WHAT'S HOT

Adrianne Frost - A Breakup Tale in So Many Parts
Part 5: 7 days, 18 hours, 12 minutes since you left

Today I was thinking on the train, which I try not to do these days, because folks stare when I cry, How can you just "move on" after 10 years?!!? How does that work?
"Well, that's done."
Like pulling a tooth.

Carolina Smart Random Things You Should Know about me.

I thought it was high time I shared some random things you should know about me. If you know me you probably already know these things. If you know me and you don't know these things, shame on you. If you don't know me. 'Hi, I'm Carolina who the hell are you?

My Obsessions - 1930's - I am obsessed with the era of the 1930's. This isn't a new obsession, I've been obsessed since I was a child. I find something magical about that era. I've been revisiting all of this through movies. We are getting a free preview right now of Turner Classic Movies and the channel is chalk full of movies from the 1930's.

Viki Ackland Frail Ego of Man

As any of you who have been following the mud slinging by Donald Trump in the direction of Rosie O'Donnell over her making fun of him on the VIEW, you can clearly see how even someone who claims to be intelligent and has wealth is still just an insecure little boy when poked fun at. And how do insecure little boys retaliate?

Guest Bytch - Superman by Liana K Superman - is one of my favorite comic book characters. That seems passé to many people, and this is the topic of my guest bytch.

"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye." Miss Piggy.

Anna's Bytch - Neighbors from Hell - Once again I come to you slightly confused, oddly entertained and certainly irritated. I have often asked myself what it is that I am projecting that attracts every single crackpot within a fifty mile radius, but so far I have been unsuccessful in pinning it down.

Carolina's Bytch - The Invisible Woman - The running joke between V and I is that we are invisible. I use to think it was just that, a joke, but these last two weeks have me thinking otherwise. Lets do a little review shall we:

Pixie Says - Underneath the Glitter, Im Still a Jew - Before I was a pixie, before I was a feminist, almost before I was me, I had two identities: female and Jewish. I was born into them and, not having acquired the power of speech, I couldnt argue my way out of them. For a while.

Viki Ackland - Going Backwards - I have always been in a state of disbelief over the affairs of the world. Where most people can go through life in their own square world where happiness is defined merely by their content existence, I have found myself feeling troubled and filled with despair for as long as I can recall. So I carry on, write poetry, stay well informed, live in fear.

NEW THIS WEEK

"I have learned over the years that when one's mind is made up, this diminishes fear; knowing what must be done does away with fear." Rosa Parks.

Anna's Bytch - What A Pisser - Ladies and Gentlemen, I come to you today sweaty, disgusted and very amused. After fourteen years of fighting it I am finally embracing my lot as a full blown Torontonian, and I have the public transit system of this city to thank for it

Carolina's Bytch - -Heatwave and There Goes the Neighborhood - I'll admit it, Im uncomfortable right now and I'm hot, sweaty and trying to not get cranky. I made a promise to myself that I wouldn't complain about the heat, and I'm not, really, Im not.

Caroline Blaha-Black - -You - You'd be surprised just how many people actually DO have a problem with this statement. Why? I guess some people just cannot get it through their thick skulls that somebody exists who doesn't want to add to an ever-growing population on Earth.

Cindyloohoo - Lately I have become convinced that I have a mental defect which makes me incapable of being happy. Every time I make a lifestyle change which results in my being happier, more peaceful and serene, I live it for a period, sometimes months, then manage to disregard it and go back to my old ways of living.

Lauren Ella - No More Cookies - Brace yourselves. Im about to tell you something so shocking, so strange, so devious that it will surely change your lives forever. Riots will occur. Tears will be shed. Hearts will be broken. Actually, since Australias about ten years behind every other country in the world Im sure youve already heard the news: Cookie Monster is no longer allowed to eat cookies.

Viki Ackland - The one sided- argument - Another long day and I am painstakingly making my way home. It seemed like a normal day with not much going on, until a very drunk man boarded the subway and loudly told everyone around him that he was "away and was back now and if they had any questions to call his secretary." Two young girls giggled into their hands, and he winked.

NEW for JULY 10, 2006

Stories from our Black Books - Vaughn - I was in a bar and walking from the bathroom back to my friends when someone grabbed my arm. He told me he "knew me" and I thought it was some lame pick- up line.

Carolina's Bytch - Things that are annoying me this week!!!! - What's that saying 'Don't let the little things get you down.' Those are the things that annoy me most!!!

Dawn Farrell - Girls are Bytches - Sometimes I wish I could be a man because I get sick of being bytchy and dealing with bytches.

Lauren Ella - The Pitfalls of Music History - When I was driving home yesterday I felt a very strong urge to veer into the oncoming traffic. Why? Because three of my five most hated songs of all time were played in succession on the radio.

Viki Ackland - Transit Can - I possible rant enough about the transit in Toronto? Apparently not. I would like to interject now and say I am open minded and to each their own, but again I cannot do that. I am a transit snob, and proud of it.

Guest Bytch - Coming Out as Whitey by Sandra Alland - During a public art piece last fall, Darren O'Donnell asked me, "What's your race?" I replied, "As far as I know Scottish, Dutch, and French Canadian." O'Donnell persisted, "But what's your race?" I thought he wanted me to say "white," which would have been true, though far less specific.

This weeks Bytch Shrine Zelda Fitzgerald would be 106 on July 24th had she continued to live on. She would have continued to dance, paint and write as she should have. That didnt happen of course, instead Zelda died at the age of 48 heartbroken and alone as the man who promised to be hers for all eternity had died eight years earlier and in the arms of another woman.

Have someone in mind that should be enshrined? Email us with your candidate!

"Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were. But without it we go nowhere." Carl Sagan.

Carolina's Bytch - Mr. Personality - Step right up folks! Thats right, step right up! Get in real close! You dont want to miss it! Introducing, the one... the only... MR. PERSONALITY! This would be the point in the program where Mr. Personality comes out to the stage and then you hear the crickets sing.

Caroline Blaha-Black - Birth-Place - It feels good to return to the place in which you were born once in a while, if it's in 10 miles away or across the ocean. You don't even have to call that place home because after all, home is where the heart is, right? There's just something magical about the place that you were born at.

Lauren Ella - Vomit Baby - Every afternoon at approximately 3pm, I find myself standing in the coffee shop anxiously waiting for my Iced Latte` to be delivered into my greedy hands.

Viki Ackland - Chess in the crack park - we walk by this park often, knowing we do not belong,

Hi everyone!

I think we can all agree that Indie books kick ass. Especially indie books about evil henchmen, philandering dogs, situationist humour, and survivalist restaurants.

You can read about all of these topics and more at the opening party for NANO~NANO, an exhibition of bookworks made by the students of my recent OCAD course, "Nano-publishing: Independent Publications"

Their books celebrate the indie spirit, challenge ideas about "The Book" and come with free beer (while supplies last. only available on June 21 from 6 til 8 p.m.)

NANO~NANO is on display at TYPE Books, the wickedest little indie bookstore and alternative exhibition space in town, from 20 June til 23 July 2006. The opening party is on Wednesday, 21 June from 6 til 8 p.m. There'll be food, drink and SUPER-RAD handmade indie books!

TYPE is at 883 Queen West, across from Trinity Bellwoods park and beside the Japanese Paper Place.

This beautiful poster was designed by Alison Gledhill. Pretty huh?

You can check out a wee article about the work on www.torontoist.com or tune in to hear me yap about it on the CBC Radio 1 programme "Here and Now" this Wednesday, 21 June sometime between 3 and 3:15 p.m.

Hope to see you on Wednesday night!

Shannon Gerard.
