Cookin' On 3 Burners - BAKED, BRROILED, & FRIED

8/10

When I first stuck Baked… in my player, I thought for a moment that I’d been sent a vintage Stax/Motown release by mistake, an effect I imagine the Cookin’ boys have spent meticulous effort pursuing, with an undeniably warm vinyl quality present throughout all 13 tracks here. As for the music itself, the tracks here manage to navigate a broad range of territory ranging from upbeat JBs-esque grooves and sensuous jazz-exotica, whilst deftly avoiding falling into the dreaded coffee-table-soundtrack trap. The aforementioned attribute is something that’s partially down to the mighty bass and drum grooves that power this collection, in a manner reminiscent of labelmate Rephrase’s recent excellent follow-up given a decidedly more live edge. It’s also equally a result of the deliberately rough edges kept in the mix, as an inspired live band reworking of Gorillaz’ Feel Good Inc illustrates. Extremely classy.

Baked Broiled & Fried is one of the strongest rootsy funk albums to ever come from Australia. The band’s ability to switch between Meters-esque funk head nodders, to more complicated Boogaloo and swing tempos sets them apart from the straight funk scene. Teaming up with vocalists Fallon Williams and Kylie Auldist, the band cast their net even further across the soul spectrum.

2007 sees Cookin' On 3 Burners at their most ambitious. With the worldwide release of their new album ..Baked, Broiled and Fried.. the band have included vocalists and look set to dominate the funk-soul spectrum once again. On this brand new single we find Fallon Williams (ex Humble Pie drummer!) laying down some tough vocals on "Cook It" whilst Melbourne's best kept secret Kylie Auldist gets deep on "Settle The Score".

Been waiting for a while for a new Cookin' on 3 Burners release, and they don't dissappoint. Still on the button and tighter than a mosquito's tweeter. Watch out Quantic Soul Orchestra, the Burners are back! Simon Hodge (Craig Charles Funk & Soul)

Following their hugely popular (and increasingly rare!) singles on Bamboo Shack, alongside the re-issue of 'Gravel Rash' on Freestyle last year, Melbournes funkiest trio step up once again with another straight up groover. Keb's Bucket. Comprising of members of Tru-Thoughts signing The Bamboos, the Cookin' On 3 Burners sound is a rawer, more stripped back style reminiscent of the late Jimmy Smith, Richard 'Groove' Holmes and Jimmy McGriff at their fiercest.

Review :
This is some heavy heavy monster piece of wax!! In the foosteps of their recent available vinyl releases in Europe - a fried 7 inch on Freestyle Records and a killer 12 inch on Knowfool Music -, Australian Hammond-Power-Funk group Cookin' On 3 Burners hit the dancefloor jackpot once again with a new 7 inch on Freestyle.
"Keb's Bucket" is indeed EXACTLY what over-polluted-with-electro-pop-clones clubs need today. Its undeniable back-to-basis approach to in-your-face raw funk is spiced up with modern sound structure action and athletic breaks, and would get all the laziest party-goers up and dancing. The b-side "Redback" is in a Quantic Soul Orchestra deep funk kind of vibe, with a cool call-and-response interplay between the Hammond and guitar, making this 45 and essential release for all funk DJs and collectors. Djouls

COOKIN' ON 3 BURNERS Keb's Bucket FSR7022 'Keb's Bucket' is an ode to a certain deep funk DJ's overflowing receptacle of...well - who knows what? Whatever he keeps in there it's creating a lot of steam as this track slashes the dancefloor with its strutting bass and hammond interplay spilling over the tight drums. Over on the flip 'Redback' provides more of the same but with a more laid back Grant Green sort of vibe. More essential funk for your trunk from Freestyle!'

Cookin’ On 3 Burners
Soul Messin’ [Freestyle]
Just when you thought that you’d heard it all before from an organ trio operating in classic late 60s soul jazz and funk mode – buzz saw syncopation on the drums, wildly scratched and picked guitar lines; sizzling, high pitched chords on the Hammond B-3 – here comes a combo from Australia who manage to take those influences and make some creative capital nonetheless. Firstly, they implement the model quite flawlessly, swaying between Jimmy Smith and the Meters as if to the manner born, in other words they’re both very effusive and pertly economical. Secondly, the presence of a smart horn section and two very good vocalists in Kylie Auldist and Falon Williams brings a touch more variety to the table. Thirdly, and perhaps most pleasingly, Cookin’ On 3 Burners know how to throw a curve ball when appropriate, namely a reprise of Gary Numan’s Cars – which is something you just don’t see coming. It’s a complete transformation of the original whose krankenhaus vocal isn’t missed one iota. All of which makes you wonder how much better pop can sound sans people who can’t sing. Or how much better pop can sound when played by good musicians.

COOKIN' ON 3 BURNERS - Soul Messin'

COOKIN' ON 3 BURNERS - Soul Messin'
COOKIN' ON 3 BURNERS
Cookin' On Three Burners are an Australian organ-led soul-funk trio. They comprise Jake Mason on organ, Ivan Khatchoyan on drums and Lance Ferguson on guitar. Ferguson – arguably the hardest working player in Australia (the Bamboos, Lanu and more besides) – has used his network to bring in some top brass players, a wonderful percussionist, fine backing singers and two exceptional lead singers to augment the trio's basic sound, so that this new 12 tracker takes the feel of the band's debut 'Baked, Broiled Or Fried' to another level altogether. That's not to say that they've totally eschewed the sparse soul-jazz trio sound. Far from it – there's plenty of that on offer. 'Four 'N' Twenty, for instance, is standard for that genre, 'Tokyo Saucer' offers more of the same (though the bass is more prominent) while 'Goose It Up' is loose and percussive. Even the trio's take on Gary Numan's electro hit 'Cars' works remarkably well. Of the other instrumentals 'Piranha' is as sharp as the title implies, 'Dog Wash' echoes the sparseness of New Orleans funk, the LP's title cut takes a leaf from the likes of 'Sock It To 'Em JB', while the slowie that is 'The Proving Grounds' harks back to 60s organ-led beat groups (think the Animals or Procul Harum). However, it's the big vocals that makes this collection so irresistible. First featured vocalist is Fallon Williams. He leads on 'Hole In My Pocket' – a sort of Dyke and the Blazers pastiche. His other contribution is 'Seen Through Your Disguise' and if someone told you it had been recorded in Muscle Shoals in 1969 rather than Melbourne in 2009, you'd believe them! That then leaves the two cuts featuring the seemingly ubiquitous Kylie Audlist. Her first is the insistent funk opener 'Push It Up' … sparse, tight and beefed up with great, punchy brass. Her second is the LP's best straight soul cut – indeed 'This Girl' is one on the best soul tunes you'll come across anywhere this year. It's mid-tempo and much gentler than the rest of the album and boasts a melody that's the catchiest of ear-worms and Kylie nails it perfectly. No wonder it's already being played out by the most discerning of soul radio spinners. It's the cherry on this tastiest of soul-jazz-funk confections.

CD (Item 489202) Freestyle (UK), 2009 -- Condition: New Copy

Nothing messy here -- as the Burners are tighter than ever, and bat this one out of the park with a massively funky groove! The core combo features organ, guitar, and drums -- with occasional horns added from time to time -- and most numbers here step off with a really badass instrumental groove that runs from mod 60s soul to gritty 70s funk, with a few jazzy riffs thrown into the mix from time to time, especially on the organ lines. Kylie Auldist brings in some deep soul vocals on two tracks -- and Falcon Williams sings on two more -- and the whole thing's got a lively, upbeat groove -- and an all-classic sound that's like finding a pile of rare funky 45s stashed away in the back of a dusty old shop. Titles include "Cars", "Goose It Up", "Piranha", "Seen Through Your Disguise", "Soul Messin", "The Proving Grounds", "Hole In My Pocket", "This Girl", "Dog Wash", "Tokyo Saucer", "Push It Up", and "Four N Twenty".  © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
