80. Sonic Youth - Sister If you charted the evolution of Sonic Youth in terms of quality, this is basically the huge jump on the graph. Infinitely better than anything they've done before, Sister is a very refined, noisy and all around great album. Sonic Youth were masters of dissonance, never getting too annoyingly noisy, always managing to make it sound both noisy and melodic. There are so many classic tracks on this album like "Kotton Krown", "Tuff Gnarl" and "Catholic Block". The lyrics are also some of the coolest lyrics ever used on a rock album.
79. Konono No. 1 - Congotronics Before I heard this album, I didn't notice how little innovation was happening with new music in general. After the final abrupt likembe-pluck, I was reinvigorated! This was the most unique and different thing I'd heard in a very long time. Basically this band is a bunch of people from Congo who created their own instruments by rigging likembes (thumb pianos) to makeshift amps and carving microphones out of wood. Thus one of the most amazing sounds I've ever heard was created. Everyone needs to hear this. It will appeal to nearly everyone. No matter how much you hate world music, you will love this.
78. Ornette Coleman - The Shape of Jazz to Come I've been acquiring many jazz albums recently and so far this is among the best of them. This album is not constrained by any kind of limitations. Ornette Coleman refused to make boring jazz with this one. There's so much jazz that frankly is really boring to me and it was refreshing to hear this free-jazz album. The album is also surprisingly accessible. I didn't think it would be very enjoyable on first listen but I immediately liked every track. This is really great.
77. Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the Hands It's hard to determine why I like this album so much. All of the tracks sound really similar, it's basically just Devendra and his guitar. He really has a strange voice that sounds as if he didn't drink enough water. It's great how he can do so much with so little instrumentation though. All the elements of the music work together well to create a great environment... I don't get it. I love everything about this seemingly simple album. I kind of still don't know why though.
76. Thunderbirds Are Now! - Doctor, Lawyer, Indian Chief I have listened to this album an uncanny number of times, due to its incredibly short length and most of all the pure adrenaline rush it gives you. Stated simply, this album is a 20 minute-long musical seizure with a 2 minute intermission. The band obviously is bringing a sense of humor to the album with track names like "K.G.B. Phone Sexxx" and "Top Secret Upskirt Camera" but better yet it brings a kind of energy I rarely hear with the ultra-charismatic lead singer that sounds like a girl, the frantic drumming and the angular lead guitar. This album is just pure fun to listen to. I hate how they abandoned this amazing sound on their second album, the more critically-acclaimed and more boring Justamustache. Damn you Pitchfork you know you did this to them!
75. Black Dice - Broken Ear Record Ultimate video game soundtrack. Black Dice are on a HUGE roll and they prove it with their latest record. It has so many great albums and sounds that totally blow my mind. I wouldn't have known the first goose-like honking noises were from a tuba unless I'd read about it! I know that a lot of people are scared off by "noise" music but even if this is classified as such, it is really accessible. There are several pop songs that are actually really catchy and are fun to listen to while I'm playing Halo. If I had to predict what music from the future would sound like, I'd definitely point at this.
74. Dizzee Rascal - Boy In Da Corner Dizzee Rascal's thick accented rhymes are definitely much different than I've heard before, but the best part about this album are the amazing beats. Apparently he made them with just his iBook. It's hard to believe anyone could make such great beats by themselves on a computer, but whatever! This was one of the first rap albums I genuinely enjoyed to listen to, mainly due to Dizzee Rascal's insane skill at constructing these simple but also catchy beats.
73. The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I Undoubtedly drawing much influence from greats such as David Byrne and Mark Mothersbaugh, Travis Morrison is the true star of this record. The entire album overflows with his nervous, raw, excited energy exposed through his frantic singing and the just-too-fast drumming, the kind of nervousness that really makes this album both delightful and off-putting. Morrison obviously had a lot of great ideas going into this album. The album title puts it the best, as if Morrison was panicking uncontrollably throughout the recording process. Every track is great but the true standout is "You Are Invited," a minimal piece that repeats the same drum loop throughout then explodes at the end with one of the greatest musical and lyrical ends to a song I
72. The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike I can think of maybe two other albums that get me as excited and worked up as this. It would be a difficult task to find any other work of music that can be so exciting and joyful. How can you describe it? "These guys use samples and have this great singer that sounds like a cheerleader..." doesn't really cut it. Just listen to this now.
71. Steve Reich - Music For 18 Musicians Such an inspiring work of minimalism, each track is based around a single different chord. Most artists would not be able to make a composition so reliant on repetition like Steve Reich does and succeed. Although the rhythms change very little throughout the symphony, Steve Reich achieves something like transcendence and it doesn't have as much to do with the rhythms or the strange sounds the singers make with their mouths or the incredible motion of the entire piece but just with the entire thing as a whole and just sit back and close your eyes and listen>.

90. Talking Heads - Remain In Light More proof that Brian Eno is God of Pop. David Byrne nervous and sometimes frantic-sounding voice works well with the incredibly innovative music that accompanied it. Sometimes the music is funky, sometimes it is incredibly joyful, sometimes it makes you want to dance. I love pretty much everything about this album, except its extremely short length.
89. Castanets - Cathedral Way too overlooked by everyone except fans of Asthmatic Kitty. Apparently Raymond Raposa traveled the U.S. by Greyhound Bus since he was 15, resulting in this dark, awesome album. Lots of crazy instruments are used in this album, but mainly it is pretty folky, based around the acoustic guitar. This album really pulls you in. Definitely American.
88. Boredoms - Super Ae So exciting to listen to. Although it's split up into tracks, the album functions as a single musical statement that is incredible to hear. eYe's singing is particularly amazing, and when you hear his screaming getting cut into pieces with incomprehensible voices in the background, along with frantic drumming, not much can be said to be better. This sounds like a jam session recorded from another planet. Well, it's Japanese...
87. Deltron 3030 - Deltron 3030 I love concept rap albums, and this is one of the best. Dan The Automator as the Cantankerous Captain Aptos, Kid Koala Skiznod the Boy, and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien as Deltron Zero is the perfect group to make this kind of concept album. Amazing beats accompany Del's confident rapping about viruses, traveling through space and rap battles. This is really geeky, it is definitely influenced by Star Wars and The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy among other things and the lyrics and skits perfectly resemble a kind of galaxy consumed by corporate sponsorship. They nail it completely!
86. Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand So lo-fi but so good. Bob Pollard is truly a genius if he can churn out songs like this so easily. Under the very poor audio quality is a huge collection of great pop songs. Almost every track is instantly memorable, like "Echos Myron" with its catchy "Tower to the skies..." and the exciting "Hardcore UFOs", even though the guitar track fades in out due to some technical error. The absurd lyrics complement the music nicely, making this a must-have pop album.
85. Joy Division - Closer It's really interesting to listen how Joy Division changed from just another punk-rock band ("Warsaw") to finally get to Closer. The entire album has a really gloomy tone which I like a lot. The scary lyrics, synths and robotic-sounding drumming and most of all Ian Curtis' monotone vocals are all contributors to the really dark mood. One of the best albums produced by post-punk. It sounds creepy and melodramatic without getting cheesy.
84. The Samuel Jackson Five - Easily Misunderstood One of the newer additions to this list. No lyrics, but it doesn't really matter, Easily Misunderstood still creates a mood that ranges from angry to calm to panicky. Although the music is essentially just guitar, bass, and drums, there are so many great moments on this album. In "Charlie Foxtrot Queen", the loud wailing guitars suddenly lead to a guitar solo filled with bent notes, backed by a fast-paced bass line, and then suddenly stops. Things like this are the best. I love listening to this while snowboarding.
83. Excepter - KA One of the best albums of a scene that I think is one of the most interesting of right now. I'm referring to the bands of Brooklyn that make weird noisy but somehow really melodic music. Like Animal Collective and Black Dice. Sometimes it drones, sometimes there are noises that blow my mind completely and freak me out but it works. This is a really trippy album. But it still makes sense and it works. Don't know how humans made this.
82. Kraftwerk - Trans-Europe Express These guys influenced electronic music like no one else, and this is why. The album cover features each member neatly dressed with combed hair, each looking in a different direction but not at the camera. At first glance, the cover seems unremarkable, but something about it is really robotic and doesn't look right. This is just like the music. Dominated by electronic instruments and a eerily robotic singing voice, Trans-Europe Express is, in a sense, perfect. Every sound is carefully placed, every note that is sung is perfect. I think that's what makes this album so disturbing and great.
81. Annie - Anniemal Dear Brian, Oh man this is one of the best pop albums I've ever heard. Yeah, yeah, she never made it big in America like I said she would, but she's huge in Norway... The album is expertly produced by Richard X, and almost every track is an incredibly catchy pop song. I love "Me Plus One", "Heartbeat", "Chewing Gum" and pretty much every other track on here! It's unreal the strength of every track as if this were a greatest hits compilation. Nothing gets me more happy and excited than Anniemal. Thank you so much for this CD!
