The boss of the Favela looked as if he had murdered 1000 people, and I'm sure that number isn't too far off. The poorest of poor people in the world. It is its own little world in there. I've never seen anything like it. Very sad. Nothing romantic about it. But the children were wonderful. they all had the biggest smiles on their faces.
I was a bit nervous when a man started getting loud with me, when he found out that I didn't speak fluent Portuguese. So i left his presents immidiatly. I could tell that he was on drugs ...and the drugs were on him.
I spoke to a man of 21 years, who he lived with his 8 brothers, 1 sister, his mother and and his father, in a very small favela shack, made of bricks and wood. Ricardo was a student, who was very interested in speaking his broken English with me... and I, with my very broken Portuguese... We met somewhere in a compromising land of a middle language (for lack of a better term.) We managed to comunicate and understand each other. He had all sorts of questions for me, and I had all sorts of questions for him. He seemed to have a good head on his shoulders, considering, he lives his life in a Favela, filled with drugs, violence, and murder.
I would dare not ever ever walk alone in there..
I've always had a curiosity of what life is like inside the Favela, and now after spending 2 days visiualizing... I can see that life is not fair for many.
It puts things into perspective for me. A good reality check is refreshing every now and again.

I have noticed that when in New Zealand, if you ask for a napkin while you are eating, you will most likely be laughed at.

I have noticed that when in Brazil, none of the buildings have fire excapes on the exterior. It took me a long time to figure out what looked different about them.

I have noticed that when in French Polynesia, if you paddle out to Hapiti everyday for two weeks strait, your back can increase 1 shirt size.

I have noticed that when in Australia, you pay the rent for your flat weekly, not monthly.

I have noticed that when in Mexico, it's not a good idea to go camping in southern Baja during hurricane season.

I have noticed that when in Hawaii, Pipeline is much scarier than it looks on TV.

I have noticed that when in California, it's a nice place to come home to.

I have noticed that when in Rome, do as the Romans do.
