Last time we were in LA, we recorded a Hot Tub session for Hunnypot. (Sadly, no actual hot tubs were involved...).

Have a listen to these lazy, champagne fueled tunes here >

Whilst on our latest UK tour we had the distinct pleasure of spending our last day there hanging out (and watching the Wimbledon final) with our pal Mike Rea and his family.   In addition to being a widely syndicated writer, label owner, and all around gentleman, he and his family live in a converted chapel about an hour outside London.  Its rad beyond belief.  He usually does house shows there, but this time we just shot a few quick videos.  This is us, 11 am, about to leave for the airport...

Don't Believe Me: I'm adding the pedal steel to this Sean McArdle track. From Northern Charms.
My Mona Lisa: The Sketches.  From the album Secret Alphabets.  I'm playing my Chandler RH-2 lap steel.

Broken Sticks
Roofwalkers.  Recorded live in one take - straight to tape - at Silver Sonia  studios, produced by TJ Lipple.  I did the lap steel (the Chandler), suggested a chord change, and got a writing credit.

Dear Friends/Family/Loved Ones/Etc.

As this year winds to a close, I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone who was a part of this year in music.  156 shows around the US and Europe.  5 records (that I remember) in the bag...some of which will even come out at some point!.   Adding Pedal Steel to my arsenal.

My bandmates and fellow musicians:
Who not only put up with the amount of gear that I carry around - but occasionally even help load in/out!  My musical soulmates, who teach me grace under pressure, the value of good planning, and that "rehearsal starts at 6:30" actually means "we'll be there at 7:30".   In no particular order:   "its a lap steel."  "GLAASGOW!"  Drinking wine on a Ferry. "huh, what huh huh? huh?"  Arrested Development in the van. "Could I get less of you in my life monitor?"  Camping out in Florida.  "its a pedal steel". Portland to Portland - 13 days.  Wrecking Ball.  "Where's Robby?"  Tuscon.  Krista the GPS.  22 hours in the car.  "if i die of food poisoning, will you write a song about me?" "We're going to get thrown off the train."  Arguments about George Harrison.  "What time is our next transfer?"  The Justy-Horse.  Learning to play the flute.  "Please leave me behind".  "Just leave me here".  "Come back and get me next time."  Did someone get the bass?  "Our arch nemeis..." Rental Volvos.  Van Licking.  "Its okay, it was only a birthday present". Federal Reserve at Iota.   Tonenburg.  Singing Chickens.  "What key is this in?"  Mark, you still owe me a bottle of Whiskey.

My friends:
Who are all too smart and successful to be in bands.  Who do a far better job of having balance in their lives than I will ever do.  Who never see me anymore unless they pay a cover or have a floor for me (and 2 - 5 other unshaven, unbathed musicians) to crash on.  Who put up with phone calls/text messages at all hours of the night.  Who know my schedule better than I do.  Who have encourage me to keep doing this when I want to give up and call it a day.  Who are, in a word, rad.

My family:
Who don't seem to mind large groups of musicians frequently showing up, eating their food, drinking their booze, and keeping them up until dawn.  Who have bought every record i've ever been on - even in the early days when the music might be described as "terrible".  Who can fake being impressed when we open for a band they've never heard of.  Who still somehow seem to think that its kind of cool that one of their sons is "in a band".

Much love to each and every one of you - thank you all for everything this year, and here's looking forward to an even more spectacular 2008...

xoxoxo,
Tom

Me, age 6.  Probably thinking "I wonder what I did with those drink tickets?" and "Could I get more me in my monitor?"
