Dare 2B Dif’rnt

Dare 2B Dif’rnt is a co-ed act that consists of Debra Torres and Paulie D. They both hail from Staten Island, New York and got together in 1993. Paulie had studio time booked for himself and Lisa Gonzalez known as Split Dis. They were to record a cover of the Machine disco classic “There But For The Grace Of God.” They chose this song because the original made waves with its reference to a place with “No blacks, no Jews, no Gays.” They wanted to flip the line to make it a positive one by replacing that line with “No crack, no crime, no A.I.D.S.”

They felt in a small way they could affect the world in a positive way. However on the day of the studio appointment Lisa had to back out of the act due to some long term dental work that she didn’t realize would affect her pronunciation of certain words. Debra Torres was Lisa’s cousin and since she knew the tune and happened to be there hanging out, volunteered to do it. Debra and Paulie worked together so well that they decided to make it permanent and changed their name to Dare 2B Dif’rnt. That studio effort became the “B” side of their debut ZYX release in 1994 called “A World Of Love.”

“A World Of Love” scored number one placements on the International Hi-NRG Chart in DMA Magazine and in Streetsound Magazine on the Canadian Dance Chart. It was also a Sales Breakout in Billboard Magazine. “A World Of Love” was also licensed to Indo China where it still appears on compilations today in it’s original version. This single led to many gigs, the first of which found them performing with KC & The Sunshine Band!

They followed up “A World Of Love” with a cover of the Melissa Etheridge hit “Come To My Window.” Where the first one established them in the clubs, this one went straight to radio, going top 10 on the Hitmakers Mix Show Chart and garnering enough airplay, (particularly in Texas) that the group popped up as Chartbound in the Billboard Radio Monitor. Performances in clubs such as the Rock Island in San Antonio for KTFM, the Sound Factory in San Francisco for the Billboard Dance Music Summit and Sanctuary in Miami for the Winter Music Conference followed and they soon became a hot live act. Both of these singles were produced by B Squared D Productions which was made up of Billy and Walter Brandt who went onto success as part of the group Seven & The Sun on Atlantic Records (“Walk With Me”) and Guiseppe D. (Celine Dion, N-Sync, Michael Jackson), who still remains one of the hottest remixer/ producers in the dance business.

ZYX released as their third single a white label extended mix of the Tony Moran produced “Live Without Your Love.” At that very time their A&R guy and Promotion man at ZYX, Harry Frank Towers left to do the same job at Popular Records and the new A&R man Kevin Doyle was more interested in bringing in his own acts than working with the artists already signed to the company. A commercial release of that extended version of “Live Without Your Love” was never to be even though the single was an out the box add on the radio in Chicago on Energy 88. Debra and Paul started proceedings to get a release from ZYX to join Harry at Popular but the proceedings took a bit longer than Debra was willing to wait so she left to pursue a career as an Emergency Medical Technician with the New York City Fire Department.

For the next couple of years Debra and Paulie toyed with the idea of coming back, the events of September 11th 2001 made that a possibility. Debra is a member of the FDNYEMS. So when the Twin Towers fell she was called to the scene and remained there for many months searching through the rubble for her friends and also working in the morgue at Ground Zero. She eventually came to the decision that rerecording “A World Of Love” would be a positive statement and help her get through one of the most difficult experiences anybody could ever go through. They were positive that this was the right move after they heard from Lexington, Kentucky disc jockey Marvin Collett who told them that after 9/11 he ended each evening with the original “A World Of Love” as he wanted to send people out into the world with a positive feeling at such a difficult time. In 2003 “A World Of Love” was remixed by Guiseppe D. and came out on Cetacean Records. It became a top 15 mix show single and secured airplay in a number of markets of which KNRJ in Phoenix had it in gold rotation until they went off the air in 2009

Their next single “Please” was on the TVI subsidiary Sirenia Records (formerly Cetacean). “Please” was written by Paulie D. as a description of the day he moved out of the house to pursue life with his lover as a Gay man. This tune pays tribute musically as an Interpolation of the Bronski Beat single “Smalltown Boy.” It was produced by Chris “The Greek” with remixes from Chris Brophy from the UK, Liquid 360 and Guiseppe D. The Liquid 360 mix entitled “Mother May I,” has additional vocals by Bruce Donnally of Liquid 360. He added the first verse of “Smalltown Boy” and perfectly integrated it into the track to really nail home the connection between the two songs. “Please” was featured on “The Wedding Party” compilation raising money for Gay Rights and Same Sex Marriage Initiatives. It was released in July 2005 by the Tone 1 Music Group. Also Centaur Records licensed it for their Pride CD mixed by world reknown DJ and Splash NY resident Max Rodriguez which was released in June, 2006.

Their latest single, "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" by Dare 2B Dif'rnt f/ Nancy Yvonne will be on the forthcoming full length Capp Release entitled "Best Of 80's Dance." Other cuts on the album are "Freeway Of Love" by Pepper MaShay, "I Can't Wait" by Ohsha Kai, "Time After Time" by Rikah, "Be Near Me" by Ernest Kohl and "Magic" by Jacinta.

Hey it's Jeremy Gloff here your OUTmusic interviewer!  This time around
we have Dare 2 B Dif'rnt from NY!  They are wonderful so make sure to
check out their music in our OUTmusic player.  Here's what they had to
say when we sat down and emailed:
1) There are two members in Dare 2B Dif'rnt. Can you tell me about each member and the role you each play?

Paulie
- Debra and I work together as a team. Each decision is made as a group
effort, whether it be writing ,or deciding what song we would like to
cover. We always want what's best to properly execute the song and it's
message.

Debra - I feel the same way. I would also like to add that Paulie's strength is my inspiration.

2) When was Dare 2 B Dif'rnt formed?

Paulie - Dare 2B Dif'rnt was formed back in 1993. Our first release was "A World Of Love " in 1994.

Debra - Guess that says it all lol.

3) Reading your bio I saw the 9/11 attack played a role in the band reuniting.
Will you share that story with my readers?

Paulie
- Sure... Debra and I had split for awhile. We were upset with the lack
of promotion ZYX Music was committing to Us. Artist development is
crucial when breaking a new act. Once Harry Towers ( Who now runs Deet
Promotions) left the company the heart and soul seemed to have gone
with him. We decided to leave and peruse other things. Heart broken
Debra wanted to take a break and regroup. There is a great amount of
work, sacrifice, persistence and time one must commit to in order to
make some headway in this business of music.
Missing our fans and
performing live we felt the timing was right. We also felt like we
started something and never finished it. It was that emptiness which
drove our hearts. We were in the studio days before putting some
finishing touches on our next record when 9/11 hit. Debra working for
E.M.S. at the time, and was one of the early responders to the scene.
The devastation and loss left a great shock on the entire nation let
alone those who where at the scene day after day. Singing became a
healing mechanism. It was the suggestion of Harry Towers to re- record
"A World Of Love. " We were then informed that club DJ Marvin Collett
played the song as the last song of his set every night. He wanted the
message a world of love to be the last thing his patrons remembered.

We
also learned that WSIA DJ Raven, who was one of the few DJs's who
decided to play music on the radio after 9/11, and was the only DJ
playing music in NYC as all the other stations went all talk. She
wanted the world to know we were alive and New Yorkers were resilient.
She too played "A World Of Love as well as many other inspirational
tones to keep our spirit alive. Hats off to them. We then quickly
remixed, re mastered and never looked back.

Debra - After
working hundreds of hours at Ground Zero, I felt I had to put my
emotions aside. I had no choice and it was what I had to do to get
through it. Each day after my shift I felt a great loss, a loss of
living and when we were talking about music we felt we had to put out a
positive message through our music that life still goes on andwe can
still get up after we've been knocked down and appreciate life, love
& living.

4) What is your current project?

Paulie -
Our current project is "There's Something In The Air" which has been
doing extremely well for us and has been remixed by some of the best -
Josh Harris, Georgie Porgie, Chris "The Greek," Friscia and Lamboy and
DJ Giuseppe D amongst others. Right now we are in the studio now
getting our next two singles done and putting the finishing touches on
our album do out late spring early summer if everything goes right.

Debra - We're are in the studio working on a PRIDE song (hint, hint,it's a secret...)

5) Do you enjoy performing live or being in the studio more?

Paulie
- Both...There is nothing like a live audience. The excitement is
overwhelming especially when they sing your song back to you. The
studio bring accomplishment. The next level so to speak as you ready to
introduce something new.

Debra -Singing live or in the studio
are both awesome experiences. Singing live is an emotional experience
-feeling the crowd and reaching out to them with our music. Singing in
the studio is inspirational. We are all working together and bringing
out the best of each other.

6) Who are some artists that have inspired your work?

Paulie
- For me as a child it was the Osmonds and the Jacksons of which I'm
still a big fan of. There are so many artist just to name a few...
Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Georgie Porgie, Pepper MaShay,
Jacinta, Lady Ga Ga, Yaz, Kate Bush, Madonna Just to name a few...

Debra
- There are too many to say..I feel like I'm leaving so many behind
...so let say that I'm most inspired by Madonna, Annie Lennox, Kate
Bush and Melissa Etheridge.

7) What is your favorite venue to play in NY City??

Paulie
- I don''t necessarily have a favorite venue but the performances which
had the most impact on me were at the legendary Stone Wall and the NYC
Gay Pride Parade.. Just the history alone of the Stonewall was enough
to leave a lasting impression. It was the 30 anniversary celebration.
We must never forget the significance and importance of that day. We
must never forget those who stood up so we can stand proudly today. The
place was packed and we were one of the privileged artist to perform.
I'll never forget how everyone reacted to "Come To My Window" It sends
chills down my spine till this day. The second wasn't necessarily a
venue so to speak. We were also privileged to perform on the Deet
Promotions, Music Plant float for the gay pride parade in NYC. That day
will forever stay with me. To go down Christopher Street with thousands
of people looking back at you. I'm getting teary eyed just thinking
about it. I never felt such a scene of pride in all my life.

Debra
- Like Paulie said the Stonewall & the NYC Pride Float. I can't
even put into words the energy that is felt when that float turns that
final corner in the heart of NYC Pride....it's unbelievable..

8) What are the future plans of Dare 2 B Dif'rnt?.

Paulie
- Right now we are concentrating on getting the album done. We are very
active in giving back to the less fortunate. We will be participating
in a benefit for the Staten Island Hospice and will perform with other
Deet Promotion Artists at the Domestic Violence March in Washington DC
October 6th.

Debra - The sky's the limit. Like Paulie said, we
are dedicated to helping others and there are many causes which we
support. Dare 2B Dif'rnt will always help those who need it. After all.
We want to help make a world full of love.

9) Any advice for other out artists?

Paulie
- There is something that was told to me by my good friend Pepper
MaShay that has stayed with me and I'd like to pass on. In short "Never
Give Up." She has survived and has been in this business for a long
time. Her resume is too long and impressive to list. I will never
forget the conversation we had. How she told me to hold my head up
high. Every one has there turn and one must never give up. It's a rough
business you must have and develop a thick skin. Hard work and
determination will pay off in the end. Keep doing what your doing for
the love of the music. Remember "United As One In Dance." That's the
best advice I could give.

Debra - Be true to yourself,be loyal
to those who've been there supporting you and enjoy the ride. Also,
always show love and respect to your fans. Realize that your fans are
your backbone and they can hold you up when things get difficult.

10) What is Dare 2 B Dif'rnt's fave Madonna song?

Paulie
- There are too many to list. However the one we sort of agreed upon
was.... Like A Prayer. The video was groundbreaking and the song is
inspirational. There is so much I respect and admire her for. Her
business savvy, her constant reinventing her self. her songs ,her sense
of style and so on and so on. She has never forgotten the GLBT
community. We must always stand by and support her and all GLBT
artists. On a different note, I would like to add that I miss Jeremy
Hovies who had a top 20 music show on Sirius. He was very influential
and exposed so many new GLBT artist. Someone needs to hire him.

Debra - Same as Paulie, plus I love "Frozen"

Let's face it, these two are rad!!!  Well thanks to JD Doyle for helping me with this!  Find more out artists at www.queermusicheritage.com and www.outmusic.com
Til next month!

This
Review is all about dance music which in case you did,nt know MM has
always been closeley linked and has been seen shaking his ass on the
dance floors of Great Britain, sometimes drunk sometimes sober either
way the dancings still pretty awesome. What I do know is this,I know
what I wanna hear on the dancefloor and I know what floats my boat and
I know what gets the hairs on the back of my kneck standing up..

So
here goes, this duo are based in Staten Island,New York and have been
making this music for a number of years. For more info go to www.myspace.com/d2bdmusic
The
Track is 'A World of Love' Extended Dj Keiroz Mix.I make no apologies
for breaking this review down, please note however the timings are
approx.

The Musics on and here,s how it went.....................

0 secs-Brilliant start to the track,Heavy Beat and a nice build up.

25sec-Great for Dancing the beat really in now,the tempos up and the vocals are creeping in 'I wanna feel' ,nice touch.

60secs-Instrumentation building up niceley

71secs,Very Nice touch indeed with the intro of keys.Im Loving it

86secs-Vocals are back in and sounding good. The backing is giving the vox a lift.

97secs-Again good instrumentation-nice touch all sounding good.

1.52-Male
Vox in,bit laid back for a dance tune in my opinion-needs Power and
Precision, this track is good, really good.Lets fill in the background
and help bang those vocals out.

2.28-Good Beat and its pumping in and helping re-inforce the Vox

2.40-Female
Vox now in, singing with the male, this is where the duo are at their
best when singing together.Nice touch-Excellent,Im Loving it.

2.56-Love the Instrumentation,Dancey,Catchy with a Great Beat

3.10-Instrumentation back in,Male vox going it alone, too laid back, good beat though and feeling pretty meaty.

3.46-The Beats up,Vox are sounding good, the powers up.

3.58-The duo are back again and sounding good.Yeh Yeh its good.

4.14-All sounding good, great Instrumentation, background and the vox touch are making you feel you wanna dance.

4.36-Good
Beat,male/female vox in again and the sound is good, nice touch with the
keys behind, the whole production is building niceley.

5.00-Sounding Good and Loving whats going on in the background.'I wanna feel'..sexy stuff hey...

5.25-Not necessary sounds like star wars, has no connection with the music.

5.40-All Good, punchy and powerful, get rid of star wars.

5.56-Great Rhythm,the beats good,the vocals are good

The track continues pretty repeating what has been heard already. This will keep you dancing to the end of this 7.20 track.

Folks
Im really intense with my reviews.Im the most intent listener and I do
believe in breaking music down in order for me and you to know what its
all about.

My
conclusion to the track is this...Brilliant track, ideal for the
European Dance floor, couple of instances where I felt the Male vox was
a bit too laid back, that may be a personal thing as Music Man Loves
Power.However all good stuff.

Rating for this track is Polished. We Loved it.We really did.

Best Wishes
MM x

DARE 2B DIFRNT RELEASES 2006 COMING OUT ANTHEM

The hot new single Please is an amazing collaboration between Hi-NRG international club veterans Dare 2B Dif'rnt (A World Of Love, Come To My Window) and popular remix/artists Liquid360 (Chains Of Love, Shake Down).  Destined to be a "Coming Out" anthem, the track recognizes a struggle of life for millions...'Please mom be proud of me, I'm the man I chose to be".  Musically the track also pays tribute to the classic Bronski Beat single Smalltown Boy - giving 'Please' an instant punch of familiarity. In addition to the production and remixing, Bruce from Liquid360 also makes a cameo vocal appearance with high falsettos and a classic verse from Smalltown Boy adding his touch of respect to Jimmy Somerville

Please was written for our Moms, basically telling them we love them. It must be hard being a parent and having to accept your child's differences and independence.  We are hoping everyone can benefit from this song because "Love" is universal, especially a Mother's unconditional love. We are hoping the Gay community in particular will benefit from our song because "Acceptance" is the key to our future. - Paulie D of Dare 2B Difrnt

Bronski Beats Smalltown Boy is a classic tale about a young man coming to terms with his sexuality and having to leave his home town to find acceptance.  Smalltown Boy remains a singular gesture of innocence, articulating the start of an era of unprecedented freedom for gays by showing their concerns to be integrated with society at large. (Mike Thorne, Bronski Beat Producer)  Dare 2B Difrnt initially had reservations about incorporating such a powerful and well known gay anthem but after consulting some influential DJs from that time, their worries were put to rest

Joey Shull, Legends Nightclub, was very encouraging. He said he still played Smalltown Boy and thought my idea would resonate with both a gay and straight audience because it came from my heart and was universal. Paulie D of Dare 2B Difrnt

Joseph Berliner sat me down and explained the importance of Smalltown Boy and how it affected his life and many of his friends. He actually dug in his crate and played it for me. He wanted me to experience its full depth and meaning.  He felt I would be adding to and not taking away from the original and that it could help and affect a whole new generation just like the original did. I never looked back after that day.   Paulie D of Dare 2B Difrnt

Please originally appeared on The Wedding Party compilation in July 2005 from Tone 1 Music Group which raised money for Gay Rights and Same Sex Marriage Initiatives.  The official single release of Please features remixes by Giuseppe D, Chris Brophy, Liquid 360 and original production by Chris "The Greek" Panaghi.  More information including full bio, pic and audio samples can be found at  www.myspace.com/d2bdmusic
