Well last night saw the first Department S live appearance since March 1982. We played under an assumed name on the bottom of a bill in London. We'll be playing several of these type of shows to get ourselves match fit so to speak. It went better than any of us could have hoped and this is a small taster of the set. Going Left-Right sounding more Krautrock psychedelia than it ever did all those years ago. Fan fucking tastic! There might even be a bit of Hawkwind in there somewhere.....who'd have thunk it? Thanks for those who heard about the show coming along and supporting us, it really helped our nerves and a special thanks to The Fallen Leaves for letting us gatecrash their gig. XxX

Department S ‘wonderful day’ (sartorial).

Long time viewers of these musings won’t be to alarmed or indeed surprised to hear that we’ve somehow separated both the press release and the sleeve from this here CD promo. Good start eh? Well a little rooting around on the wibbly wobbly web reveals an abundance of facts about this gem like four track release which all things being well will be descending on the greater record buying populace sometime early next month. In fact we lied - we just checked the norman records site because if there’s one available they’ll always reproduce said press blurb as part of their sales spiel. Anyway apparently there are only 200 copies pressed up of this on a by all accounts tasty looking coloured vinyl styled CD. The band aside featuring the core song writing partnership of Roxy and Herbage also includes original Dept S drummer Stuart Mizon as well as Messrs Matlock and Pirroni. Good call then eh. Features as said four tracks - two which are the radio edit and full length version of lead out track ’wonderful day’. a belter it is too, positively radiates with a throbbing sun clipped radiance. A blistering slab of up and at you feel good grind laced up with bracing fanfares, gritted struts and blessed with the kind of tension racked impending three chord edginess much found adorning records bearing the name of the Ruts about their wares. The full length version features a teasingly brief blast of smouldered 70’s styled dirty funk-age at roughly 2.20 in - all said there’s no denying the fact that it’s a speaker spanking master class in soul shot Mod. That said our favoured cut is the wiring and frantic ‘clap now’ which by all accounts was intended to be the follow up single to the immortal ‘is vic there’ though sadly the record company got cold feet and passed up on it. This seizure stricken beauty is a hot wired frantic and fiery white funk godsend that imagines a studio fist fight between the Godfathers, Higsons, the Fire Engines and the Nightingales - a bruising stew of skewed and schizoid austere disco-fied dislocation. Damn I could kiss the hip shimmying bastard. Throw in a rather spiffing cover of Alvin Stardust’s ’my coo ca choo’ which in all honesty sounds like the pixie prince of Glam Marc Bolan strutting his enviable stuff and you have something that may well sizzle your stereophonic system into surrendering swoon fits.

August 10th saw the new Department S release and it's a 4 track EP. It's released on the usual download sites and also on limited edition 'coloured vinyl' CD.

CD's available for order from www.hmv.com and Sartorial Records Ebay Store.

You get 4 tracks for your buck and they are:

Wonderful Day - Radio Edit
Clap Now - The unreleased follow up to 'Is Vic There?' (Produced by Mott The Hoople)
My Coocachoo - Micko Mix
Wonderful Day - Album version

As ever, it will be released on Sartorial Records. Wonderful Day includes guest appearances from Glen Matlock and Marco Pirroni. How about that for Punk rock Royalty!

The version of 'Clap Now' was recorded in 1980 as the follow up to 'Is Vic There?' and was produced by Buffin and Overend from Mott The Hoople.
The track was rejected by the record company (Great peice of art lads, but not a single) and this see's it's first ever official release. Digitally remastered and everything. This is a totally different recording to the version released on the Department S album, 'Sub-stance'. Fans of Interpol and Franz Ferdinand should hear this track to see where it all started. :)

Our latest update told of the last recording session we did and mentioned that mixing was meant to commence in January.

Well January has turned to February, infact starting date February 25th. But the main focus of that day will be rerecording vocals to the new track 'Outside' due to a rewriting of the lyrics. It's now called 'The Fire'.

So bear with us and we'll have something for you to listen to. It's a great big Glan Rock homage and is a Roxy/Herbage composition.Spandau Ballet drummer, The Great John Keeble, guests for us and grateful we are too.

We're halfway through recording that album now, but it has to be said, it's a bit like pulling teeth. Getting everyone into the studio/Country on the same day is a bastard. But we struggle on and still hope to have something on the streets by May. In the mean time we'll be releasing a single as soon as this track is mixed. Still not sure what we'll release yet. It was intended to release 'Wonderful Day' (Which you can hear on our page) but we're so chuffed with the new stuff we've done, we're all confused now.

It's been great to see so many new friends join us of late. The traffic coming through the site has taken a bit of a leap in the last 8 weeks as well. It's nice to be loved. Keep sending your messages, we love hearing from you all.

Love on ya - XxX

Well, it went incredibly well at the weekend, considering we weren't overly well organised to start with.

2 new tracks recorded.

'Outside Looking In' , which is a huge Glam Rock stomper, complete with thunderous drums, crunching guitars, a hook to die for and La La La's at the end!

'God Squad Saviour' is about as dark and psychedelic as it gets. All acoustic guitars, manic feedback and drones, with one of the most menacing vocals ever to grace a Department S song.

If your kids are playing up you can lock them in a dark room with this one and they'll never play up again.

Produced as Ever by Terry Edwards, drums courtesy of John Keeble of Spandau Ballet (The boy hits those drums fucking hard). We thank both muchly.

We only have untreated rough mixes at the moment and won't be able to mix until mid December earliest, so can't let you all hear them yet. But we are chuffed to bits at how this session worked out.

LP on track (fnarf) for Spring Release on Sartorial.

Greetings friends of the 'S'. We thought it would be a good idea to post an update after a period of inaction.

Having got our arses into gear in April with a view to putting together a live show, we were forced by circumstances beyond our control to put Dept S action on hold. This was by no means a welcome break as we didn't want to lose momentum but you know how it is, and shit happens.

However, we are now getting back into shape and will be back in the recording studio in September to record 2 more tracks for the projected LP release in spring 2009.

We are pleased to announce that Shanne Bradley, legendary bass player with The Nipple Erectors has agreed to join us in the studio as the latest in a line of distinguished guests. We hope to add another big name to the proceedings.

We're not sure what will happen with our planned live dates, having lost Stuart Mizon on drums this week, it's going to cause us a challenge but we're confident that all will end well. Please watch this space for further updates.

Oh, by the way, we are planning to issue a new single in November. Just got to decide what it will be.

XxX
