Our official website  has full tour details of where the wild things are. Next up - sold out gigs in Perth at the Quarry amphitheatre will end our tour. Hope you could make it!

THE CHURCH / ASTREETLIGHTSONG
The Great Northern Hotel - Fri Nov 27

A legendary live venue, Byron Bay's Great Northern serves as a welcoming shelter from the marauding throngs of schoolies this Friday night. Unbothered by the alcohol-fuelled pandemonium outside, Sydney dream-popsters ASTREETLIGHTSONG treat us to songs from the well-received Ocean Floor EP and some punchier new material. Singer Craig leads the Depth Charge (also the set's best number) from behind his keyboard as the trio revisit the '80s with huge drums and melodic electric 12-string breaks - in short, all highly appropriate/

Catching The Church on the first night of their tour is a must-do for every convert, and this rabid fan abides again. Like earlier in the year, the cosmic four-piece open with Tantalized, "crazy Russian monk" look-sporting Marty Willson-Piper fervently hammering his Rickenbacker. The slow-burning Block and Day 5 continue the familiar sonic walk, which ignites again with the lightning, 12-string-propelled NSEW. From the praised latest album Untitled #23, Happenstance wraps the room in E-bow bliss while Forget Yourself's classical guitar-laced Theatre & Its Double gets its first live airing in five years. The surprise spot, however, is reserved for a triumphant cover of Smashing Pumpkins' Disarm, Steve Kilbey belting out the mantra-like lyrics with pathos unattained by Billy Corgan. We're then back in Untitled territory with Deadman's Hand and Pangaea, upon which Steve is presented with flowers. A cult Church staple from 1982, Psychedelic super jam You Took is blasted out in its full "paisley underground" glory, guitar guru Peter Koppes emitting shards of freestyle noise from his Fender; recent single Operetta has the Sydneysiders cool off a little before they end the main set with the perennial Under The Milky Way Tonight and the ever-serpentine Reptile.

The Blurred Crusade isn't over yet, though, and we get three encores including Space Saviour, Myrrh and the heart-tugging Hotel Womb. "It's a wonderful world," sings Steve, the words still ringing in our heads as we exit the Northern and cut through the Byron chaos. There's still nothing quite like seeing The Church. - DENIS SEMCHENKO

TIME OFF MAGAZINE

THE ZOO: 28.11.09
THE CHURCH, ASTREETLIGHTSONG

Sydney three-piece Astreetlightsong warm up The Zoo’s early crowd with ambient synth-driven rock. With singer/synth player Craig Wilson’s dominant synth and sonorous tenor the band swell into soundscapes textured by guitarist Sam Bright. Changing dynamics, drummer Ryno Madern lays down a stomping beat as Craig sequences his synth and joins on guitar for older song ‘The Lighthouse’. With Madern repeating an electro drum groove the band double synth and guitar during a more sparse number. After airing a new untitled song with a choppy guitar riff, the band follow with darkly lumbering new single ‘Remind Me’. Beginning another new track the band layer watery and squeezed digital synth with acoustic guitar. Maintaining the layered synth for their final number, the band change acoustic to electric 12-string guitar and close with an energetic song featuring jackhammer slides for the contemplative audience.

As ambient music begins The Church file onstage and slowly build into ‘Tantalized’, with guitarist Marty Wilson-Piper abruptly beginning the song’s frenetic choked-siren riff while singer/bassist Steve Kilbey shapes the song with enigmatic lyrics and galvanising vocals. Switching to the tense ‘Block’ the band is then joined by recurring keyboardist Craig Wilson. Following the shimmering ‘Day 5’ and ‘North, South, East and West’, Marty takes bass while Steve plays 12-string acoustic for new album cut ‘Happenstance’, while guitarist Peter Koppes combines slidework and e-bow. Switching back for ‘The Theatre And Its Double’ the band’s follow-up cover of The Smashing Pumpkins’ ‘Disarm’ prompts a crowd singalong. After the atmospheric ‘Month Of Sundays’ the band follow with newies the brooding ‘Deadman’s Hand’ and low key melodic ‘Pangaea’ with Spanish guitar-style leads from Koppes. With Kilbey questioning the crowd’s ability to withstand the heat the band cauterise the scabrous sentiment of ‘You Took’, with drummer Tim Powles charging his kit while the silent Koppes wrings notes from his hapless guitar. Settling down again, Kilbey ditches his bass as Wilson-Piper straps one on for the wistful sentiment of new single ‘Operetta’, with Koppes and Wilson-Piper singing backing vocals on the chorus. Keeping with the contemplative tone Wilson-Piper strums into radio favourite ‘Under The Milky Way’, getting instant approval from the crowd and a singalong while Koppes enters quietly before colouring the song with its distinctive e-bow break and outro. Kilbey’s opening hiss precedes Marty’s angular riff into ‘Reptile’, as the frontman sings the dispassionate lyrics to the song’s wailing guitar finish. Returning for two encores the band first play ‘Interlude’ and ‘Space Saviour’ then newie ‘On Angel St’, ‘Myrrh’ and the rarely played ‘Hotel Womb’. The band’s widespanning approach to their catalogue leaves a happy crowd who respond equally to older and newer material.

Inpress interviews Steve Kilbey ....

Hallowed ground Steve Kilbey from The Church chats with EJ Cartledge ....

Approaching 30 years of recording and performing, The Church show few signs of mellowing. If anything, the band is as prolific as ever and playing shows of great resonance and variety. Their latest album, Untitled #23, garnered almost career-high reviews, establishing yet again the credentials for what is becoming an extraordinary  body of work. Inpress caught up with lead singer and chief singer/songwriter Steve Kilbey on the eve of the band’s Melbourne show. As ever, he was expansive, candid and forthright.   ....

“It’s an affirmation for sure, and it’s always great to get a good review,” Kilbey says, when asked of the universally positive reaction to the new album. “But you can start looking the gift horse in the mouth and ask ‘why are we getting good reviews now? Is it that good a record, are we doing something different?’ You know, it’s going to be interesting for The Church to go into the studio and try to make another record like Untitled ‘cos we can’t put a finger on what it was that we just did. But you know if you try to please yourself, there are two motivations for that. One, it’s the easy and ordinary thing to do. The other is you’re like the Brian Jonestown Massacre and hey, let’s just please ourselves and who cares. If you’re trying to please a fat man in a suit, usually it goes wrong. And that applies especially for The Church. Not only do you not please the fat man you don’t please anyone else.” ....

There was a golden age for The Church in terms of commercial acceptance and one gets the feeling that Kilbey would welcome the opportunity to have this time over again. “We never did anything to please the suits per se,” he says, “but on Gold Afternoon Fix [the follow up to 1988’s world conquering Starfish] instead of just pleasing ourselves as  we’d done before and always did afterwards, we were writing with certain  parameters in mind…that it had to be a certain kind of music. I felt this enormous weight on my shoulders and I think how I responded was terrible, but perhaps understandable for anyone else who has been subjected to that pressure. I mean we were plucked out from this indie-cult thing and then given mainstream success and the system kind of clamps down on you and squeeze you into something rotten.  “Gold Afternoon Fix in hindsight is not a bad record, but The Church is not in the business of making ‘not bad’ records. It was like, at that moment in time, being in the ring with Cassius Clay and trying to land a ‘not bad’ punch! You need to king-hit him. We should have come out with a record for America and the world that was so unbelievable and weird and wild and all the things they were starting to dig about us. But what did we do? We turned around and conformed and played it safe.” ....

In an offhand and bemused manner, Kilbey acknowledges the cultural weight the band’s biggest hit Under The Milky Way has gathered since its release two decades ago. With the world at their feet, he admits they got it wrong and ‘that was it for The Church’.  Oddly, both critics and the band’s personnel agree that despite the misstep after Starfish, 1992’s Priest = Aura was an artistic triumph.   “Priest = Aura was too late,” says Kilbey. “I would just like to go back in time to 1990, release Priest = Aura and say this is what we did after Starfish. We may have lost some of our commercial appeal but we would have been a lot more effective and a lot more people would have heard us and not written us off. The other thing is that grunge came along at the very time that Priest = Aura was released. Nirvana had their ascension and it kind of cancelled us out. It’s funny, ‘cos I knew it at the time. I knew that as soon as we released that record it would be lost, but I believed it would have longevity. But we were in a tailspin by that stage anyway. Now it’s great to have a classic record up your sleeve nearly 20 years later but still not a lot of people have heard it. And after that we weirdly imploded.” And yet The Church has lingered on,  coughing and spluttering at times, to release some of the most seamless and  rich music of their career. Furthermore, Kilbey and comrades are revelling in every minute.....

What brought on the turnabout? “Well you know,” Kilbey says, “a total transformation is not a bad thing. I’m amused at the different versions of me over the years, from the skinny, angular, distant and bored character of the 1980s to the bloated junkie struggling through the 1990s and now I spring up after ten years of yoga and swimming to have all of this energy and turn into a crazy old hippie. Finally, after the heroin haze has lifted, I discovered that I really love to play music. I really enjoy going bananas onstage these days and when the audience enjoys that and can see the humour it makes it so worthwhile. Look, it just doesn’t matter anymore; I’ve paid my dues and no one can judge me harshly anymore. But certainly in the earlier days that manifesto of being distant and icy probably hemmed us in.”

Asked about his way of writing and recording, Kilbey laughs and launches into some background tidbits of his fellow Churchmen. “I have an incredibly informal approach to music,” he says, “whereas Peter [Koppes – guitar] is forever talking about crotchets of bars and stanzas and god knows what. As soon as he launches into that I lose interest. So sometimes we sweat and sometimes it goes really easily. Tim [Powles – drummer and producer] have worked out a modes operandi to deal with huge chunks of The Church that works very well for us. The band has an approach whereby we’ll record loads of stuff and then Tim and I – with Tim doing most of the hands on stuff – will trim it down and treat it, get the others to overdub on it if necessary, and that has worked for us over time. At times, that process can be a real joy; sometimes Tim and I get on such a winning streak, yet at other times we talk and bicker and nothing seems to happen and I go home angry and frustrated. So it really is a mixture of those two outcomes all the time.” © Inpress 2009

TIME OFF interview....

Time Off #1452 November 25 2009....

Holy longevity, Batman

Since their humble beginnings in Canberra's 1980s new wave scene, through line-up and direction changes, the church have managed to keep a captive audience for nearly 30 years. Singer-songwriter and bass guitarist Steve Kilbey chats to Mitch Knox about staying fresh three decades after being unleashed on the world.

If you've ever tried your hand at creative writing - in any format - you'll understand how hard it can
be to come up with consistently good ideas. So to look at a band like The Church, who have been steadily pumping out evocative and chameleonic music for the better part of thirty years, is to look at a band with a secret; some kind of sonic fountain of youth. Surely the proof is in the pudding: the band released their 23rd chronological release (and 20th full-length) earlier this year, Untitled #23, to widespread critical and audience acclaim, showing no signs of being an act old enough to have fathered some of you. But lead singer/bassist Steve Kilbey maintains they approached Untitled #23 like they do all their albums. After all, there's not really a secret - or if there is, he's not too sure what it is.
"We're never focused," he says. "We're never sitting there like one unit, going, 'Let's do this', and everyone going, 'Yeah'. It's pretty much, like, whatever's going on at the time; people going through their different individual musical phases. I don't know what the other guys are listening to; I don't know what kind of album they wanted to make. So I guess we just randomly apply our process of writing and we never know what we're going to come up with, and I guess we accidentally came up with this one this time, which people seem to like.

"I wish I knew what [our secret] was, so we could do it next time, because next time we're all going to be arguing about how to do it again, and first of all, no-one will be able to agree on how we did it, and no-one will even be able to agree to what we actually had done in the first place. I think when we finish a record everybody sees it differently."
What caught Kilbey off-guard about Untitled #23's release was not so much everyone in the band having different perceptions of the album, but rather that the audience saw it very differently to him.
"I'm a bit like a parent who wasn't that impressed with his child, and then the child went out into the world and did well and suddenly I was like, 'Yes, well, I always knew he'd be a good boy'," he says. "I am, seriously. I didn't have that high hopes for this album. I thought it was... I don't know. I don't know how I felt towards it; kind of a bit indifferent. Then, when it did kind of well, I changed my opinion. I had to.

"I thought we were banging against a wall and I thought it didn't really matter what we would do that people would kind of… for a long time now, we've been getting reviews that say, 'Oh yeah, another good album from The Church. Next!' You know? So I felt like, well, we've made another kind of good album, and people will say the same thing, and I was a bit resigned, I guess. I was kind of surprised when people noticed it."

But notice it people did, and it wasn't long until the band launched their So Love May Find Us Tour earlier this year - which included a trip through the United States and Canada - and now the band is returning to our shores to complete their tour.
"I think it's going to be pretty good," Kilbey admits. "Tickets are selling quite well in the cities, and Perth's already sold out - two nights in Perth - so I think it's going to be a good show. We have to figure out what we're going to play yet, but I think it's going to be good.
"[Expect] a lot more intensity than you probably think you're going to get. We've become very intense. We're really rockin' these days. We're really loud. We're quite brash. We're going to do a lot of songs off our new album, and we'll do a smattering of old and mid-period stuff."

To coincide with the tour, the band are unveiling three additional releases: a four-track EP, which boasts a near-50 minute runtime and was recorded during the Untitled #23 sessions, and two re-issues - a remastering of Shriek: Excerpts >From The Soundtrack, on which the band collaborated with American sci-fi author Jeff VanderMeer, and a reissue of Back With Two Beasts, an album originally released in 2005 in online digital format.
Says Kilbey of the EP's unusually long duration, "Yeah, I think there's a 36-minute long instrumental
track on it, that's why you'll find that enormous length.

"I didn't have 36 minutes spare to listen to it, so I don't know what it is. 36 minutes in a day, that's a big chunk of your day. That's like 1/48th of your whole day to hand over to listen to some bunch of geezers having a jam."
To hear one of Australia's music legends speak so derisively of himself is jarring, but Kilbey insists he and his bandmates are not over the hill yet.

"I think potentially we could go on and still make some very, very good records. Age shall not weary us the way it has wearied other bands," he says. "But what we have to fight off is that thing that hits middle-aged and elderly people, of sort of just going through the showbiz kind of motions, and The Church is really determined not to do that. Well, we haven't so far, and I'm kind of onto it. I'm onto it.

"And every time it creeps in, I try and do something about it. We can't help getting old, but we can help becoming that old, stupid thing, where we're like a parody… But obviously as institutions and individuals and even civilisations grow old, they tend to become corrupt or dry or they crumble or they can burn or they can become arrogant; it's hard to resist all these impulses and cheat the machine, kind of. At least I'm aware of the syndrome, and I will be battling it."
But at the end of it all, regardless of what lies ahead, Kilbey remains pretty thankful for all that's gone by.

"You know, I wish I was a few rungs further up the ladder. I wish I was richer and more successful, and younger, and had a nicer car, and all that," he says. "But on the other hand, I know a lot of geezers that started playing guitar at the same time as me, and now they've got really boring day jobs, and I get to stay at home and not do very much except make music.
"Whatever happens, I've kind of had a good run. I can't deny that. I have had a good run. For 30 years, I've eked a living out of showbiz. Even if it stopped tomorrow, and I had to go and get a job in the post office as one of my relatives recently suggested to me - said I'd be a good postie, and I thought, well, okay - I have made 30 years out of strumming a guitar. You can't be too bitter about that."
