Dark, slightly sinister and yet oddly uplifting. The much acclaimed purveyors of Nottingham Darkwave have produced an intriguing second full-length release that lives up to their engaging live shows, with the depth to envelop you for its 42 minute duration. From the decadent melancholy of 'The Walls Keep Talking' to the echoey mists of 'You Don't Have To Tell Me', the discordant sonic mess of 'Symptoms' and the sheer power of the record's title track, this album shows off The Kull's multi-faceted musical and emotional range in a collection of songs which fill your ears with their intricate soundscapes.
The sounds created on this album will enthral and intrigue; snatches of whispers, lo-fi vocals hidden deep within the music and the electronic elements that are barely audible combine to form their uniquely complex noise. Andrew Shipley's vocals float over every track like a spectre, whilst guitars and synths create and interwoven melodic mesh that moves from discordant to cleanliness to unearthly and menacing, all on top of constant, driving bass.
You will get something from this record with each listen, and it will grow on you slowly but tenaciously after its initial impact. An excellently constructed, executed and produced album that is sure to bring The Kull the recognition they deserve.

'Stress' is a biological term which refers to the consequences of the failure of a human or animal to respond appropriately to emotional or physical threats to the organism, whether actual or imagined. It includes a state of alarm and adrenaline production, short-term resistance as a coping mechanism, and exhaustion. Common stress symptoms include irritability, muscular tension, inability to concentrate and a variety of physical reactions, such as headaches and elevated heart rate. Supposedly, there are many ways in which we can alleviate stress and its symptoms. Some try yoga, shopping, reading, cooking, walking, a good chin-wag over coffee with someone whose problems make your own seem trivial or by getting so absolutely out of your fucking mind with fellow dependents that your working week turns in to a test to see if you can make it to Thursday afternoon without bursting it to tears. So, as a result, I would like to suggest an alternative. On Friday 21st August The Kull, along with some of the brightest musical expressionists we have to offer, will be holding a situation designed to help you identify the cause of your stress with the use of expression, loud music, sonics and visuals. This will then reach to the core of your stomach and pull out the emotion which causes your stress and use this collective energy to rationalize you feelings helping you see clearer. So the new album 'amongst the Trees' is finally in our hands! Almost...
We got the masters back yesterday and its all very exciting, so we've posted 4 brand new tracks up on the Myspace. You wont have heard these before unless you have seen us play live over the last few months or so, so nows your chance!
We haven't got a release date yet as we're waiting to speak with a couple of our favorite labels to see if they want to join us, so watch this space.
Don't forget to come and see us play live over the next few months. More dates will be added soon so you shouldn't have to stray too far from your front door step. Keep your eyes on the Myspace for details.
Thanks to everyone who has helped us out so far and all those who have put us on and come to our gigs. We've met some good people and played with some great bands.
Richard Warren and Ric Peet deserve a special mention as without them this record wouldn't be anywhere near as special as it has turned out. We couldn't have dreamt of a better team to work with.
Hope everyone likes the new stuff. See you at the Rescue Rooms on the 25th of August!
The Kull xx
