The Nocebo Effect: What to Do When Science Fails
by John Dewey Allee

Greetings, Shadow Dwellers.

When I did a talk entitled "Proving the Existence of Magic" some thought I was being irrational. They really did not like the fact that I took a broad swipe at dogmatic atheists. Well, hold on to your nads because I'm now going to kick them in the groin:

Frankly, I have nothing against atheists as long as they're non-religious. Atheists become dogmatic when they begin to contain their views inside a little box labeled "finite temporal ideology" and then declare anything outside that box to be "delusional."

Let us define our terms:

finite = having bounds or limits
temporal = focused on present day beliefs concerning life and the nature of the universe
ideology = the body of doctrine, myth, belief, etc., that guides an individual or social movement

Does any of this sound like rational inquiry or free thought? Of course not. And it has even less to do with science.

Science is always changing. New discoveries are happening every day. And when long held beliefs are no longer viable, they are tossed in the ash can of history. Therefore, you would not want to build a religion around science, because you would find yourself in the same predicament as the creationist Christian, eventually having to eat your own words.

Nietzsche once wrote: Be careful when you fight the monsters, lest you become one. That's what I see militant atheists doing. Once they've won their battle against religion, there will be a new tyrant on the block. Mark my words, it is going to happen.

There is another problem: the new materialist prostitutes science like a pimp, strictly for personal and financial gain.

Many years ago, tobacco companies hired scientists to prove cigarette smoking is harmless. They did the reverse of what science is supposed to achieve. Instead of starting with a hypothesis and data and deriving from that a conclusion, they started with a conclusion, then selected data in order to build a hypothesis.

And so, we have a problem for today's atheist. In our brave new world, where people are motivated by greed, even shit can be peddled for truth. Those who worship science are indirectly worshiping those who fund the experiments. This is not to say progress is not being made -- of course it's being made -- but that's often motivated by greed as well. It's like the evangelical preacher who distorts the true meaning of the bible in order to extort money from the faithful or the soothsayer who promises to reunite you with your dead husband if you'll simply "cross her palm with silver."

And so we come back to the title of our discussion, "The Nocebo Effect: What to Do When Science Fails." The truth is, science has not failed us. It is we who have failed to live up to all science has to offer. And here is something I know to be a fact:

Subjective bias disguised as "healthy skepticism" is injurious to the scientific process. I would like you all to remember that. Furthermore, it is a double edged sword because it also limits human potential.

A very strange incident happened back in 1980, when I went to visit an insane asylum to see a friend. There was a psychotic there who was convinced he was Jesus Christ. He told me he could read my mind with perfect clarity and he knew that I was skeptical. I decided to test his paranormal ability and said, "I am thinking of a number from one to ten. Can you tell me what it is?" He said, "three." He was correct. I concluded it was indeed a coincidence, so I chose another number. He got that one right. This continued eight more times until he finally missed one.

I was astonished and decided to keep tabs on this man and follow his progress for the next few years. The doctors administered anti-psychotic medication to improve his condition. The next time I met him, he had quieted down quite a bit. He no longer thought he was the Messiah and he no longer believed he could read minds. I brought a deck of Zener cards used in labs to test psychic ability. We sat across from one another at a table and I proceeded to concentrate on one of the five possible designs - all he had to do is pick the right one. Out of twenty tries. He only got one right.

Now, why do you think this man failed my second test? There is a particular reason. When you figure it out, you will have the key to accomplish any goal you want. Change your belief system and you can change your life.

Thank you for listening,

Rev. John D. Allee

Evidence Proving the Existence of Magic

Before we embark upon our journey, there are a few things I'd like to clarify concerning labels and affiliations.

Someone asked me recently if I was a LaVeyan Satanist. The facts are, I did join the Church of Satan back in 1970. The term "LaVeyan Satanist" is actually a misnomer. The correct term is "Modern Satanist." And while the basic principles of the Church of Satan remain today, I find most members locked in a defensive dogmatic atheist posture. They refuse to believe in "magic" because of its supernatural connotations - they fear being lumped together with Muslims and Christians. MY argument is that people will often use words like "magic" and "science" as metaphors. The time has come to
re-examine the use and abuse of these labels.

Take for example this Christian who quoted his bible to me, "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee. ” (Deuteronomy 18:10-12).

And so I turned to this Christian and said, "So wizards and witches are all damned to hell. That's peculiar since the most famous wizard and enchanter in history was a guy named Jesus Christ. Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he raise the dead, walk on water, multiply loaves of bread, drive demons out of people and throw a curse on a fig tree? I suppose God is like one of those hypocritical parents who tell their children to do as I say and not as I do." "Oh no," says the Christian. "That's not it at all! You see, those were miracles Christ performed, not magic!"

So, here's the deal. The next time you go to rob a bank and you're caught with the stolen money, just switch labels. Tell the judge you are not a thief - you are simply a customer trying to make a withdrawal. If it worked for Jesus, it can work for you!

On the flip side, I met a dogmatic atheist who was so extreme, he didn't trust or believe in anything. Not God, not theoretical physics, science or philosophy, not even love. So, I thought I'd test him to see how limited and narrow minded he really was.  So, I said, "Hey atheist! Ever watch those science fiction programs? Do you think that someday we will master the forces of gravity and have people living on the moon? Can you see humanity turning the laser into a deadly weapon? What about teleportation? Well, the atheist shot back at me, "There you go again. Living in your delusional, fantasy world of magic, with faeries, elves and pink unicorns." "But wait a minute," I interjected. "Scientists are experimenting with anti-gravity and laser weaponry right now with impressive results! You don't think anything will come of it?" "You are seriously delusional" said the atheist.

Well, I've given this matter great thought and it occurred to me that magic is something considered supernatural until it is rediscovered by science - then it is labeled something else. Here's an example:

As far back the eighteenth century, people relied on their physicians to make them feel better when they got ill. However, in those days, they didn't have the wide array of prescription drugs we use today. Often, there was nothing more they could do. When people begged for help, doctors would resort to giving them sugar pills with no medicinal value whatsoever. Of course, the patient believed these pills had healing properties.

What amazed the physicians was the recovery rate of those who ingested the fake pills. Later, scientific researchers discovered that people given fake acupuncture by untrained volunteers did better than those who didn't! The same is true of people in the hospital who were told they were being given special medicine in their IV bag when it was really saline solution. And it is theorized the same thing happens when people go to a faith healer and actually begin to feel better. And so, the scientists had to create a name for this amazing self-healing ability!

So, what do they call it? Should they call it, "the mystical, magical power of people believing in things that don't exist?" That would be a good descriptive name. But it would be embarrassing to the scientists, many of whom were religious skeptics. Well, maybe we don't have to mention magic.

Why don't we call it "mind over matter," because that pretty much sums it up, right? If people believe something will heal them, they show improvement. But if it was widely believed people could heal themselves by thinking positively, they would need a physician less often, only for serious injuries. So, that's a lousy idea because it's bad for business... I know, let's call it "self-hynosis" or "auto-suggestion." Ooops, we can't do that because, for the longest time dogmatic atheists have been strenuously trying to convince everyone that hypnosis was fake, and part of the realm of magic, superstition and fantasy.

Finally, a clever researcher coined the non descriptive phrase, "The Placebo Effect." Placebo is a Latin word meaning "I Shall Please." It sounds quite vague and nowhere does it lend credit to the incredible power of the human mind.

The experts in science and medicine are in denial, of that there can be no doubt. The mystical, magical placebo effect is very troubling - so troubling, that it interferes with routine scientific experiments. Have you ever heard of a "Double-Blinded Study?" Whenever there is a promising drug, they have to do this to make sure it works with no chance of the placebo effect creeping in. Let's say you have two groups: one given the test drug and the other given the sugar pills. It's very important that those administering the pills don't know which is which, or else they may show too much enthusiasm or lack of and it will influence the mind of the test patient, ruining the results. You know, that pesky positive mental attitude creeping in there again. So, there is an overseer who has the pills marked ahead of time and he or she is the only one who knows which is which.

And here's something else to consider: besides body language, eye contact and voice inflections giving you away, there is that subtle psychic component. Along with all the sensory cues we get, flooding our consciousness each day, there is our intuition. Some listen to it, others disregard it. The big lie that has been fostered by skeptics and debunkers is that psychic abilities are an unnatural or supernatural phenomenon. In fact, quite the opposite is true.

Telepathy or thought transmission will never be proven in a lab experiment because the person promoting them self as a psychic talent is no more powerful than you or I. We are all senders and receivers and the intent of each and every person involved in the experiment would also have to be taken into consideration. If I were to plunk down a million dollars and say, okay psychic, prove your supernatural abilities and it's all yours, you'd have to realize that at least subconsciously, I'm going to be opposed to her achieving that goal and my thoughts will affect the outcome of the test. Skeptical? Well, just think of it as the so-called placebo effect.

One might ask, "Is there any other way to prove the existence of telepathy using the scientific method?" Yes, when there is a strong link or biological connection. For example, studies on identical twins with 100% matching genes and chromosomes. I knew such a pair who would always complete one another's sentences. It was very amusing and it reminded me of two identical tuning forks. You can strike one, causing it to vibrate and the other fork held several feet away will begin to vibrate also because they are on a sympathetic wavelength.

Now, those of you in college who are studying for your Master's Degree in psychology are probably aware of the behavioral research being done at the University of Minnesota on identical twins. To save time, I am going to cite for you one case study. If you wish to learn more, I suggest you do the research yourself.

Submitted for your approval, the story of Jim Lewis and Jim Springer.

1. Both twins were separated at birth and adopted by separate families in Ohio and grew up 45 miles from each other.

2. As the twins grew older, both sets of parents told them they had a twin brother, but Springer's mom told him his twin was dead.

3. Lewis persisted and went to the courthouse where he found his brother's address.

4. They nervously got together 39 years after being separated.

5. Shortly after meeting, the twins were inducted into the university study.

Here's what they found:

* Both had been named James by their adoptive parents.
* Both had married twice; first to women named Linda and second to women named Betty.
* Both had children, including sons named James Allan.
* Both had at one time owned dogs named Toy.
* Both chain-smoked and liked beer
* Both had woodworking workshops in their garages.
* Both drove Chevrolets
* Both had served as Sheriff's deputies in nearby Ohio towns
* Both vacationed on the same beach in the Florida Gulf Coast
* Both lived in the only house on their block.

The results of the tests conducted by Dr. Thomas Bouchard of the University of Minnesota were astonishing:

Both Jims had high blood pressure, both had vasectomies and both suffered migrained headaches. Brain wave tests produced skyline graphs looking like two views of the same city. And then they measured personality variables and were surprised by the similarities in those results.

Now, I'm sure many psychology students were surprised because this study seems to answer the age old question "Nature or Nurture?" In other words, are we by products of our environment, as B.F. Skinner suggested? Or does heredity play a larger role in shaping our personalities? It would appear we've grossly underestimated the role of genes and chromosomes. However, the thing that amazes me is how students and teachers will entirely ignore the fact that in the study, the twins also share an extraordinary psychic connection. Naming your dog "Toy," having a vasectomy and working as a Sheriff's deputy is not a peculiarity written in your genes. And when the same "very strange coincidences" happen in dozens of cases of reunited twins, that's not anecdotal evidence, it is a behavioral pattern.

Let me conclude by saying, the scientific method doesn't work very well when the people conducting the experiment are biased. A mountain of evidence proving Darwin's Theory that man evolved from the ape is not going to impress an anthropologist who happens to be a fundamentalist Christian. Likewise, the majority of behavioral scientists who are dogmatic atheists are unlikely to consider empirical evidence supporting magic, thought transference or synchronicity.

It is not an issue of evidence or proof - it is an issue of religion and cultural bias. Thank you for listening.

Beyond Atheism and Theism: The Shocking Truth
With Rev. John D. Allee

It is the first century of a new millennium and here in the United States, there is a cultural conflict between Christians and a new generation of atheists, invigorated by the popularity of British scientist, Richard Dawkins. According to both groups, you are either a believer or a non-believer and agnostics are simply a bunch of cowards who can't make up their minds. Well, I'd like to introduce some new ideas which will shed a different light on some of these old ideas.

While we continue to discuss these issues, I'd like to divert your attention to the following graphic depicting the left and right hemispheres of the brain. Note that the left brain functions deal with external, objective matters and the right side deals with internal, subjective matters. This graphic is very important for one seeking to explain the conflict between atheism and theism.

Let's look at Theism, with a primary emphasis on Islam and Christianity: the believer's focus primarily deals with the right brain. Left brain functions (reason, logic) are manipulated by external forces - the written word, dogmatic principles. As a result, popular religion can be dangerous and delusional.
Those who proselytize will tell you that you must worship their invisible friend. If you do not, you will be branded an infidel or burn in a lake of fire for all eternity. Furthermore, if their invisible friend does not like your invisible friend, war could result, lasting for centuries! The radical theist will blow up a clinic, strap on a bomb, attempt suicide or fly a plane into a building, all for this invisible friend. Obviously, capturing the imagination is more important than presenting facts. That's why advertising agencies, politicians and religious leaders have discovered ways to access the right side of your brain, completely bypassing critical analysis from the left. As a result, we have become a race of corporate zombies and theistic slaves.

Well, whenever you have behavior modification on this grand a scale, eventually there will come some form of resistance - a backlash. There is now a popular movement afoot to counter this madness: militant atheism.

The militant atheist says he is in charge of the left side of the brain, mistrusting his intuition and imagination. He is convinced that he has achieved some sort of "balance" since he is no longer fettered by the challenges of a right brained universe filled with thoughts, ideas, dreams and endless possibilities.
The militant atheist is primarily a nihilist who has managed to throw the baby out with the bathwater. And like any social movement, militant atheism does not promote free thought or individual sovereignty. Like the theist, they seek validation in a consensus reality where all atheists think alike.

The atheist says there is but one way to prove whether God is real or not: the scientific method. Now, I can see using science to test the physical properties of substances or how things react in an environment. But testing reality? That's a rather broad area. In the first place, reality is something the human brain experiences on an objective and subjective level. Certainly, Professor Richard Dawkins learned that when he published his book entitled, "The Selfish Gene," where he introduced the concept of memes. Dawkins attempts to explain how cultural ideas, symbols and practices are transmitted from one mind to another. Meme theory was an attempt to codify what is invariably a right brain function, which of course can't be proven empirically. So Dawkins was scientifically debunked by his atheist buddies who are apt to scoff at things like analytical psychology.

The truth is, subjective reality operates on an entirely different set of principles from objective reality and one person's experience will not necessarily be the same as the next person's. Sometimes, a cigar is not a phallic symbol - it's just a cigar - then, sometimes it is a phallic symbol. The point is not to prove whether something is true for everyone, but whether it is true for you.
Believing in weird or strange things is not necessarily bad for you. It is important to critique WHAT people choose to belief and HOW they intend to apply it.

Believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster?? GREAT, I have no problem with that. In fact, that idea can be very empowering if you think about it the right way. But if you tell me the Big Cheese is going to send the Spaghetti into a flaming lake of marinara to boil for eternity and that all must kneel before the Holy Fork or die? THEN I have a problem with you because, at that point, you become an immediate threat to others.

Now there are some people out there who put their faith in cold, hard reality. But when I further question these individuals, I find a wide disparity. It seems one person's version of cold, hard reality is not the same as the next guy's. The materialist can't run or hide from the fact that even he processes reality using both sides of his brain, whether he is willing to admit it or not. Absolutely everyone on the planet has a subjective slant or bias to their thinking and if they tell you otherwise, they are kidding themselves.

I find it odd that the father of the scientific method, Galileo, was a famous astronomer and astrologer as well. He actually charted horoscopes and got paid for it. Militant atheists denounce this practice, but are quick to employ Galileo's methods when it suits their purpose. The militant atheist will tell you that the only scientists qualified to test the veracity of a claim are those with the proper credentials. And even then, before a claim can be verified, it must be rigorously scrutinized and endorsed by all his peers. But such a process has been tainted and corrupted by those with money, power and authority.

And so we have two opposing forces, militant atheism and radical theism. Both are fearful of the day when, using both sides of your brain, you begin to weigh the evidence and then draw your own conclusions.

Would you like to test the veracity of Galileo's belief in astrology? Here's a suggestion: have a reliable source chart your horoscope for the next six months. Tuck that information safely away where you can't see it. Next, keep an accurate and detailed diary for that period of time. At the end of the six month period, take out the charts, the diary, and then compare notes. And here's where you may want to utilize the scientific method:
Are your astrological charts falsifiable? Are they worded vaguely and in such a way that they could be applied to almost every situation? If so, you may want to stop right there and proceed no further. If on the other hand, if the predictions are repeatedly true with a high rate of accuracy, say 80 to 100 per cent, you may want to examine astrology further.

The bottom line is that ultimately, only you can decide if a claim has any viability. Self ownership is where we can think unobstructed, using both sides of our brain, no longer relying on others to shape our opinions. It is reaching beyond atheism and theism, into something I’ve labeled “apotheism” and it's the next stage of human development.

Apotheism comes from the word, "apotheosis" and it is all about self-deification, discovering your own divinity. Of course, this is easier said than done. One is either self owned or one is not. For those of you who would like to embark upon this journey, we wrote what could best be described as a book for the average layperson on dialectic thinking entitled, "Right and Left of Center: Finding Balance In your Mundane and Magical Life." It is available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble and various other sellers.

I hope you found this presentation interesting and informative.

Church of Satan Rap Sheet

"We aren't theists, waiting for someone else to 'Make it so.' As Satanists, we must take the bull by the balls and shatter all who oppose us. That is, if you really do respect those who are being attacked. You are all our shock troops, our special forces, our Waffen SS, and we'd like to see you perhaps interact with one another and coordinate your attacks on those who dare to try to besmirch our organization, and those of us who I think have earned your respect as your leaders."
- Peter H. Gilmore, current Church of Satan High Priest, addressing his followers

"In February the village began praying and fasting in order to rid itself of the devil's influence. The girls were pressured to reveal who in the community controlled their behavior ... Even more troubling, Tituba confessed that a conspiracy of witches permeated Salem Village ...In March the afflicted girls accused Martha Corey. The three women previously denounced as colluding with the devil were marginal to the community. Martha (Corey's accusation) as a witch demonstrated that Satan's influence reached to the very core of the community. Events snowballed as the accusatory atmosphere intensified and reached a fever pitch.... (Finally) the hysteria played itself out as criticism of the procedures grew. (But as a result of these hate speeches) Nineteen victims of the witch-hunt had been hanged, one crushed to death under the weight of stones and at least four died in prison awaiting trial."
- "The Salem Witch Trials, 1692," EyeWitness to History, www.eyewitnesstohistory.com (2000)

See the similarity? Whether it's the Klu Klux Klan, the Nazi Party, fundamentalist born-again Christians or modern Satanists, historically, a group that is desperate for members will seek out a common scapegoat to latch on to. Sad, that many of these members do not know history and would find their leaders far less original and clever if they did.

1. Why the negativity?

The first thing you notice in Gilmore's quote is the similarity to "Hitler-speak." Why? A dictator is very similar to a cult leader: both utilize the scapegoat. This creates the illusion of a threat. As an army of ants or a hive of bees utilize the drones to protect the queen, followers of such leaders almost share an insect mind where there is little originality, but much bravado. Of course, psychology has shown us that people in groups act out in ways that they would not do if they were alone in the same situation. Thus, it is important for the drones to have a goal. And nothing binds together a group of simple-minded people more than a common enemy. It is the simple, "us vs. them" phenomenon. Don't believe me? Check out seven year olds mocking an opposing team; "We're number one, you're number two!" And, how many employers use the team approach in order to bolster productivity? You can motivate diverse individuals by giving them pride and a goal. This is done in the boardrooms, on the football fields and in churches and meeting rooms everywhwere. Further, as those in television and radio talk will tell you, it does not take much for an experienced professional to insight and excite the average talk show guest in the "green room" of the station. In the end, all the examples we've given you utilize basic sales techniques to buy what you are selling, be it an expensive membership to a club, the idea that your neighbor is evil, the vision of your team as champions or that your pastor's interpretation of the bible is the only one, true way.

2. Brand name recognition pays off.

Every year, billions of dollars are spent by companies to instill in the minds and hearts of consumers, the quality of and necessity for their particular product. Today, we don't ask for a tissue, but a Kleenex (TM). If your boss asks for a Xerox of that report, you'll know what to do. If you order Pepsi, don't be surprised if the waiter asks, "Is Coke okay?" Does it matter that your phone is from AT&T (TM) or your new pet eats Puppy Chow (TM)? Ask a beer drinker, a skier, a stock car race fan, a young mother or a cigarette smoker if brand matters. Further, if you were to ask the Pepsi drinker why his version was better than the generic cola, or as Mrs. Brown why she continues to go to the same Baptist Church, don't expect an intelligent answer. Habits die hard. The frequency and repitition of the message or the action make a distinct difference.

Do you realize that advertisers spend billions of dollars to place their name on a blimp, a billboard or to plaster their name all over a NASCAR team? One has to wonder if Pepsi is better than budget cola or if we simply believe it's better from what we've seen, read and heard. Also, they tell us that joining the Church of Satan grants one a special "badge of honor." To borrow a quote from the Treasure of Sierra Madre, as Satanists, "We don't need no stinkin' badges!"

3. Gullibility is not congruent with independent thought.

Does it make sense that independent thinkers are even lured by advertising tactics or cult leaders with tired, worn-out, regurgitated hate speeches?

4. You can't celebrate life, yet declare it meaningless.

If you read the Satanic Bible and LaVey's whole idea of an "impersonal force" or intelligence behind the Universe - his book clearly promoted Deism or more precisely, Panentheism and magic. He was not trying to promote materialistic atheism, which is the belief that life is meaningless, there is no intelligence behind the Universe and everything that brought us to where we are now is some kind of freak accident or incredible stroke of luck.

In his attempt to distance himself from the alleged "pseudo-Satanists", Peter Gilmore promoted materialistic atheism. But, in promoting this philosophy, was not LaVey's magic and Deism somehow lost in the process? And, why did he adopt the title, "Magus?" In Webster's Dictionary, this word means "magician" or "sorceror." This does not tie in neatly with materialistic atheism.

The point is, even if you agree with Peter Gilmore and you're a total atheist, why use LaVey's name and reputation to get your point across? Gilmore could start his own Church of Satanic Atheism and most would be pleased.

5. A New Witch Hunt Begins

For many years, "Magus" Gilmore has been using his time and energy to expose other Satanic groups and their leaders as "bunco" or "untermensch" or "alleged pedophiles". Did he not realize that an obsession can become a curse? To quote Nietzsche, "Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster. And if you gaze long enough into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."

6. Docket K65760

Rev. William Gidney or Jesus of Borg was grotto master for the Nepotism Grotto of the Church of Satan. He was married to Gabrielle, a serial abuse victim who calls herself "Ygraine." She, along with other Church of Satan members, frequently accused critics of the organization of being child molesters on alt.satanism, an Internet newsgroup. Gossip concerning these allegations quickly spread and were widely disseminated. Ygraine's hubby, William, did nothing about this hysterical behavior. Apologies came from those susceptible to this slander, but they arrived too late. Scuttlebutt or gossip continued for many years and the lives of innocent people were badly damaged.

Often, in the law, one hears talk about the "objective theory" where jurors when deciding a verdict, are instructed to base their decision as a reasonable sane person would do in same or similar circumstances. Did anyone ever check with law enforcement or the websites that list sex offenders? No. Ygraine allegedly lacked the capacity to figure this one out, but she was able to understand the importance of the justice system when her own husband was accused of this crime.

Rev. Gidney was arrested in July 2003 for at least three counts of felony sex assault/abuse of a minor child. He was living in Pennsylvania with an anonymous woman who was carrying his boy-child at the time of his arrest. The woman ultimately decided to give up the child for adoption upon his birth on March 4, 2004.

Ygraine Gidney is currently a high ranking Magistra in the Church of Satan. She allegedly continues to torment complete strangers, accusing them of sexual deviancy, but seems to refuse to deal with her own demons. Take, for instance Ygraine's recent love interest, Jim Mitchell, professional wrestler and celebrity priest in the Church of Satan. In the new book about WWE champion Chris Benoit's death, Ring of Hell by Matthew Randazzo V, Jim Mitchell states, "I've been places with my cock you wouldn't go with a pistol." On page 221, the book continues, "Mitchell's favorite pastime while on the road with WCW was to film comedic home porn with ring rats and hold viewing parties for the boys at the hotels."

Then there was Rev. Thomas "Azazel" Blumenthal of Allen Park, Michigan, who made contact with members of President Bush's security detail and shortly thereafter was arrested for having kiddie porn on his computer. Blumenthal was a known child molester years before joining the Church of Satan. He served a 4 year sentence for soliciting sex with a child under 13. Reference, (1) (2) (3)

7. What Goes Around, Comes Around

In an eerie twist, Peter Gilmore describes the elitist tactic employed by the Church of Satan in his book, The Satanic Scriptures, page 47:

"That plebians have a capacity for swallowing-whole myriad concepts without factual basis is what makes them so easily manipulated. It is their inability to check the doled-out illusions against reality that allows this to continue. All the would-be leader needs to do is to tell his intended followers that they are somehow special, 'elect,' unique, or superior, and they will gleefully accept these false compliments. The leader simply tells his flock that they are elite, and points out some manifest destiny of his own choosing, and the sheep sprint to the slaughter. Never underestimate people's tendency to identify with something deemed superior by an authority figure in an attempt at self-elevation."

I could point to other examples, but what purpose would that serve? Some Church of Satan members are completely innocent - unaware of what goes on behind the scenes. If they knew what other members were involved with, they would disaffiliate poste haste! The Church of Satan is a sad imitation of evangelical Christians and the Catholic church. They assuage their flock and demonize outcasts, but are generally unrepentant and blind to their own hypocrisy.

On Wings of Leather,
John D. Allee, Founder
Allee Shadow Tradition

LaVey advised that he has been the victim of numerous attacks, both verbal and physical, because of his association with the Church of Satan. He advised because of the occasional notoriety that he receives as the founder and priest of the church association, he does attempt to surround himself with friends and associates when he travels. He advised these people are not armed and are not employed as bodyguards. LaVey stated that he is well aware that most people associated with the Church of Satan are in fact "fanatics, cultists and weirdoes." He stated that his interest in the Church of Satan as strictly from a monetary point of view and spends his time furnishing interviews, writing material, and lately has become interested in photography.

Rest In Peace

A Matter of of Life and Death: An Interview with FCoS Founder John D. Allee

by Lillee Allee

John and LilleeWith the deaths of Terry Schiavo and the Pope John Paul II, many people are asking the hard questions about rights and living wills, health care proxies, euthanasia, and other spiritual and ethical concerns regarding the beginning and ending of what one would define as life.

While many Satanists are seen as uncaring and cavalier regarding these issues, John Allee states that these are issues that pagans and Satanists should be discussing with their partners, families, friends and within their organizations.

John and I recently discussed these issues and decided it was time to offer answers to some of the questions being asked.

LCA: Do Satanists celebrate life? Or do they see it as suffering?

JDA: Unlike the Buddhist mantra that all life is sorrow, the Satanic philosophy is that life is something to celebrate and cherish. Let's be honest here, no one has proven that the options are better. In fact, some people see life as an amusement park ride: it has its scary points, and it is annoying to wait in line, but in the end, you would probably want to do it again if you chose the right ride and the right partner. Life can be exciting and it can be excruciating, but there is much joy to being alive.

Some will tell us that we know we are alive when we suffer, as somehow things become more real. This may be true. However, we also need to evolve and accept our shadow sides and the shadow side of life and take it as it comes. There is nothing to be sad about, until the end when life looms quite vividly in front of our eyes. Then we have to make decisions. Anton Lavey said "no one wants to leave a party" when he talked about the end of life. Part of our responsibility is to make sure we enjoy life to the fullest. It is about living in the here and now, not the past and not obsessing about the future.

LCA: John, many people are shocked when we state that as Satanists we believe in the right to life. Do you want to explain this?

JDA: These people who are shocked believe that Satanists are strictly mercenary and cold blooded. Satanism promotes egoism, that's true, but a healthy egoism strengthened by positive interaction with one's environment. You cannot isolate the ego and expect it to flourish. Therefore, Satanists do not take a nihilistic stance - we embrace the force which produces life and celebrate life in the here and now! We are not waiting for a better hereafter or living in fear of a worse fate as punishment for sins.

Quality of life is certainly an issue - but the question remains who makes the judgment? This is where sovereignty and personal autonomy enters into the equation.

LCA: So you are saying that a DNR (or Do Not Resuscitate) order in the case of a person who has suffered a severe injury or collapse is appropriate?

JDA: If that is their will, and recognized by that individual beforehand, absolutely. On the other hand, I understand that if someone is terminal and wants to end their life, they should be able to have counseling and have a choice like Dr. Kervorkian has allegedly assisted people with. I understand my view is controversial. However, if the situation is such that the individual prefers death to the other options, then that is also their right. There is a difference between making a sane choice and being of sound mind and body, and someone who chooses to exit due to mental issues that could be resolved and worked out.

LCA: Do you believe in health care proxies and living wills?

JDA: I decided to have a health care proxy and that should be honored by my family, friends and the court. This is my choice. I would like to see living wills and these proxies done on video so there is no hearsay. If Mrs. Schiavo's wishes had been videotaped, most people would have fewer questions regarding her husband's actions. If he did do as she asked, it is sad that he has to go through so much grief. If he did not, it is even worse that it is allowed to be decided in a court instead of sanely and privately between family members.

LCA: There are divided opinions regarding the fate of Terry Schiavo. Some Satanists say it was no one's business, others say the husband was in the right, Any comment on this?

JDA: It was no one's business until the dispute between the family and husband was brought to the media and the courts. This is tragic in itself. The husband may not have been acting appropriately, but that is a hard one to judge since few people can honestly say they have been in the same situation. This underscores the importance of individual sovereignty. If nothing else good comes of it, we at least had these not so pretty issues of death staring us in the face. Now people will talk more about their own care and that of others. Maybe more will write out health care wishes. We have a society that invites discussion, debate and social change. This is not always a bad thing.

LCA: Was it hard for you to think about a health care proxy?

JDA: Of course, a Satanist, especially, hates to think about relinquishing control. Choose the person with care and talk to that person again and again. Make sure there is no other agenda than your own wishes. Make sure they understand that it is your wishes that are to be honored and not theirs, even in such an emotional moment. This is why it is so important to talk to your loved ones about death at a time when it is not imminent or during the midst of a health crisis. A living will is important and should be looked into by everyone at any age.

LCA: What is the end of life, in your opinion?

JDA: I think that for everyone, that answer may be different. To me, the end of life is what medical doctors say it is - no brain wave - a flat EEG. Even with a heartbeat, with no brainwave, the person is dead. The body may not be, but the person is gone. This is why many people choose not to have any life sustaining equipment. A machine can keep your heart going, but there is nothing that can keep your brain alive or healthy except for us.

LCA: What about in the case of severe brain damage?

JDA: This is tricky and should only be looked at by individuals in a case by case basis. Some people would be horrified at the thought of being in a vegetative state, while others would hope a breakthrough could occur. Only the person can make that decision. I know I would not want to be a burden on anyone for the rest of their life, so it would be my time to go.

LCA: Does that open the door to possible issues with children born brain damaged or the mentally retarded?

JDA: There need to be laws to protect these innocents. Again, there has to be an issue regarding the health and status of the child and not simply what the parents can afford in terms of care or possible rehabilitation. If we all are gods, are not these children as well? This is not just a parental concern, but part of a larger social contract. We should be on the side of everyone being given a chance at life.

LCA: Have you had any personal revelations from this?

JDA: I am very proud to be an American. At least in our country, we have no secrets, our dirty laundry is on the world news, but we can learn and change from this as well. Terry's legacy may well be that people will have their wishes respected when they are not in a condition to speak for themselves. This is important. We need to review and test our laws, even when we don't like the answers or decisions that are handed down. Our system can work, sometimes it does not work as well as we would like, or as fast, but in the end, we can see that maybe some good will come from this.

Introduce Yourself

I am John Allee, one of the co-founders of the Allee Shadow Tradition, along with Lillee Allee. The Tradition is not a religion, but a philosophical and magical group.

Aren't you a well known Satanist?

I play one on television, but any similarity ends there. Actually, I'm a Deist. I believe the Universe was created and not eternal or accidental. We have the painting, but to dismiss that there is no painter is illogical.

Does This Mean That You Believe In A Personal God or Devil?

Not necessarily. You see, individual perception is everything. Each one of us is the center of a Universe.

And if your Universe is an atheist one, then FOR YOU a deity really doesn't exist.

On the other hand, if you believe in Allah, Vishnu, Yahweh, Satan or whatever.. then FOR YOU a deity really does exist. The self-assumed delusion becomes one's operational and functional personal reality. We create gods in our own image from a force within our psyche and the universe tends to mirror back what individual consciousness projects upon it. This is the whole idea behind co-creationism.

It's that simple and that difficult to understand. Personal reality is NOT a one-size-fits-all situation.

What Happens When A Person Changes Their Belief System?

One of my students mentioned the experience of a man who was an atheist most of his life. He then experienced a personal crisis and an epiphany occured where a deity came and spoke to him. Following this experience, the former atheist turned his life around - stopped drinking, developed a renewed sense of purpose, joined a philanthropic group. The question is, "If perception is reality, how can a god seemingly come to you if your personal perception is that of an atheist?" Good question.

I've heard more than a few stories of people having an epiphany following a crisis. One such story describes the genesis of the Temple of Set. But I'm not satisfied with a simple pop psychology explanation. Such transformative experiences do occur, but it is questionable whether a devil or saint was involved. I offer another explanation:

Change is the universal constant and that includes one's personal reality. The subjective universe we carry between our two ears is malleable and can be influenced by external forces, both physical and non-physical. We live in a universe of infinite possibilities and layers upon layers of intelligence, subtly interwoven. There are other life forms and other dimensions, co-existing.

In times of crisis, an expansion of consciousness may occur, the mind reaching out. In such cases, one can experience contact with an intelligence more complex than his own and his mind will translate the experience as an encounter with a mythic form. What's important is not the mask they come wearing, be it devil or saint, but the message they impart and how that it affects the individual's life.

Earlier, we were discussing the Egyptian pantheon. Other than human intelligences may have inspired the idea for Anubis, Set, Osiris, Isis, etc. But if you were to gather these entities in a room together, they would not necessarily think of themselves or each other as "gods." Of course, we see them that way, because humans can't imagine life evolving any further than where we are presently...

Do you worship evil?

You can not even define evil without discussing what is good. Therefore, the two are inseparable. One can not understand darkness without experiencing light. One cannot appreciate day, without having night. Opposites compliment, define and complete one another. To destroy all evil in the world means there would be no good left to appreciate, therefore the Shadow Dweller does not worship or disrespect either quality! We value ourselves and nature instead and venerate opposition in balance!

The definition of good and evil is subject to change because it exists only as a perception. "Evil" is a label we assign according to our mood swings to those who are politically incorrect. The ascended masters of Eastern Philosophy become the fallen angels of Western Philosophy. One man's "demons" are another man's "saints." Theologians create gods and devils in man's image, then conflict between them to divide the heart and conquer the soul! They pit spirit against matter, then appoint themselves position of supreme arbiter, divine interpreter of right and wrong, good and evil.

"Good" are the things we like. "Evil" are the things we dislike. It often depends on who or what you are. As Diane Vera says, if you're a mouse, cats are evil, but to the pet owner, cats are heavenly. Therefore, evil is not an essence - it is a value judgment. From a Christian point of view, Satan is "evil." Shadow Dwellers are truth seekers who desire to peek behind such labels.

Of course, there are certain ethical wrongs, but they are set by a society or culture so that all can live harmoniously. Examples of these would be thieving, disrespectful behavior and killing or abusing an innocent.

A chief attribute of the trickster god is the role of Devil's Advocate. The Shadow Dweller illustrates "opposition in balance," wielding contradiction like a scalpel in the hand of a skilled surgeon. Our objective? Closure to this unnatural dichotomy, this madness you call "good and evil." Bringing flesh and spirit together. The establishment of a New World Order, free of guilt, self-loathing and shame, where every man and woman is the god of his or her own life. We look upon religion as the starter of wars and the breeder of hate and intolerance. We believe that people are intelligent enough to instill moral and ethical codes into a societal structure without a threat of an imaginary supernatural being wreaking havoc on an offender.

Are God and the Devil enemies?

As I've explained, if you're going to believe there is a god and a devil who are enemies, that will become your personal reality. And you will be at war with yourself, because those two elements will be struggling against one another in your mind. It is the conflicted personality that is the easiest to control and manipulate, and that's how organized religions operate.

Islamic fundamentalists and Christians define themselves as monotheists, but practice dualism; they imagine a devil opposed to the creator, but creation cannot be divided against itself. Using their own logic, one could argue; if a devil physically exists, then God exists. And, if God created Satan, then God is Satan. You cannot create something unless it is a manifestation of your own will. How can you make a computer if you don't know how? You would have to base it on knowledge of that computer, or in this case, God's knowledge of "evil." So, God is evil. If God created hell, he'd have to know about eternal torment, meaning God is tormented. If God created humans, and humans are imperfect, God is imperfect. Even the bible contradicts the split mind theology practiced by Christians. I refer to Isaiah 45:7, "I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things."

Do you believe in hell?

Polybius, the ancient historian, said:

"Since the multitude is ever fickle, full of lawless desires, irrational passions and violence, there is no other way to keep them in order but by the fear and terror of the invisible world; on which account our ancestors seem to me to have acted judiciously, when they contrived to bring into the popular belief these notions of the gods, and of the infernal regions."

As you can see from this quote, it was political and economic leaders who created these religious myths in order to keep people under their power. The ancient Roman leaders gave the people breads and circuses; carnivals, gladiator shows, and a host of underworld myths in order to keep the people ignorant and too busy to think for themselves. People create their own heavens and hells.

What are the rules of the Allee Shadow Tradition?

People who are looking for a book of rules to live by do not win my respect. Our brand of spirituality isn't based upon a book, presumably inspired by some higher authority.

We are not looking for those who want to argue over their past conditioning or who wish to confine themselves based on their past experiences. We wish to help those individuals who are intelligent enough and courageous enough to not only create a set of rules for themselves, but then live by them. Only this will result in balanced individuals who can function in society.

Is Satanism a negative, destructive force in the world today?

The result of manifesting something in your life can be pleasant or catastrophic. In this case, it all depends on how the individual relates to this dark figure. Do you believe in a Devil who was a heroic symbol for some during the Middle Ages, liberating the serfs from the shackles of slavery to an oppressive Church system? If you attach yourself to this hero figure, that will be reflected in your life - you may even become a positive role model for others. But if you follow the current Hollywood trend and worship a nasty Devil who rebels against everyone, chances are, you will become the thing you worship: an outcast - someone who can't work or play well with others - in other words, a loser. To quote Thomas Paine, "Belief in a cruel god makes a cruel man."

Is Satanism a valid path?

The validity of a spiritual or philosophical path, can only be weighed and determined by the individual because we are essentially dealing with relative truths. If you were to rephrase the question and ask if I believed Satanism helps one to excel, again I would state that it depends on how the individual relates to various aspects of the philosophy and what it reveals to them. People look for a symbol or metaphor to attach blame or praise, but much has to do with the will and intent of the individual responsible and the way in which these symbols are interpreted.

What About Exorcisms?

Originally this word came from the Catholic Church with set rituals and prayers. Priests who were trained would deal in cases such as this. Also, believers were given prayers to say that would help keep 'evil' at bay.

Today's Roman Catholic Church still has trained exorcists, however, they rarely perform exorcisms, and the Church always looks for natural, medical and psychological causes first.

Other religious sects are not so professional in their dealings with their beliefs. Recently here in the United States, two Christian parents were
arrested for beating the devil out of their child during an exorcism rite, effectively killing her. Of course, you'll never hear a lead story with the
caption "Christian parents kill child" because it would offend many listeners. It is also irresponsible journalism. But if the caption reads "Satanist parents kill child in bizarre ritual," that would be front page headlines.

Since Paul's letters in the New Testament, the devil has served the convenient function of scapegoat and that tradition is reflected in today's news headlines. What this accomplishes is to deflect blame onto an impersonal devil. People need to take responsibility for their own thoughts, words and actions.

The truth is, you won't see these cases of demon possession in cultures that don't believe in a devil. The Christian and Islamic cultures induce this form of socialized schizophrenia by telling you that the animal side of you is "evil"and must be suppressed! And so, like a pressure cooker, certain people blow their tops. Their heads spin, and they vomit pea soup. But that's what you get for going against nature - that's what you get for waging war against the "devil," which is really an important and necessary part of you. And so you see, I'm not arguing that these incidents occur, I'm arguing why they occur. And it isn't the devil's fault. It's our fault.

The truth is, there is no objective basis for evil, otherwise it would have consistent features that are clearly definable. Again, I'll use the analogy:
To a mouse, cats are hideously evil monsters with fangs and claws that rip you apart. To the cat owner, they are heavenly bundles of fur, who purr and can even lower your blood pressure when you pat them!

So, are cats good or evil? The answer I usually get is, "Neither. They are what they are." Well, the same could be said of humans - we are what we are. So, let's stop playing these games of "good" and "evil" because it is causing too many problems. People even crash planes into buildings believing that they are killing Satan. It isn't working. Satan is alive and well and living inside each of us. The only way you are going to get rid of him is to destroy the human race... who wants to be first?

Is the Devil all about repressed thoughts and desires?

There could be something to this idea. Certainly, throughout history, we have seen that people believe that the devil is responsible for thoughts and actions considered "evil" and "wicked." This would include alternative sexual lifestyles, radical beliefs, or anything that is not what could be considered a societal norm.

When I was featured in a Boston weekly entertainment newspaper during Halloween or Samhain, I received many phone calls from transvestites - men who were fond of wearing women's clothes. At first, this confused me, because I couldn't understand why they would have any interest or feel a connection to what I had to say about Satanism. What I found is that the devil often represents repressed thoughts and desires; those things we never want anyone to know about or that we are ashamed of in our lives. The devil represents those characteristics within ourselves that we find undesirable - that we would rather shove into one corner and totally ignore. Some of these naturally should be explored, others are best given an alternative outlet.

My question to you is, "Do you really think it's wise to repress thoughts and desires?" When a person goes for psychological counseling, they are attempting to focus on certain memories or experiences locked away in the shadows and bring them out into the light where they can be examined. This is why I tell people they should not fear the devil, but attempt to look beyond good and evil in their search for the truth.

Throwing Curses - A Study Guide by J. Allee

It's funny how most of the questions I receive concern themselves with curses, not magic in general. But that is normal - the average person who has been treated badly is going to think at some point in their life, "Boy, wouldn't it be great if I could just twitch my nose and make that jackass fall down a flight of stairs?" You have thought it and I have thought it, so let's not kid ourselves. In our book, "Right and Left of Center," Lillee describes how even a prayer can be a curse. "Please God, make so-and-so pay for what they did to me." So let us get to the questions:

1. What is Magic and Does It Work?

Well, magic is created in the subjective mind - the world of the imagination, dreams and the emotions - but magic is more than just fairy tales or science fiction fantasy.

We know that "real" events in the solid, objective world can alter the way our subjective mind reacts to things. For instance, hopefully you are not too young to remember 9-11. That event, with planes crashing into a building and thousands dying, caused many people, related and unrelated to the deceased, to experience nightmares and phobias such as an emotional fear of boarding planes. The airline industry was greatly affected.

So, we know for a fact that events in the objective world can change our subjective world and what Carl Jung called our "collective unconscious." This probably explains the cult following of the movie, Cloverfield, but I digress.

I'm going to tell you something that should be obvious:

Cause and effect is a two-way street. Manipulating your imagination, dreams and emotions will likewise influence or effect the solid, real, objective world as well! That is the basis of magic. Does it work? Of course it works, but you must consider balance, direction, timing and above all intent.

2. Why Do You Perform A Curse?

I curse those who have really gone out of their way to hurt me without just cause. For example, a Salem Witch was jealous of my relationship with Lillee. He did everything he could to come between us including magic spells and spreading hateful gossip all over town. He even tried to extort property from me.

Before I could throw a curse, I had to study and evaluate all the reasons for this hostility. I came to realize I was dealing with a very self-destructive, drug-addicted personality who tended to lash out at those around him who were truly happy.

I visualized a cocoon around the Salem Witch and kept repeating to him mentally, "You can hurt no one but yourself now. The harm you do to others will be mirrored back." This gave him two options: confront his psychological issues head on and effect permanent change OR succumb to the mirror spell and die. He chose the second option and died four weeks later.

The curse I performed was not miraculous because the person in question was suicidal to begin with. He was standing on the precipice and all I did was come along and give him a little psychic "push." The balance of nature was clearly on my side, so there will be no terrifying cosmic repercussion or "three-fold return."

Needless to say, you can't curse a person living an honest existence, who is true to themselves and others. And why would you want to curse such a person? Just be careful that in throwing the curse, you are not the one with the defective personality.

3. How Do You Feel Throwing A Curse?

It is cathartic, because you are releasing pent-up hostility. The secret is that, once you get it out of your system, just let go and forget about it.

4. How Do You Know It Is Going To Work?

You don't. The point is to let go and let nature take its course. If you worry about the outcome, or continue to think about your spell, you will fritter away the potential or stored up energy awaiting release, greatly diminishing its effectiveness.

5. What Is The Best Way to Throw A Spell?

Visualize the outcome. Put your thoughts, energy, feelings, into the end result. Let Nature decide the course of events leading to the desired result. Once you have performed the spell, put it entirely out of your mind. Two weeks later, you  may feel like performing your spell again. Do it and once more, forget about it entirely.

6. Will my Curse Affect the Right Person?

If you lack self confidence or have "mental problems," you should not perform magic. The psychic forces suppressing you will likely feed off the energy, further exacerbating your condition. This reminds me of a real incident:

We'll call this man, Roger. He belonged to an occult study group.

One day, Roger fell in love with Dolores, who was using him to get revenge on his Roger's wife. He was so smitten, he left his wife and three kids and ran off with Dolores. Well, soon after, Dolores lost interest and threw Roger out of her apartment. He was devastated because he lost everything - his wife, children and lover.

Instead of blaming his own poor judgment and weak character, Roger blamed Dolores for everything and performed a powerful destruction ritual upon her. The next morning, he woke up feeling completely devastated and emotionally consumed, desperate. He began stalking Dolores - she filed a restraining order which Roger ignored. Two weeks later, Roger was arrested. He is now serving time in prison.

So, do not worry. A curse will always affect the "right person." The one who is the weakest link, psychologically IS the right person.

7. Do Curses Harm The Innocent?

Wars are messy and innocent lives are lost despite our claims of "pin point accuracy." Our enemy wisely launches his missiles from heavily populated urban areas. So even if the battle is won, we lose the war of hearts and minds when we counter-attack.

Curses are also messy and innocent lives are lost despite magicians claims of "pin point accuracy." Truly rotten people are often buffered or protected by those whom they fleece and manipulate. So even if the curse is successful, innocent ones CAN and WILL be affected, emotionally and psychically.
