I will resume the Dictaphonia Microcassette Compilation Project on February 1, 2010. At that time you can send to me a 5-minute recording on a microcassette, of any sounds, in any style that you want. I will make an announcement at that time and I will tell you my postal address. In the early 1980s I was one of the people who helped to start the homemade music movement. We released our music on standard-size audio cassettes because we could afford to make our music that way. At that time there were no compact discs or Internet music. And most of us could not afford to release our music on vinyl records. Cassettes became an art form with their own special qualities. Many cassette artists made very personal releases with homemade packaging and artwork for the tapes. Dictaphonia is a response to those old days of the Cassette. People still like cassettes because they seem real and like a living creature. Dictaphonia is also a comment on Internet Music. I like Internet Music but I also like physical objects to contain my music. So, with Dictaphonia I use the tiny microcassettes because they sound unique. Very compressed sound, limited dynamic range, mono sound - but they sound very direct and organic. Microcassette also has sound that is decayed. It sounds like an old creature that has lived, that has a history, in a future past that never existed. The Dictaphonia tapes come packaged inside a folded piece of paper that has black and white photocopy collage art from odd photographs and advertisements and street trash, inside a ziplock plastic bag that is usually used for sandwiches and food items. I want Dictaphonia to comment on how music art noise can be close to real daily life. Best regards, Hal McGee

Hal McGee, no-input mixer feedback loop, Moog MF-107 FreqBox and Behringer UB802 mixer, at Action Research show #46, at The Laboratory, Gainesville, Florida, USA, Saturday, December 12, 2009. This is a microcassette recording I made of the performance on a Panasonic RR-930 desktop transcriber. I wanted to incorporate the sound of the space into the performance. I set up my gear and performed at a table near the front of The Laboratory, where I had been collecting admission money from the show attendees. My performance was intentionally unannounced, and most of the audience members did not even know I had started performing until the first loud sound I made, and then the ambient sound in the room changed noticeably. Also view a YouTube video on that same web page or on my MySpace profile, filmed by Christopher Miller, which captures well much of the atmosphere of the performance.

idea... CHEAP AND PLASTIC, a POSSIBLE compilation of homemade experimental and noise works created with Casio and Yamaha keyboards, and other cheapo electronic consumer gadgets and toys, circuit bent or not. How many of you would be interested in participating? The compilation(s) would be released on cassette. It's just an idea for now. I want to find out how much interest there is before I develop the idea further.
