Well hello there!
After the loooongest winter, it seems to be warming up slowly. I hear it's going to be 21degrees C today (69F), so I've got my washing on the line and my fingers crossed. It rains at some point during the day almost every day here, so I'm eagle eyed to the clouds coming up... What's the weather like where you are?
Every month brings so many new developments for the band, and when it comes to waffle on to you all here once a month I'm always surprised at how much we've been up to.

August

August took us around the state - we travelled up to Burnie to play at the Stage Door The Cafe, with fellow Hobartians The Bursting Sun. But not before I went and did the support spot for Skipping Girl Vinegar at the Republic Bar on August 14th.
It took a very valiant effort from the menfolk of AK & KH to fit all of our gear, one person under 6 feet tall (just) and two men over 6'5 tall into the car. It wound up looking a bit like this....
and then a bit like this....
But then we arrived, and had a great time. The next morning, I demonstrated my amazing packing skills....
and then a hearty breakfast and we met the loveliest penguin...
And back home again...
We also played at Irish Murphy's on August 23rd, as Amy Kendall and a Kitchenhand... Kitchenhand Tore was under the weather and COULD have brought some delightful coughing percussion to the party, but it was best that stay inside. (aka Not Make Us All Sick). He's better now, (finally), and the show rolls on.
We played at the Republic Bar last Wednesday night - Ally Mok did the support spot for us, and her band was amazing. I highly recommend you go and check them out - www.myspace.com/allisonmok.

Faux-Down - (n) [Foh-Dowhn] - to play folk & roots music (country) at the same...
also known as a FoDown

I've been playing my banjo a whole lot more lately, and I've started bringing it out to shows now - check over to our YouTube channel and subscribe. Playing the banjo live is a whole world of fun, I liken it to what it must be like carrying a small toddler around all the time... that thing is HEAVY, man. If you click on this linky dink here that'll take you to 'Roads', which is an unreleased song we recorded for YouTube last week. With the banjo.
www.reverbnation.com/amykendall Here we are, ready to record for YouTube...
And go and check out my favourites on the YouTubenHausen - I've found some amazing live performances. That's how I've used my peak bandwidth this month. 10 days until reset...nooooo! Beth Hart pulls out an amazing version of 'LA Song', and Lupe Fiasco and Matthew Santos do an acoustic version of 'Superstar'. Pretty cool stuff. And of course, my faves, Garfunkel & Oates.
And a happy birthday to our bass player Tore! (pictured here with Birthday Twin Katie)

Pugsley Buzzard Show

I'm heading up to Burnie tomorrow to play a show with Pugsley Buzzard at Stage Door The Cafe. If you're in the area (Larry, I'm talking to you.) come on over to the Stage Door and say hi.

Meston Band Show

Next Friday (18th Sept) AK & KH will play a support for Meston Band (VIC) at the Alley Cat Bar in North Hobart. These guys are great - we'd love to see you. Dominic Francis will also be playing, so you're getting a great deal if you come on down....

What I've Been Listening To This Month

Skipping Girl Vinegar - Sift The Noise - these guys were the loveliest musicians I've ever met (apart from my band), and rocked my world completely live. Completely independant, these guys turned down label deals to stay true to what they believed in. Cool eh?
Runaway Dorothy - these guys came highly commended via a friend - and another indie band to boot. Lovely, lush, alt-country sounds.
Daimen - Hold - an oldie but still so amazing. Daimen lived in Hobart until 2007, and went to the mainland. The first live musician I ever saw in Hobart, and still one of the very very best.

Gratuitous Self Promotion Corner

If you love what we do, and love local music, please please tell your friends. It's been really cool to see some of you turn up at shows unexpectedly, with your friends. If you've got a blog/facebook/myspace, go to the bottom of this email and grab a widget or a banner for your site, and help me spread the word. If you sign up to the street team (link at the bottom) and throw a widget up, I'll send you some live, unreleased tracks, with many thanks to Edge Radio.
See us at Facebook also... Become a fan, and tell your friends.
Okay. Enough from me for now! Come to a show - I'll see you soon!
You stay classy San Diego!

Well hello there!
I really can't believe it's August already - there's been some sun (!) and some warm days (!!), there's lambs in the paddocks here and I'm trying to believe that Spring has almost sprung!
July was an action packed month, full of shows, shenanigans and the Amplified Conference. Okay, so maybe the shenanigans were directly related to the Amplified Conference...

Republic Bar

The boys and I (aka The Tallest Band In The World, or the Kitchenhands) played at the Republic Bar and Cafe on Thursday 16th July, with Joe Nuttall & Enola Fall, and Nathan Wheldon and the Two Timers. We had so much fun, and the audience were enjoying themselves. That gig was the first time we'd played as a band at the Republic Bar (I've done lots of solo work there) and we're hooked. There's some video to come from this, I'm yet to edit it all together.

Amplified 2009

(image (c) The Mercury newspaper)
On Friday 17th July I played in Elizabeth Street mall in Hobart for the Edge Radio Amplified Live to AIr broadcast - so much fun, and in the company of so many fabulous musicians - Nathan Wheldon, Linc Le Fevre & Abbey Doggett. I've never done a live broadcast before - always just played safely tucked away in radio studios where no one can see my puffy eyes...
The Amplified Conference ran over three days, and as part of my participation in the conference I (and a few others) had the opportunity hang out wth the delegates and have fancy dinner at Moorilla and spend time picking their brains - and having them pick ours.
After a few days of this, we were all remarkably sleep deprived and still ready to folk-rock, and so the show went on. Repeatedly, and until the wee hours of every morning. I have never seen so much live music in such a short space of time before, and I was consistently blown away (Enola Fall! Charles Du Cane! Steadfast Shepherd!) by the high high quality and talent quotient of the city I live in.

Awesome Tasmanian Music

My picks for you to go and check out - Joe Nuttall & Enola Fall, Steadfast Shepherd, Charles Du Cane, Linc Le Fevre. The Steadfast Shepherd are a husband and wife duo who I'd never seen before and I was totally blown away. I bought their EP on the night and it's in high rotation in my CD player. Support your local musicians - they're the ones rocking the pubs every night of the week.

YouTubenHausen

After band rehearsal every week the boys and I crowd around my computer and record a song that's not released, been reworked, or one of our favourite covers. Go and subscribe to us at YouTube. We're fun! Here's what we do when we think we've pressed 'record' but it's actually just a photo...

Upcoming Shows

Coming up in the next couple of weeks are some exciting shows! This Friday night Amy Kendall & the Kitchenhands will be playing down at Brookfield Vineyard as feature artists for the Folk evening. We'll be playing about 8.30pm for a half hour or so. Brookfield do great food and entry is free!
Next Friday night (14th August) I'll be doing a support slot for Skipping Girl Vinegar at the Republic Bar here in Hobart. I'm super excited - I love their album 'Sift the Noise' - go and check it out. Hayley Couper will be playing as well, I'm schoolgirlishly excited for the entire evening!
THEN we get up the next day and get in Handsome James (my Subaru Outback) for a leisurely drive up to the North West Coast to play at the Stage Door and Cafe (Saturday 15th August) with fellow Hobartians The Bursting Sun. I haven't played in Burnie since 2006, and I'd love to see the beach at Penguin again (Groovy Penguin Cafe breakfast! YEAH!). Pop along if you're up that way - we'd love to see you there.
I'll also be heading back up to the Stage Door & Cafe in September to play a support spot for Pugsley Buzzard, who also played at the Australian Blues Music Festival this year.

Silvereye

As you may well know mine is a musical household, and I'm so proud to share with you that my partner Andrew (who is also a Kitchenhand) has released his solo project EP 'a man without wings' under his pseudonym silvereye. This has been selected as an Edge Radio Recommended release - which means that for the next week, it's on high rotation on Edge Radio and you can tune in to FM 99.3 and possibly win yourself a copy...
It's also pretty special because for every CD sold, half of the proceeds are going directly to the University of Tasmania's Save the Tasmanian Devil appeal. So pop along and purchase yourself a copy and help the devil research, all whilst listening to amazing tunes!

The part where I ask you to help

I'd love you to help spread the word about my music - and there's bribes, sorry, incentives for you also. Scroll down to the bottom of this email and grab a widget for your Facebook page or your blog. Let me know where it is (all widgets are tracked from here) and I'll send you a link to download an unreleased track. Fun eh?
Also head over to Facebook and become a fan - that's warm fuzzies for everyone.
If you own the EP and liked it - go to my Triple J Unearthed and write a review for the tracks, and ditto for iTunes.
You can also follow my riveting ramblings on Twitter.
Thanks for reading - this was a big one eh?
See you at a show soon -

Well hello there!
As always, I begin with saying 'It's been so long!', occassionally interdispersed with 'Wow, what a big month!'. Truthfully, it's been a bit of both, but getting around to putting together an email is always the hardest part. So here we are!
It's July now, which means that it's time for the Amplified festival. Run by Arts Tasmania, this is a great celebration of Tasmanian music. There's a conference, oodles of shows and so many fun things on, I can't decide which ones to go to, and when to sleep.
Let's start with the Amplified CD 'Amplified - Sounds from Tasmania 2009'. I was so lucky to have one of my songs 'Second Storey' chosen to be on the compilation, as did my partner, Andrew. We're a complete little musical household! It's chock a block full of so many awesome artists - Gretel Templeton, All Fires the Fire, my faves Enola Fall, Let the Cat Out, Linc Le Fevre etc etc ec! Go and pick yourself up a copy from Arts Tasmania in Elizabeth Street. They're free and look (and sound) amazing!
While you're there pick up an Amplified program and circle a few dates.... beginning with 16th July, 2009. Amy Kendall and the Kitchenhands will be performing at the Republic Bar, with Nathan Wheldon and the Two Timers and Joe Nuttall and Enola Fall. FUN FUN FUN! The band and I are slightly giddy like schoolgels, but we'll contain ourselves. Barely. Then, on Friday 17th July 2009, head on down to Elizabeth Mall in your lunch break (12pm-2pm) and see the 'Amplified Live To Air' broadcast by Edge Radio. See myself, Linc Le Fevre, Nathan Whelson, Abbey Doggett and Dewayne Everettsmith. What an awesome lineup!
Log on to www.arts.tas.gov.au/amplified to vote for the Amplified Awards, which will be held on Sunday 19th July out at Moorilla. My suggestions for voting: Enola Fall, All Fires the Fire and Linc Le Fevre.
There will be some new fun posters around town promoting these shows - as well as my solo show at Irish Murphy's at 9.20pm on July 15th 2009. I'd love to see you there!
The Kitchenhands and I rehearse regularly and we've started a wee little YouTube channel over here, where we record a song every week for you after rehearsal. We've got three from that series up there, and a few live ones as well. Subscribe away and prepare to be dazzled as we pull all sorts of tricks out of our hats every week. We also noodle around and try and take a decent photo of ourselves. We're doing REALLY well so far, as you can see...
Don't forget to head over to Facebook and become a fan, and you can always follow me on Twitter as well! And if you like what you're hearing, head over to Reverbnation and grab a widget to put on your website to direct people here. Spread the word!
Have a lovely week, and stay warm - it's so icy out there! I'd love to see you at a show soon, and do check out Amplified, it's going to be awesome!

Hello!

There was a Ukulele, a Banjo and a Guitar. The Guitar said 'But I'm a fancy lovely guitar, play me allll the time.' The Banjo said 'I'm fun, and fresh and new. Play me all the time.' And the Ukulele said 'I'm turquoise and covered in sparkles. I don't like staying in Ukulele tuning one little bit. In fact, I'll even go out of tune when you play a single note in Ukulele tuning. But you know what, I'd really like to be a banjo. Banjos are fun!'

Aside from being a chatty little fellow, the Ukulele sat dormant and was glared at for his penchant for staying out of tune. Until one day, his Ukelady tuned him as a banjo. After an initial eyes-closed-hold-ukulele-away-from-self-in-case-of-snapping, the Ukulele was oh so happy to be a UkeBanjo. And then, the Ukulele and his Ukelady became great friends.

As with the banjo, the Ukulady learned pub rock songs and Sufjan Stevens songs on the UkeBanjo, and the odd Kermit the Frog song. Then they began writing original songs again.
And they live happily ever after looking out the window at the green paddocks and the river and trying not to hear the logging truck traffic.

It's been a strange, wintery, introverted month down here. The cold has been so lovely, with wood fires and raisin toast and moo cows in the paddock next door. The fog envelopes my house in a big warm hug for most of the day and occassionally I see snow on the mountains WAY down south.

And then there was Amplified announcements, and flurries of emails. The kind folk @ Amplified chose 'Second Storey' to be featured on their 'Sounds of Tasmania 2009' CD industry sampler. And, if that wasn't fun enough, they chose a song by my lovely partner/producer/engineer's alter ago Silvereye. And if that wasn't too much fun at all, the line up is hot! (I want to say 's**thot' and be a bit rock and roll, but I try to keep this SFW. And, my mother reads this. No Mum, I do not swear. Ever.)

My friend Joe Nuttall is nominated for some awards, as is my book-friend Adam's band, All Fires the Fire. Go and check it all out at Amplified HQ.

The band and I will be playing a show with Enola Fall and Nathan Wheldon & the Two Timers at the Republic Bar on July 16th, 2009 as part of Amplified. We'd love to see you!

And also coming up soon, Abbey Doggett and I are playing a show @ Republic Bar on Tuesday, 23rd June. It's a Tuesday... come on out and enjoy some fun!

Also, I can't get various songs of Washington's out of my head - to the point where Andy will holler at me from the other room 'PLEASE find a new song!'... Go and check her out - hers are some of the loveliest songs I've heard in a really long time.

See you soon,
Amy

Hello again Internets!

It's always quite a while between posts, but really, this will be rectified.

I've been busy putting  together the information for our Brookfield Vineyard gig on May 22. Brookfield is a stunning little vineyard down in Margate (5 mins from Kingston) and have a great venue set up for live music. I'm doing a show there with the Kitchenhands, with Abbey Doggett and Dominic Francis. It's going to be a lovely evening. Come along and support your local musicians - $8/door, fun, games and all manner of shenanigans. There'll be a lucky door prize too...

There's updates over at Amy Kendall HQ and Facebook. I'm also now tweeting on a regular basis. Go and follow me - bite sized bits of information, 140 characters or less. For instance, last night's tweet was about the amazing steak I had at the Ball and Chain Grill in Salamanca. (Scotch with Forestierre Sauce, mmmm!)

I've also been writing some more songs, and playing them with the band at Irish Murphy's. It's such a joy playing with a band after being solo for so many years. It's a completely different vibe and so enjoyable. Don't know what I'm talking about? You'll have to pop along to a show shortly... say... May 22...

I hope you're well - I'm looking out the window at the autumn leaves and the hills bathed in fog. And sunshine. What a day.

So hopefully we'll see you down at Brookfield Vineyard on May 22!

Hi again Internets,

A move to the country, where internet is thin on the ground and everyone has a pair gain phone line. A few phone calls, a few 'I'm not paying your bill until you fix my phone' calls, getting on first name terms with the Telstra linesman (Hi Richard!) and alas, all is well. Thank you internet service provider, you have restored my faith. But alas, my days of NakedDSL in the city are over for now.

I had a weekend of 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's vinyl revival over Easter, the cd stereo was in a box somewhere, so we did a tip shop run and picked up an amp and speakers for $30. And then, there was vinyl. My pick of the weekend was Joan Armatrading, Andy's was 1927's '...ish'. Then he left the house and I could indulge my Bette Midler vinyl obsession. :)

A few gigs coming up with my band The Kitchen Hands. Together we are Amy Kendall and the Kitchen Hands. And we are having a blast playing around the place at the moment. Come and check us out - we've got banjos, mandolins, drums, tambourines and a hearty dose of good fun!

Brookfield Vineyard on May 22 is going to be great - there's Dominic Francis, and Abbey Doggett playing as well. Tickets at the door - more info soon.

In the meantime, head over to ABC Statewide Evenings blog - they did a lovely piece with me last week and they recorded 'Grains of Sand' that you can listen to (and download). The quality isn't awesome, but it gives you a new track to listen to. Exciting eh? Annie Warburton rocks my world - she was so lovely, and when I turned up, she was wearing an Amy Kendall button. Nice. :)

I'd best go and tend to the fire in my lounge room that really doesn't want to stay alight.

Head over to Reverbnation and grab a banner widget to put on your blog, webpage. There's lots of fun things to grab over there - help me get the word out about the music. There's goodies in it for you. Send me an email with your link, and I'll send you the link for downloading some special fan-only exclusives. Fun yes?

See you at a show soon!

Hello there!

This is the quickest of quick updates,
using someone else's internet as mine has gone into the never never for
a little while. I've been off the radar (or maybe just slightly to the
side) for a few weeks now - there's been big changes at Amy HQ, but I'm
back - and not quite online!

Tune your radios in to ABC 936 (AM,
frequency 936) tonight, or head to www.abc.net.au/radio to find
out how you can stream it. I'll be on Evenings with Annie Warburton
from 8pm, having a chat and playing a song or two. Then, get in your
car, still tuned to ABC Radio and drive to Irish Murphy's and come
inside to see Amy Kendall and the Kitchenhands play some tunes for you.
We're on at 10pm, after the Crystal Campbell band. Crystal has one of
the most amazing voices I've heard - she and her band are well worth
seeing!

We're trialling new band names, Amy and the Ken Dolls wasn't working....  someone called me Barbie... What do you think?

Pop on over to Facebook and say hi - and stay warm - the weather is cooling down quickly!

Hopefully
I'll be having some internet joy soon - right now it's a
technologically lacking household. We've set up the record player with
some new speakers (Everyone support their Tip Shop - I got two Pioneer
speakers and an amp for $30!) and it's been a 70s, 80s, 90s wonderland
right now. My favourite: Joan Armatrading circa 1987.

Speak to you soon!

Hello there internets!

It's been quite a while... this I know. There's big changes here at Amy HQ, and that's meant that there's less time for fun internets to make enough time for other stuff.

Amy and the Ken Dolls did a show at Irish Murphy's last Wednesday night. Lovely Donna Bergshoeff happened to show up, and I thrust my camera in her somewhat shocked arms ('But I just came to see you play Amy!') and she worked magic. :) Behold - Amy and the Ken Dolls, in medium resolution!

We had a great show - Tore folked on the bass, Andrew kept us all in steady rhythm, while I fussed about with my stomp boxes and tried to hold the banjo upright. (it's a heavy instrument compared to my Maton. Truly.)

We'll be appearing at Irish Murphy's again on April 16th, but in the meantime you can head over tohere and see for yourself. While you're out and about - sign up to the Reverbnation list -you'll get goodies! Click below...

Okay, that's enough shameless self promotion for tonight!

We'll chat soon internets, I promise!

So, Internets, finally an update on the Australian Blues Music Festival. There's been a whole other world going on at the same time since I arrived back - and suddenly it's three weeks since I got back!

I've never had as much fun as I did at the Blues Festival. We arrived in Sydney with an extraordinary amount of gear in tow. Andrew's carry on was a giant box of merchandise. Mine was several microphones and stomp boxes. We arrived in Sydney to the rain pouring down as we tried to find the hire car terminal. (Turns out, there's not a door to the outside world near the hire car bit in Sydney airport. It's a walk up and around and out the door across the road to the OTHER hire car terminal.)

Driving to Goulburn was a relatively uneventful trip - lots of rain involved and grey summer days. After settling in at Chateau Amy's Mum's House I fancied up and went to the Chain Awards evening. I met loads of the musicians also playing that weekend and saw lots of people I haven't seen for years - Goulburn being the home town and all.

A lovely evening was had by all, but eventually the 3am start caught up with me and I Yaris'd* home safely.

*We hired a Toyota Yaris. Compared to driving my musician Subaru Outback around home, a Yaris felt positively like it had wings. It became a verb to Yaris to drive zippily, with speed and gusto.

On Friday morning an early morning was had - we took the Yaris to Canberra for an interview on ArtsCafe on ArtSoundFM. Was lovely to meet Phil and have a chat about the album and the festival. Then we had drive through McD's and Yaris'd back to Goulburn for my show at the Bowling Club. (The sign out the front says 'XXXX GOLD THE BOWLO')

It was a great show - lovely crowd and a great venue. Competing with the announcements over the PA system downstairs 'Edna, please report to the front bar. Legs 11. Legs 11.' and the trains was unique! As there's no trains down here in Tasmania land (freight trains don't count!) this was a novelty for me.

Friday evening saw Family Kendall converge on a local restaurant and then head out to see Brian Fraser and Benny Owen play at the Workers Club - and I was blown away! Such a unique sound.

We then went on to see KNiki at the Bowling Club with her new band - a great big sound - the crowd loved it.

Saturday morning saw me playing in the Rotunda at Belmore Park, with the entire Family Smyth there as well - it was so lovely playing to both sides of my family and so many friends I haven't seen for so long. My mother volunteers for the Blues Festival every year and she spruiked my cds and took charge selling the merch for me. I really enjoyed the vibe of the park with the markets going on as well - and seeing people wander in and out of the show. Andrew took loads of photos (to come) as well.

Lunch with Family Smyth and cup of tea with Family Kendall and it was time to get ready for my last show at the Lieder Theatre. The Lieder is a lovely old theatre that's been a staple of the Goulburn arts scene for as long as I can remember. It's a small theatre with original flip up leather seats and wooden stage - it's glorious. And haunted.

I was completely blown away to see two special friends show up - one of the best musicians I've ever met Grant Burkitt and Cath Crawford. Grant and I met at music school in 2000, where he could be seen playing any instrument he could get his hands on, at any given time. He turned up at our house one day with a guitar he'd just finished making, for something to do. A resonator. *nod* Grant now makes guitars on spec for peeps all over Australia. He showed up, I asked if he had his harmonicas - he did. I played a song for him for approximately thirty seconds, and then he jumped up in the show and played one of the best harmonica tracks I've ever heard. Bless! Grant has also accepted our offer to become an honorary Ken Doll. :)

The Lieder show was very special - words fail me. It was the last show of the festival, the show where I felt the most connected with the audience, and where it all seemed to 'click'.

Jonno Zilber played there after me, and he tells me he loved the venue also. Mr Zilber is currently in Tasmania - you can see us together at the Republic Bar on Wednesday 11th at 9pm.

Back to the festival - on Saturday evening I had one of the worst meals I've ever eaten at a local Chinese restaurant, we waited two hours for our entrees. The food was relatively inedible and the proprieter didn't care. That bothers me. In a town packed with tourists and festival goers I think you should be on your game. Word of mouth is a powerful thing. However, that was the only blip on the horizon.

Sunday morning I went to the volunteers and performers breakfast and got to catch up with a lot of the performers and see Brian Fraser perform again. Go and check his cd out - www.brianfraser.com - you won't be sorry.

All too soon it was over - thank you to Sarah, Jenny, John and all at the Tourism Centre - you made my weekend so seamless and easy - and I've heard the same all over. Goulburn, you put on a fine welcome for visitors, I can't wait to come back and play again.

Photos to come!

x Amy
