hey everyone, just realized that i haven't posted anything about our last two shows. both of which have been at that mecca of SF underground music, the beale street bar. both shows went well (thanks to dave from psychokitty and rochelle from butcher for having us on each respective bill)....playing the most recent one made me really miss playing in scarab regularly and hanging out with the scarab crew. before sentimental music starts to play, things get maudlin and i need a box of tissues, i will say that we will be playing again in december. probably closer to the end of december when i make my way up to the bay. in case you guys care there it is....and as of yet i have not burned in the hellfires of socal!! (at least in part because i live in a desert and it's hard to burn sand and rock). if you're keeping score at home that's desert 1 fire 0. viva scarab!! peace. russ

In keeping with this tradition of reviewing almost every show we play, here it is. The scene: Tuesday night at El Rincon in SF, one of our favorite venues to play. Despite the lack of a sizable audience, this show featured some good bands. Pacuzo kicked off the night with an energetic set of no-wave/post-punk influenced rawk. I really dug what they were doing, especially with the horns and angular rhythms, I hope we play with them again some day. Psychokitty was up next. They played an exceptionally tight set of rock songs that at times reminded me of early Girls Against Boys.
Scarab hit the stage last. I'm glad the bands stuck around because that was essentially the remnants of the audience, in addition to our loyal Scarabitos (Tetsu, Ken, and Trish da T-bone). We played one of the tightest sets we've played in a while. Maybe due in part to the fact that Felipe hasn't touched his drum set and Mel her electric guitar in more than 2 weeks (we've been practicing solely for the acoustic shows). All in all, we sounded good. We should start practicing even less.
All the bands were nice people and fun to talk to. The good thing about being "underground" type bands is that most bands are out to support the others since money often isn't even part of the equation. Speaking of money....haha...please support the United Scarab Fund by purchasing a cd from us....$5+shipping (if you need it mailed). Email us at scarab_the_band@yahoo.com and Mel will be in touch with you about getting one. Thanx. Our next show is Sat. Aug. 18 at Ireland's 32 in SF. It'll be an acoustic show.
See ya in the ether. uncle russ

As promised a while back, here are lyrics to 3 of our songs:
That Which Breaks to Pieces
They come from the West once more Seeking riches from our shore With minds fixed on greed and lust Intentions not to trust This land has tasted blood for so long For ages passed the infidels have come
We'll die to keep the land that's our Sands will drift but not for us
We'll fight to save what God has deemed the truth Honor saves the lives that we lose Though skies rain fire and mountains will fall When they will perish we will hear His call.
When sands will settle one truth will remain This land is ours forged in centuries of pain.
¡This Is My Crime!
Sin pensa en el futura Entrando en un nuevo mundo Nunca pense descubrir Que no puede dejarte ir
Enfrentar muerte segura Luchar mi unica opcion Por una ilusion valedora Que deje huella en la tierra
(interlude in English) Illegal immigration with a fake ID Riding on a van Nobody to see Escape from the law to fulfill a dream Send my money home Support their needs This is my crime! This is my crime!
Y no my voy a dejar Sin antes decirte a ti....¡Lucha!
Speed II Stop
You can't wait To get ahead Show yr speed Display yr strength Born with the instinct Tear off the line Race to the redlight Waste no time
(chorus) Show me up Leave me in your dust (2x)
Time won't wait Cut me off You mindless fuck Be the death of us all Life in the fast lane Leaves wreckage behind Come to yr senses Yr still trapped in line.
(chorus)

What's up everyone. We played our first ever "acoustic" show on Saturday in Campbell, CA. I think overall it went alright....we probably could tighten up the sound a little but not terrible. Most of the crowd at Orchard Valley Coffee was either in a coma or busy on their laptops downloading tips on growing petunias from the Better Homes and Gardens website. They might have been playing Donkey Kong....or one of those newfangled "video games" the kids play nowadays. The funny thing is that some people came in to watch us because they heard a song that interested them. However, the second we played a new song, they got up and left. Perhaps they were simply waiting for their non-fat extra hot light foam latte to be made.
Anyway for those of you who care to know, I will be moving to Riverside, CA at the beginning of September to attend grad school at UC-Riverside in Ethnomusicology. As a result of this selfishness in my academic endeavors, you all will have to suffer the fate of not having as many Scarab performances. We intend to continue to play when we can, however shows may be few and far between (probably revolving around when I can make it up to the Bay Area). Scarab will also continue on as a recording project so as to further our quest for world domination (hey who can fault us for this dream...we live in America right?)
Our next show is this Tuesday Aug. 7 at El Rincon in the SF Mission. There aren't many show's left so come out if yr not doing anything. By the way, the Corpse Flower is about to bloom.
see ya in the bottomless pit. russ

What's up everyone,
It was a busy weekend for us. We played 2 shows in the city, one on Saturday night at Brainwash Cafe and the other on Sunday night at Ireland's 32.
It's always nice to play at Brainwash, although the stage area tends to be a very tight fit for us. Something about playing a show with washers and dryers and people doing their laundry is invigorating for me somehow. The show went well, at least for us. I showed up at about 9pm and caught a couple of songs by the Deadly Surfinatics, who sounded good. However, I hadn't eaten since I figured I'd be getting a free meal at Brainwash and by the time I showed up the kitchen had closed. Anyway, we took off to get burritos in the Mission.
When I returned, the place was raided by blond party girls. Apparently the second band, Kinetix, is from Denver and apparently brought that city's entire blond party girl population. I don't have anything against blond girls but these girls definitely fit the vacuous dimwitted blond stereotype. We figured that these girls would not be staying long once we took the stage since we had a similar blond exodus at one of our other shows. Mel, Mark and I all took bets on how many songs it would take to drive them out. The answer: zero. They left long before we even started. Anyway, it was great to see some of my co-workers (and former co-workers) from ABC School come to the show. I think we played pretty well for them....as they made up almost all of the remaining audience. My co-worker Edith concluded our set with rousing renditions of "Row Your Boat" and "Put Your Finger In the Air". She's new to guitar playing so I figured we should give her an audience.
On Sunday night we played at Irelands. Turbo Justice and the Rockinauts kicked off the night with some rock from the nether regions of the universe. Their drummer wanted to take his shirt off but the owner of the bar, Brendan kindly told him to put it back on. By the way, Brendan's a really cool guy. I don't think he has many loud rock bands at his place but he let us play anyway. We were up next, technical problems with Mel's guitar pedals ensued. After cutting out during the first 2 songs she ended up playing the rest of the show sans effects pedals. Just raw fuckin Marshall amp distortion. Furthermore, apparently one of our vocal mics was barely audible. Despite this pile of shit heaped upon us, I feel our set was pretty good. Chola, with a new drummer, ended the night with a strong set.
Thanks to everyone who came to the shows, especially to Ken and Trish (who came to both). Our cd, "In Difference" is out and we will be playing again on July 13 at Kimo's and July 14 at the Stork Club to hopefully sell 4 more copies of it.
See you guys at the next couple of shows. Buy a cd from us....It's only $5!!!! (plus shipping if you want it snail mail) If you want one, email us at scarab_the_band@yahoo.com Russ

Wasssup everyone. Well, we finally have our cd out, it's entitled "In Difference". We named it that because that seems to be a comment we get when people hear us play....."Oh you're one of those 'different' bands". Maybe people are politely saying...."Oh yeah, you fuckin suck"....which I'd rather they say. Anyway, we're celebrating our "difference" and selling our new cd at the following shows this weekend:
Saturday 6/30/2007 9:00 PM - Brainwash Cafe 1122 Folsom St. @7th San Francisco, California Scarab, Kinetix, The Deadly Surfinatics FREE! Sunday 7/01/2007 08:00 PM - Ireland's 32 3920 Geary Blvd at 3rd Ave San Francisco, California Scarab, Chola, Turbo Justice and the Rockinauts $3
