KY [MAKI NAKANO/YANN PITTARD]
- Chansons Muettes et Musiques Bavardes (Open Music 01; EEC)

KY consists of Maki Nakano on alto sax, bass clarinet & voice and Yann Pittard on baritone guitar, oud & effects. This fine French duo played at The Stone this past weekend (9/5/09) and word is that they were pretty cool. The opening piece has somber, dreamy vibe with sexy spoken word vocals in French and spacy guitar. All of the songs here were composed by one or the other members of the duo or both with one cover by Erik Satie. Satie's "Je Te Veux" is a quaint, lovely song with tasty whistling solo and sublime female vocals. Maki has an elegant tone on her alto sax which works superbly with Yann's exquisite, laid back guitar playing. I dig the way Maki's voice(s) floats on echoes with delicate guitar swirling around on "Petit Enfant". This entire disc has a certain enticing charm that seems perfect for a quiet, overcast day such as this. This disc is basically an EP with 12 songs clocking in at 28 minutes. Is does seem like the perfect length for the enchanting vibe that pervades. Plus -while copies last- it's inexpensive for an import!
