Time to open the book on the Canadian tour now that I have closed the book on the trip. This was an entirely great time - 12 shows over 2 weeks in 12 different places. Tons of fantastic people, tons of great artists and tons of crazy experiences. Let's see what I can tell you...

Sunday the 5th: I woke up around 4:30 A.M. and scramble off to LAX. My time at customs goes swimmingly and I pick up my first rental and drive into Toronto. I eventually arrive at Wavelength, knowing absolutely no one, but any feelings of loneliness go away quick as the Wavelength crew plus the other acts are all fun and affable people. I drink a bit with The Guest Bedroom and chat about alterna-weekly semantics. The Airfields lay down some lovable pop and I start my tour with a pretty raging set. New-ish track Safety First really happens for the first time - especially the ending - and immediately becomes pretty much a staple of my sets. The crowd is fantastic and fun. The Guest Bedroom follow me and proceed to really tear it up. Super duper.

I spend a bit of time relaxing before heading off to the Maritimes. Halifax is one of my favorite places in the world and I'm thrilled to arrive. Hostess-with-the-mostest Jess Whyte accomodates me fantastically, as always, and I get to experience the town a bit more this time than I have in past trips. Windom Earle (smaller version) and Mark Black and I head up to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island for a pair of shows. The all-ages one is a good warm-up, if a bit rough for some of us - however, Phil (A/V) really tears it up on the middle of the floor.

Also, Mark Black's set seems to possibly go over the heads of the all-ages crowd, but is notable for the sheer awesome-ness of his images projected on a gigantic screen.

We regroup, eat some kickin' vegetarian noodles and whatnot and move on the the late show, this at a bar called Baba's. Mark's set falls on more appreciating ears and seems to boost his confidence back to where it should be - his stuff is great. Windom Earle tears it up again - their Kelly Clarkson cover is a smash. A/V brings his new-wave madness strongly and the BoT set is nothing if not well-performed. Dino Dino track Killing Machine gets dusted off and feels great - it is kicked into "regular" status on the spot.

Back in Halifax the next day for, I guess, my 3rd 'annual' show in town. The crowd starts pouring in - the place is packed. Mark Black and I team up again for some serious partner drinking.

It was great to have another one-man act around all weekend and especially someone as rad as Mark. We chat baseball, match drinks and have fun times for the duration of my stay out east. The sound is a little rough in Halifax, but the crowd is really great...after a ten song set, I'm told I didn't play nearly long enough. No slacking, apparently.

Off to Fredericton, New Brunswick, where we meet back up with Phil and gang up for one last-show of this mini-run. Amanda of Windom Earle had joined back up the night before, and Jess came with us on this trip, so we were rolling seven deep. We hit some pretty slamming Mexican food and Mark and I venture into some pretty unforgiving margaritas. Phil brings his own sound system and that makes the show memorable. Mark throws down another great set as does Windom Earle. I don't manage to get a good picture of Windom Earle, unfortunately, but, just for fun, here's Jess being silly:

And her beau, Stephan, who is a great guy and did a great job as de facto driver and trip manager.

Happy to have stellar sound, I stick to a pretty safe setlist of hits and new jams. I actually really tightened the setlists on this trip, seeing as these aren't really places I get to often. Minor changes every night, of course, but not my drastically varying sets of old at all. This also halps the songs get really strong, and I feel like the set here is no exception.

The A/V set that night is probably the best of the 4 I've seen him do - his impromptu "Lunar Real Estate" rap (in the sense of banter, not hip-hop) really elevates the vibe and the room seems to love it. Awesome.

The next day, our little posse says goodbyes as Jess attempts to get a picture of the rest of us jumping. We never pull it off.

All in all, this 3 day run is one of the most fun - and musically solid - trips of my career.

I then fly to Montreal, where I don't take any pictures, but I do have a great time and a great show. Tons of dancing kids, tons of friendly faces, great times all around. Fellow Alien8 traveler Lynne T of the fantastic Lesbians on Ecstacy throws down some fantastic DJ'ing and lots of fun is had. The BoT set here is a huge dance party, inspiring some extended dance versions of my tracks.

Off to Toronto, where I gang up with fantastic stand-up comic Nick Flanagan. Our first show is cancelled due to a sad case of Carpal Tunnel knocking Orthrelm off their tour,
then our second show - in Kingston - gets cancelled thanks to flaky support acts. Thanks guys - we really didn't want our guarantee that night...Anyway, T.O. impressario Eric Warner manages to find us an apartment in Waterloo that we can do our thing at. Everything works out fantastically and this turns out to be a really good time. I keep my set short, considering I'm busting out of a PA in a third story apartment after 11PM, but it turns out pretty nice. Right away, it is obvious that Nick is a real master at he does with a real love for doing it. I enjoy his set greatly every time and remain convinced that the future holds big things for him. He's also just a rad guy.

I almost don't want to talk about the next show in Peterborough, though there are some really nice kids there requesting some left-field stuff, so I oblige them and dust off some unusual stuff. Here's Nick:

Nick's friend Marco joins us for Peterborough and Ottawa, helps with driving and is an all-around great guy.

The Ottawa show goes decently - locals Daiquiri are big fun and great guys. Former Subverseco contributor Jeph Wacehski (aka Zug Island) shows up - I hadn't seen him since Toronto 2002. And I take pictures of Canadian parliamentary buildings.

We head to London - most notable for the insane St. Patrick's Day festivities occurring as we kill time en route to Brantford. We give in and have Stellas at a crazy bar named Diesel. Insane!

Brantford is next - I've written about it briefly here - The Ford Plant kids are super friendly, the mood/spirit is just right - I'm excited to be here. Hailing from Toronto and playing with us were Ninja High School, a fun group with fantastic energy. They eventually join me for an impromptu late-night dance set of Books on Tape beats with Ninja High School shouting cover lyrics on top - "Institutionalized" (Suicidal) and "Add It Up" (V Femmes) among them. Nick tears it up yet again. He kills every time and manages to keep his stuff fresh - he clearly thinks on the fly and twists things differently from night to night. It is really fantastic.

Pictures from the BoT/NHS collab set as well as the rest of the show (not taken by me) exist here

Meanwhile - I forgot to bring the camera to Hamilton - brilliant - but the show was fun. Stop Die Resuscitate and Nick join me on stage for Safety First's jam-out ending, and the tour ends on a fun note. If I am being brief about it, this is because my back hurts and I'm hungry. So maybe I'll fill in some details on the last few shows later. For now, it is good to be home and I'm going to take advantage of those comforts. I had a fantastic time, though.

THANKS CANADA!
