“Hindsight vision is 20/20” a phrase spoken by anyone who has lived long enough to take a look at the past and see things clearer, with more focus and purpose. This year has seen the death of many famous figures in the media, which reminded many how mortal we all are, how no matter how famous we become death is still around the corner. In the recent months I have made a commitment to reach out to artists across the world to collaborate in our effort to spread the message we have initiated here at Acrylick. I reached out to DJ’s across the U.S and made many friends along the way. The passing of Adam Michael Goldstein/DJ AM/ AM/ AMG really struck a nerve that many in the Industry felt. I no longer just looked at him as just as a “DJ” who played music at clubs and made people want to dance, but I knew that he, like all the other DJ’s I reached out to had a story, a reason why he had impacted music the way he did. In my search for his story I found that he was really just like everyone else trying to make it in this world except that he had a ridiculous amount of talent. One of life’s great ironies is that such talent and genius often comes from a dark troubled past and unfortunately for Adam his was no exception.
He was born on March 30, 1973 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania into a small Jewish family. His childhood was affected by different family issues including abuse by his father, divorce, drugs and alcohol. From a young age Adam chose to focus his attention on music because it was one thing that never let him down, “music was my escape from issues I had confronted,” Adam recalled. (Now at this time music was going through a transformation of its own because a young 21 year old Michael Jackson was about to revolutionize the music industry with his first solo record “Off the Wall”) Michael Jackson became an idol to Adam as to many who grew up during Michael’s glorious years; it was easy to fall in love with music when it was at its best. “Michael was a hero to me as a child, and his music helped my career to be known as an adult.” By the age of 14, he moved to LA with his mother and started getting heavy into drugs and partying. He was in and out of drug rehabilitation centers from the age of 14 to the age of 25 and lost his father to AIDS during this time.
AM’s love for music was stronger than the struggles that he faced growing up and he chose to make a career out of what he loved the most, music. Dj’ing had been around long before Adam spinned his first records. Pioneers of Dj’ing like DJ Premier and the great Jazzy Jeff were an inspiration to him and other DJ’s at the time. He spent most of his early Dj’ing days spinning at house parties, small gigs or where ever he could be heard. He finally committed to sobriety at the age of 25 and started the long road that awaited him. It is important and inspirational to note that it was during his sober years that he created his best work. Often times people associate drug and alcohol use to artistic genius but in his case it was the opposite. His talent did not need outside help it could succeed all on its own. It was during his last 11 years of life that he would like his idol once did revolutionize music once again. He became the Adam that the mainstream world knows today by Dj’ing at clubs, massive events, and with other famous artists like Travis Barker(Blink 182), Jay Z, to name a few. In September of 2008 Adam along with friend Travis barker were the only survivors when their plane crashed down in South Carolina. Adam had escaped death once more, because he had attempted suicide before but failed when the gun did not go off. It is hard to imagine what a person goes threw after such a horrific event but it seemed that Adam had managed the best way he could and came back to the music scene to continue his great work. AM used his talent, and created a partnering DJ Label named Deckstar. Deckstar, created a DJ Label to give up and coming DJ’s as well as established ones a chance to display their raw talents across the world. As his good friend DJ Scene (Label mate from Deckstar) mentioned to me “He was one of the best DJ’s I’ve ever heard….Incredibly talented and creative.” With the respect from his peers and fans, AM made a brand out of his talent and people took notice. Like Nike! AM was obsessed with shoes and had easily over a 700 pair of shoes.” A simple obsession with shoes made AM even more relatable to his fans, because who can’t recall their first pair of Nikes or waiting for the new Jordan’s to come out. And this is the AM that all who knew him remember as just a normal guy always willing to lend a helping hand.
On august 28 th Adam was found dead in his New York apartment due to an apparent drug overdose, it seems that he lost his battle with drugs, but in the end it did not define who he was. Adam was laid to rest the day before his childhood hero Michael Jackson was finally buried. We might never find out the true facts leading up to both of their deaths, but we can find solace in knowing that they are both resting in peace together. I believe that many people can see themselves through Adams story; fans of every age can relate somehow to the trials and tribulations of his life and hopefully take the positive over the negative. I write this blog also in hopes to inspire future DJ’s and realize the impact that one life can have on the world. However, some will say that only true fans of music can fully understand the impact AM had to the world of DJ’s. Nevertheless, the impact can be seen through the outpour of support that came from the DJ community through mediums such as the internet, radio and television. I have read blogs after blogs of people who knew him personally and in all of them was the same need to express what a great down to earth guy, Adam was. Although the Music community has lost two of its greatest talents I cant help but think back to a speech that Steve Jobs once gave when he said “death is the destination we all share, no one has ever escaped it, and that is as it should be because death is very likely the single best invention of life” … it is life’s change agent, it clears out the old to make way for the new, and right now the knew is you.” Even though we lost AM way to soon, he was an innovator who paved the way for DJ’s to take what he created and make it their own.
May you rest in peace!

My friends, I know there are tons of noteworthy albums dropping today from some legends in the game. But really, you've been there and done that, let's try something different. But before you go cop Eminem, Busta Rhymes, or Red & Meth, download my brand new EP titled, I Choose You, presented by Acrylick Clothing. It's feel good, uplifting music that actually has some substance and a message behind it. I Choose You, the listener. So I'm giving you free music. And you should pass it forward, on to your friends, families, and even strangers who have good taste in music. Not to mention, it's full of dope beats and dope rhymes. Plus, you can bump this joint in front of your Momma and she'll be feeling it. What's better than that? It won't cost you a dime, that's what. It's the perfect way to kick off the summer, Cali style.

If the title doesn't grab you, the beat will. If the beat doesn't grab you, then the message will. If the message doesn't grab you, then you don't have a pulse.
The FCC presents one of L.A.'s homegrown talents, Basicali. The independent artist has been holding it down for Cali since before most of you were even listening to hip hop music. 1999. He's a staple in the L.A.'s independent music scene, and everyone and their momma seems to know him. Shit, I think even my Mom has met him. Having worked with the likes of , Basicali represents for you: the common man, woman, and child.
Here's the first track from his upcoming EP, I Choose You, presented by Acrylick Clothing, which drops May 19th for free download. Thumbs Up!
