THE HOOCHIE COOCHIE BAND.
Think of Hoochie Coochie men and you think of Howlin Wolf or maybe Muddy Waters, but The Hoochie Coochie Band is fronted by local charismatic Blues singer Mojo Morgan. The band has had many line up changes over the years, but Mr Chilli on Bass has been there from the start, with guitarist Vince and Drummer AJ joining much later.
The Haverfordwest based band play a blend of authentic blues and rock overlaid with some of their own original idea's and their sound has been described as Cleddau Delta Blues. The four musicians have combined to emerge as one of the most exciting Alternative Rock / Blues Funk bands in the country and their Professionalism, Showmanship and musical abilities provide an exhilarating musical experience.
The band members have gained a lot of experience over the years with Mojo playing Bass for various bands over a thirty year period before fronting a number of bands, including a memorable gig with Digger Davies ex Edgar Broughton Band, called the Sratch Band.
Mr Chilli played abroad for a few years accompanying ex Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor and AJ Drummer played for several years with Kevin Rollins before Dexy's, and Vince completed his musical apprenticeships with many bands throughout the UK for many years.
Catch the band at Newquay Football Club on 16th May and if you want to book the band tel. Mojo. 07969-327-502. or email hoochiecoochie52@aol.com

Mojo's music is coloured by the blues

BEING a good blues man is not about where you happened to have been born.

"Feeling the blues" is about feeling the music, and destitute or not, you either have it or you don't.

Coventry has been blessed with some great blues men such as Tim James, Joe Beale, John Warwick, John Alderson and the great Mojo Morgan.

Mojo Morgan was born in Gulson Road Hospital, in 1952. As a young man his chosen instrument was to be the bass guitar. He joined the popular 80s ska band EMF.

"The blues gives me a feeling, which no other music can," reveals Mojo. "When I was a kid, I was listening to Robert Johnson, Bessie Smith, Muddy Waters, then all the 60s blues from the UK such as Alexis Corner, John Mayall, and the Electric Blues, that came out at that time. As I grew, so did my love of music."

EMF supported the likes of The Specials, Bad Manners, The Beat, and the Bodysnatchers.

"Even in EMF, a ska band, I was doing a lot of blues riffs," said Mojo. "We played all over the country, we just had a great time. But after 2½ years I had itchy feet to get back to my blues roots and I formed a band with John Alderson called the Travelling Riverside Blues Band, and my bass playing took on a different meaning when playing with such a great musician as John."

The Travelling Riverside Blues Band was formed in 1980 by Mojo and blues guitarist extraordinaire John Alderson. They played their blues heavy, and built up a huge reputation on the circuit.

"We played all the universities around Britain, supporting Paul Jones Blues Band, Dr Feelgood, Tony Mcphee's Band, Chicken Shack, and many more," said Mojo. "I also played in a drunken rock 'n' roll band called Sammy Earthquake and the Volcanoes with Roddy Byers from The Specials, and a good time was had by all."

By 1996 Mojo had moved to Pembrokeshire, and formed the The Hoochie Coochie Band four years later. From then on Mojo took his love for blues music to another level.

I said in my introduction that you don't have to have been born in Southern USA to play great blues. Go to www.myspace.com/mojomorgan and listen to just how well Mojo and the boys have nailed it.

Band members have come and gone, and today's line-up looks like this: Mojo Morgan, vocals;= Davey Jones, guitar and vocals; = Mr Chilli, bass and vocals; = AJ., drums and vocals.

The band now boast a more rocky blues sound, and make sure that every one of their audiences goes home happy in the knowledge that the band gave 100 per cent. Their set-list includes not just blues standards, but many self-penned compositions - more evidence that this is a band who like to push things a little further than they have to.

"The Hoochie Coochie Band is all about having fun with the music and the audience," says Mojo, "while raising money for good causes, just like any true band should be."

I asked Mojo if he ever came back to his native Coventry?

"I would love to come and visit old mates like Roddy Byers, cause we go way back before The Specials were born. I do get a lot of friends I still see come down to Pembrokeshire for a holiday, like John Alderson and Jim Allen, the sax player from EMF. I do keep in touch on the net with a lot of people."

So what does the blues mean to Mojo? "Blues music has been a passion in my life since I can't remember when! So, I believe it has always been there. I always found joy in singing. It gives me inner peace and takes me to another place. Hard to compare with any other feeling."

PopTrivia - MOJO MORGAN

* THE TRAVELLING RIVERSIDE BLUES BAND took their name from the Robert Johnson song - a song that was 'looted' by the likes of rock giants Cream and Led Zeppelin.

* THE Hoochie Coochie Band take their name from another famous blues song, The Hoochie Coochie Man written by Muddy Waters and Willie Dixon.

Mojo morgan & the hoochie coochie band had thier audience captivated, jim taylor got up with them and played  the harmonica (what a talented guy).     Two  words spring  to mind to describe the sounds i heard "SEXY" & "ELECTRIFYING" , this was going to be a night to remember. jim taylor then got up to play armed only with guitar and harmonica, an may i say did it so well, by this time the mood had been mellowed beautifuly and with great timeing , then when i thought it could get no better, Mojo himself took his guitar and played solo, WOW,was i in heaven. Press and Emails.  MOJO MORGAN'S HOOCHIE COOCHIE BAND

BLUES HIGHWAY ....... Thanks to everyone who made it to the club on Saturday evening for the Hoochie Coochie Band double set. It was a pleasure to see audience and band alike enjoying themselves to the extent where we had people on the floor bopping. If I had to pick out a highlight it would be their rendition of the classic The Hoochie Coochie Man. I didn't think it was possible to better the original but for my money they did. The guys remarked at the end of the first set that it was a treat to play for such a knowledgeable and appreciative audience, pat yourselves on the back.

Pembrokes Western Telegraph --Mojo Morgan's Hoochie Coochie Band -- Fishguard Arms,
Haverfordwest.
It is often overlooked that pubs as
music venues are the live blood and thriving bedrock of the local music
community.On arriving at Fishgurd Arms
to sample some Cleddau Delta blues,
The Hoochie Coochie Band,in unplugged mode, struk up with Dog On Heat, the first
of many self-penned numbers by charismatic frontman Mojo Morgan.
The band's first set was mellow with reflective blues, sometimes tentative, sometimes strident,as the songs took off on their own journeys-but one of them was called Train Girl after all.Even the front man was different in this unplugged setting-he was seated, playing guitar, his signature shades were nowhere to be seen and his trademark ponytail had been replaced by a cropped more sprightly looking coiffure. But normal Hoochie Coochie service was soon resumed as lead guitarist Simon informed us,in his introduction to the song they are named after, that there is a long lineage of hoochie coochie men from Muddy Waters and Howlin'Wolf to Pembrokeshire's Mojo Morgan.
With guitar and stool put aside and shades finally donned, the magnetic persona was firmly in place for there second set, which saw the band on firmer and more familiar territory, with a carbon copy of The Hoochie Coochie's main set,but played acoustically.
Mojo's voice hits the spot when he howls and growls tantalisingly as on his timeless rendition of Help Me,as well as other steaming classics such as Parchment Farm,St James Infirmary and Stormy Monday.
And all the while aided and abetted by the rest of the Hoochie Coochie's.

John from Tenby.
When the music started you guys
just blew me away! so much energy!...definitely best band
in South West Wales!"The band went on stage at 9.30pm did an acoustic set then fueled with passion
and energy proceeded to 'rock the joint' with vibes that warrant 9.9 on the richter scale.
All songs in their first set were locked together without pause, Only after one of their own numbers " Black Woman Blues " did the band take a three minute break while the audience roared with applause
as they caught their breath.

Mojo Morgan's Hoochie Coochie Band.
Look out for our appearance in early 2006 on Granada Television's "Life Roulette" - we somehow managed to become the subject of a dodgy reality television swap program due to be aired at peak time on ITV in January, friends of ours Craig & Kiran were traded in for a billionaire and his missus,

THE COOL HOOCHIE COOCHIE MAN ............................. All I can say is that this is an exceptional band and they give it everything from start to finish with a brilliant mix of music. I am not sure if it was 3 or 4 encores now, but they were top notch right up to the time that they pulled the plugs and said goodnight. Great show boys..........Fishguard Arms,Haverfordwest.

NIK WINTERTON, BASS PLAYER WITH THE HOOCHIE COOCHIE BAND. thought for the day-how about putting that good black voice of yours onto some Robert Johnson or Willie Dixon numbers...?

The Hoochie Coochie Band are a regular feature on Pembrokeshires pub circuit, have supported R & B legends, Dr. Feelgood and traded blows with Pembrokeshires Justice Done in the Face-Off at the Queens Hal, Narberth.THE BLUES are coming to Tenbys De Valence. A night full of rhythm and a lot of soul. The Hoochie Coochie Band came into existence in the last year of the previous millennium headed by Tony Mojo Morgan after his local success with the Mojo Roadshow.

Digger Davies Phoned me up from near Amroth in Pembrokeshire, and asked me to do a gig with him doing support for a friend of his from Germany. I was quite supprised that he wanted for me to sing with him, and he said he saw me singing with my band at Pembroke Festival in the summer. I felt quite honoured.
