I've recently come to the decision to use Ubuntu as my primary operating system and having my Window's setup as my redundant operating system. I've been thinking about this for a few months now; I don't really want to pay for an operating system and at the same time I don't want to illegally download one either. Windows 7 does look like a good operating system but it does come with a price tag that is just a bit to expensive for what I'm used to buying. I believe the most I've ever spend of a piece of software would have been Fallout at £40.
Just over two months ago I actually un-installed all of my illegal software and replaced it with open source software which is a decision that I'm glad I made because it has increased my computer performance so much and gave back some of my hard drive space. I saved over half a gigabyte just by replacing Microsoft Office 2007 with OpenOffice.Org and Thunderbird. I do prefer Thunderbird to Outlook I must say myself.
For those have no idea what Ubuntu is; it is an operating system that is 100% open source and absolutely free. It uses the Gnome user interface (Apple Inc. based their operating system on Gnome user interface by the way) which is simple to use and navigate; it would be easy for a computer novice to use. It boots up so much faster than my Windows Vista install and I'm not to sure about Windows XP either. It comes package with a shit lot of software straight out of the box.
So all I need to do now is buy a brand new hard drive for my Ubuntu installation and keep my Windows install unplugged except from if I do need it. I though I would go for a 250GB hard drive (Seagate of course) since I won't be playing games or anything like that so I won't be doing anything about it until next weekend. Anyway, I'm going to go play some Skate 2 now.
See ya Boni Boy Blue xD

Army of Two is a good game; it's not the best third person shooter but it is a fun game to play. The two man co-op is a nice touch. The best thing about this game is how your survival depends on how you work as a time. One man killing sprees are hard in this game without getting killed unless your playing of the easier levels.
Story - 6/10 The story is so short it's unbelievable, a casual gamer could complete this game in about 8-10 hours and a hardcore gamer would finish this in an afternoon. The story is hard to describe without revelling too much but the idea that two comrades are hired by a private military contractor that desire to become the main tool of war, for profit of course, and really the two mercenaries are in the wrong place at the wrong time. The locations and the progress of the story are different depending on the mission as each mission will progress the time a year or two. The different location include Iraq, China and even the United States. There is even a piece of downloadable content that changes the ending so the playing can now fight the final boss which is a must get to play this game as it makes it feel more complete.
Gameplay - 7/10 The gameplay is similar to most third person shooter games using the shoulder buttons as the way to fire your weapons and to use grenades. The player can only use 4 types of weapons while on the battlefield; these weapons are one primary weapon, one secondary weapon, special weapon and grenades. Weapons can be bought on the in-game store, they can also be customized to provide more damage and accuracy. There is a good supply of different weapons that can be bought with the money obtained by completing objectives.
The most important part of Army of Two is the co-operative gameplay using the computer AI. Army of Two uses a mechanism called Aggro. In other words, if one of the characters are firing at the enemy then their attention will be focused on that character; this then allows the other character to sneak around the enemy and this can work either way. That's the basics of how aggro works. This is some times essential with some of the heavy armoured enemies.
The cover system is nothing new but does add a few new tweaks that are pretty cool. The player can cover behind most objects to include walls and objects broken on the ground. The player can then blind fire safely or pop his head out for a more accurate shot but be subject to getting fired at. The coolest thing about the cover system is car doors can be broken off the used as a moving shield for head-on firefights; this is one of the better methods against the 50 calibre machine guns. As being a co-op game, there are unique features to the game including step-up function for those high ledges.
The healing system can be a nightmare at times; the idea is if you or your partner is ingured (in other words, his health is depleted) then he is to be first dragged to safety so he can be healed safely. At the same time though the injured character can fire his gun for extra cover. The problem is, sometimes, when your AI partner is dragging you to safety he will walk straight into a group of enemies. The other thing that might happen is he might stop to heal the player in the middle of the battlefield where he is sill getting shot at and this stop the healing process and can be pretty frustration and might lead to a console reset.
Graphics - 8/10 Not much to say about the graphics, their good graphics the only real problem with a lot of other games are that they have a maximum resolution of 720p and that's just not good enough for the PlayStation 3 or hardcore gamers. The in-game graphics are nothing to raise the roof about but they are nice to look at. The GPS is a different matter, it's good for finding out where the next objective is or the path to follow but when the mode is on enemies cannot be seen so this requires the GPS to be turned off. The animations are smooth and have no problem in the game, they can be a little funny and sometimes stupid; A great example of this is the close quarters grapple moves and the way the enemies are sometimes blown 20 feet back from a bullet.
The cutscenes are different and are a vast improvement over the in-game graphics; they are more like animated videos with more of a CGI feel to them. There pretty good and are really nice on the eyes. It's just a wonder why so much detail was put into the cutscenes and not as much on the in-game graphics and really it's a shame to be honest as the game could be a lot more beautiful.
Sound/Voice Acting - 7/10 The voice actors do a great job and the dialogue is very well done between the two characters. It is through these dialogues that the plot is uncovered and gives the player a rough idea of what's going on around them.
Now for the sound in general, it's good for the most part. The battlefield sounds pretty realistic minus of the artillery fire but the biggest downfall of Army of Two is the sound of the guns. They just don't sound like guns at all but instead like someone firing a paint gun. This is one of the biggest let downs of a shooting game when the firearms that are being fired sound nothing like guns.
Overall - 7/10 Army of Two is a great game but does have a few flaws that keep it back from being a future classic game. It is also a very very short game which is quite a shame because the game is really enjoyable and the short story is a shame. There will be an Army of Two 2 and hopefully the developers will have seen their previous mistakes and implement them into the sequel. I would like to see the voice cast in the new game too as those actors where great together.

Ricky Gervais is someone that I have never liked or disliked. I'll always remember him in the office and I'll always remember how much I despised that show and wanted the the show to just go away along with all the hype about cause; it would really do my nut in when some of my friend would talk about it like it was the best show but I really didn't have a problem with them liking it cause we're all different in the end, it was just they'd always talk about it in front of me. Other than that the only other place I had really had heard any Ricky Gervais comedy was on Grand Theft Auto 4 as he is one of the stand-ups that made an appearance on the in-game comedy club and it was okay but I wasn't interested in it but I really believe that was because I was playing GTA and wanted to blow stuff up.
Now to the good bit, I recently, in the past few weeks, purchased one of his films without actually knowing Ricky Gervais was in it called Ghost Town after a friend recommended it. It was a pretty funny flick and I highly recommend the film for those people that would like a laugh and it was then I realised that Ricky Gervais was a pretty funny dude. Although he is no where near as funny as my two favourite comedians' Billy Connolly and Frankie Boyle but he did get a few laughs out of me. It was this weekend that my girlfriend had the weekend off work so we decided to go for a trip to the cinema. I really wanted to see the Bruce Willis film Surrogates but I was bitch slapped down so noticing that it had Ricky Gervais we decided to see The Invention of Lying and though that it would be good film and a good laugh.
The film was good, I wouldn't say it was epic or the best I've since in a while but it was a laugh. It's about an alternative world in which the inhabitants haven't figured out how to lie so everyone tells the truth and is sometime quite out there and can be quite harsh. Although as the movie progresses Ricky Gervais's character finally figures out how to lie and since the civilisation has no idea how to lie, they all assume that Ricky Gervais's character is telling the truth so the character has some fun with this to turn his life about and hopefully get the girl he has always wanted. It's not the best film in the world but a nice little comedy. I wouldn't compare this to epic comedies like Knocked Up but give the film a chance and maybe your like me and you'll realise that Ricky Gervais is pretty good comedian. If I had to the the film I would give it a 7 out of 10.
Hope you enjoyed my little review.

I really have to give it to Sony, I though that their hand-held game console the PlayStation Portable was dying for a few months now and I wasn't too sure if the PSP Go would help but I have to admit that I was wrong. The PSP section of the PlayStation store has flourished over the past weeks, not just for the new PSP Go but also for the older series of PSP. Sony has given me a reason to get out my old PSP 1000 with the huge store update. Sony has added a helluva a lot of PSP games and there is even a rumour that Sony are going to do some game rentals which is pretty cool since the PSP games are pretty short compared to home console games. The only thing that I'm not too sure about are the minis, I'm not saying that the games are bad but I'm wary at paying £4 for a mini game that may or may not be shit. Although I would like a demo or a trail period some of the games are classics like Tetris and Sudoku I'm not too worried as I can look on the internet before I buy a game from the minis section. A good friend of mine has post reviews on a few of them over at this portable gaming blog here.
I've also heard that Microsoft are looking into making an arcade room for the Xbox 360 avatar where they can play game with their friend. A bit like home but I must say if PlayStation Home had an arcade room with more than just a few games I would start going on it more as right now I only really play it when I fancy a game of bowling which I'm shit at but that's never bothered me. I just think it would be cool if there was a Pac-Man arcade tournament on Home or atleast something like that to make it a little bit more fun.
Since this post was about Sony I though I should tell you guys about this epic-ly awesome game that I'm really looking forward to called Dragon Age: Origins. It's a medieval fantasy role playing game developed by Bioware (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic & Mass Effect are some of there well known games) and it reminds me of a more violent version of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion. It's due out on the 22nd November 2009. Here's a link to the trailer over at ScrewAttack.
Thanks for reading, I'm going to play some Skate 2 now; the game is awesome by the way much better than any Town Hawk game.
Until next time,

Mercenaries 2 is a sandbox free-roam action game with having almost every building able to be demolished. The game is a squeal to the hit game for Xbox and PlayStation 2 Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. The sequel stays with it's roots and is based around the same element of gameplay with updates. The destruction ability of which the first game was praised for has also made a return.
Story - 7/10
The story is lacks a lot of depth and is very short and can be completed without trying in about 6-7 hours but that being said there are a lot of side missions to be done like capturing high value targets and destroying certain buildings. To complete the game 100% it will take longer maybe ranging from about 10 - 20 hours so that makes up for the short story.
The basic story without any spoilers is about the player's chosen mercenary being betrayed on a mission and then wants to get revenge on the person that betrays them. The mercenary doesn't actually know where he is hiding to they work with factions in exchange for information.
Gameplay - 9/10
Mercenaries 2 is a third person shooter with a sandbox style of gameplay; the player can freely explore with restriction to begin with but which are lifted as the game begins. There are a range of weapons that available for the mercenary from handguns to carbine rifles but only two forms for throwing weapons which include grenades and C4 explosives that are very powerful against buildings. The mercenary can call in air-strikes that they buy from faction shops or steal from them, there are many different types that can cause serious damage. Each air-strike has a different effect depending on what it is designed for; a tank buster will send a bomb down to all tanks in range of the smoke signal while a mother of all bombs will destroy everything in it's path. Other than air-strikes and supplies, the mercenary can call in help to have vehicles delivered to their position including tanks and helicopters.
The mercenary is able to hijack vehicles to from the enemies and then later in the game; will be able to hijack helicopters. This acts out as a quick time event that requires the player to press certain buttons or push the analogue stick a certain way. If all is done correctly the mercenaries will be in control of the vehicle. Vehicle controls vary depending on the vehicle itself, a normal car will use the 'X' button accelerate and the 'square' button to reverse while a tank uses the left and right analogue sticks.
Every building in the game can be destroy, depending on how big the building is it will it will take more for a larger building to fall than a smaller building. Destroying the builds is one of the most funniest things to do in Mercenaries 2 and it could give the mercenary an advantage as some buildings are occupied by enemies that fire rockets at the mercenary.
Graphics - 7/10
The graphics are nice but they could have been a lot more better if EA never rushed the product out to the shelves. The landscapes of the game are nice and visually beautiful and the character designs are nice but they seem to be a bit stale with the expressions like when the mercenary fires the gun they make a grinding teeth like face and that seems to be the only expression that all the mercenaries have. Also when the player is standing still and turns the camera sometimes the screen gets dotty and looks very unattractive.
The cutscenes are terrible, they are all fuzzy and stretched and not at all at 720p quality. The good thing is there is not many of these cutscenes. Now, the animations are nicely done and although may not look fully realistic they are fun including some of the quick time events. The melee attacks are also pretty funny when they are send flying miles back.
The graphics for the buildings being destroyed are amazing, it is nice to call in an air-strike and watch the chaos at a distance. The air-strikes themselves are awesome and are nicely done and fun to use even if there is no reason to do it.
Sound/Voice Acting 6/10
The voices of the mercenaries are the same actors as the previous Mercenaries game, this was a nice touch but the phrases are so overused that hearing their voice will get so annoying. It doesn't help that each of the characters will use the same phrase that other mercenaries use. The cutscenes are okay but are always filled with some soft of pun that just seems unnecessary.
The sound of the guns are nicely done but by the far the best is the air-strikes and the explosions they cause; these sound very realistic and add to the fun of the chaos that is being cause. The biggest downfall in relation to the sound is cars; the tanks sound great but when it comes to the car they don't seem finished and engine noises are a massive let-down. That being said though and helicopters are excellent sound that are really realistic.
Overall - 8/10
Mercenaries 2 is one helluva fun game and the flaws that it does have shouldn't ruin the gaming experience. With destructive environments and a lot of fun things to do this is a great game even it does feel half finished. This is a recommended game or least give the game a rent and go destroy everything in sight.

Metal Gear Solid 4 is to date the biggest game ever made on a game console having to use a dual-layered blu-ray disk which can hold up to 50GB of data. Having some the the best graphics made for the PlayStation system Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of the most anticipated games of the 7th generation of game consoles.
Story - 10/10
The story was said to be the last episode of Solid Snake and Hideo Kojima does an excellent job at it though it may leave you wondering 'what!?!' and forcing you to replay the previous games to refresh your memory. The basic plot of the story is that Roy Campbell has asked Solid Snake (now under the code name Old Snake due to the rapid ageing he has suffered) to assassinate Liquid Ocelot. The Metal Gear Solid 4 story answers all the question left from previous games and successfully closes the story and life of Solid Snake. The set of bosses in the game known as the Beauty and the Beast Unit are one of the weirdest in the whole Metal Gear Solid series and have combining features of previous game's bosses.
Gameplay - 9/10
The biggest addition to Metal Gear Solid 4 is the OctoCamo, designed by Octacon it can blend into the surroundings that Old Snake is currently in. This is a tool that the player will have to use to sneak past the enemies. Although OctoCamo is useful, there is a manual setting so a player can choose what camo to use which can be downloaded from the extra section in the main menu or saved manually from in-game. There is a massive list of weapons that can be obtained from the battlefield or bought from the in-game shop from basic handguns to fully automatic machine guns and of course explosives ranging from a hand grenade to a portable anti-tank rocket launcher.
The cutscenes from the game have to be the longest from any Metal Gear game, almost all lasting over 10 minutes long but it is these scenes that are a crucial part of the story. The cutscenes are interactive that allows the player to receive flashbacks from previous games or watch through the first person view of Old Snake.
Metal Gear Solid games are known for their sneaking instead of fire-fighting through the hordes of enemies and the improved engine shows a lot of enhancements from Metal Gear Solid 3. The notable improvements is the crouch, Old Snake is able to walk while crouching to stay closer to the ground and stay out of sight on enemies. When Snake lies down of the ground he can now play dead and move very slowly to sneak up on enemies.
The boss battles of the game are some of the best in any Metal Gear Solid game and are quite challenging at the higher difficulties. Stealth has a great effect on boss battles this time. Snake can hide from the bosses themselves and ambush them. There is a tough new enemy in Metal Gear Solid 4 known as a Metal Gear Gekko, they are agile walking metal gears that can dish out a great deal of damage.
Graphics - 10/10
The graphics are beautiful for both game and cutscenes. A lot of effort was put into the graphics and Kojima showcases this right away when the game first starts to install to the PlayStation 3 hard drive. Snake is smoking a cigarette and the detail put into it is just amazing. The character's motion is the one of the best ever seen in game and almost looks real. The facial expressions and the way the hair moves are a great touch to the graphics, the same goes for all character's including the PCMs and the rebel forces. Take out the gameplay and combine all the cutscenes together then this would make a great film.
There are 5 different stages set in different parts of the world and each and every one of these locations are amazingly designed with almost no part being left untouched and the redesigned Shadow Moses was excellent and does the original Metal Gear Solid justice with the well designed stage, although some things have changed but this most likely due to the power cut.
Sound/Voice Acting 10/10
As with any other Metal Gear Solid game there is a full voice cast, the voice actors are mostly voiced by their previous voice actors, David Hayter returns are the voice of Old Snake. The voices are very well done and are flawless with the facial movements of the characters themselves.
The sound effects in the game are superb, there is a lot of noise on a battlefield and Metal Gear Solid 4 does a great job at making this seem as realistic sounding as possible from the bombs falling down to the sound of a gun firing with excellent synchronisation with the DualShock 3 controller.
Now to the music, Harry Gregson-Williams returns for Metal Gear Solid 4 for some new pieces including the Old Snake theme. The music is professionally done and is used for in-game effects like increasing Snake's psyche meter. Snake carries an iPod with him into battle and from downloading and finding songs in-game Snake can listen to a lot of songs from previous Metal Gear games and other Kojima games.
Overall - 10/10
Metal Gear Solid 4 is one of the biggest game ever made to date and has some of the best story writers. Metal Gear Solid 4 is the last episode of Solid Snake and Hideo Kojima has created a masterpiece which as won numerous game of the year 2008 awards for both readers' choice and editors' choice. The future is unclear about Solid Snake and maybe we will make a return, maybe he won't. Just have to wait and see.

I signed up for the M.A.G
beta last week from the Europe PlayStation blog, at the time I didn't
think that I would actually get accepted but I just got an e-mail
yesterday saying I was in. So I downloaded it from the PlayStation
Store soon after. First impressions were pretty good, with a game
featuring 256 players on one map on a console the frame rate was pretty
stable with the game running at about 60 frames per second. The
graphics aren't the best but the game is in beta so I didn't expect
much. I'll do a much detailed review next week.
I'm pretty bummed out that Reaper is finished, although the ending
was pretty good and I didn't expect it. I've also been playing a lot of
PlayStation 3 over the past two weeks and that's why I've not really
posted anything for a while. I've been playing Metal Gear Solid 4
again. I've been trying to go for a no kills/alerts game on big boss
extreme and it's proving difficult. The other game I've been playing is
Mercenaries 2: World in Flames which is an epic game in my eyes. You
can also see my views next week when I finish my review for both the
games. Let me finish by saying if you would like to add on PlayStation
Network my ID is 'boniboyblue'.
That's all for now people, cheers for reading

Utility software is software that is designed to help the performance to your computer. With the Windows operating systems there are a set of utility programs but going by experience they are quite rubbish. So here are a group of utility program that I recommend to you to use regularly and since I don't like spending money all these programs are free.
Ccleaner
Ccleaner is a system cleaning tool and a registry cleaner. It is very useful and will delete all of those useless files that will slow the performance of your operating system. The software has an option to save cookies so they won't be deleted for those sites that you love. I really recommend this software and suggest that everyone should get it. I use this every-night before I shut-down my computer and I usually clean at least 100MB alone from Firefox. A new feature that is quite new allows you to delete system restore points except the most recent which could save about 5GB each on Vista. It should be noted that Windows includes a built-in system cleaner, it's okay and does the job for Windows software but Ccleaner supports so much more including Firefox, Opera, Adobe Flash, and even Google Chrome. Get it now!
Defraggler
A disk defragger is is must for any Windows users, over time the hard drive will jumble all the files about and take longer for Windows to read the files. This is where is gets a bit technical; A disk defragger will re-arrange the contents of your hard drive physically but you will not see a difference on your computer, the files will still be where you saved them. This will help your hard access files faster and can increase operation speeds which is an all round good thing. Defraggler is one of these programs that will do this for you and it is one of the best. I use it myself and I have never had a problem with it. There a few cool features like a auto-shutdown when the defragging finishes which is pretty cool for me. I really recommend that you defrag your computer overnight as it can take a while. Don't use Windows disk defragmenter use Defraggler it is so much better.
Recuva
Have you ever deleted a files and been like “Shit, Fuck, can't believe I deleted that”. I have and I was over the moon when I found Recuva an application from the same guys that brough us Ccleaner and Defraggler. Recuva will recover files that you have deleted as long as their physical data has not be overwritten. It works pretty good in the quick scan but I have some times has to endure the 2 hour scan but this program has never failed me. Give it a try.
Avast Anti-Virus
Their has been a debate weather anti-virus is utility software but to me it is a type of utility so I'm including this. Avast Anti-Virus Home edition is a free edition of the Avast. It's a real-time anti-virus scanner and a pretty good one that updates almost daily. It has a few cools features that include boot-time scans, hard drive scan, themeable interface and a quarantined chest where virus are stored to begin with for safety. These files will not be able to access your OS now. There are a few different free anti-virus which include AVG, Nod32 and ClamWin but I've never tried them cause I've always been happy with Avast.
Spybot: Search & Destroy
Spyware most of the time is quite harmless but there is always that little annoying piece of spyware that can infect your computer. The symptoms vary but the most common one is when using your internet browser, annoying little pop-us will appear. They are quite easy to notice cause they'll even appear on safe pages like Google. Now Spybot: Search & Destroy is a program that will scan your computer's registry (the registry is a Windows feature) and look against a database of known spyware. When the scan is finished then you can decide what to do but I always delete them. There's is also a immunize feature that works with Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox (as of yet is doesn't work with Google Chrome). This is help prevent spyware infecting your computer. I ran a dual spyware and virus scan every month just to be safe. You should try out this program, it may even just solve all your problems.
Zone Alarm
Windows XP service pack 2 and upwards comes packed with a firewall called Windows Firewall, to me this is only half a firewall as Windows Firewall only monitors incoming network traffic and ignores outgoing traffic. A firewall can be your best friend against hackers as Zone Alarm will warn you when someone or something is trying to access your computer (Not always a bad thing btw, your internet browser and BitTorrent applications are an example here). Not really much to say about the program, it's a firewall, firewalls can be very effective.
Core Temp
This is a great program, it's not really a utility program but it very helpful, It's a program that monitors your CPUs core temperature, depending on how many cores you have (Pentium Dual-Core & Core 2 Duo = 2, Quad Core & Core i7 = 4). If you play games on your computer then is a good monitor to see if your computer's processors are nearing danger temperature.
Eraser
Delete files is not what most people think. If you delete a file then it's no longer on your hard drive right? Well, wrong, it still remains on your hard drive. Windows uses a table file system called NTFS and the almost redundant FAT32 (exFAT ftw) which is like a massive table with the file information and where about on the hard drive it is located. Now this be a little complicated but when you delete let's say a music file, that file is removed from the table, and it looks to the user that the file is gone but the file is still on the hard drive, this how police can recover hard drives that have been formatted. Now what Eraser does is deletes the file from the table and at the same time it also moves files from the physical hard drive to overwrite the music files therefore it is deleted for real. If you never understood a word of that I just say that what the program does is securely delete your files.

Ever since I've been with my girlfriend and started College, I have seen myself as a computer geek for the facts that computing the the subject that I host most of my knowledge in and I could rip open a computer case and explain in details which each of the components are. Same thing goes for Windows, although I will admit I don't know everything about Windows but I found out about stuff through the good old fashioned means of trail and error or from my good friend Google. I'm proud of these things nevertheless but lately I've been noticing that my views on some parts of technology are not as geeky as I though. It all started when me and my friends are having a conversation over MSN about Terminator and if their will become a point in time where the Technology Singularity will happen. Just to point out if you don't what that is the short version is that it is a point in time where humans are no longer needed for the process of creating machines, look it up on Wikipedia if you wish. I've never been a fan of artificial intelligence to the extent they can think on their own with human programming. I really do think that would be the biggest mistake to Human Kind. I will admit that A.I has served a purpose with the automated phone calls that depend on voice identification but I fear if the this advances then Terminator will become reality which is quite shit cause I really enjoy donner kebabs. All I can really do is just wait and see what happens with this. Your free to disagree with me if you want as it's your opinion. Website update I suppose. I know I said I would have it up by September but I don't know if that's going to happen. It might I'll just have to see but for now I'll just post of content on the MySpace here. Maybe you'll noticed my Boni's Tech Tips that I started for the website to be truthful. The first episode is about Open Source Software and gives recommendations for you to try out.

Right now, their is at least a 40% chance that you are using open source software, if your running Firefox then you are indeed running open source software and even the engine used in Google Chrome is open source.
Open Source is basically software that has been created by a developer that also releases the source code to the public. Open source is free and bugs and flaws are found much faster than that of closed source software.
This week on Boni's Tech Tips I will give a list of popular Open Source software that can be used to replace current paid for software.
Mozilla Firefox
Mozilla Firefox is the second most popular browser on the marketplace and one of the best alternatives to Internet Explorer. There would have been a point in time last year when I would have urged you to switch from IE to Firefox but I must admit the IE8 is a pretty decent browser.
OpenOffice.Org
OpenOffice.Org is a great alternative to Microsoft Office. OpenOffice is developed by Sun and is closely integrated with Java. OpenOffice contains a word processor, spreadsheet, database, presentation application and a diagram application. The best thing about OpenOffice is that it is compatible with Office 2003 & Office 2007 formats.
Mozilla Thunderbird
The only thing that OpenOffice is missing is an E-mail client but thankfully the team that brought us Firefox also brought us Thunderbird. This is an E-mail client program that could replace Microsoft Outlook or Windows Mail. Mozilla Thunderbird is best if it is combined with the Lightening Add-on which integrates Sunbird Calender function. If you don't use POP3 & STMP you should give it a try. Google Mail has free POP3 functions as many others might too (Yahoo doesn't unless you pay for your account).
7-Zip
7-Zip is an application that is used to create archives and compress data. This would be a replacement for WinRAR or WinZip. It's a pretty good program as it can unpack .rar and .zip as well as many other types. It's primary packer is it's own .7z which can compress better than .rar at times but can be very ram hungry when set to Ultra setting.
SumatraPDF
PDF is a very popular format that is used on the internet for lots of things from manuals to application forms and the most popular PDF application is Adobe Acrobat Reader. I will admit that I used to like this program but it got to much of a resource hog and so I damned it to hell and moved to Foxit reader but later that became a fucking nightmare with all the ads and the update manager chaos. I then found SumatraPDF which does exactly what it says it does... read PDF files without stealing 100MB of my RAM. Good program, check it out.
GIMP
GIMP... GNU Image Manipulation Program... this is really a clone of Photoshop. It is a very good program and can basically do everything that photoshop can do more of less. Originally for Linux is was ported over to Windows.
Pidgin
Pidgin is a universal chat program and supports lots of different protocols including MSN. This is a good alternative to Windows Live Messenger. The user interface is different but it is really simple to use and a good little program. the portable version on PortableApps is pretty good to put on a flash drive and chat at work, college or school.
Audacity
Ah, now this is one of my favourite programs that I started using after switching from Adobe Audition. It's a multi-track recording application and can report from almost any port on your computer and then edit the track in several ways. I personally use this program to record my band's guitars. It's a great program, if you like recording stuff, give it a try.
InfraRecorder
I used to use Nero as my primary burning application but then it all change it became a home entertain meant package and so took about half a gigabyte just for a burning application. I then decided to ditch nero for InfraRecorder. It's an excellent program that can read and write CDs & DVDs [Blu-Ray soon too]. It can write ISO from a disk and the reverse too. I suggest you give this a try at least, it's only a 11MB install and it doesn't hog your computer resources.
There are many more Open Source applications out and about but these are a few my favourites. Have a look at SourceForge, this is an open source application hosting site. Everything on this website is open source. Their is also a few games out their. If you have time give SuperTux a try. It's a Super Mario clone with Tux the penguin
