Hi Fans, I'd like you all to help me. I've been studying all these internets, YouTubes, and all the effects they are meant to have on our careers. I've consulted with high priced advisors. Talked to hipsters. The word on the street is ENGAGE YOUR INTERNET FANS. So, fan, I want to engage you. Understand, I'm merely a musician, my way to engage my fans is to write songs, perform them, sign your CD's, be nice, and hope you like. I'd rather let someone else do this, give them their 15% of my career, and leave me to my thing. But I've learned that no-one wants to do that until they see that you yourself happen to be very good at it. It's a big, bad, e-world out there, and I need some graphic suggestions.
How can I engage you, my fans? You put your name on a list at one of my shows, or through my web pages, and I want to reward your 5-10 second investment with some engagement. I would like you ALL to write back with somethine to say on this topic. As many of you know, I relocated from Austin to Nashville in part to work with a HIGH OCTANE touring agency!! Which failed/fell off the face of the earth....and as I work to get myself back on the road, and try to rebuild career momentum, I want to keep you all in the loop, and....engaged.

My ideas #1-5:

1) Join my Facebook Fan Page:

http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/pages/David-Newbould/96531122948?ref=ts

2) Put my TunePak on your Facebook/Myspace/bebo/blog/whatever page, where your friends who AREN'T my fans can see it. This is a big one!:

http://www.reverbnation.com/tunepak/1811657

3) Check out, rate, and comment on videos on my YouTube page. There are home recordings, official videos, live outtakes, and excerpts from my new DVD:

http://www.youtube.com/user/davidnewbouldband

4) Visit the The Long Way Home: David Newbould And Friends Live From Austin page at iTUNES!:

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?id=329183173&s=143441

Direct some friends to it, buy a song or two for $0.99, or the whole 14 song album for only $9.99. And if you already have it, or are poor like me, leave a comment, or (again) post or email the link around for some friends of yours to see.

5) DN GIVEAWAY: Show me you have copied and pasted my ReverbNation Tunepak in 15 places where your friends can see it, or directed 10 people to my iTunes page, or bought The Long Way Home from iTunes yourself, and receive a FREE autographed copy of 2007's Big Red Sun in the mail!

It's that easy. Just help me spread the word, help extend my eFan base, and I will mail you free things.

Email
your evidence to me at
davidnewbould@gmail.com.

Lastly, just write back and tell me what has worked for other bands you know, other songwriters, or what you would like to see me do in order to keep in touch with you more. You have my ear.

For those interested, here are two recent reviews for my recent live CD/DVD release:

AmericanaUK.com

http://www.americana-uk.com/auk/modules.php?op=modload&name=Reviews&file=index&req=showcontent&id=4892 (for full review)

"'It Can Always Be Worse'...haunting harmony vocals coupled with eerie fiddle, piano, lead guitar and old-timey banjo...breaths a splendid world-weariness...hypnotic nature and fabulous interplay... "Dakota" defines praise...this twin release is one set to be revisited more than most..."

Austin Chronicle

"The ambitiousness of this live CD/DVD offering ("The Long Way Home") says as much about David Newbould's well-developed repertoire as it reflects his confident facility with performance. There's nothing tentative or green here; (Newbould) is fully in command of his talents and direction..."

Thank you fans! I hope for more interaction and the dawning of a new era of fan correspondance and engagement.

Best wishes,

David.

10 PM!

A Few Words About Austin:

When I decided in early 2002 that I wanted to leave New York City, I didn't have a destination in mind. I just knew a chapter had come to an end, and wherever I ended up would likely be addition by subtraction. A couple of friends had told me about Austin, I had another friend in Dallas bugging me to come visit him, so I figured alright, I'll go and check this place out, see if I can move my music career over to Texas. I like Stevie Ray Vaughn.

Seven and a half years later, I have had a good run musically here, but the town itself has taken over my heart in a way I never expected. I have no doubt in my soul that I could spend the rest of my life here, raise a family, be happier than if I were to call anywhere else my home. Austinites are a very privileged people. They just don't build Jon Dee Grahams in other cities. Certainly the energy of one's surroundings affect who you are and how you feel, and no matter how many high-rises they build downtown, how many clubs get lost to karaoke frat bars, or how many unnecessary new coffeeshops keep sprouting up (not to mention how many residences vote Starbucks Austin's best cup of coffee?!?), Austin just plain makes me feel good. Comfortable. Home. I never knew it was going to happen, it's a time I'm going to cherish and brag about forever, wherever I go.

Unfortunately, I have to go. I have a new national booking agent, something I could never manage to wrangle out here, and the costs of touring make it very difficult to work out of here if you want to reach as many people and places as I do. I know this, I've been working at it for a long time now. And like just about anywhere, Austin is a difficult place to build a sustainable career without leaving its confines...especially when the outside music world doesn't come here but for those 4 ridiculous days in March. So it is with an optimistic and yet heavy heart that I leave for Nashville, Tennessee at the end of this month - a wonderful place in its own right. And for you Austin, I leave my most unconditional thanks and love, and hopes that one day I might return to your lovely shores and once again call you once home.

Fans and friends of David Newbould!

I am taping a live CD/DVD in Austin, TX next month, and I write to humbly request your help.

The project is being done through central Texas' local music network, ME Television.

ME TV has been doing a series of these packages since last year, and until my project, they have been funded by a group of local investors. Sadly, a couple of weeks ago these independent investors decided not to fund anymore such projects, leaving mine to dissipate in the far reaches of the "what might have been" annals of music history.

Heroically, however, a man of majestic morale named Alan Luecke (one of the heads at ME TV), would not allow the project to fall to the lions, and this great man has put up a budget out of his own pocket to allow the show to go on and be housed, lit, promoted, recorded – preserved for history! This budget will allow for us to stage the show, record it both in audio and HD digital video, and do most of the video post production.

Unfortunately, however, much more money is needed in order for this project to see the light of day. Though I am working tirelessly to raise money through touring, CD sales, and approaching local music businesses about investing, I also want to let you know that I have set up a special PayPal account, at which you are welcome to securely donate any sum you feel.

The PAYPAL DONATION BUTTON is right on my MYSPACE PAGE, under my picture.

This show has been gearing up for the past 6 months to be the apex of my career thus far. It will be a double CD/single DVD package of old and new material, as well as interviews, raw footage, and the rather highly acclaimed video for "See You On The Other Side".

Among the guests who will be appearing are Redd Volkaert, Cindy Cashdollar, Papa Mali, Wendy Colonna, Will Taylor, and a ton of others. The new songs will be mixed for TV, as well as live, for my publishing company to shop for TV/commercial/film placements.

A portion of the event's proceeds and donations will go to The Humane Society of Williamson County, down here in Central Texas. It is up to me, and all of us involved down here, to creatively come up with ways to fund the remainder of this project – audio mixing, mastering, packaging, and equally as important – paying all the musicians! A likely total of $8000-$10,000 beyond what we have is what we need, so every little bit helps! Below is the Billboard Magazine press release for the event.

Here, too, is a link to a recent review of my Big Red Sun CD in Performing Songwriter Magazine.

Thanks much. And please – don't lose sleep if you can't donate.

Believe me, I know how it is!

Sincerely,

David.

David Newbould Assembles All-Star Line-up For Live Film Event

David Newbould, whose songs have appeared on TV shows like "Dawson's Creek" and "Criminal Minds," has an all-star team of musicians set to perform for a live CD/DVD recording August 20th in Austin, Tx. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Humane Society of Williamson County.

Austin, TX (Billboard Publicity Wire) July 29, 2008 -- Critically acclaimed singer/songwriter David Newbould has assembled an all-star lineup of accomplished musicians who have shared the stage with stars such as Merle Haggard, Bob Dylan, and Van Morrison for a live performance to be video-taped in Austin, TX on August 20, 2008 at 7 p.m. at METV Headquarters. A portion of the proceeds from the event will go to the Humane Society of Williamson County.

Newbould, who has had many of his songs appear on major network TV shows such as "Criminal Minds" (CBS), "Dawson's Creek" (WB), and "Monarch Cove" (Lifetime) will be joined on stage by veteran players Redd Volkaert (Merle Haggard), Cindy Cashdollar (Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Asleep At The Wheel), Papa Mali (Ruthie Foster, Miss Lavelle White, the Killer Bees) Wendy Colonna, Rachel Loy, Beth Garner, Will Taylor, Danny Levin, and several others.

Cindy Cashdollar said "The first time I heard David perform his songs, I knew I was hearing something very unique and got hooked immediately. I think it takes a lot for an artist to stand out in a music-oriented city like Austin, let alone a national industry overflowing with a well-worn path of songwriters."

When asked to describe his sound, Newbould, who was recently featured in Performing Songwriter Magazine said "I suppose I like to think of my music being folk, which I describe as writing about people and the world around you." But according the Amarillo Star, "To make things easy, you could call David Newbould's music Americana. But in reality, his tunes reach across genre lines, everything from country and folk to rock and pop."

METV will be taping the performance for a live DVD/CD package. The show will include songs from David's recorded catalogue, as well as some new material. David's entire catalogue is currently available at live shows, iTunes, and all major online music retailers.

While this project is destined to be a major benchmark in David's career, it is only part of a busy 2008 for the Canadian singer-songwriter. He has spent time in Nashville, co-writing with established writers such as Jesse Terry (Masville Publishing), Rachel Loy, and Thad Beatty (Sugarland guitarist). Following his live taping, he will embark on his second of two extensive tours for the year. So far in 2008 he has visited New Mexico, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Ohio, Canada, and made several trips to west Texas.

The year's second half will see him in these terrains, and also in the west coast. He has become a favored regular singer for Will Taylor And Strings Attached, and performs weekend concert series with them whenever possible. As time permits he will continue to record songs written in the year and a half since 2007's Big Red Sun, a process which has already begun with Austin, Texas producer Darwin Smith (David Baerwald, Will Sexton, Aimee Bobruck).

Performing Songwriter - July/August 2008 Issue:

David Newbould
Big Red Sun
Featured Download: "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do" MP3

If Dan Wilson and Pete Yorn had a folkier kid brother, he'd be David Newbould. Wielding a voice as wearily distinctive as Shawn Mullins, Newbould sings every word with a dusty radiance. Though his adeptness with hazy sketches predominates, Newbould blazes brightest when blurring alternate hues of exhaustion and exuberance—a talent especially evident on "Empty Arms" (whose stretched-out phrases evoke Wilson's trademark vocal elasticity), the graceful "Family Man" and rollicking stomper "Nobody Loves Me Like You Do," fueled by Cindy Cashdollar's dobro adrenaline rush. When he sings "I'd rather be a man with a broken dream / than one who never had one" under the title track's simmering desert sheen, he's not kidding. —G. Grande.

Artist's Music Crosses Genre Lines

To make things easy, you could call David Newbould's music Americana. But in reality, his tunes reach across genre lines, everything from country and folk to rock and pop.

The Canadian-born artist grew up with a love for the guitar, becoming a fan of metal and '70s rock. Then he got into Neil Young, the artist that Newbould said first changed his outlook on music.

"That's when I realized the importance of the song and playing guitar in the parameter of the song," he said.

Newbould moved from Toronto to New York in the mid-'90s, where he would spend about seven years honing his craft and developing a fan base. Then in 2002, he left the Big Apple for Austin.

"I've enjoyed living here a lot and music wise, it's had its ups and downs," he said.

Newbould said his ideas of what Austin was musically were off. He said he learned the city has an insulated music culture, one where artists can have fame and success and never leave the city.

Newbould compared that insulation to the Canadian music scene, which was a reason he left. So, he's worked to build a regional fan base with hopes of moving on to a national scene.

Newbould has made an effort to perform in West Texas, the Texas Panhandle and New Mexico, which, along with just living in Texas, has had an impact on his music.

"That terrain really does something to music; it's bizarre," he said. "It's such a visual and the way it feels makes such an impression you can't help but have this Southern, Texan tilt to your music after a while.

"

Newbould is currently touring on his latest release, "Big Red Sun." The album features many of Austin's music legends, including Redd Volkaert and Cindy Cashdollar.

Newbould will perform today at Butler's Martini Lounge. His current tour features him and his bass player.

"(At live shows) you really weed out the people who are there to listen to music and find something they like as opposed to the people who are kind of there to hang out at the bar," he said.

"Really, mostly it's about me singing my songs to people that want to hear them."

Folk Man: You've heard his songs on 'Dawson's Creek'; now hear him in Lubbock

July 10, 2008

The time he spent carving out his identity, this singer songwriter created a nice following of loyal fans.

Born and raised in Canada, David Newbould, whose accent has no trace back to our Northern neighbor, describes his music revolution coming later in life.

"After I decided I wasn't going to be a guitar hero like I wanted, to be like Neil Young. I realized I needed to start writing songs," he said.

"Once I found it, I knew this was for me, and now my craft is constantly evolving."

Newbould said he found his identity and passion for music when he was playing the drums at age 11.

"By the time I turned 15, it was all I cared about," he said.

Leaving his home country to pursue his dream in America, Newbould found a place, New York City.

He had created a loyal fan following performing as a solo artist as well as with a band, and then he relocated to the Lone Star State's music capitol, Austin.

When asked how he describes his music, Newbould said it was difficult to answer.

"For many years I have been trying to figure it out, and how to describe my music," he said. "It is almost asking people to describe themselves. It is difficult. But I like to think of my music being folk, which I describe as writing about people and the world around you."

When Newbould talks about his writing, he said the first five or six years he put a lot of work into it.

"After applying myself and where I was blocking off three to five hours a day to write, it made it comfortable for me," he said. "You try so hard to sound like your heros, but eventually you come out with your own sound."

His own sound has appeared on five network TV shows and DVDs to date, including "Dawson's Creek," Paramount's "Joan of Arcadia," Fox's "Party of Five," CBS "Threshold" and "Lifetime's "Monarch Cove."

Newbould said he feels a level of success for his music to be a part of a network show.

"It is not what I was striving for," he said, modestly. "I am more satisfied to perform a good show and people like it. That is what I do it for."

Newbould said his steady climb to stardom was by making the best music he can and by reaching as many people.

"It really is what you make of it."

Hi Everyone,

I want everybody to know I'm in an online contest with my music. It's at a place called FameCast.com. They have weekly song contests, and the winners with the most votes receive cash prizes to help with their career, reviews in big publications like SPIN, and good things like that. Every year or something, they fly all the highest rated artists to some city for a big showcase, and have big grand prizes for each musical "category" of $10,000. It's real, too - I have 3 very talented friends who have won this. I finally got clued to this site, and already two of my songs are in for the weekly contests due to fan ratings, which is pretty cool.

So I need you all to VOTE! And once per day, starting tonight - Monday - at midnight, until next Monday at midnight. It sounds like a pain in the ass...and maybe it is a little bit...but frankly, whatever I can win is about all I have these days to record new material the way I want to, so you'd be helping out the career. You have to log into the site, but once you do, I promise you there are no unnecessary emails that will clutter up your inbox. I am told that the confirmation email can sometimes take awhile, but once you get it, you're in. Once you're in, you just go to the page, scroll halfway down and find me in the choices...and vote! There are 14 songs per category, so there's an actual shot to come out on top.

I promise I will be a right pain in the ass all week emailing you to vote. If I win, though, I'll find a way to make it worth your while.

Thanks,

Category: Life
Am out in Lubbock, TX right now, having played here last night. Before that, Lawton Oklahoma. Tomorrow night I will be in Odessa. It is great to be able to be doing this almost full time now, and I want to thank to everyone who has helped make it possible.

It's hard as a solo singer/songwriter on the road to find an audience in each town, and tap into those people who will find something in themselves for what you do. I know many of you know this, and I suppose it's all part of the process. I have a new category of shows I'd like to share wth you all, one I'm sure many fellow musicians are familiar with: Soul Killer, Wallet Filler. These are shows where you get paid very well, yet need to stay away from bridges afterwards. I know there are those stuck in cover bands, wedding bands, playing jock sports bars, etc, who are in a category of this all on their own. Then there is the world of the day job, and I won't even go there. I, however, am speaking of the ones where maybe people don't know there's music going on there that night, and were just looking to come in for a drink to catch up with friends, or to mac on chicks, and what they got was a singer/songwriter on tour, and so they...well they just don't give a fuck. Or if they do, they pretend very convincingly not to. On these nights, you get 3 hours of singing your heart out - songs that you have spent a lifetime of craft devotion learning how to write and present - and finish each song to the light din of chatter, the deafening strains of silence, or - in the worse case scenario - rather mild applause. I don't care who you are, when you're up there singing and no-one's listening, any artist worth their salt will feel in those moments that it is they haven't the goods to keep folks interested. They're not drunks neccessarily, or frat boys, they're just...people. And a great performer MAKES people listen, whether they wanted to listen or not. Getting paid to sing your own songs is truly a blessing....but don't you also want to matter? A plumber fixes a sink, gets paid, people then use the sink, but ultimately the thing that matters to the plumber is getting paid. I guess in art we want it all - 2 currencies to be paid in: money AND relevance. You certainly take the relvence to your grave more than the money. And often times....often times you just don't get both. The money is key to keeping it afloat, but relevence is what you got in it for. There are certainly more stable paths to take in life.

I conclude what I have always known - that it's all about looking, finding those people to whom your art matters, and when you do, it makes a whole night worthwhile. A whole life worthwhile. You're not going to matter to everyone, you just need to keep finding those to whom you do. So to those to whom I do, thank you, I am grateful, and you truly are part of what makes me keep doing this.

Something interesting was said to me last night, in an aside. Someone said to me after the show that they could tell I was based in Austin, not Lubbock, and the way they could tell was because I had opinions, that people in these parts didn't have many opinions. I'm certainly no James McMurtry onstage with the opinions. We're talking, like, "Sometimes in east Austin early mornings you see some lonely looking figures walking the streets, and to me it always looks like they're looking for some sort of hope...". She was cool. In fact, everyone who worked at the place was cool. But I walked out feeling, "I'd sure hate to not give a fuck."

I will do this more, I promise. The past 8 months of on and off touring have left me more stories than I've written of (ie. more than zero). I can't rehash too much. This past month has taken me through East Texas, Louisiana, Alabama (you've got the weigh of the union), and here to Nashville, TN. Nashville can be rather humbling. I had 4 writing sessions this week, these people were all so talented I had to really dig to contribute. Quality brainstorming is an art in and of itself, as I had suspected, yet work got accomplished. Rachel Loy and I wrote a beautiful song called "Salvation". Nick Gotten drove all the way over from Knoxville, and we hammered out some good work over a beautiful piece of music he had written for the occasion. James Farrel is so young, and so talented. At his age I had maybe 8 songs. I was artistically draining out by the time we got together, but fortunately he had a home run waiting for us. It was humbling, but that's what we need in life. Thank you James, Nick, Rachel, and Thad, not to mention Beth, Brian, Carrie Jean, Mare, Carl Pike, and Nomad. I will see you all again soon.

"Lake Charles" has my favorite line, "He always said Louisiana was where he felt at home". You have said that many times, and I miss you every day. I am learning how to live as I go.
