 Last week a good friend, Dan Fox, aka LOSS to those in the music community...  ...literally lost everything he owned (as did his girlfriend) in an apartment building fire on Monday, May 19th. Luckily he and his girlfriend were not in their apartment as they were on vacation, and their cats were being looked after elsewhere, but all of their possessions, including all of Dan's gear for making Loss' incredible music, were destroyed. Even a couple bucks from a couple generous souls adds up, so if you're able to give a little please do. Even if you don't know Dan there's a good chance you probably know someone who does, so look at it as helping a friend of a friend or a great musician. TALVEKOIDIK "Silent Reflections" (Brume Records) Visionary soundtrack for experimental electronic poetry. Saying that the creative mind behind Talvekoidik is the same from the rhythmic noise project S.K.E.T. is absolutely a negligible detail. Talvekoidik is far from being a side project, it is a fresh expressive reality that flows from the same individuality and completes it with the same strength. Listening to "Silent Reflections" is like dreaming an inner film rich in airy shots and wide views that fills up with thrills and move to emotional tears. The continuous contrast between harmonic sensitiveness and the wonderful rhythmic work welcome the restless and shocking throbs of experimental industrial syncopation, it excites the epic pursuit among wind instruments, strings and piano within a magnificent superb explosion of timbric colors, crescendos, diminuendos and noisy emotional scenarios able to take your breath away. The cinematic strenght is soaked in digital sizzling mechanisms and sine waves that keep estranged from reality and expand in impressive classical symphonies, in the lyrical and ethnic romanticism of the lashing Nordic wind, as well as in the tribal silence of the desert wrapped in the refined lights of a dreamy metropolitan hi tech oasis. Three remixes (the one from 16PadNoiseTerrorist seems to be the funniest and most original) complete an unmissable debut.
And here follows a short interview with Talvekoidik
A: Your logo is the Möbius strip, a non orientable surface. This property could also be directly connected with your music. Can you please explain what is the relation between Talvekoidik and the Möbius strip?
T: The Moebius strip is very fascinating to me. It..s the only endless thing you can hold in your hands. It..s the only object with only one surface. Whenever you move forward on it, sooner or later you will end up on the point where you have started. This symbol is a reminder for me to stay focused while writing tracks for talvekoidik. It..s necessary to stay focused if you want to develope a track to its end, to perfection. I don..t like limits and i dont like compromises. But sometimes I am too lazy or demotivated to go a step further. The Möbius strip should motivate me to make a step forward in such situations.
A: The creative process implies a necessary abstraction from reality, a deep inner trip within one..s own self, which is particularly intense in your debut album. If S.K.E.T. is clearly involeved in political matters as far as the concept goes, Talvekoidik is more "poetic" and lyrical. Which dream/vision/imagery does Talvekoidik..s music come from?
T: Talvekoidik is a way for me to express things i cant explain with words. Its another language. I dont have a clear concept for the music, no rules, no formula. This music comes directly out of my mind and the sound depends on my emotional situation while I make music. Its not a forced process, there is no will behind it. I just let myself go. Things I see and feel are a big influence of course, as well as things I imagine. But its all driven by a yearning for living, for breath, for an enlightened mind, for the ease of being in contrast with reality.
A: Can you point 1 advantage and 1 disadvantage of being an electronic/idm project in 2007?
T: An advantage is definitively the freedom of creativity as it always happens in "new" cultural movements. There are masses of artists, very billiant minds, most of them with a unique shape of sound, people who like to be experimental. There is a lot of confidence in this school of sound and it is very interesting to discover this wideness of different approaches. This is also a very huge disadvantage (of course not for me) because the peripheral enviroment like magazines, promoters, booking agencies and labels do not like this fact. I think because it..s hard to calculate the profit they may make and so they wait until the risk is easy to calculate and the musical uniqueness is morphed into boredom by acts who cook always with the same recipe to satisfy the mass-market.
A: You have a great passion for architecture. What would be the perfect architect to describe Talvekoidik music in shapes and colors?
T: This is a good question! I don..t want to offend these architects with my statement. I don..t see myself on the same level of expertise as they are but projects of Zaha Hdid and Coop Himmelblau have always been a big inspiration for me. I adore their work but it is too huge and too brilliant to bring my music in a relation with their work.

"A very unusual name for a very unusual artist"
From the very first tracks I thought that the sound is familiar to me. And not simply familiart, but very familiar. The thing is that I give an album a first listen before reading all the materials that are sent in together with the album, all those cards and press-releases that give an idea of what the band is. Talvekoidik had something from S.K.E.T. – those complicated, but so balanced rhythmic structures that become not just an accompanement, a background for the tunes, but a part enjoying equal rights on an album. Indeed, I wasn’t surprise to find out after that Talvekoidik is a project of Kai from S.K.E.T., a band that already manages to gain authority and doesn’t need to be presented. Silent Reflections is Talvekoidik’s debut album, issued on a french label Brume Records that brought to the world releases of such bands as Flint Glass, Prospero, Empusae, Remain Silent, Oil 10 and many others. I think those bands mentioned have to give a reader a slight hint on what he or she is going to give a listen to.
Talvekoidik is an estonian word, meaning foggy, winter-like atmosphere. When I read the definition the first associations that come to my mind are "majestic", "scaled", "cold", "atmospheric". So are the tracks presented on the album. This effect is reached not only because of complicated, rich rhythm structures I’ve already mentioned consisting not only of the usual drums, but also noises of different volume and frequencies and percussions, but also due to neoclassical patterns’ presence. There you can hear strings of different kinds – cellos, violins, violas, and horns. All together drawing a breathtaking picturesque landscapes – vast fields, where wild wind sways tall grass or rocky mountains whose heads are covered with crystal snow, cliffs on the seaside on the background of grey skies. But whichever scenery it is there’s a constant feeling of wind presence, which makes all those landskapes look alive. I think this wind-feeling is created with the help of noises in rhythmic structures.
Another side of this album is its reference to different cultures. There’re so many influences you can hear: oriental ones are easily recognised on Sandstorm track, african percussion in Silent Reflections or The Cliff track, celtic feeling in Rough Baltic Shore and Goodbye of the Certainity . There’s also no boarders for time in Silent Reflections – track seem to be coming from different epochs: majestic Eismeer, The Cliff (that has a mood of an old legend being told, due to the horns used, I think) or Goodbye of the Certainity (this one somewhere in the middle made me think to Minotaurus of Fix8:Sed8), completely contemporary Such a Perfect Day or Power of Eclecticism. This album is truely very diverse and extremely rich in images that music creates.
There were other people taking part in creating this piece of art as well. One of the tracks, Eismeer, was remixed by other rhythmic industrial/power noise bands – Heimstatt Yipotash, which used 8 bit sounds in its remix and the band I got to know – 16pad Noiseterrorist, which made the track difficult to recognise: distorted tunes, as if you’re looking at an object through false mirror, rough beats. I really liked Atlas remix by the band called Fragment King, I think because of the contrast between rough, uncompromising rhythm and neoclassical patterns in the background. Apart from those three bands, the following people have to be mentioned: Elda di Matteo performed piano on tracks "Such a Perfect Day" and "The Cliff", Zonk’t did the mastering at Odd Studios and the booklet is designed by Mathieu Orioli. Actually a 3 panel Digisleeve became the last drop in the flow of positive information, coze designers managed to combine all the images and moods presented on this album: cold, grey, metal constructions outside and nature landscapes inside reflect internal filling – soundscapes - really well. This album is definitely going to get its deserved place among those enjoyed the most in my collection.

Für Talvekoidik zeichnet sich Kai Christian Hahnewald beim französischen Brume Label verantwortlich, u.a. von S.K.E.T. bekannt. Mustergültig verschmilzt er IDM, Electronica oder auch Industrial mit einer sorgfältig abgestimmten Menge an experimentellen Bestandteilen. Dazu gesellen sich Einflüsse aus keltischer, arabischer, skandinavischer, baltischer und afrikanischer Musiktradition. Die Chemie stimmt also beinah unter Idealbedingungen. Rough Baltic Shore zieht stark emotionsgeladen unausweichlich in seinen Bann. Ebenso effektiv sorgt die einprägsame Melodie von The Moebius Strip für erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit. Bei großartigen Werken wie diesem ist die Repeatfunktion Gold wert! Minimal mehr davon statt mehr vom erstgenannten. (4,5/5 sh)

Talvekoidik is the side-project of Kai, who is a founding member of S.K.E.T. SILENT REFLECTIONS is his first release as Talvekoidik (which is an Estonian word meaning a foggy, winter like atmosphere) and there Kai offerers to the lovers of the Ant Zen / Hands Productions sound a new mixture made of industrial, orchestral and break-beat intuitions. Influenced by Gridlock and Beefcake as well as Scandinavian, Baltic, Arabic and African musical traditions, Talvekoidik is capable of creating a convincing blend of industrial cinematic music. If we want to analyze his musical compositions, we can focus on three main elements: the rhythmic complex structure which is based on percussive sounds (not only drums) , the orchestrations (strings or piano are present on each track and they are the main thing that help raising the phatos) and the overall dark, almost melancholic, atmosphere. I really liked the first five tracks ("Eismeer" has great moments where industrial break-beat is well integrated with epic orchestral sounds) and generally all the tracks which have a good mixture of these elements. "Goodbye of the certainty" is one of the few ones that didn’t convince me, because it was too melancholic and relaxed and paragoned to the epic mayhem of the following one (the main title) it sounds a little weak. With the ten original titles you can also find three remixes ("Eismeer" by Heimstatt Yipotash and 16pad Noiseterrorist and "Atlas" by Fragment King) which are nice but don’t succeed into creating the same effect but if I have to tell which one I appreciated most, I’d go for the "Synthetic coldness" mix of "Eismeer" by 16pad Noiseterrorist. I pick up this one because it is true to the original version but it sounds like an analog lysergic version.

An interesting development within the modern electronica scene is that of a number of industrial artists taking a step back from harsh rhythmic noise to create a more mature sound, melding emotional neo-classical with complex IDM beats. Talvekoidik is a welcome addition to this steadily growing trend, being the thoroughly amicable German chap, Kai Christian Hahnewald, one half of Soviet cosmonautics-fixated rhythmic duo, S.K.E.T. While S.K.E.T. seem to have come onto the rhythmic industrial scene a little late in the day for some, and at times fail to satisfy me by relying too much on fast and relentless rhythms at the expense of memorable tunes, Talvekoidik is a much more interesting prospect for my tastes.
"Such A Perfect Day" is hopefully ironically titled, but is a very good tune, opening the album in a suitably stirring manner with deep strings and syncopated beats, enough tiny imperfections to maintain a more human quality. "Concealed Longings" follows quickly with a melancholic piano refrain giving way to more rich orchestral textures that create a wonderfully moving filmic feel. This feel is maybe taken slightly over the line on "Rough Baltic Shore," whose rustic charm initially sends me off course to Ireland, before the wind instruments place it way east to Japan, the nostalgic melody treading a fine line between moving and slightly twee. "Eismeer" then contrasts effectively with some harder glitchy breaks, and ups the intensity with a triumphant chord progression suggesting a heroic ride to victory, although the horses are in danger of tripping over some of the more awkward percussive elements.
"The Moebius Strip" has an elegant string quartet opening, joined by noisier chords, but the whistle sound appearing later has me thinking of some kind of television montage of Germany’s determined progression through the football World Cup, only to be knocked out of the quarter finals on penalties! "Sandstorm" is predictably a departure to the dusty Middle East, and very compelling it is, too, with a swirling lead over Arabic polyrhythms, while "Goodbye Of The Certainty" takes us back to colder northern lands and is one of the better fusions of powerful symphonics with crunchy electronics. The title track of course is not silent, but has a more atmospheric opening growing steadily to a crescendo of opulent violins. Then "Power Of Eclecticism" is a little too much upbeat drum’n’bass for my liking, albeit still with great orchestral sounds. The album closes with the mournful string lament of "The Cliff," possibly our hero about to dash himself on the rocks below after his adventures have reached a violent and bloody conclusion?
The remixes tagged on the end are a little unnecessary; Heimstatt Yipotash are quite good, Fragment King quite a mess, and 16pad Noiseterrorist not particularly noisy or terrifying, but definitely quirky and surprising. So overall this is a very good debut album and Talvekoidik should be a strong force on the scene for some years to come. Complaints are rather harsh but hopefully not unfair; the classical elements can be slightly too obvious or romantic in places, less so than the rhythmic parts are often a little too fast and slightly clumsy. But I’m sure that will all be sorted out for the next album, so in the meantime you could do a lot worse than to check out "Silent Reflections" for your fill of neo-classical electronica delights.

With Talvekoidik Kai makes warm atmospherical glitch electronica with influences from groups such as Gridlock and Beefcake merged with elements from world music taken from the musical traditions of the Baltic region, Africa and The Middle-East. The subtle rhythm patterns, breaks and crisping glitch sounds support the accessible melodies of synthesizer and piano, to which a Celtic undercurrent delivers an epic touch. Listen for instance to ’ Rough Baltic Shore ’ or ’The Cliff’. It is produced very intricately since the music is really seductively catchy, despite the industrial, breakbeats and IDM elements. At moments you will feel really moved by the music. Symphonic neo-classical parts and strings keep the balance perfectly intact, as is illustrated in ’Eismeer’ and ’Goodbye of the Certainty’. This album is of a high quality and therefore perfectly fits in the Brume label roster. The only disadvantage I think, are the industrial noise remixes by Heimstatt Yipotash, 16pad Noiseterrorist and Fragment King at the end of the recording which totally take down the effect of the album. These could have been left out, and then the grade would have been a point higher. Silent Reflections is very much recommended to fans of Gridlock, Beefcake or Displacer.

Kai) la da il digipack in cui è confezionato l..esordio: all..esterno un..immagine austera e moderna. Tecnica appunto. Dove i toni di grigio sfumano in un paesaggio che di naturale non ha più nulla. All..interno uno scorcio di Baltico. Il mare avvolto nell..erba. Il verde e l..azzurro che vira anche lui verso un grigio, ma questa volta un grigio naturale comune al paesaggio del Nord Europa. La musica di Talvekoidik è il tentativo di mettere insieme questi due elementi. Lo sforzo di coniugare la tecnica dell..idm alla sinfonia del piano (in alcuni casi di Elda Di Matteo) e di una struttura ambientale. Non più un monologo (a volte sterile) di electro spezzata, ma un dialogo tra le due componenti, quella post contemporanea e quella atavica, che ci si porta dentro da sempre. Non più solo il computer e le macchine create dall..uomo, ma anche tutto ciò che circonda l..uomo, che lo emoziona e lo fa riflettere, ciò che a volte lo lascia senza parole a pensare. La vastità di un orizzonte contro la perfezione di un battito.
La prima parte del cd è quella che più rappresenta questo incontro, quella in cui si va oltre al contatto per raggiungere il connubio, che sia silenzioso o maestoso, che sia epico o delicato il blocco, pressoché continuo, che parte con "Such A Perfect Day" e termina con "Eismeer" è ciò che più si apprezza di Talvekoidik. La citata "Eismeer" è anche il brano più ritmico dell..album e non è un caso che sia stato omaggiato con due remix. Dopo di che si scivola fino alla title track in una idm più canonica che perde l..afflato naturale, che manca di ariosità e si canonizza. Il finale dell..album riprende il discorso interrotto. L..impressione che si ha di "Silent Reflections" è di un lavoro discreto e di un progetto con una sua poetica interessante e coraggiosa, che ha frecce al suo arco e personalità da mettere in mostra, ma che almeno per ora non sempre riesce a mettere a fuoco del tutto l..obiettivo. Se il futuro avrà le radici nella parte iniziale di questo esordio per Talvekoidik si prospetta un lungo viaggio.

Projet d’un membre du combo S.K.E.T. signé chez Hands, Talvekoidik présente pour son premier album une electronica contrastée, fine et subtile qui puise ses influences auprès de diverses civilisations et de groupes dans la veine de Gridlock ou encore Beefcake. Délicatement rythmique, magnifiquement orchestré, Silent Reflections est une ode généreuse et ouverte sur le monde, fraîche et langoureuse, aérienne et enchanteresse. Les envolées expressives dévoilent un univers chaleureux que la pochette ne laissait entrevoir derrière son aspect urbain et grisâtre. La musique est intense et riche, parfois chargée, mais surtout en émotions, les nappes et mélodies étant souvent très en avant pour appuyer le propos. Quelques brisures rythmiques, de petites expérimentations, une accélération ça et là, un peu de distorsion pour aiguiser les sens, une instrumentation variée et d’excellents remixes en clôture (Heimstatt Ypotash, Fragment King et 16pad Noiseterrorist), se fondant à merveille à l’unité de cet album profond qui dès la première écoute conquiert ! Excellent.

Interesting first album by this solo project of one of the two members of the Hands rhythmic noise act Sket. Void of 4/4 distorted rhyhtm and not aimed at the dancefloor, "Silent Reflections" is a bombastic orchestral projects, in which the well flowing strings and horns are mixed with subdued breakbeats and electronica clicks. Somewhat of a beefed-up version of Flint Glass (who is releasing this album on his Brume label), Talvekoidik manages to combine strong melodies and pathos-ridden track without falling in the cheese. Definitely something to be noticed.
