Category: Dreams and the Supernatural
This is meant to a summary of the latest news, but I don't know where to start from. Oh well, let's begin with the some upcoming releases: DISCO FOR THE DEVIL: REMIXES 12" - Bearfunk BFK042 - Out 09 Nov 2009In Flagranti, Faze Action, Telonious and Sare Havlicek really took the track to a different level. Included in the 12" a previously unreleased extended mix of the original version. SPACE REMIXESa compilation cd with reworks of Space classics (I did remixes of Carry On Turn Me On, Tango In Space and a re-edit of Mixed Up). There is also a 12" with different mixes of Carry On Turn Me On (including my own) The Space Remixes Volume 1 - Nang Records - NANG014 - Out 23 Nov 2009 Space: Carry On Turn Me On 12" - Tirk Records - TIRK049 - Out 09 Nov 2009
What else... a bunch of interview and reviews of the Horror Disco cd, which BTW is being repressed as we speak! So hold on to that first edition cd. It might as well become a collector's item since the new edition is going to have a different design and a clear cd case (as opposed to the first edition that came in a solid black case) Also let's not forget about the MAGICK EDIT ALLSTARS #008 that I recently had the honor of putting together Reviews & InterviewsReview on Urlaubshits (United Kingdom)Review on Pitchfork (United States)Interview on Half Stereo (Istanbul)Interview on Disco Demolition (United States)New mixes!
A mid-tempo post-tour mix, called Melatonin Fix Mixand an up-tempo quirky disco set called Disco For The Family OK this should be enough to keep you busy for a while! Ciao!

I'm rushing out of the hotel to go play at D-EDGE here in São Paulo, Brazil. Here is an interview I did with them a few days ago (Portoguese version) (English Version here): *Interview by Monique Oliveira - D-Edge* "No Static" has come out with really good critics - and it's, indeed, very good. Do you think italo-inspired songs have found their place lately? No Static was actually my first attempt at doing an italo-inspired track. It came after a friend of mine gave me some old underground italo records that he never really liked. I appreciated the naiveness of the italo productions. Heard today, they sound like very innocent, simply produced tracks. Basically the exact opposite of contemporary Italian pop, who is overproduced, clogged with pretentiousness.
Also I think there that there are at least two types of Italo disco. There is the most successful type, that made it to the charts back then and that was based upon cheesy vocals, pop-song structures and was delivered to the people via television, lip-synced sometimes by dancers or models (not the original artist). That music we still have now as "revival". But if you talk to club djs from the era, they will tell you that it was considered bad, commercial music and good djs wouldn't mess with it.
Then there was the more underground italo, that never made it out of the club or local radio. That was often more instrumental, nerdy, space-disco inspired and printed in a smaller amounts.
Nowadays there are rather different styles of neo-italo productions. There is a post-French house approach, with heavy 80s arrangements, synth stabs, punchy beats and crunched bass. Then there is the more disco inspired one, more airy, spatial, and possibly more melodic.
So really the "italo" word can really mean many things and people use it to mean different features of allegedly italian sounding music. To me italo is more an approach towards production rather than a sound itself. Sometime people have told me that italo makes you dance move in a different way. I'm not sure of it, but I find the idea fascinating.
Being born in the 70's in Venice has had any influence in your sound?
For the record, I was born in Padova Italy, which is very near Venice but of course very different. I believe most young musicians in Venice are influenced by the local reggae scene, which is really the only scene there is in Venice. Myself I was playing keyboards in funk and acid jazz band when I was a teenager, most of the band members where older and more experienced than me so I learned a lot from them. When I was 14 I started experimenting with computer music, at first with the Commodore Amiga and it's glorious 4-track step sequencer software called Soundtracker. Later the drummer of one of the band I played with open a studio and I got to use it for free. I recorded a 4 track EP, it's was mostly jazz-infused drum'n'bass. It was my first production. A couple of years later I had my first release with Italian label Irma Records. It was mainly a cocktail music track, except it had a vocoder voice saying "good morning sunshine". That was 10 years ago.
What is the vocal rule in your music?
Vocal rule? I almost never have vocals. That's just because I like to do most things by myself, synths, guitar, bass... but I can't sing. However I'm very proud of the collaboration with Douglas Meakin, he truly is a legend to me since he was singing many tv themes from my childhood. Later I discovered he was also involved in some of the best Italian disco records from the late 70s and early 80s, with Claudio Simonetti. I've also recorded an album with Swiss-Ghanese vocalist Joy Frempong, it's called Tinpong. It's very different from my solo production and Joy sings (or raps or yells) in all the tracks.
I read in your interview about the the value of "serendipity" - ability to make valuable discoveries by accident- in dance music. How that combination works out in "Horror Disco? In theory it's rather simple: when making music, mistakes or unintentional discoveries happen all the time. And sometimes they can be better than one's original idea. As producer you may know all the tricks and techniques to make a track sound right, but sometime you can get bored with yourself. So it's very important to detect and keep the good accidental things when they pop up. It works often for me, although not always. Obviously you can't control it.
Working with old, unstable synthesizers is usually a guarantee that you'll end up with sounds you wouldn't expect. For instance the fast arpeggiator-like sound that is basically the back spine of the Horror Disco track, I forget how I made it. I recorded it many weeks before arranging the actual track. I tried to replicate it later on, but I was never able to - not even close. But sometimes the Farfisa stops working properly and spits out strange noises. I guess that's how it happened. I have been listening to "Disco Aesthetics", and yes, some samples do sound like horror voices, together with a very upbeat atmosphere. Is it what disco aesthetics is about?Well that mix is quite simply an attempt to blend contemporary productions with tracks made 25 or 30 years ago. And sometimes it's very difficult to tell what the old ones are.
In my personal opinion I think this happens not because contemporary disco is merely trying to replicate old records. On the contrary, both the old school and the new school producers are musicians that are pursuing a futuristic sound. And true futuristic visions are never met by the advance of art and technology, they forever hang in an world of utopia. Good disco still sounds modern now. Modern music is something what we can blend in our everyday life without nostalgia or the pretentiousness of it being the newest thing ever. As a musician you can only achieve this when you stop questioning yourself whether what you are doing sounds new enough (or old enough). Being new, cutting edge, is usually a priority for many music producers. But that's usually an empty concept, without musical substance. They might use this or that sound because they heard it in a recent record that was somewhat successful. That is really a narrow horizon, I think it's more interesting to listen to the music done many years ago with the ears we have today.
Also, whereas most dance music is focusing mailing on the beats and power, disco relies on melodic elements as well as on rhythm. I think that's one of the main reason of the timelessness of disco. It's music that can appeal both to the brain and the belly.

Interview by Joel Wright http://www.viceland.com/music/2009/07/bottins-horror-disco/
Un esauriente articolo (in Italiano) di Enver http://www.italianembassy.it/?p=1986
The Horror Disco album has been postponed due to manufacturing delays. The cd will be in shops on August 10th. The digital release is already in every decent online store (*) (*) [QUOTE] This information is for those of you who've decided that people who have chosen to make music for a living - rather than making cakes or shoes or selling weapons or teaching yoga - are still entitled to some kind of financial reward for what they do and so who haven't already downloaded it from some Russian bloodsucker or collector nerd with a blog masquerading as a "fan who's just helping to promote the music they love, man" your reward is a lovely tin plastic box with my name on it and the ability to sleep at night. I, and much more importantly all the producers and labels who struggle to survive in what are frankly difficult times, salute you! [UNQUOTE] -- Ewan Pearson
