hello everyone hows it going? we've been massivly busy of late. too busy even to blog infact, imagine that! so as its been a little while i thought id let u know we are all still alive and what we're been up too. cos its quite exciting.
during this time of darkness, lack of contact and seemingly small activity on our behalf we have been locking ourselves away in a barn in deepest surrey where we have built our own recording studio out of the soiled red carpet from the Kerrang awards (lifted from the company beneath ross's office), a mattress, some cushions and plenty of duck tape and staples to stick it to the roof. now this may not sound like the height of professionalism or quality to you, and to be honest it didnt to us either at first. but we have been making some sick sounds in that barn and with a swish computer and brand new spancing mics set up in there. our little barn is sounding awesome!! and has meant we have been recording a whole album worth of the best sounding sounds we've ever sounded. other amazingly awesome things about the barn studio include:
its next to the top gear track! it has its own eco system of bugs! its at our good freind sophie gordens house and the gordens are excellent people! they sometimes bring us brownies and tea while we are recording! they have a swimming pool! its on a farm and so all the animals get to run around and have a break for feedom when we turn off the electric fence because it interfears with the speakers and clicks on the recording. sorry again to the farmer. because its made out of award ceremony carpet its all red on the inside. its miles away from anywhere and takes abit of clever navigating to find, and is a good adventure in itself. iv actually had to look what side of the trees the moss was growing on to find my way there on my bike.
its brillient! but dispite all these distractions we've actually got quite a lot done. we currently have 16 tracks that we are doing of which we've already done: all the drums (which sound awesome and tight in the carpet room) all the bass (which sounds awesome good work dyl) all the guitar (which sounds awesome due to carpet room and rosses new amp) and all the horns (which sound awesome in the room and on that magic m3 mic)
so all in all, dont want to blow my own saxophone or anything, its sounding awesome!!! im well excited. iv been away sleeping on a beach in france for a week where i won a black eye surfing some of the biggest waves iv ever layed my eye on. but during that time robs been doing the keys and vocals and then we're pretty much done. this means that there is a full length Cats and Criminals album heading your way real soon. we're aiming for 16 tracks but if we decide some of them are not up to the quality we like to give you lovely demanding people then we might drop 1 or 2 but thats still loads!! are you excited? i am.
we'll keep you posted as to a release date but it will be available on I tunes and who knowes maybe even a shop or 2.
in other news now that we have crawled out of our recording hole and im back from me hols we are doing lots of gigs. horray!! after a month or so of no gigs its good to be back to it. theres a few on the gig list already and more to be added up shortly. so keep checking and we shall see you on the dance floors for a little boggie.
much love all and hope to see you soon
robin xx
oooh oooh and we're going to Go Ape on sunday for robs birthday woohoo!! these are good times indeed!

The 24th annual Cats and Criminals race to Putney took place last night. This years race took place after seeing our good friends “I am Vexed” (check em out for good times http://www.myspace.com/iamvexedmusic )single launch at the Water Rats. The chase was between our trusty trumpeteer James Lowe Vs myself (robin) The rules are simple Kings Cross to Putney station, last one there loses. James chose the public transport option while I went for my trusty push bike. The Gun went at about midnight and I was immediately set back by James’s cunning tactics of pointing me in the direction of north London and shouting GO! but i wasnt fooled for long and was soon gunning it back south. Bastard. Racing through the streets like a bat out of Hull I cleverly took the scenic route past Buckingham Palace, lots of flags out for the queen, happy birthday máum. By the time id got to Victoria my legs were starting to seize up and I decided sprinting the whole way was probably not possible. But the adrenaline and strongbow in my body overcame the fatigue and with a few hearty WHOOP WHOOP!s i was back in the race. Giving it everything I eventually rushed over chutney bridge, tears of adrenaline flowing down my face, screeching to an emphatic hault outside the station I made the call. “where are you?” “……2 stops away” YEAAAHHHHH!!!!!! In your face Lowe. I made good on my lead and we agreed to race the rest of the way home to Rohampton Vale. After going too fast down the hill and hitting a curb that nearly sent me flying into a police car I sprinted to catch the 85 bus that had overtaken me at the last minuit but as I pulled up to the people getting off james wasn’t on it. Haha. And I even had time to buy him a wooden spoon at Asda. Its official 2 wheels are faster than….um about 20 (don’t know how many wheels are on a train? but +4 for bus) James please document your experiences on your route of the race. Got to try and make it exciting, cant wait for the “sat on train” description haha. Bikes, it turns out, are the way. Robin

Ok so i feel i should explain my reasons for not being at the gig last wednesday, my sincere appologies for not making it but as excueses go this is a pretty good story. and it deserves to be told.
i had just finished work in central london and had a few hours to kill before the rest of the band arrived for soundcheck in covent garden. so i went up to the G20 protests to lend my support to the climate camp that had set up on bishops gate road with tents, kitchens and soundsystems to peacefully protest that climate change issues were being sidelined by the G20. while i was there i randomly met up with a few freinds from devon and a good freind of mine lovingly let me know he was there by trying to trip me up, which was a lot nicer than it sounds. good times were had amongst freinds and we danced and laughed and marvelled at the impenitrable barrier which was the strong point of the camps defence, this cleverly consisted of my mates bike chained to a few others and a thin bit of ribbon. surely this well planned defence would keep out any police attempts to move us on. as i was about to leave to meet the rest of the band a shout was raised that the police were moving in. now growing up in devon i'd been in some pretty serious village protests before where we would block entire country lanes, and i was ready for the vicious police tactics i knew would come, asking us politly to move on, and threatening to call our parents. i knew how to deal with this! i linked arms with fellow protestors and prepared myself for some serious banter with the officers, but was a tad supprised when a 3 deep row of fully equiped riot police in close formation charged towards us. we held our ground.
we were perpared, the row of police reached the impenitrable bike ribbon fence but against all the odds, a whole 15 seconds later they were through and the anguished cry of "my bike!!" could be heard across london. we didnt have long to morn the loss of my mates bike though as this now meant we were now face to face (well... face to shield) with an unbelievebley aggressive group of riot police. we wern't giving any ground but we weren't fighting back. we kept our arms linked and stayed low. partly because this was a strong body position to hold our ground and partly because anyone who stood up high was getting a baton or shield quickly introduced to their heads. i couldnt quite believe that this peaceful protest (and it was, check the news) was being attacked by the hardcore elite of the met. it was properly brutal. not one of the protestors i was with fought back and i saw police punch teenage girls in the face and baton guys who were doing nothing but standing in a road with a cause and refusing to move. this wasn't a riot. why were there riot police here? in peaceful unison we shouted chants of "shame on you" and "this is not a riot" while they contradicted us by hitting us in the head with their riot gear.
eventually there was nothing for it we were being pushed back and the only peaceful response left was to sit down. so everyone did. in the face of violent attackers we collectivley and peacefully sat down. and only then did they stop. it was a damn good moment seeing violence stopped by peace. no-one losing it and fighting back. we had held our line agaisnt riot cops using only a few mates and some peace. but it came at a cost to those expecting to see a full line up of cats and criminals at belushis in covent garden that night.
the police kept their line too and had moved from both ends of the street so we were now stuck between the two shield lines. we were informed that they had declared a "section 14", which still sounds like a resident evil quarentine and i still need someone to explain this to me, which basically turned out to mean they would keep us detained there for 4 hours, without being let out for water, without being let out to use the loo and more importantly without being let out to play a gig! i even promiced i would come back afterwards, but nothing!
if i hadnt needed to get to the gig this would have been brillient since staying in the street was what everyone else had been intending to do anyway. but i had to inform the band i might be late for the gig tonight because i had accidentally got attacked by riot police and was being held without question in a climate camp. (not the most believeable excuse iv ever come up with) however they were quite sypathetic to my cause (cheers guys) and leant what help they could. i got a text from Ross who told me I'd be fine, he had spoken to a policeman in covent garden who had said they arnt holding anyone and he'll be free to go. but suprisingly this didnt go down too well with the burley offices behind the shields. the exchange went like this.
"hello officer" "...." " my guitarist has spoken to one of your collegues in covent garden and im told he said i could just go is that alright?" "no"
thanks or trying though ross. Dylans sympathy stretched to the following txt...
"robin if you weren't such a commie you'd be in burger king now!"
so the hours went by and it looked like i definatly wasnt going to make the gig. during our 4 hour street quarentine we passed the time by playing a game of I Spy with my little eye. where or the first time ever in one game we spied O for oppression, S for solidarity, U for unity, and U for uncertanty in the eyes of the police. my freind kept explaining how the bike ribbon fence had been how we gained the advantage in the push as it threw them and they didnt know what to do. (for the 15 seconds it took to tear it down) I managed to borrow a camera phone from a nice random lady and took the only photo (above) i could so sorry its rubbish. you can make out the line of police in the background.
by the time we were eventually let out the gig was over. i really appologise for not making it, i tried my best. on the up side im told it was an ace gig, so good work if you were there.
afterwards we helped carry the camp kitchins back to the climate camp convergance where it got more scary as police were taking photos of everyone who came in and out of the building . it was an awesome place with good people who were serving food to protestors and offering beds for the night. and had i stayed the night which was generously offered to me i would have been wrongly arrested with everyone else in there as i saw the police raid it the next morning on the news. i dont understand why they can or would do this as that was one of the most peaceful and welcoming places i have ever been.
so there's my excuse. although im annoyed i missed the gig im glad i was there to lend my support to the cause of climate change awearness. and to help stand (or sit) against violence. i met some good people. and some good friends. and it was good to get in trouble with my childhood freind again. it had been a while. see you all at a gig where i am not detained by force, tomorrow maybe.
much love Robin xx
p.s. found a timeline of events from indie media which gives a better account of things than i did. i was at the south end of the climate camp from about 17:30. looks like it got pretty out of hand later on.
