PHILLIPDRUMMOND PRESENT THE BATTLE OF LOS ANGELES GRINDTIME BEAT BATTLE

These are the samples for the beat battle which will be two 45 second rounds (45 seconds per
beat/flip).  There is a third song to flip in case of overtime.  Bring your beats on
CD and on an ipod with a cord you can hook up to a DJ mixer (I suggest 1/8th inch to RCA male).

Also bring the originals, in order, so if you go first you can play a 20 or 30 second snippet then the flip.  I'm pretty certain that I am not going but I will communicate with the host and with Lush One.  feel free to email me about this battle or my monthly beat battle in SF at

philthy@philthybeats.com

upcoming battles include:

Thursday Jan 7th @ Element Lounge 1028 geary in SF BEAT FICTION (Pulp Fiction soundtrack) battle
and
Thursday Feb. 11th @ Element Lounge Psychedlic Rock Battle/Pd Birthday Party

Check my blog on philthybeats.com (forwards to my myspace) for the thread with 10+ beat tapes
from past beat battles.  Also check the blog for lots of free samples including free drums!

BEAT FICTION SAMPLES:

YOU CANNOT CLICK ON THE LINK ABOVE, YOU MUST COPY AND PASTE INTO YOUR BROWSER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rules: Each competitor is assigned a group and corresponding song for the first round.  The top competitors will advance to the second round which has a corresponding sample pack in the zip on the sendspace link above.  The same is true for the third and final rounds.  You may add synths and such but the only samples you can use are from the songs in the zip file and dialogue from the movie...the idea is to see what you can do with the samples/songs from the movie.  You can use whatever drums, etc. you want.  ALL BEATS ARE 1:00.  Bring ORIGINAL beats in case of tie-breakers.

I have just returned from France after my first European tour with my group "Rollin' Rockers" which consists of MC's Lush One and Plex Rock.  I made all the beats with some engineering and instrumental assistance from Perpetuum aka Mugshot and Poetiq.  BIG THANKS AND SHOUTS to Chinese Man Records who was responsible for flying us out, putting us up, getting us shows and just being dope peeps and friends.  They are by far one of the illest, most up and coming, popular crew of DJ's and producers in France right now.  Literally if you walk up to someone on the street in Paris and say their name people are like "I LOVE ZE CHINESE MAN RECORDS!!!"  And that's not an exaggeration at all, this happened to us multiple times.

So I shot tons of video footage and there will be more video blogs and footage to come about our travels and adventures.  Below is the first installment about our first show in Rennes---big ups to my homeboy Matthieu Peresse, Le Chantier the venue where we rocked),  FPLS and Petits Lieux de Spectacles who helped to pay us to rock the show.  Okay so here's how it goes down: we got to SFO, get on a plane, fly for 12 hours, land in Charles de Gaulle near Paris, take the high speed train directly to Rennes (2 more hours of travel), meet Matthieu Peresse at the train station and he hooks up some chronic for the guys.  We go to the apartment where we meet the dude who helped us to do the show...we each have our own room and Plex and Lush smoke as they are FIENDING for a smoke and then we head to the venue.  Here we have dinner and drinks, then I do a dj set with Serato.  We rock our first set and there are probably 40-50 people there.  This is our first time EVER performing, not to mention practicing material we just recorded, but it still comes off well.  So well that the people demand we do it AGAIN.  So we do, and people call their friends because they're going nuts.  In between sets I'm selling tons of cd's, tshirts, etc. while simultaneously DJ'ing.  People call MORE of their friends and MORE people come and the little bar is starting to get really filled up.  The crowd demands we do the set AGAIN for a third time since even MORE people have come.  We do it again and by this time kids are singing along love the songs even more and knowing the lyrics, going NUTS.

Literally the windows of the place are fogged up completely and people are tagging in the condensation.  Lush decides to open up the mic for the French MC's in the house to get their rappin on and I'm playing all beats that I've made mixing them for the MC's to rap on---people are going nuts.  This really ill dude gets on the mic and RIPS it (see video below).  After that, Lush and Plex are being offered all sorts of chronic, women coming at them, etc. and I'm hustling merch like a madman.  I do an electro set with tracks never played out before by my homey Woohoo! (NYC DJ and producer) and it's great.  I'm moving even more merch and glad I brought this stuff with me.  We kick it at the bar till late night, then go home on the super late night.

We get up the next day, catch our train to Paris and are peepin the graff along the way.  We arrive in Paris to be greated by Sly Dee (the producer of Chinese Man Records) and High Ku (one of the killer DJ's and literally one of the best DJ's I've ever seen), along with maybe one other dude.  They take us to Quick, the French version of fast food and we go hard on it.  Let me tell you something about France.  They have cuties working there.  French women are the truth...I knew this already, but it was reiterated by being there.  Damn.  We get in a taxi and give the taxi driver a copy of our rough EP "BANGBANG!" and he's slappin that and Plex's mixtape and lovin it.  We arrive at the house, meet Dub Youth and the main dude Heru and the rest of his Indonesian homeys who are the most polite coolest dudes.  We also meet Ze Mateo, the other main DJ in the crew and tons of the CMR staff.  They are also cool as hell.  We meet Vincent aka Vinnny aka Wu-Tang Killa V.  I'm giving out Lower Hater tshirts to everyone and MFDR tshirts to all the main CMR guys and Vinny off-top give me 50 Euros for the entirety of my CD collection and tshirts.  I knew right then he was a really good guy.  But yo, Vinny is one of the illest cats you will EVER meet.  I mean on every level.  Dude is a seriously nice and generous guy.  He is the kind of cat that will go to the end of the earth for you.  He is also one funny guy.  You CANNOT dislike Vince, no matter how hard you try, he is hater-proof.  You'll see him on the video blogs.

Okay so we get to this quatro-plex of an apartment/house and we're staying on the top floor.  It is dope.  The CMR dj's hook up some more chronic for the guys and they're giving us beer, etc.  We go over the set for the huge release party at Elysee Monmarte for the next night.  The after party is at Trabendo.  This crazy ill DJ who will open for CMR the next night named Tchicky Al Dente is there and tells me there is a party poppin off and if I want to DJ bring mp3 cd's.  I was like "word."  I convince Plex and Lush, who are tired as hell, to come with me.  Long story short: we cut the line, cruise past the bouncers into one of Paris' hottest, hardest to get into clubs with sooooooooooooo many fly girls.  I mean DAMN.  Tchicky is dj'ing and playing Cali stuff and gives us a bottle of vodka.   He plays this CRAZY drum and bass remix of the surf song from pulp fiction and the crowd is going crazy.  he is such a dope dj.  Tchicky loops a beat and has Plex kick a freestyle and the crowd is going crazy again.  I hop on the cd-j's, play a couple of beats and then convince Lush and Plex it's time to rock.  WOW.  the crowd goes nuts.  We perform out set and it's just electrifying how much people are into it and how hard Lush and Plex are killing it.  We walk home very late, meet several different people along the way who freak out when we mention Chinese Man Records.  The 1500 person show the next night is already sold out so we tell them to come ot the after party where we will rock as well.

Get up the next morning, pack all the stuff into a van, go to the venue, set stuff up, do soundcheck.  Meanwhile, I'm making a custom beat for the intro of our set with a vocal sample Lush has found from W.C. which says "everywhere we go then showin us love/and by the time we leave they throwing up dubs!"  I'm buzzin off of a couple beers, but pretty nervous.  Nonetheless the beat comes out really well even though I'm only mixing it on computer speakers.  CMR gets interviewed twice before the show.  They are rockstars for real.  So I have put my friend from SF (originally from France) as well as two old family friends (two beautiful, lovely daughters of my dad's ex-french girlfriend) and Matthieu Peresse on the guest list and I'm trying to figure out where they are since the venue is HUGE.  I manage to find them and it's a total trip since I haven't seen them for like 10 years.  Okay so here's the set-up...huge old venue with probaly 80-foot high ceilings, huge stage at the front.  They've given out old school 3-D glasses to everyone and have crazy visuals projected on a screen behind the performers.  So I'm running around filming stuff, and when Lush and Plex run on stage to perform their verse after CMR gives the cue with a shotgun then the audience goes crazy when they run out on stage.  I'm filming and it's truly unbelievable seeing a sea of people.  They kick some dope freestyles, get off stage.  After this we pack up, go to the venue for the after-party called the Trabendo.  It is a SICK club with 700+ person capacity and I'm setting up my dj stuff when I realize my computer is not goin to work with the Serato mixer.  Luckily I've brough

The Chrismakwanzkah Battle on Thursday Dec. 10th is all premade one minute original beats (they can be sampled beats, I'm just not requiring competitors to flip samples I give them except for the final round) EXCEPT for the final round.  For the final round you must make a minute long beat from one, or as many of the samples in the zip file below.  We ARE going to make a beat tape for this one so I suggest you flip as many of the songs in the zip file below as possible.  That way for the final round hopefully we can have more than one, and most importantly we have more for the beat tape.  Please email me all your beats for the beat tape of the flips that you do with the songs from the zip file ASAP with you name under "artist" in the ID3 tag (you can simply do this in Itunes by typing in the text) and "Phillipdrummond Presents Christmakwanzakah Beat Battle" for the "album" section.  For the link to samples below, don't try to click on it and expect the link to work because myspace blocks links---you must copy the actual link text and paste it into your browser then download at "regular speed."

It's going down at Element Lounge at 1028 Geary bet. Van Ness and Polk in SF @10:30pm with 9:30pm check-in.

I suggest competitiors bring at least 12 original beats (more is always better) in addition to their flip for the final round.  There are always ties and depending on the number of competitiors and time we may do 2 beats per round in the first round or not.  Friendly Traveler and Raymundo from Megahertz on KZSU are judging and the crowd is the tiebreaker/third judge, so bring all your peoples.  I'm giving $1 per paying person to each producer for every paying person who announces at the door to the door girl that they are there for that producer.  In addition I'll be performing with my group Rollin Rockers (Lush One and Plex Rock of Grind Time/Grindtimenow.com and Del Mon Crew) a live set for which I did all beats.  It's hosted by FLO.

Additional upcoming battles include:
THIS SATURDAY DEC. 5TH CHARITY FUNDRAISER Beat Battle FOR BEATS, RHYMES AND LIFE THERAPEUTIC HIP HOP ACTIVITY PROGRAM (not to be confused with my event of the same name).  This is ONLY original beats, meaning beats you've already made and yes they can be sampled.  Distortion2Static is judging along with the audience and the winner gets featured on D2S and interviewed by them.  Cash prize as usual.  It's going down at Club 6 on 6th street in SF between Mission and Market @10:30pm with 9:30pm check-in.

And on Jan 7th (First thursday of the month) is BEAT FICTION a beat battle sampling the soundtrack to Pulp Fiction.  Hit me up if you want to get in:PhotobucketPhotobucketFor
