Bay indie label Dri-Clean Only proudly announces the release of solo
artist Luke Escombe’s debut CD “Golden Ages”, a collection of warm,
soulful tracks combining laidback grooves and exotic sounds with
evocative stories of love, re-incarnation and foreign adventure The
production was a collaboration between Luke and his father, a former
60's psychedelic rocker, who also played bass on many of the tracks. It
was recorded with local musicians in a converted dairy shed in the
hills of Byron Bay, and mixed at Rocking Horse Studios by veteran
producer Steve James. One of the tracks, “Byron Time" appears on the
recently released Homegrown Roots Volume 3, alongside new songs from
the likes of Mia Dyson, John Butler and Paul Kelly. Luke will be
launching “Golden Ages" at The Basement in Sydney on Wednesday,
September 10th, followed by shows in Los Angeles and the UK The launch
will feature a specially assembled 12-piece backing band: “The
Corporation”- a versatile group of musicians including award-winning
guitarist Aaron Flower, members of Sydney funk and roots bands The
Bakery and Extended Family and stunning acapella group Kaya. To listen to selected tracks from the new CD and for more information, visitwww.MySpace.com/LukeEscombe“Escombe
has a baritone voice worthy of a love-song dedication hour. Thankfully,
he's also got wit in spades and knows how to spin a good story. The
true mark of his talent is the smile you'll wear for one or two lines
amidst his most melancholic tune." [Brett Winterford, Sydney Morning
Herald]“He’s like a cross between Leonard Cohen and Jimi Hendrix…in the same body” [Jack Jones]

So many people ask us what Kaya means…well, here are a few meanings from languages all over the world…
If you have any further details or corrections for us, please write and tell us!
It was the name of a 6th century Korean kingdom. The name survives in the name of twelve-stringed instrument (kayagum) developed there.
In Japanese, it means summer night or the name of a type of Yew tree.
"Kaya" means enlightenment in the Rastafari dialect.
In the Hopi (American Indian) language, it means "elder little sister". Other Native Americans tribes say it means "wise one".
In Jamaican, kaya also refers to marijuana…the healing herb! And, we all know it is the title of a Bob Marley song and album.
In Sanskrit, Kaya is one of the words that refers to a body, or a form.
In Buddhism, it specifically refers to the three bodies in which beings manifest (trikaya). The Dharmakaya is the enlightened manifestation. The Sambogakaya is a step down from that and the Nirmanakaya is the manifest physical form.
On the coast of Kenya, the Miji Kenda people refer to their sacred forests as Kaya
In Indonesian it means prosperous
Kaya in Malay means mighty / wealth / great / power / rich.
Kaia is another way of spelling it which also means "Earth" (Apparently…anyone know any info to back this up?)
In Hawaiian it means sea.
In Turkish it means Rock
The Japanese name Kaya means - resting place
I also read somewhere that there is a Scandinavian meaning of 'Pure' (Anyone? Kristina? Why haven't you told me this already!)
It is a fairly unique name for girls (and dogs!) all around the world. We originally loved the name after a friends baby girl called Kaya. She was present at our first ever recording (a basic set up at The Gaf in Glebe, Sydney) before we even had a name to bind us all. Little Kaya lives in Canada and I haven't seen her since then!
Peace people, love to everyone called Kaya out there!

Jazz & Shiraz Festival Cronulla, Woodford Folk Festival 2007 & more
Self titled debut KAYA EP now available through MGM
KAYA's unique music draws on such influences as jazz, soul, blues, pop, folk and contemporary sound-scape with all band members from music/performing arts courses at UWS. Together, they create urban music that is both lyrically and melodically compelling - if not a little cheeky and sensuous as well. In concert, KAYA performs acapella in 4-part harmony and with instruments, with original songs including 'Don't want to go home', 'Lyin'' and 'You move me' in addition to innovative arrangements of songs by John Butler Trio, Joni Mitchell and Bob Marley.
Kaya recently supported Renee Geyer in Melbourne and Jimmy Cliff at State Theatre NSW. Regulars at The Vanguard, The Basement and The Clarendon, Kaya has just recorded their first single "Lyin'" with producer Steve Scanlon (Kate Ceberano, Tina Arena) for release late 2006, with intimate shows recently performed at The Hilton for Canteen and Gearins Hotel for Oxfam. Kaya will be on tour December 2006 and at Woodford Festival 2006.
NEW SINGLE 'LYIN' COMING SOON!
