HEMPFEST FUCKIN ROCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANX again to Mike Cann/MassCann/NORML/HighTimesMagazine/etc... for having us headline this year's Boston Freedom Rally and also for awarding us the "Best Music Act of the Year" at the MASSCANN Awards Show! Here's a mention of us in the Boston Herald.......

__________________________________________________________

Marijuana legalization advocates openly smoked pot at the annual Boston Freedom Rally on Boston Common yesterday, spurring arrests by Boston police.

"It's one thing to protest the illegality of marijuana, that itself isn't illegal," said James Kenneally, BPD spokesman. "People have the right to free expression, but it's another thing to smoke marijuana, which is an illegal narcotic, during the protest.
"

The annual Boston Freedom Rally - described by organizers as "the largest marijuana reform gathering on the East Coast" - drew hundreds of stoners, activists and vendors to the park. They spent the bright, sunny afternoon touting their support for Question 2, which will appear on the ballot in November and would replace criminal penalties for possession of up to 1 ounce of marijuana with a fine of no more than $100.

"It's a thing where we can unite for a cause to legalize weed, man," said Howlin' Jack Boone, 27, of Waltham, lead singer of the rally's headline band, Graveyard BBQ. "This year we're hoping for decriminalization, next year it'll be a celebration.
"

The Massachusetts Cannabis Reform Coalition co-sponsored the event, along with the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws.

"We're close to winning the first major battle with Question 2, and MassCann won't stop until it's legal, regulated and taxed," said Steven Epstein, co-founder of the coalition.

Yesterday's rally was "a combination of education and activism," said Allen St. Pierre, NORML executive director.

Or, as guitarist "Brown Bag" Johnson of Graveyard BBQ put it, "We're fighting against the man, burning the rope and having a good time.
"

The arrests ruined the mellow mood for some participants.

"It's a real fear. When they arrest you, it's quick and swift," said pot enthusiast Rachel Elorrisa, 29, of New Hampshire who admitted to "lighting up" before the rally. "Police are out here in street clothes, and when they arrest, you have to sit in that holdi
ng area all day."

VIDEOS and PICS of HEMPFEST TO BE POSTED SHORTLY!!!!!!!!!!!

BROWNBAG JOHNSON

Boston can be counted on for many things. Great Baseball, awesome beer, got college girls and most importantly great music (well maybe 2nd to the girls). One of the latest bands to add to the constantly impressive Boston music scene is Graveyard BBQ a band that believes their audience deserves not just quality heavy rock tunes but also a full on rock show. Costumes, antics, high octane rock kick-outs, Graveyard BBQ seems to have it all. I got to sit down with guitar/vocalist Brownbag Johnson who clued me in on who Graveyard BBQ are and what drives the band onward and upward.

IR: So what's new with Graveyard BBQ?

BJ: We just released a music video for "The Clothes That Makes The Man" (check it out at you tube.com) and we're filming another one for "BBQ NATION" next month. Then we headline this year's annual Boston Freedom Rally HEMPFEST on Saturday September 20th. Next month is gonna be rockin!

IR: I have to ask man, where did you get that name from?

BBJ: Our original singer, Brixx actually came up with it. It popped out of his mouth one day and just stuck. I think the man downstairs might have had something to do with that! The name Graveyard BBQ embodies what the band is and sounds like, to a T.

IR: How has the Massachusetts music scene influenced how you write?

BBJ: To be completely honest, I haven't been at all influenced by any of the "bigger" successful bands that have come out of MA. I think its great that the scene exploded the way it did though, cause it opened up a lot of doors for a lot of bands and people, but I draw influences and inspiration from far different sources than what those bands sound like and what they represent. SamBlackChurch is a band from MA that all of us fucking Love and Respect. In their heyday, those guys were a fucking force man!!! Jet and Ben actually did cameos on our song "Meat Yer Enemy" off of "Greatest Hits Volume II" You should check it out.

IR: What can an audience expect from a GYBBQ show? How have audience reactions been?

BBJ: Sex, Booze, and RockNRoll INTENSITY at its absolute finest my man. Electricity! We've yet to tour outside of the states yet, but reactions have been great all over. Everywhere from Boston to Fargo, North Dakota to L.A really seem to "get" what we're doing and fucking eat it up. We're constantly upping our game and our chemistry is getting better and better as a live act. We're not up on stage to rehearse our set, We're up there to fucking ROCK, have FUN, and give people their moneys worth and leave them wanting more. At a BBQ show, you might witness a guitar or 2 getting smashed, a 60 year old man crowd surfing, raw meat being launched into the crowd, or someone getting a blow job on the side of the stage! But the music is always the MOST IMPORTANT part of our show. You never know what's gonna erupt, but one things for sure… Its always FUN., and that's the way we like it.

IR: Some bands don't use stage names and all the imagery you do. Do you think it's better for a band to have a whole "show" as opposed to just being a band?

BBJ: Yes and No. What we do works great for us, but it wouldn't necessarily work for any other band. Our whole "shtick" if that's what you wanna call it, is basically a glorification of our personalities and the music and influence that we all grew up on and love. When u see us or chill with us, you know why I'm Brownbag Johnson, and why Bud Black is Bud Black, it just makes sense haha and the same goes for the other BBQ brothas, Howlin' Jack Boone and Whitey Trasher. I'm a firm believer that you gotta look the part if yer gonna play the part. I def think we're one of those bands that are filling a HUGE void in today's music. Where are the ZZTop's? Motley Crue's? Pantera's of today? These are bands that we all grew up on and continue listening to, and none of these types of bands are around anymore. They've become extinct. They prided themselves off of their Live Show, and that's exactly what we're all about. When we reach a level of success to the point that we're given a huge production stage show, it's gonna be the end of the world hahaaa!

IR: So when is the big tour with you and Waltham going to happen?

BBJ: : Hopefully soon godammn it, cuz those guys are getting up there! Haha Frank Pino and Co. are all good cats. We all grew up together in Waltham, everyone knows everyone. They were a great super talented band and accomplished a lot of cool things. I'm still waiting for the reunion with his brother Dave though! Dave was actually our original drummer "Peterbilt Wilson" and is now playing guitar in Powerman 5000. Best of luck to all of those guys.

IR: Do you think heavy music has gotten entirely to serious? Is there a lack of a party vibe in rock today?

BBJ: YES. Music today has become really lame and its so aching for change, and I'm not just talking about Metal…its like this in every genre of music. Most of today's heavy music makes me cringe man. Its gotten SO serious to me that I can't even take it seriously anymore, and I know that a lot of fellow RockNRollers and Metalheads feel the same way that I do. Granted, there's definitely token bands out there that are up and coming and ones that continue to rule, but they're few and far between. Every band out there now sounds and looks exactly the same, and they even have the same type of band name! Its so boring and ridiculous. Where did ORIGINALITY and coolness go??? Where's the Rock Stars, the legends?? Record labels are a big contribute to that, they need to wake the fuck up and stop signing garbage!!! Bands today are so in the box, and predictable, and mediocre at best. I'm not saying that we're the best thing since sliced bread, but we're definitely different than anything out there, and that's a big driving force behind what Graveyard BBQ is and what we do. We're against all of it man! At least the shit.

IR: Are you guys currently writing new material? Will it be different from what fans have come to expect?

BBJ: Yeah, We're in pre-production right now, not quite sure when a release will be, but definitely sometime next year, and lemme tell ya… its gonna blow people's minds! The ideas never stop flowing. We've got BIG plans for the new direction we're heading into. Since we've already released our debut records "Greatest Hits Volume 1 & 2" which were 25 years ahead of their time, the only place we can go from here is backwards!!! Conceptual digression. I think Spinal Tap would agree that it's absolutely brilliant I tell ya!

IR: Top 5 desert island records?

BBJ:
Thin Lizzy- Greatest Hits
Van Halen II
ACDC (anything w/ Bon Scott)
Black Sabbath- Paranoid
Led Zeppelin- Physical Graphitti
Pantera- The Great Southern Trendkill
and for a runner up… Eddie Money- Greatest Hits

IR: Name a song you wish you had written and tell me why?

BBJ: Anything by The Beatles or some shit like that. That way I'd have royalty checks for millions of bucks in the mail at all times. And everyday I'd be dressed in a snakeskin suit, surrounded by a harem of beautiful girlz, struttin around town with a pet tiger.

IR: Describe to those who don't know the Graveyard BBQ sound What are your influences? Where do you derive inspiration from?

BBJ: We call our sound "DIRTCORE" It's a style all of our own which combines a lot of different elements including; Delta Country Blues, Slide Guitar, Classic Rock, Stoner Rock, Surf, Pyschobilly, Punk, Thrash, Metal. Throw it all into a melting pot …or a BBQ Grill, and you've got yerself the sound that is Graveyard BBQ. Personally, I love it all man. I'm pretty open-minded when it comes to music and I can find something good and cool in almost everything. I draw influence from what I think is the best of whatever I might be listening to or experiencing at the time. Most inspiration for songs comes from real life experience, the characters that I'm surrounded by, and of course SEX, BOOZE, n ROCKnROLL!!! Its usually the simple things that click the best though. I tend to write the majority of our songs on an acoustic guitar. There's nothing better to me than sitting down in my rocking chair on my front porch and jamming on my resonator steel guitar, stomping my foot. That's when the magic happens. My formula is, if it sounds killer and catchy just on an acoustic alone, its gonna rip and melt faces when I plug in. That's BBQ.

IR: Favorite alcoholic beverage and why.

BBJ: hmmm tough question. I'd have to go with Everything!!! It all depends on what mood I'm in too, could be a bottle of Wine, Tequila, Whisky, or a bunch of beers. Whatever gets me fired up and cream skull boogie'n all night long makes Brownbag a happy man!

IR: Pop culture trend you can't stand?

BBJ: FUCK EMO. Its time for these douches to put away the guy-liner, straight parted comb-overs, and little Bugle Boy pants that their mommy's bought them at Marshalls. DIE MUTHAFUCKAS, DIE!!!

IR: Tell me a good road story from the Graveyard BBQ rock show.

BBJ: There's way too many! But I guess here's a good quick one… this past tour we did, somewhere along the way we stopped at a Porn Store and bought this inflatable blow-up doll called "Fatty Patty" We pulled off the highway at a rest-stop in Idaho which had a huge snow covered mountain to the side of it. Our drummer Trasher ripped off all of clothes, ran up to the top of this mountain, and snow tubed all the way down on Fatty Patty bare ass naked! There were a bunch of truckers and onlookers watching him. It was classic!!! One of funniest fucking things I've ever seen.

IR: : With economics being what they are today, how hard is it to be an unsigned band? How do you guys try and beat that?

BBJ: Extremely hard. Nowadays you can't get on a national tour, radio, or anything unless yer signed, super lucky, or you got someone backing you that's worth a million bucks, or your sucking someone's dick. And never mind the gas prices nowadays! We've been grinding hard for 5 years now, and I can honestly say that we are thee hardest working unsigned band that I know. There are definitely avenues out there that you can pursue and become independently successful especially with the use of the internet, but its still hard. I attribute a lot of our success to the GUITAR HERO videogame. We won the "Be A Guitar Hero" national contest in 2005 to have our song "Cheat on the Church" featured on the game. That alone immortalized us and launched us from being just some band from Waltham,MA and created a national/worldwide buzz and fan base, The BBQ NATION!. Sometimes its lucky breaks like that helps put bands over the top. But even with that accomplishment under our belt, somehow we're still without a record deal?, and still inching away to the top to get this thing to level that we deservingly need to be at. There's no truer words than Bon Scott's "It's a long way to the top if you wanna RockNRoll" U gotta Go for the Gusto!

IR: Being as over the top as you are, do you ever worry about being tagged as a "Joke Band"?

BBJ: Well.. We actually did start as a "joke band" and we still kind of are…haha I could care less about what people think about us. All they'd have to do is see us live once, and they'd know that we mean business. If you were to match us up with any band in the world on an equal playing field, I feel confident enough that we'd either A. CRUSH them, or B. Give em a good godammn run for their money! We do take the music and the band very seriously, but most importantly we like to have FUN. If having fun and being over the top constitutes you as being a "joke band" then so be it. This band and the people that surround us are naturally a total cast of characters, so we can't help it! There's a never a dull moment around this crew.

IR: Any tour plans for the rest of 2008 and into 2009?

BBJ: Absolutely. We did a 6 week U.S Tour in May/June, and have already played 70+ shows this year. We're planning on making a West Coast residency for a couple months early next year, that is of course if we don't get some sort of deal and aren't on a national tour by then. So get ready West Coast, WE'RE COMING FOR YOU NOW!!!

IR: How has the GYBBQ sound changed from when the band first got together?

BBJ: Tremendously. We've evolved so much and gone thru alot of changes musically and personally up till this point. When we started out, this band was a hoaxy jokesy side-project with little to no expectations and was never really intended to be anything more than that. It literally turned into a monster overnight. "Greatest Hits Volume 1" was recorded in my bedroom, with a drum machine and a completely different line-up and chemistry. With "Vol.II" we stepped it up so many more notches in a lot of different aspects. We're now a REAL band, and that's the only thing that is different. Throughout everything, we've always stuck to our guns and kept the same sound and vibe that we've always had. Everything we did and still do, is still always gonna be Graveyard BBQ. I think we've definitely created a unique sound and style that is undeniable and is timeless. I consider us like an ACDC or Motorhead of what we do. You know that you can always trust those bands to put out great shit while maintaining integrity to what they do.

IR: When GYBBQ is all over what do you want the legacy to have been?

BBJ: One god, GRILL, Indivisible under a BBQ NATION. Maybe by then we'll have "The Very Best of The Greatest Hits" But The BBQ will never die!!!!!!!!! ALL HAIL THE BBQ NATION!!!! "IF YOU AIN'T WITH US, YER AGAINST US"
