Just a reminder that The Hitchers play Dolans Warehouse here in Limerick tomorrow night 24.1.09.
It should be a hell of a night with great bands on the bill, it's in aid of a great cause -Limerick Youth Service, and we'll be kicking off 2009 and our 20th Anniversary with a fierce rowdy set.

In other good news we're delighted to be able to report we've come across a small batch of our back catalogue which is now up for sale here in the club shop on myspace so to speak.

Available once again -for the first time in years -are the two albums 'It's All Fun & Games Til Someone Loses An Eye' (1997) and 'For The Want of Some Better TV' (1999)
Also available again are the singles/EPs from the Murgatroid era as well. That's the 'Killed It With My Bare Hands' single on CD and 7" vinyl, The 'Strachan/You Can Only love Someone' and 'Big Mug' EPs.

It's worth noting these are not re-issues -their genuine bona fide 1990's stock that had been lying up in an attic or closet somewhere. Get em while they're ..um ...fresh?

20 years ago this week ...a bunch of teenagers gathered in Limerick Youth Service Center on Lower Glentworth Street.
They tidied away most of the tables and chairs in what was a fully functioning coffee shop and bakery by day.
They set up and plugged in a cobbled together backline of dodgy, noisy, buzzing musical equipment and played to an audience of their friends and peers who'd braved the cold wet Friday evening in January to hang out in pretty much the only place an under-18 could (legally) go see a rock band in Limerick. That was The Hitchers first gig*.

Now, you may have heard that The Hitchers are playing Dolans Warehouse on Saturday the 24th January. It appears that, like puppies ...a hitcher aint just for Christmas ...well not this year anyway.
We're delighted to confirm it's true and honoured to be on a bill that spans decades of Limrock history and includes legends like THE OUTFIT,
current top cats GIVEAMANAKICK, next big things WALTER MITTY & THE REALISTS and SIZE 2 SHOES as well, of course, as token beaten dockets THE HITCHERS.

It'd have taken something special to get us off the private beach in Barbados we tend to winter in (yes ...we use 'winter' as a verb) with Noddy Holder, Roy Wood and Shakin Stevens to wind down after the Christmas slog and the stars just seemed to align as if pre-ordained for this one.

The gig, which is part 1 of a 5 part series of events planned for 2009 celebrating Limerick and entitled LIVING FOR THE CITY, ( www. livingforthecity. eu ) is in aid of LIMERICK YOUTH SERVICE.

Now -because I was a dedicated note taker (though, in fairness, not as bad a s a lass we used hang out with back in the day who used jot down details of people who owed her a drag on a ciggie!) , scrapbooker and quite the retentive archivist I can hereby present....
*The Set (Limerick Youth Service Center, Friday 20th January 1989):
1.Hoss' New One (?)/Horse Latitudes (first bit refers to un-named Hoss tune -I'm guessing the second part there refers to a Doors song I'm sure I can't hum)
2.Drive He Said (a Doctor & the Medics song)
3.The Streakers of Newcastle (our own -later appeared on our first proper demo tape)
4. Laurence Beals Subway Heals (our own -good tune, silly lyrics ...topsoil broken, furough started I suppose)
5.Alice is Here (our own -later appeared on The Reindeer Age compilation, on our first EP and video)
6.It's Got Nothing To Do With Me (our own but barely -gratuitous rip off of the Housemartins)
7. The Nile Song (Pink Floyd ...we used do this one pretty well.No shit!)
8. Spirit In The Sky (more Medics ...well, Norman Greenbaum actually)
9. Sweet Sixteen Emergency Units (our own - survived well into the 90's ...demoed for Fun & Games!)
10.I'll Be Holdin My Head Up High (our own -can't remember it at all -might've had a gag about decapitation)
11.All This Everything (our own -later first demo, first national airplay (fanning sep 89), had a G-sharp-minor in it!)
12. Johnny B. Goode (I bullshit you not ...we played this. Go Donnacha! Go, Go, Go!!!)
13.Minefields (our own - was probably a bit crap)
14.Drop Down Dead (an honest straight up Housemartins song- our version might even've been as good as theirs)
15.Roadhouse Blues (more Doors)
16. Good Morning God (our own -one and only time played. Turned up a year later on The Cranberry Saw Us demo though.)
..............................................................................
Starting line-up on the night: Eoin - Vocals, Hoss -Bass, Donnacha - Guitar, Niall - Drums.

Extending the long line of tradition (again -go ask that gastrotrich) that has seen some of the very finest purveyors of new music on Shannonside get The Hitchers Christmas Party underway -THE DEMISE and FOX JAW BOUNTY HUNTERS are hereby confirmed to be appearing as special guests of The Hitchers on Saturday 27th December at Baker Place.

Tickets, keenly priced at €8, are on sale now through The Hitchers website www.thehitchers.eu and here on www.myspace.com/thehitchersonmyspace

More about our illustrious guests...

The Demise "The Demise take from a wide range of influences to put together a sound that
some have described as “songs by The Offspring and Rise Against played by
members of Thin Lizzy"... http://www.myspace.com/thedemiselimerick

Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters  "Fox Jaw Bounty Hunters have emerged from Limerick with a piledriving sound that could curdle milk at a hundred paces...." -Jackie Hayden, HOT PRESS http://www.myspace.com/foxjawbountyhunters

You know Christmas is coming when Press Releases from The Hitchers start landing on the mat, inbox, bulletin board or other.

The Hitchers Annual Christmas Re-Union Party moves house this year back to one of the bands oldest haunts Baker Place on Saturday December 27th.

Yes, this year they're taking the rock'n'roll mayhem up the road a little as, for only the second time in this long and ancient tradition (well go ask a Gastrotrich how long and ancient they think seven or eight years is) the show leaves the magnificent Dolans for another of Limericks venerable live music hostelries Baker Place for a fitting and indeed overdue return to the most frequented hunting ground of The Hitchers on all Shannonside back in the day.

We're really looking forward to this as it'll actually be our 20-somethingt show at Bakers but our first since we were 20-somethings. The venue has come on leaps and bounds since we last played there back at the turn of the millenium and it's shaping up to be quite a night.

In other good news there'll be an expanded selection of CDs and records on sale at the gig going right back to and including the LPs, singles and EPs released on the Murgatroid label in the mid to late 90's.

Full details of supports, special guests and DJs to be announced later.

Tickets are on sale now through The Hitchers website www.thehitchers.eu and on www.myspace.com/thehitchersonmyspace

2008 was a quiet year all things considered …though BBC replayed the Peel Session earlier on and the video for Strachan, which first appeared on the 'tube back in Summer, has fast become one of the great underground successes of the year.  Check it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OeizDWjm7Do

'Liver' got a rare radio airing last night on the Dave Fanning show. Friday night is theme night and last nights theme was songs about hacking people up.

Okay it wasn't ...the theme was 'food'. Though maybe it should've been disqualified on a technicality. ...they disqualified Tori Amos' Power of Orange Knickers. Liver was in good company with Chefs 'Choclate Salty Balls' and The 'Stones 'Brown Sugar'

Gideon Coe played 'Wannabee' and 'The Urge to Kill' from The Hitchers 1997 Peel Session on his show last night (4.2.08) and said he'll play the other two soon.

You can catch the show again here...

...also played some excellent stuff from Nada Surf, Florence and The Machine, Therapy? and American Music Club.

Hi folks and happy new year to all. The christmas gigs in Galway and Limerick went very well indeed. Many thanks to all who made them happen and to the other bands who played over the two nights (We Should Be Dead, Mark O'Connor and Seneca).

Our seventh gig since splitting up (yes... we're ridiculous ...we know) took us back to Galway for the first time since September 2000 when we did our first show (of only about half a dozen) without Hoss on bass duties. This time Mr. Carnage was back at the helm of course and, like the rest of us, raring to go.

Those of you who've been to any of The Hitchers Christmas shows might know that we have not one, not two but three intro tunes!

You've probably wondered how far exactly up our own arses we are but if ever proof was needed of their neccessity we got it in Galway. Tight for changeover time we dropped Lonnie Donegans 'Tom Dooley' and went straight to Johnny Cash' version of 'The Mercy Seat'. Cue pandemonium of the "my hair's a feck", "I need a piss!!!", "where's my drumsticks/head-massage/pint?" variety. As Johnny fades straight into (our own) 'Unfair Dismissals Tribunal' and we've to start 'Liver' out of that there was no time to leave the stage. We made it -just.

So there we were with empty glasses and brimful bladders. But that was mercifully the worst of our troubles over ...seven broken drumsticks notwithstanding. There's a few videos from the gig on youtube and you can see a couple of drumsticks shatter and fly off hither and tither.

Thanks again to Gugai and all at the Róisín Dubh who were excellent hosts.

Limerick the following night was, as always, an absolute blast. The 'End of Tour Party' that was threatening to kick off since mid-afternoon was mercifully kept in check til near showtime so we were still match-fit. Apologies to those looking for Small and Medium Tee-Shirts ....the Galwegians bought them all. A new batch is due back from the makers this week. Our new Tee (I'll find a pic somewhere and post it up) has a picture of the plane featured in the Killed It With My Bare Hands video. Most of you will neither know nor care that the aircraft in question, a WW2 British built Boulton Paul Defiant, could probably fight off all comers for the title of Crappiest Combat Aircraft Ever. It's conception involved a highly misguided premise and proceeded to the design stage in tragic fashion from there. If we Irish ever designed a combat aircraft... I'll stop now.

Anyway, Limerick was great. Thanks to all at Dolans who were magnificent as always and thanks to all who attended either (or both!!) shows and fingers crossed we'll see ye again at the arse end of 2008 if everyone stays fit, healthy and inclined.

Set list (Both Gigs): Liver/ Even at Your Bravest/ Sure/Killed it With My Bare Hands/ 4.30... Two Down/Line Dance Finals Massacre/For the Want of Some Better TV/ Strachan/  The Urge to Kill/ Wannabee/ Aryan Beach Party/ U Can Du/ You Can Only Love Someone So Much.../ One Last Song/ Red Mohair Jumper (with a little bit of 'Make Me an Island' tacked on ...RIP Joe Dolan) / Mama Mia/ Getting Rid of The Hitchers
