IKE REILLY PLANS PODCAST SERIES TO ACCOMPANY NEW ALBUM
“Where’s My Godd*mn Medicine?” To Give Fans A Glimpse Into Reilly’s World
Appearances Planned At Improv Olympic Chicago in October and November
Ike Reilly, indie rock raconteur and singer-songwriter, whose new album, “Hard Luck Stories,” will be available via digital download portals on November 23, 2009, has planned a special weekly podcast series. As a lead-up to the release of the album, Reilly will be hosting “Where’s my Godd*mn Medicine?,” which will be available for free download beginning October 26th on Reilly’s website: www.ikereilly.net <http://www.ikereilly.net/> . “Where’s My Godd*mn Medicine?” will preview many of the tracks from “Hard Luck Stories,” but, more importantly, it will give listeners a glimpse into Reilly’s chaotic and interesting life by introducing, as Reilly says, “friends, enemies, bankers, drug dealers, real estate agents, cheerleaders, high school students, teachers and coaches, family members, offspring, and all the other f*cking freeloaders that live with me.” Broadcast each week from the outskirts of Libertyville, Illinois, near the Des Plaines River Valley basin, “Where’s My Godd*mn Medicine?” is hilarious, cool and showcases Reilly’s songs, stories, and fiercely-independent nature (that may, or may not, ruin him).
Prior to the album release, Reilly will be appearing on November 9th at the Improv Olympic “Armando Diaz Experience” as the “monologist” for the evening. The cast will then improv off of Reilly’s stories/songs for the show. “Armando Diaz Experience” is iO’s longest-running show and a landmark of comedy in Chicago. Reilly will also be visiting the Improv Olympic Theater every Wednesday through November 18th as part of the “TJ and Dave” show, where he will be kicking off each show by performing several tunes and telling stories. Long-form improv masters TJ and Dave have been using Reilly’s music to open their weekly shows for a long time.
To celebrate the release of “Hard Luck Stories,” Reilly and his band also plan to perform their annual Thanksgiving Eve Show November 25th at First Avenue in Minneapolis and at Lincoln Hall in Chicago on December 11th. Reilly plans to hit the road more widely in the early spring of 2010 to bring his “Hard Luck Stories” to fans in the live setting.

Ike Reilly's Annual Thanksgiving Eve Concert and Fundraiser
Wednesday, Nov. 26, First Avenue, Minneapolis, MN
For seven years, Ike Reilly has served up a legendary — well, pretty darn swell — gig at First Avenue that has served as a rollicking holiday appetizer for locals and folks returning to the Twin Cities for Thanksgiving. In the spirit of that next day, Ike has decided that this year, all funds from the big event will go to charitable ends. Ike is working with RS Eden, the longtime provider of treatment and housing for thousands of recovering people in Minneapolis, to raise funds for Takashi Yoshino, one of Eden House's most talented counselors and a father of six who is battling cancer.
"I love this gig, always have, and wanted to do more than just have a great night," Ike said. "Eden House has played a big role in the city, including helping out friends of mine, and I thought it would be a great partner for the event."
On the night before Turkey Day, Ike – and some very special guests – will be joined by Little Man, a Minneapolis trio that rocks large for its size, and scary-wonderful The Alarmists with doors at 7:30 and an 8:30 show time. Tickets -- $12 advance, $15 at the door – are on sale for a dose of Ike's rocking story-telling, a sound that has left critics hugging themselves since he first picked up a guitar. Funny and ferocious, Ike's songs render the American experience in all of its conflicted, melodic glory and his live sets have a reputation for hard-fought excellence and off-the-hook fun. And on Nov. 26, he's not only playing for keeps, but a very good cause.
"By stepping up in support of Takashi, Ike and his Minneapolis fans, along with First Avenue, are helping look after one of our most talented, intuitive counselors, a huge asset in our community," said Dan Cain, director of RS Eden. First Avenue has donated the venue for the event and all proceeds from the event will go directly to the Yoshino family.(People who want to participate, but cannot attend can send donations to: Thanksalot: A Fund for the Takashi Yoshino Family, 2923 Oakland Ave, Mpls., MN 55407)
Takashi, or Tak as his pals call him, was recently diagnosed with tongue cancer. Tak is a former heroin addict who has used his instincts, training, and humor to help hundreds of addicted people right out of prison or off the street for the past 19 years. His friends and colleagues have high hopes for his recovery, but in the mean time, he could use a little of the love and attention he has so freely bestowed on others. Tak has six kids under 11 – he sort of switched hobbies when he sobered up – and had to give up his second job to receive cancer treatment. Money is tight, needs are significant, and that's where "Thanksalot" comes in.

Songwriter Ike Reilly tells PopMatters 20 Questions about firm abs and buttocks and the best sitcom, ever. by PopMatters Staff Ike Reilly, who has headed up his band The Ike Reilly Assassination for the past several years, is back in stores now with a collection of b-sides and unreleased tracks under his own name entitled Poison the Hit Parade. In 2007, PopMatters called Reilly "the best songwriter in America" and his album We Belong to the Staggering Evening was dubbed "straight-up killer. Hilarious, unsettling, raw… but mostly just rocking… Not just a best-of-year record, but maybe an all-timer."
1. The latest book or movie that made you cry? I'm not sure if it was the movie or the book… I was reading The Norman Fell Story while watching Just Friends. Just Friends is a romantic comedy starring this fat guy that loses quite a bit of weight. I believe his dramatic transformation may have touched me.
2. The fictional character most like you? Blanche Dubois or Joe Buck. I'm like a scorned woman and a male prostitute.
3. The greatest album, ever? Cat Stevens' Tea for The Tillerman or Catch Bull at Four, although not for a specific reason. At any given time, any album could be "the best." There are just too many good records to comment on.
4. Star Trek or Star Wars? Star Search. I have no interest in science fiction.
5. Your ideal brain food? Codfish and rickshaw beans. Oh, for my brain: any art that deals with the conflict between man and machine.
6. You're proud of this accomplishment, but why? I once walked all the way to the state line to see about raising money for public awareness of public policy procedures that were not being followed and could ultimately cause cancer if left unchecked. After the walk, the girls from the Lake County Haven and I felt really wonderful, we went to a spa and drank nice wine.
7. You want to be remembered for...? Giving back to the world community, especially down the stretch. I'm not comfortable discussing my volunteer work, but it is more than considerable, bordering on saintly.
8. Of those who've come before, the most inspirational are? Matt Foley, Woody Allen, Fatty Arbuckle and Eli Whitney.
9. The creative masterpiece you wish bore your signature? Three's Company.
10. Your hidden talents...? Songwriting. I have lots of people working on keeping that talent hidden.
11. The best piece of advice you actually followed? Say 'yes' quickly when someone tries to buy you dinner or a drink or a gambling device. Don't sleep much, but if you have to, find a place where you can really let it all hang out.
12. The best thing you ever bought, stole, or borrowed? I bought a slot machine that takes quarters and returns nickels. It's called the Screaming Injun. I bought it but I didn't name it. I do love the term "firewater", however.
13. You feel best in Armani or Levis or...? I feel best in burlap and when I mean best I mean better than any other human on earth. I could leap to the clouds in my burlap kilt.
14. Your dinner guest at the Ritz would be? I eat there a couple of times a week and I have generously let most of my guests buy me dinner. It makes them feel better about themselves. My guest would be Three's Company actress Joyce DeWitt or Amanda Bynes (Big Fat Liar). You know, attractive women with suitable means.
15. Time travel: where, when and why? I would travel back to Saturday night at Bennigan's. Some slick hipster clipped a $20 from me. I left it on the bar and went to play Golden Tee. I'd like to go back and catch him doing it and give'm a donkey punch.
16. Stress management: hit man, spa vacation or Prozac? I'm a huge advocate of prescription medication. I recently took too much Oxycodone and had an incredible fit of the sweats! I was a dinner guest of my sister's and we were dining at the Ritz in Chicago. She asked the waiter to get me a face towel. I sweat so much that now my sister calls me "Puddles".
17. Essential to life: coffee, vodka, cigarettes, chocolate, or...? Vodka and Vodka. Routinely ordered as the V & V.
18. Environ of choice: city or country, and where on the map? On the side of the map. The country part where the city ends and the strip mall slams into the polo grounds.
19. What do you want to say to the leader of your country? "Here, hold this a minute and keep your eye on that woodpecker up in that maple tree. Don't move till I come back or until that feathered friend quiets down."
20. Last but certainly not least, what are you working on, now? Mostly my abs and core… some buttocks work.

Ike Reilly’s new album isn’t really new at all, although the music is new, at least as it’s being presented here. The two discs comprise a CD that includes five demos and alternate versions of old album tracks, a half-dozen song initially intended for, but not included on past albums, and a pair of previously unreleased numbers, alongside a second disc, a DVD containing three videos. The demos/alternates are a fascinating group, with three — "Hip Hop Thighs 16," "Duty Free," and "Cash Is King" all brighter and more upbeat than the ones Reilly utilized on album. In contrast, "Fish Plant Rebellion" is much more downtempo and stripped back musically, while "It’s Alright to Die" is totally transformed, far removed from the rockin’ R&B track that featured on Sparkle in the Finish. All are worth hearing, but fans will be far more interested in the batch of never-before released in any form songs. The anthemic "Dragonflies" is the standout of the batch, with its upbeat message, Rolling Stone-ish style, and Phil Spector-esque production, although the title track "Poison the Hit Parade" is nearly as good. That’s an aggressive song that lyrically brings chaos to a local college, and tips a hat to R&B even as it burns down the Jam’s "Funeral Pyre." "Janie Doesn’t Lie" sounds even more dangerous, with Reilly re-creating the fuzz guitars and edginess of the Velvet Underground. The other numbers give way to the artist’s twist on folk, with "Lust Song 78" crackling with electricity and "New Assassination Blues" bristling with a punk-y punch. Incidentally, the C&W-styled "The Train Bomber" with its ambiguous lyrics was actually written about Reilly’s young and, like most small boys, extremely destructive son. Only once or twice will fans understand why any of these numbers didn’t make it onto disc, but will be grateful that now they all have. A superb set that captures Reilly’s many moods and musical adventures.

Ike Reilly, the leader of Chicago-based band The Ike Reilly Assassination, will be back with a vengeance on April 8th with the release of his latest album, "Poison The Hit Parade." The record is a collection of songs taken from demos from his brilliant debut, "Salesmen and Racists," and alternate versions of songs from the blistering "Sparkle In The Finish" and 2007's "We Belong To The Staggering Evening," as well as the previously unreleased title track and the massive and poignant cancer anthem, "Dragonflies."
"Poison" showcases Reilly and his bandmate Ed Tinley as producers unencumbered by the major label system and willing to frame a song in any vibe needed to hold the melodies and tales of Reilly's unique vision. Beginning with the title track, "Poison The Hit Parade" continues Reilly's prolific assault with images of characters in a conflicted middle America: patriotic doubt, the celebration of life and death, high school girls in summer dresses and more theoretical assassination attempts.
His longtime band, The Assassination, is present on several of the tracks here, but many other fine musicians can be heard on these recordings made in Chicago, Los Angeles, Denver, New York City, Jamaica and Ireland.
In typical fashion, press praise for Reilly's previous release, "We Belong To The Staggering Evening," was copious and glowing. To wit:
- "Ike Reilly is probably the best songwriter in America… this new one is just a straight-up killer. Hilarious, unsettling, raw… but mostly just rocking… Awesome record by an awesome songwriter… Not just a best-of-year record, but maybe an all-timer." – PopMatters.com
- "…rock-legend cocky…packed with insanely catchy, air-punching anthems of American nomadism… [Reilly] gets funnier and prouder the harder life smacks him…" – Blender
- "…one of the most throat-grabbing surprises of the year. …[Reilly is] Philip Marlowe in rock form, his words tumbling out as melodic beat poetry…" – No Depression
- "...an infectious blend of electric blues, acoustic folk and no-frills rock 'n' roll. ... Reilly drawls, snarls, and croons through a dozen winning tracks here..." - Harp
- "…["We Belong To The Staggering Evening"] features some of Reilly's sharpest and wittiest songs yet. The record gets its title from a line of what may go down as one of the year's best singles…" – Esquire.com
- "An eloquent wiseguy whose songs evoke Bob Dylan and Paul Westerberg, Mr. Reilly... has the kind of high-energy, hook-heavy folk-rock sound that turns every head in a bar…"-- New York Times
- "…never less than original, this ferociously intelligent artist/band is always worth listening to." – USA Today.com
