself as an emcee until the ninth or 10th grade.
"I was always into poetry, but most as a form of expression." When Sun heard hip hop, he realized that there was new potential for his poetry.
"Through listening to better emcees, I was taken aback. I realized there was a lot to be done with this. You can really express yourself in a natural way."
He said that Tupac was extremely important as one of his influences but continued: "Before I listened to Tupac I was kind of on the conscious side of things, Michael Franti, conscious hip hop, Arrested Development, Public Enemy, political stuff. But when that gangsta-self-expression, say-whatever-you-want came out, I was taken."
Tupac offered a model of artistic expression that University of Pennsylvania professor Michael Eric Dyson describes in his book "Holler if you Hear Me" as "redemptive vulgarity." Tupac opened doors for Sun.
Despite his acknowledgment of his influences, Sun's flow is his own. With a rare capacity for enunciation, he can spit tongue-twisting rhymes, but shines when the beat slows down. "Poems of mind" from "Strategic Vision" is an example of the slow driven mellow songs combined with shockingly heartfelt poetry.
The contrasting musical styles are the hallmark of this emcee who performs equally well with a cello as with gangsta rappers, but Sun likes the jazz feel.
"I guess I'm just attracted to those kinds of tracks," he said. "mellower feeling tracks. Who I am, I prefer the cool stuff, especially with the flute, more jazzy sound."
One inspiration is his locale. A local artist, Sun grew up in Southern Humboldt on the west side of Redway in a decidedly rural existence.
"There was a lot of art stuff, it was very accepting of all different forms of music in that area. As soon as I was of a certain age, there were tons of great shows coming through . . . and I naturally got that influence."
The isolation of rural life made hip hop all the more appealing.
"When I was young I didn't get exposed to much of that [pop culture], I was in the hills really a lot -- no TV. And when I finally got exposed to it, it was cool, it was something I liked. Just from the very beginning, the first stuff I heard," Sun said.
Sun created Subliminal Sabotage with emcees MCP and Elision and "a pair of drummer-producer-cats." Crew member Elision broke out first with his album "Chapter One." Through him came a connection to local music impresario B. Swizlo. When Elision and Sun went to L.A. to record Eli's, album, Sun's hard work showed and he got to contribute a few tracks.
"I got on Eli's album that was my debut too, and when Eli was pushing on his album, I was like: 'I'm on your album, I'm going to back you up, be your background man.' I wanted to be a background man with his own style, not just a hype man, but a hype man with his own style. Now with my album I show I can hold it down too."
"I started taking it seriously when other people started taking me seriously," he says. "I gotta step up because this is what I want to do and what makes me feel good. Even if it isn't making me money, it is important to have those things in your life."
When B. Swizlo put together last year's critically acclaimed "NYCA: Volume 1" mixtape Sun again was asked to contribute to a few tracks including the epic "North Koast Rider."
As Subliminal Sabotage grew and toured, Sun's song contributions started to increase. His quiet persona fell away in live shows and he loomed over the crowd on the edge of the stage pushing out the words.
While the band was opening at Reggae on the River and showcasing their live skills, Sun was writing rhymes and building a collection of tracks that he felt exposed his politics and skills.
He said that one of the major problems with putting together his album was choosing the songs. "We had close to 10 songs that got scrapped. They're good songs; they might make it on another album."
"['Beauty'] is the first track on the album," Sun said. "The first time you get to hear me spit. Some old written [rhymes] I had on the back of a notebook for the chorus, got a beat from Just-One. Put down a little chorus that was some old rhymes, switched it up and wrote a bunch of verses, came out real nice."
When asked who would be next to release an album from the Subliminal Sabotage collective Sun pointed to MCP and B. Swizlo.
"We got MCP obviously. MCP is crazy; I can't explain how much that kid has helped me in my rhyming. He knows a lot about rhyming, he is always telling me little tricks. His is almost done. Swizlo is doing his collabo, me and Garth are together on a couple of songs on that one."
The work of the underground artists in Subliminal Sabotage are self-produced and self-distributed, free of major-labels. Sun explained that it is "definitely a family based operation. We are just down and have the means to make things happen on our own without being involved in trying to get the industry to back you up. Having the ability to hustle it on our own, that is important for our creativity."
Noting the strength of a musician who can rely on a huge musical family to craft music with, Sun allowed himself a rare smile. "To be able to do it yourself and have live musicians to be able to step in without even asking for much money. They are world-class, and they all play their position and do it with passion. Not really trying to get famous, just play their position."
Rising from the interview, the humble emcee closed with his future goals.
"I'm gonna do as many shows as possible, push the new album, try to get it on the radio. And then start working on new stuff for the next album."
Strategic vision indeed.
Mika Sun's new album "Strategic Vision" is out now in local record stores.

SUBLIMINAL SABOTAGE - The Rural Hip Hop Warriors
Hip Hop is almost thirty years old. It is no longer a niche sound created in New York or Los Angeles. In the decades of hip hop two certainties are true.
1. Hip Hop will be marketed and sold in every incarnation. DJs will rep cigarettes, graffiti artists will design corporate logos and emcees will sell fried chicken.
2. New Hip Hop will emerge to criticize the older generation for their failures and create new astounding art.
Given these two observations, the tricky thing is discerning the garbage from the exceptional as underground Hip Hop blossoms across the nation, most often as a reply to the corporate world of Rap Music. HUMBOLDT COUNTY is the site of the most recent upsurge of dangerous Hip Hop music, this time coming through SUBLIMINAL SABOTAGE. Start with the band : P.C., whose thunderous drumming can manipulate a crowd better than a good preacher. PIET DEMOLITION, the renaissance-man, is a rock guitarist whose talent lies in his understanding of the good riff. Bass player STEVE WEBB's ability to hold down a groove is infectious. B. SWIZLO, whose explosive keyboards cut through the crowd at every show, helps to orchestrate the multi-layered sound. As a musical outfit, SUBLIMINAL SABOTAGE fill out their sound with GALEN DAVIS, a top-notch percussionist, CHRIS NOONAN on saxophone and flute, MIKE LEE controlling the cello, DJ JUST ONE on the 1's & 2's and hype man BEREL ALEXANDER crooning choruses. The three emcees of SUBLIMINAL SABOTAGE are propelled forward by the incredible sound of the SUB SAB crew. ELISION will usually be the first to explode - jumping to the front of the stage with crystal-clear rhymes filled with conscious, thought provoking ideas. Behind him will be MIKASUN, a tall thoughtful emcee in the legacy of Rakim - a tower of dangerous word flow, an emcee's emcee. Finally, the secret weapon is MCP (EMCEE PROBLEMATIC), a tongue twisting lyricist whose songs get the party moving and are guaranteed to move even the most jaded Hip Hop head. Together they pass the microphones over the perfect custom-produced beats and something magical happens; poetry and flow play with the Hip Hop format, letting loose something bigger and more free. When you put their voices with the sound of the best party in HUMBOLDT COUNTY the result is infectious whether live or recorded. The certificate of Hip Hop credibility might be late coming for these artists, but they are certainly authentic to the community they come from. They have legions of screaming fans who have memorized the words from ELISION's album 'CHAPTER ONE - INTRODUCTION' and MIKASUN's album 'STRATEGIC VISION', and wherever they perform, (opening for such acts as Andre Nickatina, Potluck, B. Legit, Haiku De'tat & Sean Paul amongst others), a small army of 707 soldiers roll with them to create the appropriate vibe. Founded with the principles of Hip Hop, and incorporating the live sounds of Funk, R&B, Rock & Roll and Jazz, SUBLIMINAL SABOTAGE has been riding a wave of unrest in the world of Hip Hop since the late 90's. Driven by their community, SUB SAB is growing, with roots deeply planted and branches reaching for the sun. They invite you to experience their rural music revolution. Contact information : B.
