electro queso session
allen corneau, phillip jones, heba kadry, and dan workman

New Tracks:
saga of the vacuum tube
merci beat

This session found Dan playing bass and engineer, Heba on nord electro and vocals, allen on bent sk-1, electro bongos, phil on pianet, microKorg, guitar and vocals.   We started the session with "saga of the vacuume tube."  Dan suggested a concept piece begun with a slow build up to cacophany.  Then when all was said and done we added a more rhythmic second part to balance it out.  At the beginning of the song you will notice Dan (on bass) is hung out there alone until the rest of us got the courage or creativity to jump in.  Dan orchestrated the cacophany and break while playing bass and then we all came together for the second part.  Allen found a real cool distict drum beat, Heba played the organ part on the nord (we all could hear some Ray Manzerek coming out),  Phil played the pianet.  After laying down the foundation Heba and Phil decided to add some vocal ideas.  Phil expanding on the vocoder part from the first section and Heba reading an article or descriptive paragraph concerning the vacuum tube amp or compressor (I forget which - sorry) We did a couple takes and Heba wasn't really happy with her part but, put to a vote, it was a keeper.

At the beginning of the session Phil mentioned that some bossa ideas had been floating around in his head and after "saga" Heba said we should endulge them.  What transpired next was "merci beat."  Phil wrote some lyric (with some help from Heba) to a simple melody line and changes.  Then he translated them to Spanish while Heba translated them to French.  In the transition from coming up with the lyrics and communicating the chord changes we had unknowingly played the tune in a key a half step up from the original thought (Phils fault).  This set the stage for some interesting vocal takes, especially the first one when Phil realized the mistake.  Anywho,  check out Dan sweet bass line and Allen's electro congo part.

This session was really fun.  We went in some new directions.  More vocal songs.  everyone had a great time.  I uploaded the pictures from the session to our myspace page in the "electro queso session" album.  The two track on in the player.  Hope you enjoy.

Oh yeah, and after listening to them (by show of hands), who thinks Heba sounds great singing in French?

phoenix from fire session
new track:
Homer I

ok, so we came together after a long break.  We met for some food @ cafe brasil.  Discussed the middle east situation, evil government, etc.  Then adjured to Dan's office @ Sugarhill Recording Studio (www.sugarhillstudios.com).

I have to admit the session started off on a bunch of bad notes (literally)  Heba forgot the power cable to the nord, Phil was trying to tell Allen how to play the drums,  Dan was coming off a creative void that lasted almost a fortnight (we learned at the end of the session that he was at the point of quiting sk-1)

The session is named "Phoenix from Fire" because, on top of the above mentioned problems, the first hour or so of the session was chernoble, a complete disaster.   The music wasn't working.  It was looking like the first session not to bear any fruit, which wouldn't be bad odds considering we have had about 18 sessions.  1 dud out of 18 isn't bad.  I knew it was going bad when I saw Dan checking his e-mail.  Can you say dick move?

So after beating a dead horse for an hour or so, Heba suggested that we scrap it and move on (great idea Heba!)

"Homer I" started out as a cool AB groove until Heba said she wanted to lay down some vocals.  What followed was a avalanche of creativity, expression, fraternity and music cohesion.  We looked around the room for a book to draw lyric ideas from and Phil grabbed Homers' Odyssey, hence the name Homer I.  While flipping through the pages we all took our turn with a confident "STOP."  Heba started with a dreamy, reverb-y vocal followed by Allen and his take on a lounge singer.  Next Phil rocked his page with an angry rap style and finally Dan with the intensity of a old school beat poet.

The first vocal take was a keeper for all, and it was also the first time reading through the page as well.  The idea on all participating in the vocals was similar to a Gangster making every member of the crew take part in a crime.  There are no innocent parties in this session.

Phil played bass and microKorg, Allen played bent sk-1 drums, Heba a straight sk-1 through an assortment of effects, and Dan played the same.

"Homer I" was the phoenix that rose from the first and ashes of a shitty session.  It was a great time making great music with great people.  Rejuvinating the sk-1 project and taking us in a new direction once again.

I will post the track with only Heba and Allens' vocal tracks until I get a version with the addition of Dan and Phil.  For more pics of this session go to www.sk1project.com/phoenix

tres piedras
lazy sunday afternoon

I would like to personalize the blog for tres piedras by including a
quote from everyone involved, if possible.
dan-
A general absence of estrogen caused three rocks to coalesce in the SK-1 lab.  Fuzzy basses and clanky guitars abound.  Funny that our resident rock climber (Allen) deemed his melodic contribution to be unworthy.  He did, however, punch the button on a solid skgroove.  Dan=fuzzy bass, drone K-1.  Phil=guitar.
phil-
we assembled together, these three muskateers.
met 5 til 9.
created two tracks without any dears,
and all had a wonderful time.

allen -
"Although one member short, we worked out two juicy new tunes.  Phil brought to the table a couple of new sonic elements; the pianette and some madd guitar skilz. Dan pulled double-duty rocking the SK-1 and the bass. I tried to fill Heba's shoes with some keyboard foundation on  "SundayAfternoon" but couldn't find my niche for "Tres Piedras".

All in all, we had fun (as usual), and that's the whole point, right?!?"

There ya go, Phil.

sut beriously session

Friday March 30th 2007  6 - 10pm
Allen, Dan, Heba, and Phil
Sugarhill Recording Studios

New Tracks:
Sut Beriously
Siberiously
Random 80's

We met @ Barnaby's for a bite.  Then to Dan's office @ Sugarhill to make some music.  We started off with Random 80's.  Then the brainstorm of Sut Beriously turned into the more refined Siberiously.  There were no pics taken during the session however I believe Heba has a phone pic of phil holding a keytar @ cafe brasil (courtesy of Ian Varley and Proud Anselmo).

We miss Leigh, but not to Allens discredit.  Allen is a great drummer.  Check out the drum solo in Siberiously.  I mean, Beriously.  Heba is rockin' in G as always.  Dan continues to bring the bass skills (Random 80's), along with his usual arsenal of musical tools.  Phil has recently started using a MicroKorg (thanks  Kiley).  The Micro has some really great bass sounds (used for bass on Siberiously).  Heba used only the Juno this session, naturally it was attatched to the KAOS pad.

This was a really great session, however putting the synth overdubs on Siberiously at the end of the session began to get exhausting.   I posted Siberiously to our space today.  enjoy.

We miss you Leigh.  So Allen is playing some drums now.  We have been trying to get him to dress in a Leigh costume so we keep the same two girls two guys dynamic.  You know, for appearance sake.  I don't think he's into it.

If you live in Houston come out early on Thursday March 22nd to Notsuoh.  We go on @ 8:30 for a 45 min set.

X-Mas Session

who: Dan, Leigh, and Phil
when: Friday, Dec. 23, 2006  2:00pm - 5:00pm
where: Sugarhill Recording Studios

New Tracks
Spagetti Western
Sauce
Tickle Boot

I guess Holiday Session would be the PC title for this Session but X-mas Session was on the letter prompting the encounter,  so X-Mas Session it is.
This is the first session since Heba left for a two month sabatical in her motherland. of Egypt  (We miss you Heba).  The instrumentation was Minimoog, sk-1, Le Nerd (or L' Nerd- I forget which it is), guitar, some bass on Tickle Boots, and a string patch.  This session was very free form and flowing. We started out free form brainstorm- which is Sauce.   We focused the energy into a more refined Spagetti Western.  Then finished off with another free form brainstorm the 18 minute bass (phil), sk-1 (iceburner), keys (dan) track entitled Tickle Boots.  I am posting Spagetti Western.

I will attempt to speak for the group (an endevour historically punctuated with contempt).  It was unusual playing without Heba.  This is the first Session with the  combination of Dan, Leigh and Phil.  Look forward to different and interesting arrangements/ compositions as this ensemble becomes more comfortable.  Heba left big shoes that no one can fill so we have to find something new and unique until she returns in Feb.  On the other hand, these tracks will be re-released in the future with addtion parts played by Heba.  She has a M-Box and sk-1.

There were no pics.

Robot Sunrise& Nossa Bova

Heba got on a plane to the middle east today. These tracks for her travels.  Robot Sunrise came from a Heba and Phil Session.  One of the first sk-1 project recordings from Sugarhill.  And Nossa Bova was recorded with heba, phil and kiley.  Heba originally named the song "I'm Not your Bitch,"  which was latter changed to the polically correct "Nossa Bova"
