"Just as the presence of an acoustic instrument can heighten the otherworldliness ofelectronic sounds, so electronics may lend acoustic instruments a super-reality, as the blasting Australian light can do to trees and flowers.
This is the effect on the marvellously titled 'In Bed We Trust' when Adrian Klumpes' piano cleaves a path through thickets of electronics generated by Shoeb Ahmad's guitar and by Klumpes himself. It is not a matter of sonic contrast, however. The piano melodies often unfurl with the stark beauty of time-lapse photography of a flower opening and they add a solid narrative to the mists and heat hazes of ephemeral electronic improvisations.
Sometimes the piano is, itself, treated and becomes part of the Milky Way of sounds that seem to decorate silence rather than negate it.
A Canberran, Ahmad proves an imaginative and empathetic collaborator for Klumpes, known for his work with Triosk and 3ofmillions. Fans of the Robert Fripp-Brian Eno duets will have much to enjoy."  Sydney Morning Herald April 4-5 2009.

"Sometimes this sounds more like the ghost of music than music itself, so eerie and portentous is it. As in Poe's short stories, mood is everything for gifted Sydney pianist Adrian Klumpes (formerly of Triosk) and his accomplices Abel Cross (bass) and Finn Ryan (drums). All manner of electronic treatments transform the acoustic instruments, playing simple and beguiling melodic motifs in the restless search for another disquieting texture. the strongest material has the brutality hinted at rather than extant, however." - Sydney Morning Herald 4 stars, Feb 2009

If you haven't heard 3ofmillions, there;s now 3 tracks up! Conscription is one of the heavier tracks from 'Immediate'. It features processed bass, furious drums and some squealing and moaning and layers from me (no piano!). I'm thinking about divulging all production tricks here in this blog.. Anyone interested?

Also now up is track 4 from Klumpes Ahmad 'In Bed We Trust'. Download it! This is a spacious improv. Shoeb uses a prepared guitar and a small dictaphone with some field recordings on it. I played some melody on the piano.

Shoeb and I are on tour til Feb 22... then hopefully i'll have more time to get in to the new solo album!

peace.

3ofmillions, Immediate (Space Dairy)

Since the break-up of Triosk, I’ve been curious as to which direction
pianist Adrian Klumpes would take. Triosk themselves were the most
patient and focused of bands, while Klumpes’ solo release Be Still
fused his impeccable improvisatory playing to some more experimental
electronics. The dichotomy was starker with the debut single from his
new trio 3ofmillions - between its shorter accessible a-side and its
much longer and much more abstract b-side. To an extent, this
schizophrenic approach continues with their debut album Immediate, but
it is never less than a thrilling listen.

The opening pieces seem to give notice that Klumpes is settling back in
to more familiar territory. “Her Subtlety In My Subconscious” is the
most Triosk, with repetitive piano phrases set to a pulsing cymbal, and
it is followed by the tension-building figures of “The Toll”. It isn’t
to last, with the threesome heading to the ditch for a punch-up
immediately thereafter: “Inconvenient Thankyou” sparks and flashes with
Cecil Taylor-like piano flurries, further illuminated by huge crashes
of cymbal while the bass rumbles solidly behind. From there it keeps on
heading further out: “The Hand Of God” is a jagged squiggle with superb
drums wriggling to escape the loosest of frameworks imposed by minimal
piano and crackling electronics, while “Conscription” has the
skronkiest of noise being nailed in place by a militaristic drum beat.
It is only on the twenty minute last track that they rein themselves in
once more. “Accepting What It Is” builds at a Necks-like pace with
stately, almost Reichian piano arpeggios and a wash of cymbal, before
completing its journey by seemingly dissolving into a hazy electronic
jungle.

The demise of Triosk has given Klumpes license to make much deeper
navigations into what were, for him, uncharted territories. Further
exploration on your part is highly recommended - Immediate is available
with immediate effect from the 3ofmillions website.

3 of millions is the new trio.

Featuring Abel Cross on bass/electronics, Finn Ryan on drums and me doing my usual piano/rhodes/FX/noise ...

We've just released a 3" CD on hellosQuare called GOLDEN CALF and hopefully the full length CD will be finished by year's end.
