We had a good run. Actually, a great run. Evan and I started playing music together in 6th grade... now we're in 11th. We played shows for 300 people, we played shows for 5. We played with bands that we look up to and admire, band like Free Yon, Much The Same, The Gaslight Anthem, Polar Bear Club, A Wilhelm Scream, American Steel. We befriended bands like The Swellers, Pax Romana, A Lesser Evil, Frame By Frame and so many others. Over 30 something shows... countless releases... everything came together when our good friend Andrew Robie joined the band. We released our first ep, got terrible reviews, and yet people still downloaded and listened to it. Even if it was only a couple hundred people!

Throughout our last school year we wrote 5 songs.

As I remember it, "3:10" was written almost completely by Evan. He brought it to a practice and Andrew wrote lyrics. It's still my favorite of our songs.

"That's Life" was written by Evan and I together, the second guitar part on the chorus by myself and some structural things also by me, while Evan wrote most of the rhythm for the song. Andrew again did lyrics, and I had a few lines.

"Matter Of Fact" never intended to be so long, I don't know how that came about. Evan wrote this one again with me. Andrew did the lyrics, and I had the "Tonight tonight" line.

"Bering Strait" was Evan and I again. I was upstairs while Evan played that thick riff. I came downstairs and we made it into a song. Evan never liked this one as much as I did but the recording of it turned out much better than either of us expected.

"Monterey Jackass" was Evan and I only. We did this after Andrew left the band. During a trip to New Jersey in August we hung out with our friends in Free Yon, and saw a bunch of my family. A catch phrase between us became being a "Monterey" as in, Monterey Jack chesse. It's a term for someone being completely clueless of their surroundings and/or lack of an inteligent life. We wrote it in a day on our 8 track in the basement. It's not serious and it was a lot of fun to do.

"Choice Words" was written by Evan and I coming up with that intro. It took us a few days to get the rest to flow out, but then we had a song.
...
We recorded these all in one day last June. When we got the mastered versions back we weren't 100% behind it. The drums didn't sound as I'd planned... "3:10" sounded different than we had gone for live. Basically it was only about 70% of where we had wanted the sound to be. We bought the masters from the studio to remix/master the songs and rerecord vocals and such.

This was going to be used as a demo for our full length as False Alarm but the mixed results put that on hold. After Andrew left we spent a few months drifting, writting little and finding ourselves unmotivated to finish an album.

Then we decided to break up and release the demos as they are.

Most likely we'll never play these live, or will they ever see any true release.

This is one day in the studio in June 2009, enjoy.
...
Although False Alarm has broken up, Evan and I will be forming a new band very soon with some close friends. Our last bassist Donovan Johnson will be a part of this project.

Information will be available soon.

Thanks! - David

Interview questions answered by drummer, David.

Tell us a little about the band history.

Evan (guitar) and I (David, drums) have been playing for what seems like forever. We got Andrew on bass in June 2008 and from there we've been a solid band.

I see that you guys are coming out with a new full length album in awhile, what can we expect from that record?
Well first of all, it'll be a while. We have tracking almost completely done for 5 songs but we are going to be remixing and remastering as well as redoing some vocals for those songs. We are just starting to write the second half of the album, but we only have two songs done for it. The album will be like the two demos we released in last June, it's more rock based then our old stuff but it's still better than anything we've ever done.

Who are your inspirations? And why?
Theres are a lot. First and foremost for me, The Beatles. I love The Beach Boys, Neil Young, The Who, Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and all of those classics. In terms of sound and stuff though, Green Day, Set Your Goals, Blink-182, The Swellers, and all that pop punk stuff. The Gaslight Anthem, Against Me!, Kings Of Leon, and Paramore kind of round out the rock side of things. We're basically a mixture of that fast pop punk stuff and the more rock based stuff. I'd be lying if I denied we listened to Paramore sometimes haha.

What is the most played song in your iPod?
Evan: "Angry Johnny And The Radio" - The Gaslight Anthem
David: "When I Come Around" - Green Day
Andrew: "This Is My Everest" - The Swellers

If you guys were not playing music, what do you think you will be doing?
I'd probably be way more into politics but, really, all any of us want to do is play music. We just want to have a goodtime and hope this lasts for a good run.

Lastly, any shoutouts?
Thanks to the dudes in The Swellers for all the advice on playing music. And of course all of our friends in the following bands: Free Yon, A Lesser Evil, Overated, Two Cow Garage, Sanus Valde, Frame By Frame, The Danger Brothers, Completely Smitten, Viewmaster 3D, and A Big Crash. Thanks for reading, and check us out at www.falsealarmohio.com for a bunch of free music!

I don't have a blog and my life is far too boring to make one. This will do.

From around November till May, Evan and I wrote 5 songs. Mostly they start with Evan coming up with an opening and me throwing my two cents in here and there, Evan gets more credit than I though. We work through them with Andrew who writes lyrics, sometimes with, and sometimes without me. Writing is fun but time consuming and getting more complex as we develop our ideas more and more. These 5 songs we wrote will end up our first true full length album which will come out in the Fall. We booked the studio time a while back, maybe two months ago and today was the big day, and now I'll overview.

Thursday, June 11th 2009

We planned to practice all day, 9:30 in the morning till whenever we felt comfortable to record. We ended up starting at 10-something and before 12 Andrew's bass string broke. We ended up driving to Guitar Center and getting back around 1:30 or so. We ate lunch and practiced pretty solidly from 2 till 5 or 6 when we went to Chipotle to celebrate recording. Mostly uneventful day.

Friday, June 12th 2009

At 1:30 am I found out our money situation wasn't quite what we wanted and needed to record, in the end it was okay though. I got up at 9:30 because Andrew texted me about recording, I tried to go back to sleep but was woken up again at 10:15 or so by Evan. Evan and I packed up the van with everything by 11 and Evan went home. We were set to record at 12 with Andrew meeting us at the Studio. My wonderful Father who was going to take us didn't show up at 11:50 and we were supposed to be leaving much sooner, all hell broke loose but my equally wonderful Mother ended up taking us. We met Andrew and apologized to Colin (our Producer, Engineer, Mixer, and Mastering genius) for being late. He didn't care; he's still getting paid. We set up and by 1:40 or so we had good drum tones, guitar and bass sounds and were ready to start. We started tracking at 2.

I never get nervous for shows anymore. Whether we're playing for 2 or 200 people, it hardly phases me, but I was extremely nervous to record again because I know whatever I play will be the version of the song I will hear for the rest of my life. We started with a song called "That's Life", my favorite and one we will be releasing on our website soon (FalseAlarmOhio.com). We went with, I think, the second take and then double tracked guitars. We did this for 4 more songs.

After the live track and second guitars were tracked Evan spent sometime doing his overdubs. This is around 4 and for the large part of this (and his time double tracking) Andrew and I read old Entertainment Weekly magazines while eating mints and cheeze its and other food we brought (cheapo Pizza rolls were summerlunch).

After this Evan and I now sat on the couch in the control room while Andrew did all the vocals (also first takes, mostly) and we joined him for some back ups and stuff. We finished with tambourine and clap overdubs.

Colin and I talked when I was setting up the drums, he asked me if we were still going for a 'punk' sound. I told him we were but we were also more of a rock band now, he asked if I meant similar to the Foo Fighter to which I agreed and said Green Day for another example of a more powerful rock sound. Because of this Colin produced this in a similar style to the new Green Day album - crunchy guitars, think-powerful drums and so on.

We paid and left the studio around 7. We'll get masters next week sometime. I'm very stoked. If you read everything you are either awesome or have too much time on your hands. Thanks! - David

It has been about one year as a full band with Andrew on bass and vocals. In that time we wrote and recorded the EP (recorded in around 4 hours - all first takes). Made friends with bands who are now some of our best friends: Free Yon, A Lesser Evil and Overated. Openned for some of our favorite bands (The Gaslight Anthem, A Wilhelm Scream, Polar Bear Club, American Steel, among others) and became friends (on some small level) with them. More recently we've became good friends with Frame By Frame and Tribalism, as well as the Rock Factory. This year we have connected with Pax Romana, deadtown, No RiSK, and Festering Fiesta not only because they are nice dudes but because we enjoy their music. During this last year we had our EP picked up on WeNevaStop Records and "Social Contract" featured on a Death To False Hope Records compilation. We have had some where around 300 song downloads and lastly we sold some cds here in Columbus and all the way out west across the country.

That is a pretty good first year if you ask me. We have a chunk of songs finished and are way stoked to record them. The second year will only be better.

Big thanks to all the bands mentioned, especially Ryan and Overated for the advice, friendship and all around supportive influence on our little band. Another big thanks to our parents for putting up with our music and shows; especially my Dad for helping set up and tear down every show, as well as driving us to all our shows.

Thanks eveyone! - David

Also, we are NOT playing Bernie's on April 28th, although Bernie's/other bands seem to think we are... Mildly strange.

Hey, so we have a live album coming out soon. Nothing special, the live record is just the audio from our live video of our Battle Of The Bands performance. We will have the entire live show posted in this here blog very soon. (If not tonight, tomorrow). The show itself was sweaty, sloppy, fast, and energetic. One of our better shows and the audio is actually decent. The album which will be posted/finished/etc in the next week or so has the entire False Alarm EP, 3 new songs and an intro, most of which has been unheard until now. The 3 songs will appear on our next album. Much more soon. Yeah, let's get our economy moving again.

We haven't played many shows lately because we've been busy with school, and writing our new record. We are making a huge amount of progress and are totally stoked on the new material. The new album will be done around late summer or early fall, we'll see. We are however playing the Bexley High School battle of the bands, which raises money for the choir to travel to Europe, so come out if you can cause it'll be awesome! No comment on the guitarist situation but we'll see where that leads. Have a nice weekend/day and stuff. Get the new Rise Against and eat burritos! Happy new year!

So we recorded Tallahassee acoustic in my basement, the mix is a little off cause I couldn't get it be loud. Seriously it was playing games with me, anyway the song ain't to bad even if the vocals are a little soft and you have to turn it up all the way to hear it. Robie sings it too. Fun. New (as in actually new) songs up in the next few months, already finished with a couple of new songs and they sound like wanna be Free Yon songs so look out for that. Not really, Free Yon sucks. Goodbye for now, shows in January/February.
