I had just turned 23 years old when I started volunteering for Project Angel Food. I would drive around Los Angeles twice a week to bring boxed lunches to people who were dying of AIDS. (Back then there was a lot more dying of AIDS than living with HIV. ) When I brought them their lunch, often times that's all they wanted. I would smile, ask if there's anything else they needed and then I'd head out for my next delivery. I guess they wanted to eat their lunch in peace because most of them took the lunch with a swift 'thank you' and shut the door quickly.
But not Claudio.

Claudio seemed especially pleased when I first arrived at his door step. I thought to myself, "he must really be hungry." He had dark, curly hair, an accent of some sort and a smile that emanated from his very core. He seemed to be around 30 or so. I was about to ask him if there's anything else he needed but before I could finish my sentence, the door swung open and Claudio was in his kitchen, making tea. I took that as a cue for me to enter his apartment.

I stepped into Claudio's world and watched him eat his lunch while we both sipped Jasmine tea. He tells me of his art and he shows me his paintings. Radiant reds and vivid blues, vibrating with energy and life, just like Claudio, in spite of..it. I tell him I'm a writer. It begins to rain. We get up and walk over to the window where we both watch the rain for awhile. I tell him that I prefer the sunshine but I like to write when it rains. He told me that he likes to paint when it rains. We speak of art, love, friendship and death. He gives me a book to read about life after death. He tells me that he is not scared and that he knows they will find an end to this disease soon.

Our friendship grew in the three months that followed. I found myself looking forward to our lunchtime chats, tea sipping and rain watching. Still, when the day came when Claudio's address was removed from my delivery list, it didn't seem possible. How could someone who shinned so brightly be gone just like that?

I remember Claudio's humor and his radiant reds and vivid blues. I was honored to be in the presence of someone who was so at peace with the cards dealt him. And I remain hopeful that Claudio was right and that a cure is just around the corner. Soon.

On October 19th I will walk in Claudio's memory, with team AKA talent agency in the AIDS WALK L.A.
