Current mood:  accomplished

A candidate for president should not be judged by the color of his skin.

And to - and to anyone who thinks differently, I say, please do not reject John McCain just because he's white. I think the recent news from Wall Street has made us all less tolerant, and only reinforced the stereotype that white people are shiftless, thieving welfare queens.

Now, take a look at these pictures. Here are the CEO's of Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG and the Lehman Brothers. I know the first thing that jumps out about these faces is they all happen to be white, and they all happen to be responsible for stealing. But, what you have to understand is that these whites are a product of a society that made them that way.

It was the neighborhoods and the schools they went to: Harvard, Yale, the Wharton School of Business.

They never learned the value of doing real, actual work. And the first step to fixing that is better role models so kids growing up white today don't think the only way out of Westchester is corporate crime.

Or a government handout. Or sailing.

So, I get it. The temptation is to look at McCain and vote against him because you don't see an individual; you just see another typical welfare "whitey."

And it's true. He spent his entire life shuffling from one low-paying government job to another. Well, except those years he spent in prison. Typical. And, between you and me, he's not very articulate.

Oh, he may have some street smarts, but he's not what you'd call an "educated" man. He freely admits he's ignorant about the economy. And apparently the only thing his white running mate knows how to do is crank out one baby after another.

And now, of course, her teenager is pregnant out of wedlock .... because she learns it at home!

But, that doesn't mean we should assume all white people are like that just because so many of them are. I believe there is hope. I believe even the stupidest, greediest, laziest whites can break the cycle of dependence, like this November when we finally move George Bush out of public housing.

Current mood:  sleepy
so i was driving to work the other morning and i saw a homeless person doing tai chi.  i was going to call him "a crazy homeless person" but for all i know, he may just be very health conscious and trying to find a moment of zen in his life ... then it struck me, it seems like quite a few homeless people do this tai chi thing ... i wondered why you never see the homeless playing air guitar or pretending they're playing a piano or drums ... it's always tai chi ... i mean, other than the occasional "american idol playing to the panning camera" move, most of the time my movements when i don't think anyone is watching (i.e., when i'm driving) are music-related.  then i wondered ... how many homeless people have seen "the karate kid" ... you know, the one with ralph macchio ... because, while you see the homeless doing tai chi all the time, you never see them doing the one karate move that every guy who doesn't know karate thinks he knows ... the crane or whatever it's called ... you also never see them doing the mr. miyagi "wax on, wax off" move ... and what was the lesson supposed to be in that scene anywayz.  i imagine the number of homeless people who have seen "the karate kid" would actually be very surprising ... either for its very high number (like 92%) or its very low number (like 4%) ... anyway, that's what i've been thinking a lot about this weekend.

Actor:

The only one here I saw was Half Nelson with Ryan Gosling. He is phenomenal and one of the best young actors of our generation. I didn't see Happyness but I'm wondering why in the hell was Will Smith nominated….was he really that good or did the show just need some star power? Didn't see Blood Diamond either, but you think Leo would've got the nom for Departed. And I know O'Toole is the sentimental favorite…but did anyone even see Venus? From the synopsis, it sounds like the role could've been played just as effectively by any old codger. But just from the trailers, you can tell that Whitaker's performance is really a career-defining performance.

Supporting Actor:

The only ones I saw here were Sunshine, Dreamgirls, and Departed. I might be a little off the mark with Jackie Earle Haley but maybe that's just because I think I'm playing it too safe in all the other categories. I haven't seen Little Children, but a lot of my friends listed it as one of their best films of the year and it's gotten a good amount of critical praise so I think it might be a sympathy vote. Arkin was good in Sunshine and considering that the academy is mainly old white guys with money, he could get it. Murphy was good in Dreamgirls but I think the performance was a little one note. And I love Mark Wahlberg in everything he's in (and he stole every scene he was in), but Jack or Matt Damon really should've gotten the nomination for The Departed. Didn't see Blood Diamond, so I don't know how Djimon Hounsou even got in here. I think Michael Sheen from The Queen should have been nominated here and I'm a little upset Djimon beat him out. Brad Pitt was also good and deserving of a nomination (though not as good as he was in 12 Monkeys). I think you have me changing my vote to Arkin and I just need to hope the old guys are on my side.

Actress:

Unfortunately the only one I saw here was The Queen and Mirren was phenomenal. I'm going to try to nab a friend's screener for Notes but I feel like Judi Dench gives the same outstanding performance in everything she's in…so it's hard to distinguish a great performance for her from just a good performance for her. Didn't see Prada b/c I thought it might be too lightweight for my taste. Never got around to seeing Volver…I don't think any of the ads were very informative as to what the film was actually about…all it did was let us know Penelope Cruz was in it, and was really good in it. Didn't see Little Children, but I appreciate Kate Winslet. Vote goes to Mirren.

Supporting Actress:

Didn't see Notes on a Scandal but I feel that Cate Blanchett & Kate Winslet could almost be a little interchangeable with the roles they pick. That's not really an insult, but their names are always popping up on these things. I enjoyed Babel and I actually thought Adriana Barraza was the stronger of the two nominated performances. If Rinko Kikuchi wins, it's because it "means more" to play a deaf Japanese girl. Abigail Breslin was good in Sunshine but I don't know if she had a big enough part for me to even have nominated her. I actually would've picked Toni Collette over her. Which leaves Jennifer Hudson. While I think her performance is far overrated, let's be honest and say this nomination and her win is all about one scene … the big scene. Again with someone being overlooked for their co-star, I thought Anika Noni Rose had a better acting performance than Hudson did. But it's a great story for Hudson to win and she's been giving great acceptance speeches so far so she's a total lock.

Animated Pic:

I didn't see any of them, but all the prognosticators are pointing to Cars so I'm gonna do the same. (Don't think I actually saw any animated films this year. A little upset I haven't gotten to see A Scanner Darkly yet.)

Director:

This is Marty all the way. Of course, isn't that what everyone said with The Aviator and Gangs of New York …and it didn't happen. While if there was a better directing accomplishment in this field, I think the same thing could've happened but none of the others really stood out. Here the only ones I haven't seen are Iwo Jima & United 93. If there's an upset I think it goes to Paul Greengrass with United 93. Again, a lot of people I know thought 93 was one of the best films of the year and Greengrass would get the win for so deftly handling the subject matter. Inarritu was good at directing Babel , but it's one of those where I don't know if the scriptwriter or director should get more merit for the film. And Frears symbolism in The Queen was a little too blatant for my vote.

Documentary:

Ay, I didn't see any of these either, lol. I think the only documentary this year I did see was "The Bridge" about suicide jumpers at the Golden Gate Bridge . An Inconvenient Truth seems to be the lock for the win.

Foreign Language:

The only one I saw here is Pan's Labyrinth and if I had my say I would've given a directing nod to Guillermo del Toro. I'm hearing that The Lives of Others may beat out Pan's, but I can't see that happening with all of Pan's other nominations and the money it's made at the box office. Can't remember seeing any other foreign films this year.

Song:

The only one from Dreamgirls I even remotely remember is "Love You I Do." The 3 nominated songs may all cancel each other out leaving way for perennial Oscar fave Randy Newman with "Our Town." Of course, if they wanted to show a little more love to Al Gore & Inconvenient Truth, it could just as easily go to Melissa Etheridge for her tune. I think again the old white guys don't want to vote for an old white lesbian and it ends up going to "Love You I Do."

Screenplay – Adapted:

Why the hell is Borat even in here?? I enjoyed it, yes. And an acting nomination for Sacha Baron Cohen would've been more appropriate than a nom in this category. Didn't see Children of Men (hopefully tonight though) or Children or Scandal. But if Departed doesn't take Best Pic, it's got this one.

Screenplay – Original:

Only one I didn't see was Iwo Jima . It's not going to Pan's because it's foreign language. I think it comes down to Babel or Sunshine. Again, it's a toss-up with these two. I think I'm going to go with Babel because it's about "something."

Picture:

I've heard so many things from so many places. Only one I haven't seen is Iwo Jima … and I don't know anyone who's seen Iwo Jima so I think it's out. The Queen was good, but I don't think it's how the Academy will want to be remembered by in 50 years. The same could be said for Sunshine. Babel was good but a little too "wasn't this called Crash last year?" It could go to The Departed but is it a great film…enjoyable, yes…great, perhaps. Sunshine could have the sentimental vote since everyone could watch and enjoy Sunshine. I took a screener home with me over Thanksgiving of Sunshine and watched it with my parents, and my grandmother and we all loved it…and if any of my younger cousins were there, they would've loved it too. (The only comment my grandmother had was "why does he have to curse so much?"). I know I said I was leaning towards Sunshine before but now I'm swaying to a Marty love fest with Departed. It's made a ton of money, was well-directed, well-written, well-acted … it would almost be an embarrassment if it didn't win under those circumstances.

Other categories:

Art Direction – Pan's (could go to Dreamgirls)

Cinematography – Children of Men (I hear the cinematography is amazing and this won the guild. My second choice would be Prestige.)

Costume – Marie Antoinette (I thought Dreamgirls was too simple. Same with Queen. Didn't see Curse, Prada, or Antoinette though.)

Editing – Babel (won the guild award. Maybe an upset for Departed, or 93 just to show it some love.)

Make-up – Pan's (only one I saw here)

Score – Notes (I'm so bad at remembering scores, I'm just going for this one because it's Philip Glass. I thought the score for Brokeback was too sparse to be nominated or win so it could go to Babel & Gustavo Santoalla. Good German is Thomas Newman so he could get it as well. Queen is Desplat who's also well-known but I don't remember much music from Queen.)

Sound Editing – Pirates (only saw Flags)
Sound Mixing – Dreamgirls (only saw Dreamgirls & Flags)
Visual Effects – Pirates (didn't see any of these)
Docu Short – Two Hands (didn't see any of these)
Animated Short – Matchgirl (didn't see any of these)
Live Short – West Bank Story (didn't see any of these)

Top Films of 2006

I think my favorite film of all of last year … and I'm upset it got no nominations was The Fountain. I thought it would've at least bagged score or visual effects or cinematography or some of the techy/crafty kind of stuff, but nothing!

Fingertips are all I have
Have you heard the sea?
The water's edge is all I have
Have you heard it breathe?
An endless sigh I cannot hear
Here I cease to run
Arid mouth so hard to speak
Speak? Cat got my tongue
Describe to me how I look
Look what I've become
Describe to me how I look

I'm not scared of dying
I'm not scared of death
I'll keep a smile 'til my last breath
I've loved 'til I've lost
I've lived how I felt
One day I will find peace within myself

Boyish grin, it bears me well
Where can I begin?
Don't forget I'm still around
How the wind feels free
Behind the smile I fade away
The wayward days are gone
I love this power
I love this power
I love this power that's crushed so easily
I love this power

I'm not scared of dying
I'm not scared of death
I'll keep a smile 'til my last breath
I've loved 'til I've lost
I've lived how I felt
One day I will find peace within myself

I want to take all the sadness
Of the world from your shoulders
I want to take all the sadness
Of the world from your shoulders
I want to take all the sadness

So I haven't written anything of any substance in this thing in forever it seems, and I don't know if that'll be changing tonight or not. I guess I just felt like I haven't had much to say lately or I've been getting it out in other ways … using my voice instead of computer pixels.

I've been kinda' depressed lately. Really feel like drawing in. I've got great groups of friends, I've been keeping pretty active in my social life, I just got a raise and promotion at my job, so what is it? Love. Fucking love.

Previously I was happy to be single. It gave me the time, money and ability to do what I want when I want, see who I want how I want, and just enjoy my own company. But lately I've felt kind of alone. I'm really due for a relationship or something right now. There have been people who've been interested lately, but no one who really inspires me to anything. And there've been people I've been interested in, people who inspire me to feel. But unfortunately the feeling hasn't always been reciprocated.

Went to Disneyland a couple weeks ago and had a good time. Been going to Fubar on Monday nights lately and enjoying myself. Saw some concerts recently: Graph Nobel, Jill Sobule & Julia Sweeney, Teitur, Starsailor, Ed Harcourt, Cyndi Lauper. Got a couple new books that I haven't had time to read yet: Alain de Botton The Architecture of Happiness and Mark Z. Danielewski Only Revolutions. Went to a book reading/signing for MZD. I hope to get to at least one of them over Thanksgiving. Prolly AdB since he'll be a much easier read. I did finally finish The Romantic Movement the other day at my car dealer.

I think that's all I have to say now. Sorry it's not more upbeat or more of it, lol. The concerts were good. I've gotten some cds lately: Goldfrapp, Sarah McLachlan, Graph Nobel, Tom Waits, Julia Sweeney, Morcheeba, Van Hunt, Tobias Froberg, Cat Power, Emm Gryner, Pete Yorn, Harold Arlen tribute, Serena Ryder, Lady & Bird, Tori Amos.

I saw Flags of our Fathers today and it was okay. Shortbus was very good. The Departed was disappointing. I've also been watching a lot of TV lately. God bless DVR.

Someone cheer me up. And I need cute new pics of me. After I get my hair cut again. Which I hope to do next weekend.

For those of you who didn't want to cough up $60 to come see Cyndi lauper with me (which is all of you), that's what you missed. As you can see, she got it going right from the very first song. "think" "drove" "all through" and "sisters" are four of my fave Cyndi lauper songs. She was walking on the dinner tables and everything. Jill sobule opened and everyone in the audience loved her. She was selling a ton of cds at the end. Cyndi came out and did "Mexican wrestler" with Jill, and Jill came out and did "money changes everything" with Cyndi (as well as Cyndi's sister). It was a great show and well worth the $60. Canyon club is an interesting place. I guess it holds about 1200, but it feels more intimate than that. It's wider than it is long, so there's better vantage points from places. The wait staff was all really nice and friendly too.

I know I haven't posted in forever. I even got emails from people asking what was going on because I hadn't posted in forever. And I have a lot of emails I haven't returned. I've just been busy. When I haven't been busy, I really haven't been interested in being in front of a computer screen … so some of you may have noticed I'm away about 95% of the time on IM now too.

Work is going okay. I'm getting tired of being an assistant but having difficulty finding the energy, time and motivation to apply to grad school. I think I want to do higher education administration, but I'm not entirely sure. I go back and forth between being terrified that I'm not smart enough for grad school and will not having any money and, well, being afraid I'm not smart enough for grad school and will not have any money. Especially when right now I have more money than I've ever had in my life. Been making double payments on my school and car loans. Hope to get them paid off early. Was going to put some money in a CD, but I'm losing more money on loan interest than I would make in a CD. I need to call Suze Orman and have her help me.

Gone on a few dates with a few guys. It's frustrating though. I can never get feelings to sync up with somebody else. Current case in point – I've got two guys in my life right now. One who I am crazy about and makes me get that warm fuzzy feeling inside without having to stick a gerbil up my ass … but he'll never be as into me as I am into him and will never be able to give me what I want him to give me. The other is perfect in every way, shape, and form (smart, kind, cute, funny, intelligent, passionate, empathetic, caring, etc…) and while I do like him as well … I don't get that overjoyed, never-stop-smiling feeling I get with the other one. So what do I do? Chase down the rainbow-lined path that's clearly going nowhere or stroll down the dirt road and hope I come across some lollipop fields and cloud formations? I realized I was maybe happier a couple months ago when I was going through a romantic dry spell because I didn't have anybody to pin any hopes up. Now that there's hope, there's disappointment. Meanwhile, frogs still fall, honeysuckle still smells, and it's not going to stop 'til you wise up.

What have I been listening to lately? Cyndi Lauper, Tahiti 80, Esthero, Aimee Mann, Poe, Eleni Mandell, Cat Power, Bic Runga, Sondre Lerche. The new Starsailor album is fantastic and will prolly be in my top 5 albums of 2006.

I just finished watching dvds of Veronica Mars season 2. Waiting for me is Smallville 5, Lost 2, Arrested Development 3, The Office 1-2 and Boston Legal 1. Plus I ordered The Critic and All in the Family 4-5. I also went to Blockbuster the other day and got: Me And You And Everyone We Know, Yes, Criminal, Cronicas, Heights, Millions, Murderball, and The Assassination of Richard Nixon. Plus I already had Cry Baby, Cecil B Demented, Mind The Gap, Team America, Napoleon Dynamite, and the Eels live DVD which I haven't opened. Don't know when I'm gonna get time to watch them. I think I'm gonna buy a portable DVD player before I leave for Thanksgiving.

So, yes, I am going to Indiana to see my extended family for Thanksgiving. I leave Thanksgiving morning and come back the Monday immediately afterwards. I'll be in town for all of Christmas and New Years, unless someone wants to go to Vegas with me … (Since none of you punks want to go to the Vegoose festival with me.)

Okay…I think this is all I have the energy to write about now. Maybe I'll post more again in a month or two about the nothingness and indecision that plagues me following this posting.
