Just to keep you guys up to speed.... I was able to recover all my data from the harddrive, and there is a slim chance that I'll be able to get our last recording back from the dead. In either case, I now have the following. -A working LaCie media drive. -All the old shows. -All my video work. It took about 72 hours, but I did it. The bastard LaCie drives will be replaced by a G-Tech RAID drive. I'm done assing around.

Last night, we recorded an amazing comeback show. It was Aggie, Tony and Myself, on a never ending barrage of hilarity. After we had finished recording, I said something along the lines of "now watch, this shit will crash before I can save it." I hate it when I'm right. You see, there is no way to save the recording while you're in the middle of it. In my setup, Audacity (our recording program) is getting all the data from the USB interface, and storing them in a temporary directory, with some crazy propriety organization. All the data that makes up the show lives in thousands of pieces, inside hidden folders on my media drive. At the end of recording, I save the project file (which organizes these thousands of chunks) and export an AIFF in case something happens to the project file. Last night, the iBook crashed in the midst of saving the show. Audacity panicked and quit, and my podcast/video media drive refused to be read. Even after a little while in the freezer, the drive would not mount on any of the four computers in the house. This means our glorious comeback show is lost to the ages, along with the past couple months worth of shit that I've made that I haven't backed up yet. I disassembled that harddrive, in hopes that it's just an issue with the power supply/firewire busses inside the casing. I plugged it into a sled, and it still didn't mount. I'm letting it run overnight with Data Rescue 2 in hopes that I'll be able to get most of my files back. Once I've saved the data, I'm going to zero out the drive and put it back to work until I can figure out a way to get something a little bit nicer. There is a tiny, tiny sliver of hope that I'll be able to recover this wonderful show, but I'd be very surprised to hear it again. In any case, we are not dead. Expect episode 38 before our one year anniversary (12/26). I swear, I want to get a show out to you people, but it's not easy. Thanks for your continued support, you won't be disappointed.

Things are always getting more complicated around here, and I just thought I'd fill you all in on recent goings-on. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to record in the last few days due to an oral injury. It's all healing up, and we'll be putting a new show up very soon. Sorry I haven't been able to keep up with the weekly thing. The next show is going to be fucking crazy. I don't know who will be on it, or what we'l talk bout, but I can assure it's quality. I've become the proud owner of a Core 2 Duo MacbookPro, with a built in webcam and stuff. That puts the total of computers involved in recording up to three! Powerbook will still run audio and email, iBook will still be burning info to harddisk, and MacbookPro will be kicking off it's career by streaming live audio and video as we record and edit. I'll let everybody know when we're recording, and hopefully a couple of you can catch us in all of our unedited gory. This will allow for better skype calls, live feedback (via chat), and more anger on my part if things aren't going 100% up to par. It'll be grand. Our live profile can be found at brianisinyou.net/live I'm also considering adding the live stream to the sidebar of our site, but it doesn't seem like Safari is a big fan of their code. There is some refinement to be done, but we're off to a good start. Don't forget to give us a call, or shoot us some email. Hopefully, you'll be seeing us soon.

I'm pleased to welcome the first member of the Brianisinyou Wall. Mr. Tony is our self-proclaimed number one fan, and has been supporting the show since day one. I recieved his photograph (and money) within minutes of launching the official Wall website. In case you're too lazy to click, The Wall project allows you to prominantly hang a photograph of yourself in the Brianisinyou studio. $2 gets you a 4x6, all the way up to $75 for a fucking poster. Check out the site for more details. This project was designed to help me pay for ever-mounting bandwidth costs, and to give us a constant reminder of just who's listening, every time we're in the studio. Check it out, and sign up today.

Just got back from Guitar Center. I'm lucky enough to have a hookup to get everything at cost for the next couple months. Check out my new "rack" (shit, I need a rack...) Going clockwise, you see my UB1204 FX-Pro mixer, my old, unused 802, my sexy new 266XL compressor/gate, and my soundcard. Here's a quick mp3 of me playing with the compressor, completely un-edited... click hereThe next show is going to be fun ;)

Just letting you guys know that despite the lack of shows, things are still going strong. Episode 29 is preproduced, and we're just waiting for our schedules to line up so we can make a recording this week. This one is going to be good.
I'm also just heading out the door to Guitar Center to buy more gear. Whenever production slows down, I just drop a couple hundred dollars and it inspires me.
ps... I'm taking a little weekend trip later this month. I can't talk about where, or why, but you guys are really going to enjoy the outcome.
Things are looking up.

The Review
A successful author I know grits his teeth and foams at the mouth when he hears the phrase everyone has a book in them. I suspect hosts of great podcasts feel the same way about the oft-repeated opinion that anyone can podcast. Brian Is In You, a panel-style talk show hosted by Brain and his friends, is evidence that even if everyone can, not everyone should. This show makes all the mistakes possible in podcasting without exhibiting any of the virtues that are achievable.
Theres no discernible format and little planned content. Instead of talking about the film he is in the middle of making, a subject I imagine to be full of amusing anecdotes, Brian rambles on about his hairy bum and equally uninteresting topics. Aside from a regular segment called Romantic Advice with Tony (a kind-of Dear Abbey for the 00s and the highlight of the show) time is spent rambling about material from prior episodes or giving confused accounts of dull incidents and, at least on episode 23, a repetitively tiresome argument between two panellists.
There are lots of in-jokes, references to previous episodes and general content that only long time listeners would understand and little effort is made to recap for new listeners.
For a show that relies heavily on voicemails, live calls and pre-recorded audio the sound quality is too variable. The difference in sound quality between panellists talking (which is good) and the other audio (which is not) is significant and annoying especially if youre listening on-the-move without easy access to a volume switch. When Skype doesnt work there is no point airing the unintelligible sounds that result just to prove someone called.
Brian claims to edit the show and my ears bleed at the thought of the awfulness of the stuff he removes if what he leaves in is considered worthy of the kilobytes.
The notion theres a range of different tastes in the world and each of them deserves to be catered for is what podcasting is about. However, this show doesnt have the planning, production values, marketing skills or comedic talents of other shows in the genre which genuinely cater to the same audience (eg Nobody Likes Onions or Red Bar Radio). All I wish for is an imminent case of podfading before some poor sod stumbles across this as their first podcast and is turned off the medium forever.
The Rating
Id rather have superglue poured in my ears than listen again. Dont waste the bandwidth. ---------
I'm guessing that people are going to click on her link to the site, out of morbid curiosity. Our reactions coming next week on ep. 28

I added a bunch of stuff to brianisinyou.net. Most notably, a lot of new pictures on the show pictures section, and an archive section, which will offically be launched (and the title will be fixed) by the 18th show. Speaking of the 18th show, I've got all my new equipment set up and ready to rock. I'm just waiting for some talent to come over, and foamies to be hung up. I'm leaving for e3 on the 8th of may, so hopefully I get two or three shows in the bag by then. I got another donation yesterday, and Jesse is in the Top 8 for a little while. There's still two spots left for a dollar apiece. Go to the site and click the donate button if you want in. I'll be putting up news here all the time, so be sure to subscribe. -bk
