Looking back at the last decades record reviews within the MM
towers archive, there don’t seem to be that many artists from Barrow
featured within these virtual pages. One exception has been Fallen
Leaves, who made the trip down from Cumbria and into the heart of
Lancashire for a few rounds at the Winelight Club in neighbouring Bury.
Step forward therefore Rosie Hillman and Matt kessell, the very
core of Fallen Leaves who have now set up shop as a duo under the
moniker of April Maybe May. The story behind it also declares that they
bumped into a punk band called Fallen Leaves and so the name change had
one final reason to happen. They’ve done this in some style, with an
album’s worth of folky melodics and semi-acoustic jingles. You’ll be as
likely to find a banjo somewhere, as well as the odd loop or the well
timed mouse click on a laptop programme.
Matt Kassell does an
impeccable job of creating the multi-layered keys and providing the
various elements of guitar (he also takes up the vocals on the more
upbeat swing of “The Girl Next Door”) . Rosie Hillman provides both a
sultry, ice cool vocal style as well as a warm, emotive parade of
welcoming melodies, switching between styles and all that lies in
between as it suits. I once described Fallen Leaves as the sound of the
countryside. I think this album holds this idea almost equally well.
Whilst there may be a hint of the odd jazz club, or the occasional
heart rousing folk outlook, this really is the sound of peace and
quiet. There’s nothing unassuming about this record, yet it is so
gentle and glides along with little effort.
The band will be out on tour with a full band so watch out for news of dates from their web site.

The guys at Sound on Sound magazine have reviewed our 'Sunshine' EP. We're very happy with the review (from the March 2009 issue) as these guys know what they are talking about and are very demanding. Have a read and see for yourself: Sunshine Fallen Leaves Fallen Leaves’ demo has, alas, been languishing on the Playback shelf for nearly a year, so by the time you read this, they may well have secured their twin ambitions of finding a rhythm section and a recording contract. Alternatively, they may have realised that recording contracts are just so 20th-century, and that the modern way is to stick it on iTunes and hope for the best. Or perhaps they’ve chucked in the music lark to study for their GNVQs in golf course management. I hope they haven’t, because their five-track demo is really rather good. In the absence of a real drummer, they’ve made sensitive use of samples, and the software-based electric pianos and Mellotron strings are likewise more than adequate. At the heart of things is Rosie Hillman’s breathy, gentle voice, which has been kept right at the front of the mix where it belongs. The band’s soft, warm, occasionally jazz-inflected music floats out of the speakers like meringues on custard. If Radox sold music, it would sound like this. Sam Inglis

hey - you can see a review of last night's gig in Bury here:
FALLEN LEAVES are one of Barrow's best exports except of course apart from their ships. Here they once again craft fine songs using an acoustic and electric guitar, plus some delays and a loop station. The female vocals and often dueted harmonies are effective. Fallen leaves carefully sculpture their own landscapes and captivating atmospherics, evoking the romance of remote lakes rather than sound tracking stuffy urban apartments

Hello there. Just wanted to tell you about our really excellent afternoon yesterday. We went to Greengate Junior School in Barrow (that's where Rosie went as a nipper) to play some songs for the 3 Year 6 classes there.

The kids have been doing a topic on local artists, musicians and writers so we were invited in as part of it. It was a huge pleasure to sing and play for the children - we learned Help by the Beatles especially, which they loved, and we also played some of our own stuff. They were brilliant at singing along and we're thinking of trying to squeeze them on a recording somewhere! We also had a Q&A session, where the kids asked some brilliant questions. Then we had juice and biscuits before we had to leave. We just want to thank the pupils for being such a good audience, and to the teachers, especially Mrs Hillman for inviting us in. Class 6H made some posters for us too which are BRILLIANT! You can see a few below, but we've posted a full gallery on our photo pages if you wanna have a look! THANKS GREENGATE! Love Rosie and Matt x x
