19 years ago might seem like ages when SUD's first opened...but to me I remember it like it was last year. I was away at school and couldn't get a co-op job cause the auto industry was in shambles. Friends were applying for Student Venture Loans to start landscaping and house painting companies for the summer but I had a better idea - there were no skateshops in our area - we had to drive to Big Bob's in Orchard Park NY to buy our shit - or risk mail-order scammers and harsh border duties and taxes. There were a couple shops in Toronto - Hogtown and Rodent Skates (I think?) but that was even further away. I applied for and got my venture loan ($3000 - the max allowed and had to be repaid by the end of the summer) and started looking for a spot to open. 5A Bond St was perfect - small, cheap and available for rent. It took us a couple weeks to renovate the 700 sq ft shop, and Danny Z busted out a hand painted sign for us. I drove up to S+J Sales and met Dave who gave us alotta great advice. We spent $2000 on the coolest shit and drove it back....filling the store for the first time was one of the coolest memories I have to this day. We planned to open May 1st - but stores weren't allowed to open on Sundays back then - but fuck it - we couldn't wait till Monday. Bob Patrick, our new neighbour (Patrick Bros) said he was gonna call the cops on us, but I guess he never did...we eventually became great neighbours. Anyway, we sold 3 stickers that first day. Over the course of the summer of '88 we started a team and had a steady flow of biz from the local skaters. I paid off the loan no problem - but instead of shutting it down, I went back to school at Waterloo and my brother Chris and Tom Nagel ran the shop during the week ...and I came back most weekends.

Over the years we moved to our present location, opened and closed a shop in Niagara Falls. We had a lot of great times and alotta bad times - its the nature of the game I guess. A ton of shops opened all boasting to put us outta biz - but all failed.

The best part about the past 19 years was all our staff, crew and teamriders - the SUD family. Watching them all grow from annoying little groms to adults with kids of their own is something I never envisoined - but will never forget!

It all started from a vert ramp in the woods (Hydro Ramp) and continued to be all about skateboarding. From the team, to the events (the Pit comps, Street Attack at Crystal Beach, the $1000 Mini Ramp Bash, March Break Madness, etc) to the demo's (Santa Cruz, Birdhouse, Blockhead, Emerica, Blind, Toy Machine, etc) to the road trips (Atlantic City, Montreal, San Diego, Vegas, etc) to working with city councils to build the Niagara Falls and St Catharines skateparks...our main goal was alwyas to put the Niagara Region on the skateboard map.  

The shop gave me a summer job that became a full time business. It also led to my current career as a sales rep for a skateboard shoe company. I met my future wife coming home on those weekends. In short - skateboarding has given me everything I have in my adult life...
