Happy Early Thanksgiving Everybody!
Who isn't hungover? Man, our third anniversary party was a smash and a half. Thanks to all of you who helped make it so fun. The bands ruled the night with outstanding performances from Mako Sica, Cacaw, Black Math, and of course Cave. Everyone involved gave it their all and we love them for it. Black Math's cover of the Anals track Commando Of Love was a major highlight of the night! Cacaw busted out several new and amazing songs, totally as fierce as you'd expect. Mako Sica's energy really set the mood for the night with their wonderful desert vibe and Cave closed it all out with, in our opinion, one of the best performances they've ever done. And that's saying a lot 'cause those dudes have been bringing it for years now. The addition of Jeremy on guitar and the tight sound culminating from a months long European tour made for one hell of a set. We are so proud to have had so many people come out to be a part of our special event and are more than grateful to have 3 sold years under our belt. It's all thanks to you guys and your solid support. We definitely couldn't have done it without out you. Much love and many thanks to you all!
Before we get into all the new releases and restocks, which we have plenty of this week, we'd like to get some important news out of the way. Firstly, we'll be closed on Thursday for the Thanksgiving holiday, but we'll re-open again on Friday, November 27th at 11am and everything will be 20% cheaper. That's right y'all, we're having a Customer Appreciation Sale! It's our way of saying thanks to all of you for making three wonderful years of business a reality for us. The sale is a 1 day only, Friday 11/27 and from 11am 'til 9pm, everything in the store and on our web store (keep your fingers crossed) will be 20% off. The sale includes all new and used items so come on down (after you wake up from the food coma), give the store a good once over, and take advantage of some sweet deals. You should definitely reward yourself for even thinking about giving anyone else a gift. 'Tis the season to love oneself, right (whoa!)? The sale ends Friday night, but the fun doesn't end there. We've got an incredible in-store lined up for Saturday, November 28th with those New Zealand weirdos Axemen and the Cave side-project Bitchin' Bajas. Axemen are doing a rare tour of the US in support of the Siltbreeze reissues with Times New Viking and we're super honored to be included as one of their stops on the tour. If you'd like to learn/hear more about the Axemen, please click here and then cruise on down on Saturday for the in-store. We're thankful to be hosting this in-store, shit, we're thankful to still be here serving you after 3 great years! Alright then, on to the goods.
This week has graciously laid upon us the awesomely sweet new Meercaz LP, an archival UK DIY LP by the (hmm...hmm) Scrotum Poles, a 2x10" Spacemen 3 vinyl reissue, copies of the difficult-to-find Cold Cave Cremations LP, the third pressing of Cave's Permanent LP release, a new Tape and LP by Fungi Girls, a bunch of new Trouble In Mind singles, the latest Jesu LP, and a tape by a new local punk band called Running. Read on for all the deets...
Like the Electric Bunnies LP did last week, the Meercaz LP knocked us out this week. Also, like the Electric Bunnies, you can't judge this record by it's cover. The shitty text and multiplied photo of a '70s dude with a sweet Afro had us assuming this was another slightly goofy, power-poppy rock LP. Boy, were our first impressions wrong. The Afro-clad dude on the cover is the man behind Meercaz, one Mr. Muslim Delgado (aka Mozzley, aka Muzz). No matter what you call him, this Portland-based Leader and Observer is en fuego. The last Leaders single was great, but Meercaz is where Muzz really shines. As you will hear when you put this record on the turntable and read when you begin to soak in the extensive, acid-laced liner notes by Ed Flowers (of Slippy Town), Meercaz plays an eclectic mix of proto-punk, psych, and instrumental, experimental DIY rock influenced by his very lucky childhood experiences of seeing Sun Ra at age 12 and borrowing Fun House from his mom's friend at 16. If only we all could've been so lucky! Muzz probably listens to more than his fair share of Kings of Oblivion-era Pink Fairies as well. Anyhow, folks who dig some of the less-obtuse NNF releases like Eternal Tapestry and Magic Lantern should be able to get into this release just as much as fans of DIY punk stuff like Swell Maps or the Clean. This one's quickly moving up our list of favorite releases of the year. Thanks, Tic Tac Totally for pressing this up on wax. Apparently, Gulcher did the CD and we totally missed it. As you could probably imagine, this LP comes with our highest recommendation.
Another record you won't want to pre-judge is the Scrotum Poles LP on Dulc-i-tone. Debatably one of the worst band names ever, Scrotum Poles are, surprisingly, not a goofball contemporary punk band. These Poles, actually from Scotland, existed from 1979-1980, put out a few self-released cassette tapes in ridiculously small quantities, released a well received, and now quite valuable singles and then called it quits. Typical, huh? Anyways, the Scrotum Poles tapes have been transferred, cleaned-up, and mastered by none other than Weasel Walter and are now available on wax as the Auchmithie Forever LP. Fans of UK DIY and the Clean will definitely dig the Scrotum Poles.
Spacemen 3 are one of our favorite bands of all time. We here at Permanent feel that no record collection, no matter how deep or shallow, is complete until it includes at least one Spacemen 3 record. The Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To is a nice gateway, uh... drug, into the Spacemen 3 repertoire. All of these tracks are included on other more fully realized albums, but we're especially fond of the versions of said songs on this disc. Anyhow, although most of the Spacemen 3 catalog has been (mostly) readily available on CD for ages, Spacemen 3 vinyl has been tragically difficult to come by. Other than the DJ Tones import 12" and the Wooden Shjips split 7" that we received, discussed, and quickly sold out of earlier this year, we haven't been graced by the presence of any Spacemen 3 vinyl since we opened in 2006. Well, all of that is about to change, in the very near future. This week we received Taang's double 10" reissue of Playing With Fire, Spacemen 3's 1989 tranced-out swan song. Playing With Fire is an excellent example of the group's minimalism being maximilism mentality and it includes some of their greatest material. The epic synth jam Suicide is included here as is the incredibly stone-y Revolution. This 2x10" reissue also includes 4 bonus tracks worth hearing, especially notable are the Suicide cover and the 12+ minute live version of Suicide. Obviously, the Spacemen had a slight obsession with Suicide, huh? Yup. Anyhow, this is just the first in a series of Spacemen 3 reissues coming down the pipe. Taang will also be reissuing the Spacemen 3 classic LPs Sound of Confusion and Perfect Prescription with bonus material in the very near future and the UK label Fire will be handling the same reissues (sans bonus tracks) as well the epic live album, Performance. Thanks to whomever did the rain dance to end the Spacemen 3 vinyl drought; we're loving the storm. By the way, we found a local source for the out-of-print Spacemen 3 DJ Tones import 12" previously mentioned and we scored a handful of copies at a decent rate for those of you who missed out on the short lived opportunity to pick one of those up. We probably don't have to say this after all of that, but we'd never not recommend a Spacemen 3 release. Get 'em all, while you can.
Fans of Spacemen 3 and other stoner-friendly bands, will definitely want to take the new Naam 2xLP for a trip. We featured Naam's debut self-released LP a few months back and we've been selling it like hotcakes ever since. Fans of U.S. Christmas, Magic Lantern, and White Hills have been floored by Kingdom. Some folks around here even commented on the fact that it sounds like something on Tee Pee. Shortly after we heard Kingdom we contacted the band about future releases and guess what they told us? We have a double LP coming out on Tee Pee in the fall. Weird, we know. Well the time has come and the new Naam 2xLP is in our hands (and frequently on our turntable). It's (obviously) longer than the debut LP and the longer format allows Naam the time to stretch out their jams and get hypnotically trance-y, but there's some barn burners on the eponymous Tee Pee release as well. Naam sounds like a less drone-y Om record or a slower, less intense Earthless record. It's filed heavy, repetetive stoner rock grooves for days with some echo-y vocals. Fans of the aforementioned bands will definitely dig, as will fans of Wooden Shjips, Hawkwind, and Black Sabbath. Highly recommended. Side note: Earthless, U.S. Christmas, and Baroness are playing at Reggie's Rock Club here in Chicago this Wednesday, November 25th. If you haven't seen Earthless, please do yourself a favor and go to this show. They'll wrinkle your brain.
Another out-of-print record we surprisingly found some copies of is Cold Cave's noisiest jam, the fantastically dark Cremations LP. Prior to the Matador deal, Hospital Productions released Cremations on CD and LP. This record is a collection of early/unreleased/cassette-only and out-of-print material. (Ie. Cold Cave's long out-of-print Painted Nails ep is included here). Cremations is Cold Cave at is darkest, just the way we like it and this LP comes with our highest recommendation.
Speaking of Caves, we put out a couple records by a warmer, more groove-laden cave, Cave. Yeah, you know, Chicago's best psychedelic rock band. If you don't, do yourself a favor and surf your ass over to Cave's myspace page and try not to start bobbing your head. Cave plays hypnotic space rock better than just about anybody else out there. Anyhow, way back in 2007, a little burgeoning label out of Chicago (uh, us) released Cave's debut LP, entitled Hunt Like Devil/Jamz. We quickly ran through the first batch of 500 copies and repressed another 500 for European distro. Unfortunately, due to some circumstances beyond our control, the Euro distro deal was severely botched, and due to domestic demand, we distributed the majority of the second pressing stateside. Well, we ran through those and we've repressed for a third time. If this release has somehow flown under yr radar, we highly recommend picking a copy up now. Since their humble, loosely organized beginnings, Cave has tightened up, settled on a firm line-up, toured Europe, released a couple of singles on overseas labels, and released a their second full-length on the venerable Important Records imprint. If the Important release is the only record you're familiar with, we definitely recommend checking out Cave's formative years. Hunt Like Devil/Jamz includes some of Cave's best and rawest material and the Cave / California Raisins split 10" bridges the sonic gap between the two full-lengths. Both of these releases are available currently and include CDs for your listening convenience. Also available currently, is a brand new Cave cassette tape entitled Brah Vibes Vol. II. This limited edition tour-only cassette includes tracks off of the out-of-print Trensmat and Static Caravan 7"s and two unreleased jams. One of which is a new studio track called "Hot Bricks" the second is a live version of a new track titled Encino Mang recorded at Grady's Record Refuge in June 2009. That's Grady from Monoshock's record store, y'all. Recommended, even for those of you who already own the import singles, if only for the unreleased tracks. Highly recommended for those of you who missed out on those short lived import singles, for all these awesome jams. When we say jams, we mean jamz, y'all.
San Francisco seems to be a hotbed for some of the best underground music these days. Hot on SF's heels is Texas. No particular town in Texas, but lately we've been talking a lot about bands from the second biggest state in the nation. Woven Bones got the border-state communiqué rolling and a couple weeks ago we got all excited about another Texas band, Low Red Center. The featured Texas band of the week is Fungi Girls. They share a love of the Jesus and Mary Chain with Woven Bones and a lack of girls with all the other numerous bands with girls in their name that don't include any actual girls. These dudes debut full-length, Seafaring Pyramids sounds a bit like JAMC on cough syrup and we're digging it. There's loads of feedback and catchy hooks, but there's a looser vibe to the songs than JAMC or Woven Bones have ever displayed. Seafaring Pyramids is a very promising debut indeed. The best part is that it's available on LP and cassette tape! Choose yr own adventure. Speaking of Woven Bones, we've scored the last of The Minus Touch 12" EPs from the label (they might be gone by the time you read this) and a handful of the Janie 7"s on Needless Records and both have been featured and recommended in these updates in the past. Viva la Tejas!
Texas has some cool shit going on for sure, but SF will never let us have an update without discussing at least one of it's bands. This week, thanks to the fine folks over at Trouble in Mind, we have a nice batch of 4 new singles, two of which are SF bands. Charlie and the Moonhearts and Ty Segall used to play together in the Epsilons. We like them both better post-Epsilons. Charlie and the Moonhearts' Tic Tac Totally 7" will most likely end up on our best singles of the year list and Ty's full-length will likely be up there on the LP list as well. Anyhow, if you thought you'd heard the last from either of these artists this year, think again. Both of their new TIM singles are rippers and the Ty single even includes an Ech-xtra special cover that's not listed on the labels. The other two new Trouble in Mind singles are from local garage poppers Tyler Jon Tyler and Ohio's energetic rock'n'rollers Wheels On Fire, respectively. So much for that sweet Cream cover band name idea we had in mind. I guess we'll have to go with (Not So) Fresh Cream, now. Unless we can come up with a clever pun involving the title Disraeli Gears, that is. Kidding, of course. Keep up the good work Trouble in Mind, you're off to a great start.
We've been meaning to mention the new Jesu LP, but haven't gotten around to it until now. Opiate Sun is the latest and it's filled with pummeling, heavy, slow and epically beautiful songs from former Godflesh-er Justin Broadrick's new(er) project, Jesu. This one's got the head bangers good and confused... heavy enough to bum out your parents but what's that? Pretty sung vocals! So sad and weary. Highly Recommended!!!!
On the cassette tape front, we have a new tape by a new local band called Running. We just saw these guys for the first time at their second show here in Chicago and they were fucking intense. The dudes in this band have previously been involved with PissPissPissMoanMoanMoan, Parsley Flakes, and Loto Ball Show, but Running doesn't sound like any of those bands. Running sounds to us like Clockcleaner if they played twice as fast, shorter songs. Reverbed to hell vocals, pummeling drum and bass parts, and abrasive, feedback-heavy guitar recorded on a four-track. This tape is mega lo-fi, but it rips. Keep yr eyes peeled for the next Running show and we'll see you there. Until then, revel in the lo-fidelity of this tape.
Loads of sweet items from recent updates have arrived this week. The list includes, but is certainly not limited to, the new Electric Bunnies and Washed Out LPs. The entirety of the list can be reviewed below as can the entire lists of new releases and recently acquired used items.
Speaking of used items, we were just voted the Best Place To Sell Your Used CDs by New City here in Chicago and we'd like to take this opportunity to remind you that we're always on the hunt for quality used LPs, CDs, DVDs, and Books. We buy/sell/trade everyday of the week without appointment and we're more than happy to make a house call if the collection is too large to transport on your own. If you have a collection you think we might be interested in, large or small, bring it by the shop or drop us a line and we'll discuss the details.
In case you find more than you can carry comfortably the next time you're in the shop, we'd like to remind you that we have the locally designed and printed Permanent Life is Short..Buy More Records Grim Reaper Tote Bags for a mere $6.66. They're white ink on black canvas and the strap is long enough to not have to carry your records like a purse, which is a manly bonus, but not so long that the lovely ladies (who love Cool J) can't carry it any way they want. Basically, we're saying that this tote is unisex and universally useful. It'll hold records, groceries, drugs, whathaveyou. And it costs less than something that costs $7.

Permanent Records Update 11.17.09
Hi Everybody!
It's been over 3 years since we got this whole thing rolling and it's time to celebrate. We've been talking about this for a few weeks now, but time passes fast and the event is upon us. This Saturday, November 21st we'll be celebrating our Third Anniversary at the Hideout (1354 W Wabansia Ave ) with Cave, Cacaw, Black Math, and Mako Sica. The entry fee is a meager 5 bucks and we'll have gift certificates to give away and other tasty prizes to sweeten the deal. There will most likely be some other special treats as well. Tickets may be pre-ordered online here. If you don't get your tickets ahead of time, we recommend getting to the venue early to guarantee entry as last year's Anniversary Jam sold out early and some unlucky souls were left standing out in the cold. Bummer! Show starts at 9pm sharp and ends around Midnight. Hope to see you all there, inside, where it's warm, cozy, and noisy. In other Permanent news, we have a brand new label release ready to go. The tenth release in our catalog (double-digits, yo!) is a lo-fi, blown-out psych LP from Philadelphia's Purling Hiss. We'll discuss PERM-010 further below.
In addition to the new Permanent label release, this week we'll be discussing the new Feeling of Love one-sided 12", the new Twin Stumps LP, a couple of Ex albums on vinyl, two new Florida's Dying LPs, the new Pop. 1280 7", a couple of analog synth-heavy, horror film soundtrack influenced releases, two new Plustapes releases, the vinyl version of Disappears' full-length, the new Girls At Dawn 12" EP, and the unexpected new Bassholes LP.
Purling Hiss is the solo side-project of Michael Polizze. Full-time, Mike is the guitarist in Birds of Maya which released an LP on Holy Mountain a year or so ago that totally ruled. Birds of Maya do full-on psych similar to the way Earthless does it, but maybe more heavily influenced by Cream or Blue Cheer than Hawkwind and Krautrock, and their record was much more lo-fi than Rhythms From a Cosmic Sky. Apparently, Birds just aren't full-on enough to satisfy Pollize's far-out tendencies. On his debut solo record, Pollize plays bass, drums, and guitar, relentlessly, as if he's playing to save his life. This recording is so intense that the pressing plant told us they'd risk breaking their equipment if they cut the lacquers with the original master. We sent 'em a new master and the result sounds great! The LP contains 6 jams, 3 longer, repetitive, blown-out psych jams, and 3 shorter more experimental noisy pieces. All 6 will blow yr mind. It's one of our releases, so obviously we're gonna recommend it, but Purling Hiss is especially recommended for fans of Birds of Maya, Earthless, Loop, High Rise, Les Rallizes Denudes, and Lo-Fi, Blown-Out Psych. Feel free to preview 3 of the songs from the eponymous Purling Hiss LP at his MySpace Page and 1 track on ours. We pressed a total of 328 copies of this record, of which, 109 were pressed on Grimace Purple vinyl. These colored vinyl copies will be available only directly from us or the band. Once the colored copies are gone, we'll start selling the 219 black copies. Digital download codes are included with each and every one.
The French band Feeling of Love did an in-store with Cheveu a year or so ago. We've since released records by Cheveu and another French band, the Anals. In our minds, French rock has got it going on these days. The new Feeling of Love record is the latest bit of proof that this is actually the case. We previously filed Feeling of Love in the bluesy garage rock portions of our brains, but their new release has us scrambling to find a new place to put them. We'll eventually settle on filing them near the intense noise rock sector. They're sounding much more brutal, nihilistic, and noisy these days. Suck/Soul/Porn is a one-sided 12" EP on the local HBSP-2X label we love so much. It's comprised of 3 tracks entitled The Way To Suck, Soul Track, and I Hate Porn, hence the title. Soul Track and the Halo of Kitten (feat. Tom Hazelmeyer of AmRep and Halo of Flies and Julie Cafritz of Free Kitten) cover I Hate Porn are both great tracks, don't get us wrong. In any other context, we'd be specifically touting them. Unfortunately, this record kicks off with The Way to Suck which is one of the best songs we've heard all year, period. The AmRep influence shows, for sure. It's a repetitive, textured noise rock jam for the ages. Instant classic, we say. Desert island jukebox pick, for sure. Holy shit, it's fucking amazing. If you thought you heard the best song of the year already, you're going to have to listen to The Way To Suck before making your final decision. It's so intense, so repetitive, so feedback-laden, so awesome. The track jumps off the grooves and punches in the groin like nothing we've heard in a long, long time. This release is limited to 500 pentagram-etched b-side copies and the label says there will be no repress, ever, so you'll have to act fast if you want to own this fine piece of wax. By the way, if you need more French weirdness in your life, the Anals and Cheveu LPs on Permanent are still available.
Fans of brutal noise rock will also want to check out the latest Twin Stumps LP if you haven't already. Their LP on Dais is their debut and it's totally raw. Fans of Rusted Shut, Drunkdriver, FNU Ronnies, and noise rock in general will definitely want to check out this intense slab.
The Ex is a Dutch anarcho post-punk band that's been around 1979. In celebration of their 30th anniversary, they've reissued a classic record on vinyl and put together a sweet double LP collection of material that spans their catalog. The Ex are one of the best post-punk bands, just as seminal as Public Image Ltd, Gang of Four, the Fall, Wire, etc. Their music must be heard. In a perfect world, The Ex would have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame years ago. As you can see, we're big fans of the Ex around here and we think they deserve some attention. For years, Ex vinyl has been very hard to come by. Come to think of it, the CDs weren't exactly readily available either, but we digress. Ex vinyl, specifically, has been particularly tough to find. Now, thanks to these reissues, you can now own Ex vinyl for a reasonable sum. The double LP entitled 30 is a great starting point as it contains select songs from each of the Ex albums from 1980 to 2006 and the best part of the Ex is that they've remained relevant and interesting over the years. They've been staunchly independent (both of these LPs are on their own label) and resisted any urge to go mainstream. If you're not already familiar with the Ex catalog, we recommend starting here. However, we wouldn't recommend stopping there as the Ex catalog is vast and varied and Scrabbling at the Lock is one of their best records. In 1991, the Ex collaborated with cellist Tom Cora and the result became the stunning Scrabbling at the Lock LP which has been out-of-print on vinyl since it's original release. It's finally back in print and we couldn't be more excited about it. Like the Faust IV LP we mentioned a couple weeks ago, Scrabbling... is one we've been searching for for years. It's a total classic and nothing else sounds quite like it. We only got a handful of each of these titles and apparently that's all we'll be able to get. Both of these records are also available on CD and both come with our highest recommendation.
Florida's Dying laid two highly anticipated LPs on us this week: the Electric Bunnies' Through the Magic Door and the Jacuzzi Boys' No Seasons. Both records are the debut full-length by each of these Florida bands and we wanna tell you all about 'em. When you drop the needle on Through the Magical Door you feel like you've been invited in. The jams contained within are unlike anything we've heard recently. Electric Bunnies are wise beyond their name and their influences must be eclectic to say the least. There are tunes on this record that wouldn't sound out of place next to the Oh Sees on a contemporary garage rock comp, there's some Spacemen 3-esque repetitive psych jams, a couple of Velvets-y Venus In Furs-style weird-outs, a Jesus and Mary Chain feedback laden song or two, and a couple of meditative raga-type jams as well. Blown away by the description? Just wait til you hear the record. This thing is off the hook and quickly working it's way up to the top of our best of '09 list and we haven't even gotten around to the packaging yet. The collage artwork on the gatefold jacket was created by the Lucha Workshop and it's a trip as well. It doesn't necessarily match the music contained within, but we're not holding that against the Electric Bunnies. It seems to us like this is their attempt at a concept album. As you open the gatefold jacket you find a game board and perforated game pieces. We haven't played the game yet, but it looks to work like a simplified version of Chutes and Ladders or the game of Life where all roads lead to Lose. Different spots on the game board suggest gagging yourself, spinning until you're dizzy, airing your grievances, and admitting you're a racist among other things. Rock'n'roll purists would definitely consider this cheesy and possibly lame, but we see the glass as half full. We think the Electric Bunnies are simply having fun and attempting to get listeners to lighten up. If Through the Magical Door wasn't such a fantastic record, we'd say Shut the hell up and get the hell out of here with your bullshit board game. You aren't the fucking Beatles and this isn't 1969. Lucky for us, this record is fucking amazing and we say Pass the dice, man. It's my turn to roll.
Jacuzzi Boys was a bit less of a surprise, but no less enjoyable. These dudes already have a few solid singles to their name and the LP plays out just as good or better than the combined sum of those singles ( Island Ave. from the HoZac single is actually included here as well). These guys do the grimy, garage psych thing just as good as anyone else in the same field today. It's surprising that they're not from San Francisco. Fans of the SF garage scene will definitely want to take notice.
Pop. 1280 is a new NY-based rock band named after a 1946 crime fiction novel and their debut 7" is super sweet. It's got a dark, repetitive, AmRep rock vibe, but it's not lo-fi like so much other stuff we've been enjoying lately. Bedbugs is particularly enjoyable and comes recommended, especially for fans of Cop Shoot Cop and Birthday Party.
Also highly enjoyable is the Umberto tape we recently scored from Sonic Meditations. Sonic Meditations is Justin Wright of Expo 70's imprint and Umberto is the solo side-project of Expo 70's bass/synth player. Umberto is bass and synth-heavy, but not in the psychedelic drone-y way that Expo 70 is. Far from it actually, Umberto (presumably named after Italian horror film director, Umberto Lenzi) sounds like the soundtrack to one of his namesake's films, but better. The From the Grave... tape is a dark analog dance party in a jewel case. We had this tape pumpin' in the car on Halloween night and we felt like B movie stars. We've played it here in the shop and most people who asked us about it couldn't believe it wasn't at least 20 years old. Pick one up for yourself and you'll see what we mean. Also heavily influenced by '80s B movie soundtracks, but in a more ominous, John Carpenter way, is the new Gatekeeper Optimus Maximus 12". This Chicago-based duo's vinyl debut is also the debut release on Kompakt's new subsidiary imprint, Fright. Optimus Maximus is worth totally checking out and available as a limited hand-numbered, grey-marbled vinyl edition of 300 copies while supplies last. Also in the same dance-y, synthy, and limited realm is the new Washed Out LP on Mexican Summer. Get 'em here while they last.
Plustapes is at it again. This time we have two new tapes from Chicago based artists Plastic Crimewave Sound and Detholz! The Plastic Crimewave Sound tape is a collaborative recording with Djin Aquarian of the legendary Father Yod Source Family / Ya Ho Wha 13 collective on guitar. Recorded in Chicago and New York in 2008, the Live Yod Devotions tape is a terrifically noisy, psychedelic jammer, through and through. Recommended far-out, improvised sounding jams, for sure. The Detholz! release is a double tape box of f'ed-up covers of pop songs by the likes of Rush, Eddy Grant, Van Halen, Genesis, Johnny Cash, John Lennon. Totally ridiculous, but done in a slightly endearing weirdo kinda way. Speaking of Plustapes, they released the Disappears Live Over the Rainbo (not technically a live recording) a while back and we've been digging it ever since. Well, another local label, Rococo Records stepped up and pressed the same recording on wax, which we're stoked about because our copy of the tape is nearly worn out. If you're not already familiar with Disappears (one of our favorite local bands, featuring Brian Case of the Ponys), you can hear their repetitive, reverb-y rock jams here. If you like what you hear, pick up the LP from us or when they open for the Jesus Lizard at the Metro on New Year's Eve! Also, the Hollows tape that Plustapes released is officially out-of-print, but fret not friends, the Plustapes vinyl arm is releasing the Hollows tape on wax in the very near future.
Another reverb-heavy release we've been digging this week is the debut 12" by Brooklyn's Girls At Dawn. Their HoZac 7" totally knocked us out and we're stoked to hear more. They do the throwback, but still contemporary, multi-part harmonies, girl group thing just as well, if not better, than the Vivian Girls and this release is further proof that they're a great band. We wouldn't be surprised if they were striking a deal with In the Red or Matador right now. The 12" is short and only contains 4 songs, but they're great songs and if you liked the 7" or dig this sort of thing in general, we'd suggest picking this one up.
While we're on the subject of In the Red and Matador, let's talk about Columbus, Ohio's Bassholes (feat. Don Howland of Great Plains and Gibson Bros.). They put out a bunch of records with In the Red and at least one LP with Matador back in the '90s. Bassholes played arty, lo-fi garage punk stuff that's totally stood the test of time. Long Way Blues: 1996-1998 is recommended listening for sure. Bassholes were a versatile band too. They could hang with the best of 'em in the loud, blown-out, garage arena, but write excellent minimal acoustic blues songs as well. We assumed Bassholes were long gone, until we received notice from Columbus Discount Records, that they were releasing a new Bassholes record. Well folks, Archive Series – Vol. 7 ...and without a name is here and Bassholes are sounding great as ever. Since all they're vinyl releases are currently out-of-print, we'd recommend starting here.
We also restocked the Austrian import Oh Sees Blood In Your Ear 7", the No One Left Behind and Staring Down the Barrel unknown punk LP comps, and a whole bunch more. We've also reloaded the recent arrivals LP and 7" bins with some super sweet used records and so keep an eye on the Restock list below to check out even more recent arrivals. Come on in and see for yourself, or hit up our newfangled web store.
We hope to see you all out the Hideout this Saturday for our anniversary party. And THANK YOU ALL for 3 amazing years. We couldn't have done it without cha!

2009 has been a crazy year. This year's new release season has been massive. It seems like we're bombarded with great new releases and amazing reissues every week. We also recently launched our web store (which involved a serious amount of back end, data-entry labor and general technological frustration). We're basically a bunch of record loving luddites living in an increasingly technological world. (Write that song, Madonna!) Anyhow, we're trying our best to keep up with everything and make our small independent record shop better for those of you who continually support us. As time goes on, we promise to be more and more attentive and thorough. In the meantime, we hope you'll bear with us. We're currently working hard to make the web store more user friendly and informative. It'll only get better from here, promise. We'll also continue to do our best to try and communicate our impressions on each week's batch of new releases. That said, we're ready to present our weekly recommendations, some of them brand new, some a week or two old, but we think all of them are solid and deserve some attention. Here's to hoping you agree.
The featured items in this week's update include the new Drunks With Guns reissue cassette tape, the very limited Spacemen 3 / Wooden Shjips split 7", a Colorado punk comp not unlike the You Weren't There soundtrack, Crime's San Franscisco's STILL Doomed CD/LP reissues, another sweet Mississippi records blues reissue, a brand new Flight 10", the new Fresh & Onlys / Dan Melchior split 7", a new minimal synth 7" by Low Red Center, a 2xLP Soul Comp / Photography Book from Numero Group, a new Tinariwen CD+DVD, the new Harvey Milk live LP, and so much more. Please read on for all the pertinent information.
Drunks With Guns were a nihilistic, noise rock / dumb punk band from St. Louis in the mid-80s. Their self-titled LP from 1987 included 9 songs worth of Brainbombs-meets- Flipper style punk with titles like Dick in One Hand..., Punched in the Head, and Wonderful Subdivision. This band is legendary and there's loads of rumor and heresy surrounding the legend. The band formed in 1984, released about a half-dozen singles and a couple LPs, played four shows and called it quits (well, in the same way Chrome called it quits anyway. The original singles and the LPs (and even the Complete Drunks With Guns tape) are virtually impossible to find these days. Among others, Monty Buckles of the Lamps is a big fan of the DWG and he wrote an excellent article in the last issue of Z-Gun that we definitely recommend reading at some point. Anyhow, we've reissued the Drunks With Guns self-titled LP in an edition of 100 tapes and they're ready for consumption. This tape ain't no bootleg neither. We actually took the time to get in touch with Mike Doskocil, the singer from Drunks With Guns and got permission for the release. We were hoping to do an LP reissue, but apparently the master tapes are in unusable condition. Don't fret, these tapes were professionally dubbed and the fidelity is about as good as your gonna get out of a cassette tape (read: they sound like they should, especially for a Drunks With Guns release). Don't have a cassette deck? What better excuse to get one than a Drunks With Guns tape! Tape decks are littering thrift stores everywhere. Save them from the landfills and enjoy some of the sweet jams that have been issued on the cassette tape format lately, there have been some great ones! Fans of Brainbombs, Flipper, and all things noise rock will definitely want to snatch one of these up before their gone.
Another record that will disappear quickly, if they aren't already gone by the time you read this is the 50th release on Great Pop Supplement, a Wooden Shjips / Spacemen 3 split 7". Wooden Shjips cover Spacemen 3's 1988 cut I Believe It and the Spacemen side is the unreleased demo version of Big City. We consider any release by either of these bands essential and these won't last long so we won't say any more. This release was exclusively released in the UK, limited to 1000 copies, received no stateside distro, and we were only able to procure 15 copies directly from the band. If we could've got more, we surely would've. As far as we know, Aquarius Records in SF is the only other shop that has these and they're already sold out. Feel free not to buy this, you'll make someone else very happy. These are limited to ONE COPY PER CUSTOMER. Many thanks to Ripley from Wooden Shjips for providing us with the copies we have for sale. He and his bands are the bee's knees. Please take the time to listen to Wooden Shjips and his side-project, Moon Duo, if you haven't already. They're two of the best bands going these days and we'll always have their records and CDs in stock.
Those of you turned on by the You Weren't There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-1984 soundtrack LP will be excited to hear that we've scored a handful of the Colorado equivalent entitled Rocky Mountain Low – The Colorado Musical Underground of the Late 1970s. There's no DVD involved, but the package includes 2 LPs, a full-color 24-page booklet, and a copy of the record on CD all housed in a beautiful gatefold jacket. We've really been digging this one, but we'll let Byron Coley and Thurston Moore take it from here: "This 2 LP set is an insanely great insider's view of the Colorado underground scene of the late '70s. We'd never even heard rumors about half the bands here, but Joseph Pope was an active participant, and along with Dalton Rasmussen he pulled together a great set of unreleased nuggets from demos, rehearsal tapes & whatnot. Like lotsa scenes in their early days, the sounds here are heterogeneous -- '60s style Pop, hard Garage, weird experimentalism and Brit-damaged lunge are all part of the mix, just as they were in the day. The book/zine included is a great blend of history, attitude, crappy-looking fliers and the best picture of Jello Biafra you will ever see in this lifetime (or any other). Every town deserves this kind of deep investigation. Superb shit." Obviously, this release is highly recommended.
Crime's San Francisco's STILL Doomed has been reissued on CD and LP! Here's why we think this is significant. Self-proclaimed as "San Francisco's first and only rock n'roll band", CRIME were the first west coast punk band to release a single, the classic Hotwire My Heart b/w Baby You're So Repulsive in 1976. Alternate takes of those two songs are included here, along with demos recorded in 1978 and 1979. The sound quality is terrific and the playing is tight and ferocious. It has nothing to do with what turned into west coast hardcore, but instead shares a weirdo edge with other SF bands like Flipper and Frightwig, albeit with a more pronounced traditional or rockabilly edge. As they only recorded three singles and never got to cut a real full-length, this is as close as we're gonna get to a proper album by them. These reissues [of a 1990's CD compilation] came out in 2004 on John Reis' (of Drive Like Jehu / Hot Snakes) Swami label and disappeared instantly. It's nice to have them back in print. And if we were you, we'd grab one now before this document of seminal Cali punk disappears again.
Oh man, Mississippi's at it again. If it seems like we're discussing the Portland-based Mississippi Records just about every week these days, that's because we are. They've been laying new records on us more regularly than ever over the past couple months and we couldn't be more excited about it. A couple of weeks ago we listed an Arhoolie blues reissue from Bahaman guitarist, Joseph Spence. Well, this week we have yet another Arhoolie reissue, this time from legendary bluesman, (Mississippi) Fred McDowell. The recordings on the eponymous reissue date from 1965 during the height of the 'blues revival' era, and this LP is the best of his many records after his 're-discovery'. McDowell was unique in that his style - though influenced by Charley Patton and Son House [with whom he was old enough to be contemporaries of both] - was neither fully Delta blues, nor fully North Mississippi hill-country blues, but instead somewhere in-between. This was recorded by Chris Strachwitz and originally released on Strachwitz' Arhoolie label in 1966. Recommended for hardcore blues fans, especially fans of old-school acoustic country blues. Keep 'em coming Mississippi! We just can't get enough.
Speaking of Mississippi, that's where Flight's from. Their debut 7" was issued recently on the Canadian label, Sweet Rot. It's a fantastic record of up-beat weird punk jams and we definitely recommend looking into that release, but that's old news. The new news is that Flight is back, this time on the also trustworthy Kill Shaman label, with a brand new 10". If you dug the 7", you're definitely going to want to pick up the 10". It's got the same sort of vibe to it, but more songs. And who doesn't want more and more and more and more?
Another up-beat punk record can be found in the recently acquired Fresh & Onlys / Dan Melchior und Das Menace split 7". Both bands bring their A-game on this one and it's a great place for the curious to start getting familiar and for old fans to catch up with what these two artists have been up to lately (because it's been sooo long since either of these artists have released anything). 2009 has totally been the year for bands to release a shit ton of records, hasn't it? We won't be forgetting about bands like the Fresh & Onlys and Dan Melchior und Das Menace anytime soon, especially if they keep putting out records this good. Volar Records is responsible for this one, y'all.
Low Red Center's 10" has been virtually stuck to our turntable since the S-S package arrived a few weeks back. That's back in stock, by the way, and ready to be loved. Also ready to be loved is the new Low Red Center Momentary Switch 7" on Answering Machine Records. We dug the 10" so much that we contacted the band directly in order to score some of these. Unfortunately, these are the only vinyl offerings from the band currently. We hope to see more soon. In the meantime, we're stoked to have another slab of minimal synth jams to tide us over. The songs on the 7" are very similar to those included on the S-S release, but both are lighter and more upbeat than the 10". Momentary Switch was pressed on swirled colored vinyl and the sleeves are of varying colors and were hand screen-printed. Only 200 of these exist and you know how long those won't last.
The Numero Group does it again. You had to wonder how anything could top their Local Customs: Downriver Revival set [or the amazing Twinight's Lunar Rotation box] but the Light: On The South Side box set is extravagant and then some. It's a 12"x12" slipcase that contains a 132-page hardcover book with 100 black & white plates featuring images of the long-gone Pepper's Hideout, Perv's House, The Patio Lounge, and other late-night joints on the South Side of Chicago c.1975-1977. The lovingly shot photos were the work of Michael Abramson, and the focus is on the patrons of these clubs, not the bands. The double-LP that accompanies the book contains a selection of vintage Chicago dusties that's representative of what would have been on the jukebox[es] in said clubs at the time. It's blues and soul with grit and a funky edge, and the original 45s themselves are beyond rare these days. The inner sleeves for the LPs are crammed full with liner notes and label scans. And to top it all off, the introduction in the book is written by novelist Nick Hornby ( High Fidelity). Both the book and the double-LP could each stand alone, but to have them in a package together where they complement each other is absolutely wonderful. This is an audio and visual snapshot of a slice of Chicago that no longer exists and one of the finest releases we'll likely see all year.
We absolutely loved last year's Aman Iman: Water is Life by Tinariwen. Their show at the Old Town School of Folk this year was mind blowingly awesome. These guys have been bridging the gap between rock music and traditional African structure since the late '70s and it shows. They've perfected their art. For those unfamiliar:
Tinariwen (Tamashek: "The deserts", plural of "ténéré" meaning "desert") is a band of Tuareg musicians from the Sahara Desert region of northern Mali. Formed in 1979, they rose to prominence in the 1980s as the pied pipers of a new political and social conscience in the southern Sahara, and the icons of a whole generation of young Touareg living in exile in Algeria and Libya. In the early 2000s Tinariwen started to gain a following outside Africa, first in the world music community, and then in the wider rock scene, thanks to frequent tours and appearances at major festival in Europe and the USA. After releasing their second CD album "Amassakoul" in 2004 they become one of the most successful African groups in the world, and won several prestigious awards. They sing about the suffering and exile of their people, the semi-nomadic Kel Tamashek of the southern Sahara, and about their beauty of the desert home.
Tinariwen's back with their follow-up to Aman Iman and it's a doozy. Imidiwan: Companions is a great introduction to Tinariwen, especially because it's packaged with a nicely done documentary with live and studio footage, band member interviews, and some amazing shots of the Sahara thrown in for context. The DVD alone is worth the cost of the CD. Click here for a short clip from the DVD. This timeless instant classic comes highly recommended!
Another one of the best shows of the year was Harvey Milk's performance at Subterranean after Pitchfork this year. These guys have been killing in relative obscurity for over 20 years now, but some of their best work has been released just recently. Their latest full-length studio album, Life... The Best Game In Town is an absolutely stunning stoner rock jam. They played a lot of the material off of that record at the Subterranean show and they knocked it out of the park. Ever since then, we've been saying how cool it'd be if Harvey Milk would release a live album. Well, our wish is our command. We've now got not only a LIVE Harvey Milk LP, but a reasonably priced Harvey Milk LP, and one that features the mighty Joe Preston [ Melvins, Thrones, High On Fire] to boot. And this thing is a stone killer. Highlights are their cover of We Destroy The Family by Fear [from The Singles LP], and a blistering Led Zeppelin-turned-inside-out version of Lay My Head Down [from The Pleaser]. It was recorded at the UK Supersonic Fest in 2008 and the sound quality is near pristine. Live is available as a one-time limited edition vinyl-only pressing on piss-yellow vinyl. Super-recommended!
We realize this update's getting a bit lengthy, so we'll try to abbreviate. Some other recommended recent releases include the God's Gift Pathology 1979-1984 anthology CD, Rockcelona La Bruja CD/LP reissue, the Ouaga Affair: Hard Won Sounds of the Upper Volta 1974-1978 LP comp, the new Cold Cave releases (CD/LP, 12" EP), the Twin Stumps LP (absolute noise rock killer), the Nirvana "Bleach" CD/LP reissues, the Boris At Last -Feedbacker- LP reissue, the new Devo Are We Not Men? and Freedom of Choice CD/LP reissues, the new King Khan & BBQ Show CD/LP. We hope to get time to write a bit more about each of these releases, but until then... check out the lists below for all the new releases, restocks, and used recent arrivals.
By the way, we depend heavily on walk-in trades for a significant portion of our used stock. We're always buying and trading for quality used CDs, LPs, 7"s, and DVDs and we're more than willing to pay for good stuff. We're especially interested in all formats in the following genres, punk, psych, experimental, indie, and classic rock, metal, classic soul & funk, classic hip-hop, free jazz, classic reggae & dub, and international. We offer the best cash and trade quotes in the city and we'll buy any size collection, if it's what we're looking for. If your collection is too big to bring in, please drop us a line and we'll schedule and appointment to come by and take a look. We think you'll be more than happy with our offer.
That'll do it for this week's update. What a whopper! As usual, thanks for reading and we hope to see you all soon!

Hello again, Friends,
We hope you all had a great Halloween. We sure did! But that's old news now, on to new news. The bit we're most excited about is our BRAND NEW WEB STORE. Yeah, that's right! We're finally live and ready to accept orders online. Previously, one could only peruse the new items we featured in our updates, but now the majority of our physical inventory, both new and used, is listed for sale at PermanentRecordsChicago.com as we speak. The site's not quite finished yet, there's some tweaking to be done, some pictures and descriptions to be added, and etcetera, but it's fully functional and ready for you to use it. And like Bill Withers sang, if it feels this good getting used, you just keep on using me until you use me up. We're super stoked to have it all working and we hope you're half as excited as we are to shop at Permanent Records from anywhere in the world. Please feel free to send us any comments or suggestions you might have about the web store as it's a work in progress and we appreciate any constructive criticism you might have for us. In addition to this great news, we also have a bunch of new releases we'd like to discuss this week, so let's get on with it.
The recommended new releases this week include a reissue of one of our all-time favorite Krautrock albums, a new Mississippi records box set, the vinyl version of the latest Sunn O))) record, an exact repro of a insanely rare private press biker-psych LP, new TeePee LP, a new White Mystery / Black Apple split 7", a new bedroom pop cassette release, a bunch of key restocks, and so much more. Please read on for all the deets...
Faust IV has been notoriously difficult record to find on vinyl. A couple of us have personally been searching for a reasonably priced copy of the original for years, to no avail. It's one of those records that get held on to once their acquired, and for good reason. It's one of the best records of all time. No joke. If you like Can, Neu!, or Krautrock in general, you must own this record. In our humble opinion, it's a must own for fans of all types of music. It's a perfect record. It's like the German Sgt. Pepper's. Enough of our opinions, though, here are a couple hard facts. Faust IV was originally released in 1974. Faust coined the term Krautrock with the title of the epic jam that is first track on the album. It's an experimental album, with a strangely accessible, catchy vibe, especially on tracks like Jennifer and Giggy Smile. It's finally been reissued on vinyl by Capitol for your enjoyment. Don't let this one slip through the cracks, it may not be so easy to find the next time you go looking for it. Faust IV gets a perfect 10 (Pitchfork gave it a meager 9.4) in our book and it comes with the highest recommendation we can offer. You'll find it neatly filed near the top of our Best Reissues of '09 list, for sure.
Mississippi Records has been keeping very busy lately. Over the course of the last few weeks, we've mentioned new Mississippi releases a few times. We still have stock on some of them, while others are long gone. Anyhow, we have a new Mississippi release to discuss this week. This time we're dealing with a double LP compilation box set of Greek urban folk music, or Rebetiko. The title of the compilation is Mortika: Recordings From a Greek Underworld and it's a killer. As we learned from the enclosed booklet (which is super nice and extensive), Mortika simply means songs about [people] who [are] both tough and elegant. The songs contained within are like a Greek folk-blues, if you will. Some are drone-y and raga-esque while others are very melodic upbeat eastern-european ditties. All are consistently good, as you might have come to expect from a Mississippi release by now. Many folks have been picking up the Mississippi releases sight unseen, which is not too big of a gamble actually, and we'd recommend doing the same. But you don't have to buy sight unseen because we're telling you here and now that this is good stuff and it's worth owning. We think it's safe to say that Mississippi is the closest thing our generation has to a Folkways, without all the educational children's sing-a-long records, and what better compliment can you give than that? Therefore, Mortika comes highly recommended, of course. The most recent international 78s comps on Mississippi, Mata La Pena and String of Pearls are back in stock as well and also come recommended.
Sunn O))) is a polarizing band. They have a big enough fan base to sell out sizable venues, meanwhile their records are far too esoteric to be embraced by a mainstream audience, at least in our lifetime. Most of our reader's are probably already familiar with Sunn O))), but for the sake of those not already familiar, but intrigued, we recommend clicking here for the 411 (ie. Sunn O))) is pronounced sun, the O))) is silent). Sunn O))) records are not for everyone. We recognize this. We're not going to recommend their records to everyone. Most music lovers, even the most avid, will have a hard time embracing Sunn O)))'s low-end heavy drone metal, and it's totally fine. To each his or her own. Most of us are not musical masochists, but some of us are. Those of us who enjoy the punishing sounds of Sunn O))) will be stoked to hear that Monoliths and Dimensions, Sunn O)))'s latest full-length on Southern Lord, is finally available on wax. As usual, it's beautifully packaged and heavy as hell. We're talking heavyweight gatefold action with a translucent printed-on fold over sleeve dust jacket and color printed inner sleeves; it's seriously magnificent. Sunn O))) fans have most likely heard this recording already, since it's been available on CD for over 5 months now, but we can assure the rest of you that you'll either love it or hate it, depending on whether or not you like what Sunn O))) is best known for, doom-y drone metal. For those of you who remain undecided, give Monoliths and Dimensions a shot and see for yourself, it's a pretty good representation of Sunn O)))'s sound.
The rare private press reissue we're talking about is the self-titled Circuit Rider LP from 1980. This rarity is well-known among hardcore record collectors, but is virtually unknown beyond those circles. It's one of the rarities included in the Acid Archives book and website (which got taken down last month apparently) and it's even listed among the Top Ten LPs Most Likely to Be Owned by a Serial Killer at the end of the book. As far as the sounds contained within are concerned, we're dealing with a deeply disturbed biker on a loner psych journey to whoknowswhere. At times Circuit Rider reminds us of early Captain Beefheart. Other tracks are more mellow Doors-esque come downs, but it's all bluesy, outsider rock. It was originally released in a very small edition in 1980, rumored to have been recorded in 1971, but not released until 9 years later. Who knows what the real deal is? Obviously, Circiut Rider is unique, timeless listen, shrouded in mystery. Thanks to this exact repro reissue it can now been obtained for less than a 3 figure price tag and appreciated by a new generation of record appreciators, at least until the 800 copy pressing runs out.
TeePee is the moniker of the solo work by Eric of the Electric Bunnies, who we will no doubt be discussing further in the near future because of their imminent LP release on Florida's Dying. Anyhow, TeePee has laid a couple great 7"s and a few killer tapes on us over the course of the last year or so and now we're excited to announce the release of TeePee's debut LP Morals. It's filled with all kinds of bedroom recorded pop jams that will get stuck in your head till you wanna rip that earworm out by it's ass. Seriously catchy guitar/synth pop jams with some more experimental, swirly psychedelic jams thrown in to keep things diversified. Highly recommended for fans of Blank Dogs, Gary War, Black Math, or any weirdo synth-pop jams. FYI, Morals was released in an addition of 500 with and insert and a Pog. Yep, each one includes a Pog!?! Fans of similar stuff will probably also be stoked on the new Lake Breeze tape we just got in. It rules.
On the second Sunday of every month, we spin records at the Whistler in Logan Square. Our next DJ night is next Sunday, November 8th by the way. We would love to see you all there, but we digress. Whistler has had a successful year. They've blended a mixologist mentality with working class vibe in a classy environment. You can go in there, feel very comfortable, order a high-end cocktail, or a can of beer for a couple bucks. It's all-encompassing. They have live music, DJs, and a sweet patio out back as well. Anyhow, in addition to doing all of this, they folks at Whister have started their own label and it looks like their on catalog number 004. The latest is a split 7" between White Mystery and Black Apple. We know White Mystery well. That's Miss Alex White's (of In the Red infamy) newest band with her brother Frances. The do stripped down garage rock right and Take a Walk is a great example of it. However, this is our first introduction to Black Apple and we're happy to know ‘em. The Black Apple side is a nice angular, art punk track called Fire Baby. Both tracks were recorded live at, ironically, other local venues. The split 7"s were pressed in a limited, hand-numbered edition of 500 on purple swirled vinyl. At $3, how could you pass on this grass? Whatever happened to the $3 7" anyhow? It seems just as elusive as the $1 gallon of gas these days.
We've done a lot of restocking this week as well, the full lists can be perused below, but we're especially excited to have both GR (of the Gunslingers) solo LPs, the Peoples Temple 7", and the first two volumes of Boris' Heavy Rock Hits 7"s back in stock.
We've also restocked the used CD, LP, and 7" bins with some sweet recently acquired records. Come on down and check those items for yourself. Non-local customers can now, for the first time ever, purchase used items from our web store! Unfortunately, for now, international customers will have to send us an order request so we can get them a shipping quote before payment can be posted.
Also of note, we have some FREE TICKETS to give away for the Peter, Bjorn, and John show at the Metro on Thursday, November 12th. Drop us a line if you're interested. First come, first serve.
If you have any questions, comments, or criticisms, please drop us a line anytime.

Greetings Pals,
We're still reeling from last week's batch of new releases. How you doin'?
We know you're fine, but how you doin'? Yeah, that's right. Anyhow, unfortunately the Bruiser in-store was cancelled due to a schedule change, but we were able to score some tapes for those of you who might be interested in hearing what Pat and Tyler from Warhammer 48k (Perm-001) have been up to lately. They've been rocking on the lo-fi, bass-heavy, repetitive experimental rock jams influenced heavily by Unwound and other underground '90s genre-defying noisy rock staples such as Steel Pole Bath Tub and the like. Recommended listening, for sure. As far as in-stores go, we're preparing to chill out for the winter-time, but we do have two key events between now and the Axemen in-store at the end of November we'd like to share with you. First, we're Getting Drunk To Spin Records To Get Drunk To over at the Whistler on Sunday, November 8th and we hope you will all join us for that. Then, on Saturday, November 21st, we're celebrating our 3rd Anniversary with a big ol' bash over at the Hideout. More details to follow, but we can tell you that the Cave, Cacaw, Black Math, and Mako Sica will all be performing and it'll be off the chain. Goodies will be given away, other fun stuff will take place, and the proverbial wine will flow like water, if you know what we're saying. Even if you don't (we're not sure we even know what we're talking about half the time) you should come on out and party with us for both events. Our Anniversary Party will likely sell out, as last year's did, so plan accordingly. The Whistler DJ gig is FREE and the Anniversary Party is only $5. Advance tickets for the Hideout jam can be purchased here. By the way, in lieu of the Halloween holiday next Saturday, we'll be closing early at 5pm. Sorry, but our blood sugar is low and we gotta get our Trick or Treat on. We'll be double dipping into Chicagoland candy jars by going out Friday as well. Cacaw, Ga'an, and Gatekeeper are playing a special Halloween party gig at Automatic and you can bet we'll be there with bells (or corpse paint) on. Hope to see you there! (and at the Whistler and at the Hideout). Awesome, stuff to do!
This week brings us a boatload of new jams, especially heavy on the punk side. Some of the items we're most excited about are the brand new Chicago punk documentary/soundtrack combo LP+DVD, a couple of new S-S records releases, the second pressing of the Cheveu Cheveau LP, three new limited edition Mexican Summer vinyl-only releases, a couple of new 7"s by the most prolific SF garage group ever, a new 12" EP by Woven Bones, and a new limited edition kraut-y psych LP by Matta Llama. Read on for all the juicy details...
Saturday night, a couple of us bailed out on work and went to the showing of the Chicago Punk Documentary You Weren't There: A History of Chicago Punk 1977-84. We were blown away. The film is cram packed with loads of late-70's and early-80's live footage from lots of obscure and some more well known Chicago punk bands. Featured in the film are bands like Mentally Ill, Tutu & the Pirates, Strike Under, Way-Outs, Da, Subverts, End Result, Naked Raygun, Articles of Faith, Effigies, Big Black, and many more. The filmmaker interviewed a bunch of the OG Chicago punkers and got some great anecdotes from seminal musicians like Jeff Pezzati, Santiago Durango, and Steve Albini and less celebrated, but no less important folks like Terry Nelson. Anyhow, the interviews, live footage, still photos, and music are arranged beautifully. The 2+ hours fly by and leave one wanting more. The showing Saturday night was in celebration of the film's DVD release. Arriving sometime in the next few days, will be the DVD and a special limited edition soundtrack LP+DVD combo pack. We're super stoked to be offering these items up for sale and we think you'll be equally stoked to add them to your collection. This is the real History of Chicago Punk, a tragically neglected story, that's just as important as anything that went on in L.A., New York, or in the UK. Don't miss out on it again.
One of our favorite labels going these days is Sacremento's S-S Records. They've introduced us to some great stuff over the past few years, including Nothing People, who we're doing a 7" release with before the year's out (more details to come on that release in the near future). Now's the time to rave about the latest batch of releases on S-S. The first is Low Red Center's fantastic 10" vinyl debut. Low Red Center is a minimal synthprovisation troupe from Austin, Tejas. The 10" is full of sweet minimal synth jams that sound heavily influenced by D.A.F., Kraftwerk, Devo, and Crash Course in Science. We've been rocking the hell out of this one and we think you will want to too! The second S-S release we're discussing this week is the domestic release of El-G's Tout Ploie LP formerly only available as an import on the Belgian label Kraak. El-G is a Belgian experimental bedroom psych-folk group. As the hype sticker states, they're influences range from Serge Gainsbourg to Comus to Thierry Muller. As you might imagine, Tout Ploie incorporates a '60s French Pop vocal style into some bleek, sparse song arrangements very effectively. This record is eerily appealing and we've never really heard anything quite like it. These days, that goes a long way with us. Both new S-S releases (and most of the S-S back catalog) come with our highest recommendation.
FYI, S-S also issued the astounding debut LP by Cheveu. Although, that title is sadly no longer available domestically, Cheveu's equally astounding second LP (which we released about a month ago) has been repressed and is available once again on lovely black vinyl (digital download code included). Also still available on the Permanent imprint, but going fast, is the limited edition, recently reviewed LP (digital download also included) from Chicago's Mako Sica. Only 120 copies to go around and there's only about a third of them left. Don't say we didn't tell you so.
Some other key restocks this week include both of the rare American punk singles LP comps No One Left to Blame and Staring Down the Barrel The first batch of these went fast and for good reason. The tracks compiled on each are solid, rarer-than-rare, KBD-style DIY punk jams and the LPs are priced to move at $8 a pop. You can't beat a deal like that with a shtick. Speaking of KBD, we also procured a handful of the Killed By Death #9 All American Punk LP comps. Dig 'em.
We're deep into fall but Mexican Summer is in full swing. This fairly new label has gotten off to a great start. So far the label has released records by Wooden Shjips, Kurt Vile, Black Moth Super Rainbow, Dungen, Ariel Pink, and more. This week brings us 3 more new Mexican Summer releases from Young Prisms, Bipolar Bear, and John Carpenter, all California-based artists coincidentally. Young Prisms are yet another sweet San Francisco group and their eponymous debut 12" EP has got us very excited for what's to come from this band. They do a really nice job of filling the gap between longer, more experimental, jams of Magic Lantern and Wooden Shjips and the lo-fi, melodic garage rock of bands like Fresh & Onlys and Thee Oh Sees. Bipolar Bear is a part of the LA Smell scene that brought us No Age, Abe Vigoda, and Mika Miko, among other things. Their record is darker and less poppy than most of the releases by the aforementioned artists, but it's not terribly dissimilar. Harlem Pripyat is full of pop jams disguised by a wall of echo and distortion. Amazing cover photo, too! Also, hailing from LA is John Carpenter. His new Mexican Summer release is his debut 7" and it's got a great '60s throwback haunted garage pop vibe, especially on the A-side. As is the case with most Mexican Summer releases, these are all hand-numbered, limited editions of 500 copies (download code included). Great stuff, indeed.
Speaking of San Francisco, guess who has a couple new records out? Nope, not Ty Segall. Nope, not the Fresh & Onlys. It's you're favorite uber-prolific garage psych-sters... Thee Oh Sees! Yep, two more records! Who's keeping count? This time we have a split 7" between Thee Oh Sees and Chicago's own Paul Cary (formerly of In The Red recording artist the Horrors. The Oh Sees songs are both covers on this one, by Iran and Trio respectively, and Paul Cary's jams are originals. The Oh Sees covers are solid and Oh Sees fans will be stoked on the first cut on Paul Cary's side, for sure. Stankhouse Records is the label responsible for this one and according to their site, this release is already SOLD OUT. Oh Sees also have a new record on the Austrian label Rock Is Hell. Still waiting to hear back from the label as to whether or not we'll be able to get more of this new Oh Sees import 7". We got a bunch of these last week and sold through them before update time. We'll keep you updated on the availability of this record as we get more information.
Another band that's laid quite a few records on us this year is Austin's feedback/distortion worshiping punk outfit, Woven Bones. All of the 7"s they've released this year have been great and now they're moving on up to bigger and better things. The Minus Touch is their first 12" EP and it's killer. Still shorter than we'd like, but word on the street is that a LP is on it's way. Woven Bones did one of the best in-stores we've hosted all year! They totally laid down a gnarly layer of feedback over the top like the first few tracks on the Jesus and Mary Chain Peel Sessions record (which we obviously adore). Fans of Jesus and Mary Chain, Stooges, and Spacemen 3 owe it to themselves to pick this up and see them live the next time they come through town.
Also new this week is the beautifully packaged Matta Llama LP, The Witch Channel. One look at the jacket and you can guess what you're in for. Dark, experimental psych jams for days. Most of it sounds improvised and it'd make a nice soundtrack to a space-y winter evening at home. Fans of the psychedelic drone of Expo 70 and the more minimalist, meandering krautrock of the early Agitation Free records will definitely want to get in on this quickly as there are only 500 copies to go around.
Fans of sweet used records will be happy to hear that we've spent some time refreshing the recent arrivals LP bins with loads of sweet used records. The CD bin has also been refreshed as usual. We also did some serious markdowns on the new and used 7" bins. Come on in and check out the goods for yourself.
The early bird gets the earworm.

Good Day Friends,
Man, do we have a lot to share with you this week. We're currently in the middle of a serious new release season and bands/labels are making it rain this year, hard. So many quality tunes. We'll get to those releases shortly, but first we want to thank Hollows for allowing us to host their PlusTapes release show here on Saturday. They totally rocked and their tape is great as well. It's available exclusively from us, by the way and they're selling like hotcakes. Speaking of hotcakes, Brain Idea was awesome as well. Their new eponymous tape release kills as well and comes highly recommended, especially for fans of the Clean and/or Tyvek. DIY Punk at it's finest. While you're at it, check out the NOi! tape (krautrockin' covers of classic Oi! punk cuts) featuring two members of Brain Idea. That's a brain idea we wish we'd thought of, pure genius. Next week, our in-store is with Bruiser (featuring Pat Kopine, ex-member of Warhammer 48k) which we couldn't be more stoked about. We loved Warhammer so much that we decided to start a label to put out their second record. Pat's real fond of stuff like Unwound and Steel Pole Bath Tub and we're sure Bruiser will be nothing short of intense. It'd be really cool if fans of Warhammer, or any of the aforementioned bands would blindly come out to show your support. Thanks to those of you who came out this past weekend. Good times were had by all. As for the web store, we're still working on it. There were some weird glitches and things that forced us to delay the launch. When it's up, you'll be the first to hear about it. Now on to the goods...
Among many, many other sweet items, we're super into the new Mississippi Records releases, the Raincoats debut reissue LP, a couple new Fashionable Idiots releases, another new Oh Sees LP, two new Boris 7"s. Seriously, we received more new releases this week than we've had time to really digest, so check the full list below. We'll get around to telling you about the ones we recommend sooner than later.
If it seems like we discuss Mississippi Records more than most stuff, it's because we do. They give us a lot of reasons to: they lay quality new reissues on us regularly, they do a really nice job with the packaging, and they make them affordable. Who could ask for anything more? Just as a refresher, Mississippi was recently responsible for the the Clean compilation LP, the Rats reissues, the Abner Jay, Cecil Barfield, and George Coleman reissues as well as a slew of compilations of rare international 78s, early blues, and gospel jams. In short, if it's on Mississippi, it's worth checking out, if not buying blindly. That's why we get so excited when a box arrives with the Mississippi Records Portland return address in the upper left hand corner. Yet again, Mississippi does not disappoint. This week we received their latest batch of reissues by De Kift, Joseph Spence, and Michael Hurley.
De Kift is a Dutch band with ties to The Ex that formed in 1988. It was then that they released they're debut eponymous 7" and they followed up with their debut LP shortly thereafter, in 1989. Both of these original releases are rarer than a four-eyed albino ostrich, but now, thanks to Mississippi they're readily available again for your listening pleasure. Both of these records are filled to the gills with angular Dutch post-punk in the same vein as the Ex records from the same period. Amazing stuff. De Kift went on to record many records over the course of the next 20 years, including the recently reissued Krankenhaus, but these first two records stand as definitive Dutch punk classics. Krankenhaus is good in it's own right, but it's much less confrontational and would probably appeal more to fans of the more baroque, junk-band, accordion-laden, eastern-european influenced side of rock. Joseph Spence was a Bahaman singer and folk-blues guitarist born in 1910. At 61, Spence recorded Bahaman Guitarist: Good Morning Mr. Walker for the Arhoolie label. It's a great outsider folk-blues record with some gnarly vocals that almost sound Cajun in their incomprehensibility. It's packaged beautifully in a hand screen printed, Folkways-style paste-on over textured red pleather jacket. Fans of those George Coleman, Abner Jay, and Cecil Barfield will definitely want to take this one seriously. The material on Parsnip Snips by Michael Hurley consists of unreleased material from sessions between 1964 and 1972. The tracks were originally released in this form in 1997 in Germany but were seized (why?) by the German government and only 150 copies have been known to exist, until now. Fans of outsider singer-songwriter folk will dig this for sure. All of these releases, as with all Mississippi releases, come with the Permanent stamp of approval.
The Raincoats were a seminal post-punk group. They happened to be all female, but that has nothing to do with the staying power of their records, especially their eponymous debut. If you haven't heard this record, it's probably not your fault, the record companies haven't made it easy to get a hold of. Aside from the original LP and the CD reissues in the early '90s (thanks to Kurt Cobain's insistence) the Raincoats records have sadly been out-of-print, until now. Thanks to the fine folks over at Kill Rock Stars, you can now own a copy of the Raincoats LP (conveniently packaged with a free digital download code) for a mere $15. This is one of those records we've been waiting for a reissue of for years now. If you dig the Slits, post-punk, or off-kilter bedroom pop, this is a must own. It actually features Palmolive from the Slits on drums and the production assistance of Red Krayola's Mayo Thompson. Classic stuff, man. Highly recommended.
Fashionable Idiots has laid a bunch of sweet new records on us lately. We were introduced to the Mineapolis micro-label by the Drunkdriver Fire Sale 7", which is probably one of our favorite singles of the year (and Drunkdriver's best release so far). Brutal repetitive noise rock, just punishing. And our interest in Idiots releases just grew from there. The Condominiums 7" is an intense stoner rock slab and the Fresh Meat single that just rolled in sounds a lot like the Francis Harold & the Holograms records we raved about earlier in the year, but with less reverb on the vocals. The Herds LP is full of brutal hardcore jams and that pretty much rounds out the labels discography. Every noise rock fan should own the Drunkdriver single. The Fresh Meat and Condominiums singles should come next, followed closely by the Herds LP. Seriously, this stuff kills and it's all pretty limited. Can't wait to hear what's next from Fashionable Idiots (great label name by the way).
Of all the bands we've discussed this year, Thee Oh Sees have got to be the most often referenced. They've released more records this year than any other band we can think of. The Help LP will probably come close to topping our Best of '09 list, but the other records they've laid on us ain't exactly chopped liver. The Hounds of Foggy Notion LP is great, as is the Sucks Blood reissue. Their split single with Ty Segall is pretty awesome as well. Anyhow, they're back, or at least he (John Dwyer) is, with another full-length of previously unreleased material. The new LP on Blank Dogs dude's Captured Tracks label entitled Dog Poison is basically a solo John Dwyer record, but since he's been recording solo and otherwise under the Oh Sees/Ohsees/OCS moniker(s) for over a decade now, there's no reason why it shouldn't have been released as such. Don't read too much into the solo record thing though, as this is not an acoustic guitar only, bedroom recorded affair. John plays all the instruments on this one, and aside from lacking backing vocals, this thing is a full-on Oh Sees-type affair. John sings a little less falsetto and there aren't any Help-style psychedelic rave-ups, but it's a great record nonetheless. Fans of Thee Oh Sees will want to (even though they may not want to buy yet another Oh Sees record) splurge for this one. When will the prolificacy bring them down? All we know is that it hasn't happened yet.
Boris is one of the best heavy bands of our generation. Their one of the best because when they're at their heaviest (see 2006's Pink) their one of the heaviest, but they're no one-trick pony. Boris can drone on just as well as Sunn O))) ( Altar is an incredible collab record) and they know how to get the party started as well (see the 9dw split). The record they did with Michio Kurihara, Rainbow, is amazingly beautiful as well. Anyhow, Boris' latest releases are coming in the form of a series of 3 Heavy Rock Hits limited edition 7"s on Southern Lord. Volumes 1 and 2 have arrived! Volume 1 hits hard, but in a more '90s alt-rock, shoegaze-y kinda way. Can we get Boris and Sonic Youth on a bill together please? Volume 2 contains H.M.A. (Heavy Metal Addict) which is heavy as fuck while the B-side Black Original is more of the dancy pop stuff. Both are good in their own right, but not necessarily what we'd call their heaviest material. We'd recommend them, but we probably don't need to. Boris fans are gonna get these anyways and non-Boris fans should skip 'em and try a copy of Pink or their latest Smile on for size instead. These 7's are limited and going way too fast, though.
We've also done a significant amount of restocking lately the No Age and Pissed Jeans records on Sub Pop are back in stock as is Tim Cohen's (of Fresh & Onlys) solo LP. We also scored a bunch of new LP compilations that look pretty great as well. Check out the full lists below for all the newly released and restocked goodies. We also loaded the LP, CD, and 7" recent arrivals bins with quality used stuff and we added about 500% more stuff to the 99 cent 7" section. Come on in and check out the sitch for yourself real soon.

Helllo Everyone,
It's update time again and a lot has happened since we last spoke. We hosted a bitchin' in-store with Yussuf Jerusalem and Judith Swan on Wednesday and we've seen loads of records and CDs, new and used, come and go over the course of the last 7 days. We've also been working hard at getting the web store together and we hope to see it launch officially next week sometime. Keep your fingers crossed for us. It's gonna be a wild ride.
As we mentioned last week, we've been ripping through some used vinyl and CDs lately. Come in quickly and often so you don't miss anything. Many records have been filed into the general population due to a lack of space in the recent arrivals section, so take your time and be thorough next time you're in to be sure you don't miss any treasures.
The records we've been rockin' the most this week include, but are not limited to two new Sacred Bones releases, a brand new White Hills EP, a fresh batch of Hozac releases, a new Plus Tapes release available exclusively from us, and a couple of excellent punk rarities comps. Read on for all the deets...
Moon Duo is Ripley from the mighty Wooden Shjips psychedelic pside-project. He thrives on repetition just as much solo as he does with a full band, but Moon Duo is slightly more minimal and there's drum-machine percussion instead of live drums. The new Killing Time EP on Sacred Bones is the jam and it's sure to satisfy the tastes of Wooden Shjips fans and those who dug the more minimal sounds of the Love on the Sea 12". It's an eclectic mix of songs, some instrumental, some with lyrics, and there's even a track that seems Suicide influenced. The other new Sacred Bones release is a brand new full-length from Factums, titled Flowers. Apparently, the jams were recorded in 2006-2007, but they've gone unreleased until now. 2007 was a great year for Factums as they released both the Spells and Charms CD and the incredible Alien Native LP on Siltbreeze. Flowers fits right in with the aesthetic of those records. It's Factums' second Sacred Bones LP and it's full of all types of weird sounds, but they're presented in song form. We've probably already mentioned how much we dig locked grooves before and those of you who agree with that sentiment will enjoy the fact that both sides of Flowers end in locked grooves. They're both solid repeats too, so you can just let each side ride until your neighbors come knocking. The Factums record sports the standard Sacred Bones-style screen printed jacket while the Moon Duo breaks the mold and is presented in a printed glossy jacket with four interstellar scenes on front. Obviously, we're stoked on these releases and we're even more stoked to recommend them to you. Copies of the previous Moon Duo and Factums releases are also available for anyone who may have missed them.
White Hills is really bringing it on wax in '09. The vinyl release of Heads on Fire gets more than it's fair share of spins around here and their side of the Heads split on Rocket Recordings rips as well (as does the Heads side for that matter). Anyhow, the Hills are back and they must have third eyes (they're also alive with the sound of music). The new Dead EP is 3 new tracks and a remix, all of which will blow your mind. White Hills are from Brooklyn and the title track was recorded in Oneida's studio and features the big O's Kid Millions on drums. We'd love to see these bands on a bill together. Both songs on the B-side are exclusive to this release and the second song on the flip, Red Sun might be the best song on there. Dead will be included on their 2010 Thrill Jockey full-length. It's gonna be a long, cold winter without any more White Hills records and this one's limited to 1000 copies worldwide so act fast. Fans of Oneida's latest Rated O or any modern psychedelic space rock would be doing themselves a favor by dropping the dough on this one. The limited edition Heads Tilburg import 2xLP is also here and ready to be devoured. Review pending...but you know that shit's good.
HoZac, HoZac, HoZac. Chicago is lucky to have 'em and unfortunately, mainstream Chicago probably doesn't even know they exist. Well, we do, and we're stoked that they're local. People might take more notice when they start to see more and more bands that got their start on HoZac (like Dum Dum Girls) signing bigger and bigger labels (like Sub Pop). If you're not already paying attention, now's a perfect time to start. Previously HoZac released 7"s exclusively, but they laid the fantastic Smith Westerns LP on us a few months back and now they're back with their second full-length LP by Wizzard Sleeve. Wizzard Sleeve is a two-piece band from southern Alabama that played a killer in-store here at Permanent earlier this year. Their sound can be neatly summed up by what's inscribed in the A-side fade-out groove of their new self-titled long-player: Crime, Chrome, and Creedence. In fact, the opening track is a riff-off of Crime's classic San Francisco's Doomed that they've re-tooled into Alabama's Doomed. For two guys, they get a lot of sound from guitar, synth, and drums. They even cover a Pagans tune When I Die and the sweet full-color collage artwork is courtesy of local Daily Void-er Chris Ilth. We're diggin' this LP and think after hearing it, you will too. Although they've ventured into larger formats as of late, HoZac's still steadily pumping out the singles. This week brings us new singles from Sharp Ends, The Girls at Dawn, and Chicago's own Plastic Crimewave Sound. All of which are great. We've especially been enjoying the dark, reverb-y throwback girl-group sounds of The Girls at Dawn Single and the psychedelic punk of Plastic Crimewave's Shockwave Rider. By the way, the PCWS single is backed by a cover of Dead C's Bad Politics, baby. The Sharp Ends single has a cool Joy Division meets Sonic Youth vibe to it and it's definitely growing on us. Might as well go in for it 2all, you won't be disappointed.
Local cassette tape purveyors, PlusTapes, have a new tape out this week as well. It's a brand new full-length from a new Chicago group, the tight black pants/cut-off jean-jacket wearin' Hollows. Hollows are a female-fronted bass, synth, and drums trio heavily influenced by '60s girl-group pop, sax and all. This stuff plays pretty close to the original, without much punk snottiness. There's quick'n'sweet multi-layered pop songs, post-punk in their urgency, and a drone-y pop tune or two thrown in for well-roundedness. Fans of Vivian Girls, Shangri-las, and power pop should definitely take note. This tape is exclusively available thru PlusTapes via mailorder and right here at Permanent Records! You can't get this anywhere else and there's only 100 copies, so don't snooze on this one or it'll be gone. By the way, Hollows will be performing here at Permanent on Saturday, October 17th to celebrate the release of their Plus Tapes release. Come one, come all! It's gonna be a smash! We might even preemptively do the Monster Mash.
In addition to all this new stuff, we procured some sweet obscure punk comps that have been around for a while, but not this readily, and definitely, not this cheap. The comps we're speaking of are the Staring Down the Barrel and No One's Left to Blame records. Both of these LPs are packed to the gills with rare unknown American Punk cuts from the late-70's and early-80's. In addition to finding the more recently reissued J.T. IV's Death Trip, Fems' Go to a Party, and Death's Keep on Knockin, you can also hear rarer than rare killer KBD punk jams by Brats, DV8, Victims, Ducky Boys, and Secret Savior within the grooves of these comps. The chances of coming across any of the hyper-elusive originals is virtually zilch and even if you do find any of the original singles, they're probably gonna dent your wallet deeper than the price of both of these comps combined. Eight bucks a pop is a steal on these, for real, take advantage of the situation while you can and impress your pals with your extensive knowledge of private press punk singles from now on. Careful though, you might just get Hooked on Junk.
Also new and exciting this week are Hunx and his Punx's Gay Singles LP, Dark Fog's DFIII...Thousands LP, loads of Expo 70 Tapes and CDRs, and more. Peep the lists below for full deets. In Permanent label news, we received the test pressings for our upcoming Purling Hiss LP release and they sound great. We hope to have the finished product within a month! Nothing People singles are next!

Hello Ev-er-y- bod-y,
There is so much to discuss this week, we're not going to waste time with small talk here in the opening paragraph. First things first, we'd like to graciously thank Expo 70 and Prince Rama of Ayodhya for wrinkling our brains on Saturday at the in-store. And many thanks, of course, to those of you who trudged through the rain to come out and show your support. We have a bunch of releases from both of these bands in stock now on all three formats, vinyl, tape, and CD that you can check out the next time you're in. We'd definitely recommend doing so. Anyhow, we're hosting an unusual Wednesday night in-store this week, with Yussuf Jerusalem (France) and Judith Swan. Those of you who picked up the Yussuf LP on Florida's Dying are probably already planning on coming out, but we'd highly recommend coming out even if you're not already familiar with Yussuf. Their debut LP spans multiple genres, including a black metal jam, and it totally rips. We don't do mid-week in-stores for just anyone and we're not sure when Yussuf will be back stateside, so take advantage of this rare opportunity. You won't be sorry you did. Full details on all of our upcoming in-store events can be found in the list below. Now on to the goods...
We're overwhelmed with new releases this week, but we'll try to discuss as many as we can before we pass out from listening fatigue. This week brings us THE ENTIRE TOUCH & GO JESUS LIZARD CATALOG REISSUED, two sweet Feelies reissues on wax, a couple new LPs and a boat load of tapes on the Night People label, two new Sweet Rot 7"s, a new UV Race LP, new full-lengths from Kurt Vile and Dutchess and the Duke, and a brand new Permanent Records T-Shirt! Read on, we double-dog-dare you.
We're located in Chicago. That being said, there's probably not much we can say about the Jesus Lizard that hasn't already been said about these local favorites. They are hands down one of the best bands of our generation. David Yow is the closest thing to an Iggy Pop-style front man we can think from recent years. All of the members are masters of their instruments and they created a sound entirely of their own. From the drum-machine laden Head LP, right down to the melodic, yet totally abrasive sound of the fully-realized Down, the Jesus Lizard kicks ass. Unfortunately, most of the Touch & Go material has been out-of-print, in some cases on CD and Vinyl, for far too long. That's no longer the case, y'all. All five Touch & Go long-players, Head, Pure, Goat, Liar, and Down have been remastered and are back in print on both formats with bonus tracks and digital downloads on the LPs. If your J. Liz collection is not already complete, now's the time to fill in the gaps. If you don't own any of these records, now's the time to get them all (or at least one to find out what you've been missing out on all these years). We're stoked to have all these records back in stock and we're even more stoked to see them at the Metro in November! Each and every one of these records comes with the Permanent Records official stamp of approval. Classic, timeless, abrasive rock'n'roll, indeed.
The Feelies debut LP from 1980 Crazy Rhythms is a classic post-punk record. It's aptly titled and is laden with great poly-rhythms and heavy on the repetition. The multi-part vocal harmonies are sweet and the lead guitar rips as well. The Good Earth is the second Feelies LP, not originally released until 1986. It lacks some of the punk energy that Crazy Rhythms has, but it still retains the general Feelies vibe and it's a classic in it's own right. The Feelies sound is unique, but at times, they sound a bit like a heavily Velvets-influenced cross between the first Modern Lovers and Violent Femmes records. Both reissues are definitely recommended for fans of those bands, for sure. Digital Downloads with bonus tracks are included with both records.
We've mentioned Night People in these updates before. It's the Iowa City-based label run by former Racoo-oo-oon dude, Shawn Reed. Shawn's one of the key members of Wet Hair now and he's releasing some other kick ass records and tapes on his label now as well. The Peaking Lights LP was a killer recent Night People release (and it's back in stock) as was the FNU Ronnies one-sided, clear vinyl 12". The latest Tyvek 12" has a similar aesthetic, but the sounds in the grooves are quite different. Tyvek is a Detroit-based minimalist garage punk band, heavily influenced by the Fall and possibly Swell Maps. The other two new vinyl releases on Night People are the Yves/Son/Ace LP and the Kites/ Earth Crown split LP. Yves/Son/Ace is apparently a Factums/ Love Tan side-project and it's a bit more on the experimental side. Fans of Factums will definitely want to give this one a spin. The Tyvek and Yves records are both on clear vinyl, the Tyvek jam is one-sided destroyer with an awesomely screen-printed b-side. The new Night People cassette tape releases include killer new jams by TeePee, Taterbug, Ryan Garbes, California Sun, Polyps, Dirty Beaches, Twerps, and Smycken. Fans of cassette tapes will be stoked to hear that we've also received the latest Dino Felipe and PC Worship tapes on Senzei and Shdwply respectively. Both are super cool, limited, and come highly recommended for fans of minimal synth and bedroom pop.
Sweet Rot is another label we've touted previously. We like Sweet Rot because we trust their curatorial judgment. They introduced the world to Anals on wax for pete's sake. They've also done some sick records by A.H. Kraken, Love Tan, and as of now Sex Church and the Dictophone. Both of these new singles are housed in the same beautiful textured glue pockets you're used to finding Sweet Rot singles in, and they're both of the same caliber as their previous releases. Weird punk jams abound on these Sweet Rot sevens. Sweet! Rot! Sweet! Rot! Sweet! Rot!
Last week, we mentioned the domestic release of Eddy Current Suppression Ring's eponymous debut LP. They're a big part of the current underground rock scene down under. Other bands from the same scene include Ooga Boogas, Super Wild Horses, Straight Arrows, and UV Race. There's very little by way of vinyl on these other bands, although we do have the Ooga Boogas LP, and recently released singles by Super Wild Horses and UV Race. It's all pretty great shit. UV Race is quickly filling the Australian vinyl void with their brand new debut LP on Aarght! Records. Fans of Eddy Current will definitely want to pick one of these up. It's an upbeat, poppy, synth-y, post-punk affair with cool, apathetic vocals. Good times.
Kurt Vile's been blowing up lately. This Philly dude released Constant Hitmaker on CD more than year ago and nobody seemed to really give a shit. It's a solid record and it didn't make much sense that no one cared about it. Anyhow, people care now. He released a handful of vinyl records on various micro-labels such as Woodsist, Kill Shaman, and Mexican Summer. These records display Vile's (apparently his real name) ability to write in a variety of different genres. The Hunchback EP backed by the Violators presents Vile at his most experimental, while Constant Hitmaker reveals his more Neil Young-y singer-songwriter side. The new full-length Childish Prodigy (on Matador) presents the poppiest side of the Vile discography. On his latest, Vile sounds downright mainstream (not all that dissimilar to a lower-fi Tom Petty or Bruce Springsteen might've sounded like if they were new artists in 2009), and we like it. He even whoop/barks like Springsteen does in homage to Suicide on Nebraska at times throughout Childish Prodigy, an undeniably catchy pop record. Keep it up Vile, you'll go far. And bring back the Violators every once in a while so we know you haven't completely sold out. While we're at it, we'd like to recommend to the Boss that he retreat to his bedroom with a guitar, a harmonica, and a 4-track and do another album similar to Nebraska, cause that shit is the jam and there's way too much lame-ass saxophone on way too many of the E-Street Band records, dude.
Another catchy, yet accessible record we can recommend is the new The Dutchess & the Duke record on Hardly Art. The Dutchess & the Duke are two tenured members of the Seattle garage punk scene doing sweet folk songs. The new album Sunset/Sunrise picks up right where their debut LP left off and it's full of beautifully dark stripped down songs. Sunset/Sunrise was recorded by Greg Ashley (of the Mirrors and Gris Gris) and it sounds great. It's a great record to enjoy a laid back autumn weekend to.
Like we said in the intro, 10/6 is a huge new release date and we haven't had a chance to fully digest everything just yet. We're also super stoked about the following new records: Mission of Burma, Cheater Slicks, Califone, and No Age. We'll get around to waxing poetic about them sooner than later for sure. We've also gotten a slew of incredible restocks recently included a couple Unwound LPs we haven't had in a long while. Fans of the Jesus Lizard, Sonic Youth, and/or Drive Like Jehu should definitely give both the singles comp and The Future of What a shot. They're both great, super-dynamic, noisy '90s rock records and tragically underappreciated, too. Locrian's Rain of Ashes tapes are back as well. We also got a killer local tape from the same dudes who brought us NOi! (Kraurock versions of classic Oi! Punk cuts). The band's called Brain Idea and we've been playing it non-stop here in the shop. Check it out. You can read for yourself the entire list of new releases and restocks below. As always, if there's anything you don't see that you're interested in, drop us a line. We're always down for hearing about new music.
Also, we should mention that we spent a significant amount of time pricing some sweet used records last week and they've been hitting the shelves all weekend and will continue to do so 'til we get 'em all out. Some of these records have been filed directly out with the general population due to a lack of space in the recent arrivals section, so give the stacks a full perusal the next time you're in to make sure you didn't miss a gem you've been searching for.
And last, but certainly not least, we've got a fucking awesome new locally created t-shirt design ready to go. Ryan Duggan, formerly of Black Ladies, currently of Loose Dudes and Hated Skateboards, came up with it and we're super stoked to be presenting the design to you now in two different colors. There's a white t-shirt with black ink and a yellow shirt with red ink available. Peep out the photos below. If you dig it, you can pick one up for a mere $14.99. All of our shirts are high-quality American-made American Apparel tees. Can you even get a blank American Apparel tee for under $15? Nope, we checked.
Much love,

Hey Everybody,
Fall creeped up on us fast here in Chi-town. We're not super stoked about the cooler temps, but we're OK with the fact that it gives us an excuse to spend more time indoors with our record collections. Speaking of record collections, we have plenty of records we recommend adding to yours, but first we'd like to give a big shout-out to Tyvek and Unholy Two for their phenomenal performances here at the shop on Saturday. The Tyvek appearance was very last minute, but they played like they planned on being here from the get-go. Unholy Two may have been the loudest in-store performance we've ever hosted! Like we said, phenomenal, simply phenomenal. We have a few of Unholy Two singles in stock and we restocked the Tyvek LP and Mary Ellen Claims single as well. All of which come highly recommended. The Tyvek LP may find it's onto our best of '09 list after all. Thanks to those of you who came out to show your support as well! Next Saturday, Expo 70 and Prince Rama of Ayodhya will be blissfully blowing our minds around 6pm. Hope to see you there (here)!
In addition to loading the recent arrivals bins with quality used LPs and CDs, we've acquired quite a few hot new jams. Said jams include, but are not limited to, the new Om full-length, the Mantles debut LP, a new Fresh & Onlys LP, a virtual holy trinity of new Not Not Fun releases, a killer new 7" by Drunkdriver, and loads of sweet restocks. Read on for all the deets.
Sleep was a great band. It's always a bummer when great bands split up, but sometimes it's for the best. Sometimes the members of any given band of greatness go on to produce material equal to or greater than the original. We'd argue that Sleep is one of those bands. Sleep's rhythm section became Om and their lead guitarist went on to form High on Fire; two of the best heavy bands going these days. We'll discuss High on Fire in further in another update. For now, we recommend clicking the link and discovering them for yourself if you're not already obsessed. Today we're discussing Om. Their 2005 debut Variations on a Theme is one of the best minimalist stoner metal records we've ever laid ears on. The basic Om formula for that record was to take a simple stoner metal riff and a Sabbath-style chanted vocal melody and pummel them both into submission. Repetition reigns supreme with Om. Side A of Variations is a 21+ minute jam while Side B is divided up into two 11+ minute jams of epically spiritual stoner doom. Anyhow, over the course of the last two full-lengths on Holy Mountain and Southern Lord respectively, Om has taken the same formula and mellowed out slightly. Using the term metal to describe Om seems almost sacrilege these days, while stoner rock doesn't seem right either. Om exists on an existential plane of their own. The new record God is Good is a great example of Om's ever-increasing spirituality. The main differences between God and their last record, Pligrimage are that there's a new drummer, Emil Amos from Grails, who embellishes slightly more than Chris Hakius used to and the fact that there's more than bass, drums, and vocals. Rob Lowe ( Lichens) guests on Tambura and vocals and there's even some flute here and there courtesy of Lorraine Rath. We were slightly worried about the new line-up on this one, but our worries were quelled as soon as we dropped the needle. As with all other Sleep related records, Om's God is Good comes highly recommended.
On a more upbeat note, there's another band rising out of the same San Franciscan scene that brought us Thee Oh Sees, Fresh & Onlys, Ty Segall, Mayyors, and Sic Alps. The Mantles would fit nicely on a bill with Thee Oh Sees or Fresh & Onlys, but their record is slightly less lo-fi and a little more accessible. Their debut LP is on Siltbreeze, but cleaner than anything we've heard on the label recently. The Mantles is a perfect introduction to the band and label, especially if the weirder side of Siltbreeze has kept you at bay. Recommended, especially for fans of the aforementioned bands.
Speaking of the aforementioned bands, there's a brand new Fresh & Onlys full-length on Woodsist out this week as well and it's sah-weet. It's a much darker affair than the eponymous debut, but no less catchy. We know this band (like many of their peers) has released a lot of material this year, but fortunately the quality of the material on this LP doesn't suffer for it. Tim Cohen is obviously a very talented and prolific song-writer and Grey-Eyed Girls proves it. It's already been spun a number of times here in the shop and it probably won't wander far from the turntable here in the near future. Get it while it's hot!
Not Not Fun is a label you can trust. 9 releases out of 10 are outstanding and the 10th release is usually better than average. There consistently releasing records that we can totally get behind. The Pocahaunted and Magic Lantern records immediately come to mind, but their coffers are deep. Unfortunately, many of the Not Not Fun releases don't stay in print very long. We assume that's what allows them to keep a steady stream of new jams flowin', and this week brings us three significant LPs by Eternal Tapestry, Little Claw, and Wet Hair. Eternal Tapestry's new LP The Invisible Landscape is full of righteous krauty spacerock jams, not too dissimilar from Hawkwind or Can on speed. The Little Claw LP entitled Human Taste is a great song-based experimental rock jam with lots of repetition. At times Little Claw sound a bit like a female fronted Spacemen 3. If that's not enough to sell you on this one, we don't know what is. Last but not least, Wet Hair's Glass Fountain is a nice slab of post- Racoo-oo-oon experimentalism that's quite appealing. All three of these Not Not Fun (read: Fun) releases come with our utmost recommendation.
When Cacaw went on tour last year, they all came back raving about a band called Drunkdriver. When pals like the folks in Cacaw start talking about a band, we know we'd better look into it. So we did. Thanks, Cacaw, for turning us on to one of the most brutal noise rock bands this side of Rusted Shut. Their single Fire Sale is back in print and we have a few of them for those of you who might be interested in having your faces melted off. Seriously, if you dig Mayyors, Francis Harold & the Holograms, Cacaw, Unholy Two, or anything noisy and rhythmic, we highly recommend checking out Drunkdriver. The Fire Sale 7" is a great starting point.
In addition to all these items we've been going on about, we've also received the vinyl version of the Eddy Current Suppression Ring debut LP, a beautiful Elizabeth Cotten reissue on Folkways, Boredoms Super Roots 10" LP on Thrill Jockey, the new Shannon & the Clams 7"s on Weird Hug. We've also restocked the scorchin' George Brigman Blowin' Smoke 7" (it's autographed!) and a bunch more sweet items, all listed below, of course. As far as the label releases go, we're blowin' through Mako Sica LPs and the first pressing of the Cheveu LP is almost gone. There are a few white vinyl copies left for local customers only. First come, first served, no holds.
One last thing to add this week is Jim's Pick of the Week. Here's the review:
Greg Cartwright - Live At The Circle A + bonus 7" [Dusty Medical Records]
Here at Permanent we love our noisy punk and doom and psych-outsider what-the-fuckery, but we also love well-crafted songs that are delivered with genuine heart & soul. Greg Cartwright is a man who has been around the block a few times. He was and is one-third of the legendary Oblivians, he's a founding member (with Jack Oblivian, aka Jack-O) of the Compulsive Gamblers, and most recently the leader of the Reigning Sound (whose recent release Love And Curses is a big fave around here). But he's finally dropped a solo acoustic set on us that focuses squarely on his songs and the depth they carry. It's called Live At The Circle A and is named for the small Milwaukee venue where it was recorded. The swell Beer City (that's Milwaukee, y'all) label Dusty Medical Records issued it, and it comes with a bonus 7" that has Mr.Cartwright live on the radio in Milwaukee backed by the terrific combo The Goodnight Loving. The bonus 7" is also done up Goner Records-style, with a label and picture sleeve that you swear came from Eric Oblivian himself. It's a damn fine release and Reigning Sound fans are advised to act quickly as these probably won't last long.

That'll do it for this one. Thanks again for reading and we hope to see you all real soon!

Greetings Friends,
Well, we did it. We got all the LPs and CDs and a select few miscellaneous items in the inventory system and we're checking people out through the computer on the counter rather than that old clunker of a register we've used up until this point. We're getting more and more comfortable using it and it's efficient as heck. This isn't the most exciting subject in the world, but we spent a lot of time getting it going and we just can't help ourselves. The new inventory system will also allow us to list a hefty portion of our merchandise online via the Permanent Records webstore. More details on that to follow in the near future. In other exciting news, we hosted Mako Sica's Record Release in-store on Saturday and it was a total mind blower. Their new record Live on Mayday at Strobe is our in-house label's ninth release. We'll discuss it's virtues later in the featured release section of the update. Black Wyrm Seed joined them and they complimented each other very well. A great time was had by all. Many thanks to the bands and those of you who came out to show your support! Next week, Unholy Two will be performing on Sunday. We're super stoked for this one. Fans of the noisier side of rock would be amiss to miss this one. We hope to see you there. Now, on to the goods...
This week brings us a slew of new releases, some of which, we're super stoked to be sharing with you. Those respective releases include the limited edition Mako Sica LP on our label, the vinyl version of Spectrum's latest EP, a brand new imported Dan Melchior LP, 3 Mudhoney vinyl reissues, a brand new Times New Viking full-length, a bunch of sweet new 7"s, an incredible obscuro psych reissue, a couple new Mississippi Records related LPs, a ridiculous amount of sweet restocks.
Mako Sica is a Chicago band that features two former members of the underappreciated post-rock group Rope. However, post-rock doesn't really describe the sounds that Mako Sica make. Caucasian Desert Rock is the ridiculous sub-sub-genre that immediately came to mind the first time we saw them. Basically, Mako Sica sound like the more recent Dead Man Soundtrack-style Earth, if Earth were a Not Not Fun band. Live on Mayday at Strobe is Mako Sica's vinyl debut and it includes two sparse, but engaging, side-long tracks of trancelike psychedelia heavily influenced by the furthest out side of the Impulse Records catalog. At times, Mako Sica's sound is reminiscent of a Free Jazz-ier Group Doueh. As you can see, Mako Sica are a unique sounding group that are not easy to pigeonhole. Don't waste time trying to figure out where this is going to get filed in your collection as this release is limited to 120 hand-numbered, hand screen printed, hand stamped, hand assembled copies. Each copy includes a digital download of the entirety of the Strobe session recordings and a couple of super sweet inserts. We released it, so it's obviously comes with our highest recommendation. First come, first served.
Spectrum (aka Sonic Boom, aka Pete Kember) was a founding member of all-time Permanent faves, Spacemen 3. To simplify things, he's the John Cale to J Spaceman's Lou Reed. In our humble opinion, like Velvet Underground, none of the post-breakup Spacemen records, are as good as the original*, but we think that the War Sucks EP is about as close as Spectrum has gotten to re-evoking the Spacemen 3 spirit. War Sucks was previously discussed in these updates on CD and it's now available on two-color limited edition vinyl. Thanks to Mind Expansion for making it happen. Like the Spacemen 3 DJ Tones 12"s, these won't last long folks. In other Spacemen 3 related news, Fire Records recently announced the reissue of 3 Spacemen 3 LPs. In mid-November, unless things get delayed, you'll be able to purchase brand new copies of Sound of Confusion, Perfect Prescription, and Performance for under $20 a pop! Finally! We can't wait. Luckily, there's this Spectrum 12" to tide us over until then. Also, you can get your fix of this sort of stuff at our DJ gig at the Whistler. We're calling it Getting Drunk to Spin Records to Get Drunk To in homage to the ultimate astronauts and we're spinning all sorts of stuff fans of the Spacemen would love. We'll be spinning every second Sunday starting in November. Come on out and we'll take you to the other side.*Editor's Note: You can't fuck with Metal Machine Music.
Dan Melchior has been pumping out solid material for over a decade now. He's got a couple of great In The Red LPs from the early 2000's and his 2xLP on S-S from a couple months ago is killer as well. Melchior is the epitome of prolific and he's back at it with a brand new full-length on Topplers Records out of the UK titled Obscured by Fuzz. It's all brand new material and it comes very highly recommended, especially for fans of fuzzy garage rock.
Speaking of fuzz, Mudhoney is a band that used distortion in all the right ways. Mark Arm and crew should've been MTV darlings in 1991 instead of (or at least aloingside) Nirvana. Touch Me I'm Sick is a classic that dates back to 1988 and proto-Mudhoney grungers Green River go all the way back to '84. For whatever reason, the mainstream blow-up never really happened for Mudhoney. Anyhow, much of Mudhoney's vinyl has been out-of-print for a while now, but Sub Pop in their infinite wisdom have remastered and reissued their debut EP and first two LPs with digital download codes included! Now you can own Superfuzz Bigmuff, Mudhoney, and Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge on wax for less than $14 each. Superfuzz Bigmuff is only $11.99, y'all. What are you waiting for? The grunge revival? Oh wait, has that already happened? Who cares! Mudhoney's been there for you all along and now the vinyl's there for you too.
We mentioned a new Times New Viking 7" a couple weeks back and how it was to be followed up with a brand new, slightly more mature and darker sounding full-length. Well, it's here and it's still as good as we said it was back then. Born Again Revisited is sure to make many best of '09 lists and it's available on CD and LP right now. R-E-C-O-M-M-E-N-D-E-D!
Many thanks to Sundazed for nicely reissuing the obscure Hapshash and the Coloured Coat Featuring Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids LP. If that title grabbed your attention you should definitely take note of this release. It's an outsider, inept, psychedelic masterpiece. Hapshash and the Coloured Coat were primarily known as a bitchin' graphic design team back in the late '60s, but they also released two records during that time period. Featuring... was the first and it's a total mind blower. No bullshit. This record is what people like us who look for weird records hope to hear when they see an album cover like this one. Fans of the out side of the Velvets and the less precise side of Krautrock should definitely take note because, after all, A Mind Blown is a Mind Shown.
Mississippi Records out of Portland is one of our favorite reissue labels these days. They brought back the Clean and the Rats on wax, and introduced us to some International stuff which may have otherwise gone unheard; all on our favorite format to boot. It's been a little while since we've had a new release from the label, but fret not, their back with a sweet new release. Mata La Pena is a comp of International 78s designed as a sequel to their I Don't Feel At Home In This World Anymore compilation. There's a Thai track, some Indonesian stuff, and even a rare blues cut by Blind Mamie Forehand included. All of this is packaged in a beautiful textured jacket with Folkways-style, paste-on, color artwork. Mississippi's previous release, the String of Pearls comp, is back in stock as well. Not on Mississippi per se, but done in a very similar style is the Domino Sound reissue of De Kift's Krankenhaus. Originally released only on CD in 1993, Krankenhaus is De Kift's second album and it's not an easy one to describe. We'll let the label take over here: The music on the album is difficult to describe, there simply aren't the reference points to make it easily classifiable. Thematically, Krankenhaus is a guided tour through the terror and tedium of war and its effects. Musically, it does have guitar, bass, and drums, but there is also a brass section, scrappy and heartfelt, making plenty of appearances throughout, and some woodwinds, an accordion, piano, violin, and hand clapping show up here and there. Imagine a scene from a Berlin cabaret of the 30s as written by the New Deal's Federal Theater Project. But, in, well, Dutch. Domino Sounds' A Orillas del Magdalena (Coastal Cumbias from Colombia's Discos Fuentes) is also back in stock. Feel free to, come in, have a listen to one or all of these releases, and decide for yourself which ones belong in your collection.
Also, there are way more cool new releases this week than we have time to discuss here. See the lists below for all the deets on the new stuff and all the restocks we've brought in this week. As usual, used stuff is steadily flowing out through the recent arrivals bins and we're always offering cash and/or store credit for quality used items. If there's anything your looking for that you don't see here, feel free to drop us a line. Thanks! Until next week...
