September 1, 2009 and I’m feeling pretty good about things. I’m started my small college tour, at SUNY New Paltz and the students there were great. Very rarely do I get to a show 45 minutes early and the room is already full of patiently waiting people ready to laugh. It was quite odd. But we had a lot of fun.

The only thing that freaked me out was the assistant dean was in the crowd. She told me “Act like I’m not here.” Which in my mind said, “Act like I’m here and if you say something I don’t like I’ll report you to whoever I have to report to! And then I’ll have you arrested creepo!” None of that was true but I felt it. Though I think she thought I was little bit of a creep when I found out they booked me a hotel 20 minutes away from campus. I mean like getting on the TOLL highway, then getting off again. I may not be an “official” pedophile. But you can’t help but feel like one.

Wait a minute is the sarcasm coming off right in this writing? Does it sound serious? I’m not. Seriously. It was a great gig.

Also I’m feeling good about the two skits we put out that have gotten on the front pages of Myspace and Funny or Die. I’m trying to crack that Youtube puzzle. If anyone knows how to get on the front page there let me know!

I got a few fun and small shows happening this month that I hope you can be around for. Fireflies in ..Alexandria, VA and Austin Grill in Baltimore are some great small stages where I can really flip out and have some fun.

Here’s a quick hit list of things I have opinions on in the pop culture:

True Blood: I love shows that are serial and keep going. And I like a lot of the characters. And whenever the story gets slow, gratuitous sex scenes. It’s great.

Inglorious Bastards: Great movie. Great Hero. Great Villian. Like I loved the how cool the good guy was and loved how annoying evil the villain was. On the flip side I was wondering if a Slave version of this movie were ever made if it would get a good response. Like the Nat Turner Bastards. I would have to say no. But great movie.

Hurt Locker: I know it’s not POP culture movie. It’s an indy. Its great. Please see it.

Daily Show: The episode a couple of weeks ago when John Stewart interviewed Betsy McCaughey who was a leading voice against health reform, before she got fired for having one the worst debates ever. John ate her up bad. Like really bad. So bad I almost wanted Bill O’Reilly to come on just so it would be a fair fight. Their fights are good.

Football Season: I backed out of a fantasy football league last minute. I just didn’t think I had the emotional commitment that these people have. I mean I never see these people happy or content. Nothing but stress. And I like football. But I don’t want to obligate every 10 hours every Sunday. I get sleepy drinking beer THAT long. Though I will be jumping on the band wagon of any team in the playoffs that has a black quarterback, which will probably be the Eagles. They got TWO!

One time I asked one of favorite comedians, Patrice O'neal if he ever read the reviews for his amazing show at Just For Laughs Comedy festival. He smiled and said, "For what? I can't do nothing about it. I did what I did onstage. What can reviewers say what I don't already know."

I might be messing up his words, but you get the general idea. Don't read reviews. But I don't know many people who can help it right? I mean I want to know what people really think. I mean on one hand there isn't anything I can do about it and I know what I can do onstage. But the other hand who hates being given compliments?

So for this summer run of shows I'm doing I've been getting a lot of love from reviewers, and of course I read them, I didn't want to. But I did. That being said you should read them too!

Washington City Paper
quote: ..."nothing short than a master class in comic timing.."

DC theatre scene
"...all of Smith’s editorials eventually devolved into tirades or emotional breakdowns about the character’s impending breakup, which would have inspired pity if they hadn’t cracked me up so damn much."

It's been while since I hit ya'll so let me tell you what's going on: 1. Since last summer I've been trying a bunch of interesting things. First there was Sierra Mist who decided that I was kind of funny and let me do a skit for them called Pimpin Referee, which is on my page. It was all just a crazy experience going from amatuer filmmaker with my friends to working with professionals and having to deal with terms like "budget" and "advisor" and "deadlines". It was crazy the contrast of professionalism to deal with such a silly thing as a skit. For example: I kept having all these professional people having conference calls with me and they would sound serious when they said: "So Seaton have the insurance contracts been signed in reference to Pimpin Referee?" I giggled a little bit everytime. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=59549771 2. Another cool thing was that I was able to shoot my first season of my webseries Annoy Charlie Smith Inc. It was a long process taking about a year and a half, and so far I've gotten nothing but positive reviews. It's weird and crazy, but fun to watch at work. youtube.com/annoycharliesmith 3. And then this Summer I have a couple of Washington DC Fringe Festival shows that I'm doing. They are both exciting and interesting and they stretch me in different ways. The Sin Show- Seven story tellers all tell one story about commiting on the seven deadly sins. My story is about Envy. And it's sad. If you're not in DC then I'll have to post it. http://www.pitchengine.com/speakeasydc/speakeasydc-presents-the-sin-show-in-capital-fringe-fest-2009/15352/ Slow News Day- It's a crazy abitious project where we improv a news show. I play the editorialist, where I rant on anything I can. It's crazy fun! http://www.4and9productions.com/events.html 4. I plan to sleep a lot in August. Unless something else interesting happens. I'm telling jokes at a wedding, which had all the makings of a painful experience. But man it could be fun. I'll tell you all about it though. Peace. ps. new skit
