Friends/fans, we (Roommate) will play our first full-band show in
many months next Monday at the Empty Bottle. As is customary on Monday nights at said venue, the show is FREE.
http://emptybottle.com

Joining us on the bill are Chandeliers (who will be celebrating the release of their Dirty Moves LPand DRMWPN (pronounced "dreamweapon").

We wholeheartedly endorse the music of these ensembles--this lineup was carefully crafted to provide the absolute maximum in auditory pleasure to those in attendance. We will play several brand-new slow jams and a few other songs from our album-in-progress GUILTY RAINBOW plus a back-catalog gem or two. I expect that Chandeliers will light a raging yet carbon-neutral fire on the dance floor, and that DRMWPN will transport you to a mysterious, euphoric dimension of pulsating sound, a dimension that can only be conjured on a stage packed with approximately 15 of Chicago's most righteous instrumentalists.

You might be aware that the amazing Red Red Meat are playing a free show at Millennium Park's beautiful Pritzger Pavilion the very same night. As friends and fans of Red Red Meat and its ilk, it pains us to know that we will miss their show in order to prepare for ours. It also concerns us that our friends/fans might think that they have to miss our set in order to see that of Red Red Meat--we are playing first, after all. However, the Empty Bottle will allow us to start around 9:45--Red Red Meat should be done by 9:30, leaving a solid 30 minutes for you to get from downtown to the Empty Bottle to catch the last two thirds of our set.  Should you choose to undertake such a journey via bicycle, please do not hurry or take unnecessary risks! Chicago drivers often ignore or violate the right-of-way of bicyclists--I know this from personal experience.

Many of you do not live anywhere near Chicago, but you are receiving this message in case you have friends in the area who might wish to know about a spectacular FREE music show of this nature.

Announcements of other Roommate-related developments will be coming soon. Thank you for your time.

Warmest regards,

Kent Lambert

The Hideout hosts first-time

3-WAY BIG BENEFIT
an eclectic musical showcase celebrating social change groups
Logan Square Neighborhood Association, Tamms Year Ten Coalition,
& Young Chicago Authors.

(Chicago) -  On Saturday, May 9, 2009, The Hideout Inn (1354 West Wabansia Ave., Chicago) will host the “3-Way Big Benefit”, a day-long music showcase featuring a wide array of Chicago bands. The event will be hosted by Chicago’s own true soul poet and emcee, Avery R. Young, and will conclude with a dance party DJ’d by soul and hip hop favorite Itch13. The showcase will benefit three local organizations – Logan Square Neighborhood Association, Tamms Year Ten Coalition, and Young Chicago Authors – all working toward social change in various capacities. Members of the beneficiary organizations will be on hand to provide information and sign up volunteers. Homemade treats will be available in limited quantities. A raffle will be held for prizes such as a Roommate LP and t-shirt, lovely Mexican vases, a bomber of Half Acre's yet-to-be released Daisy Cutter Pale Ale, homemade jams and bread, recording time at Glamour Studios, tickets to Links Hall, and more. Cover is $12. http://hideoutchicago.com.

As a long-standing supporter of progressive causes and host to community benefits, the Hideout struck organizers Kent Lambert and Kristen Cox as the ideal venue for this event. Cox and Lambert chose these beneficiary groups for their social justice missions and their timely and urgent community initiatives. The Logan Square Neighborhood Association preserves and protects community schools, affordable housing, community spaces, and offers health and citizenship access as well as financial and employment counseling for the Logan Square and Avondale neighborhoods. YOUNG CHICAGO AUTHORS

Young Chicago Authors (YCA) encourages self-expression and literacy through creative writing, performance and publication. YCA provides student-centered, artist-led workshops free to youth ages 13-19 in schools and communities. Our process emphasizes artistic development, mentorship, and creating safe spaces where a young person's life matters. We believe that through their words, young people can promote tolerance and remove barriers to transform their lives and society. YCA is also the producer of Louder Than A Bomb, the largest teen poetry festival in the country, for which it is a subject of a feature length documentary by Siskel/Jacobs Productions. YCA will be hosting the national teen poetry slam, Brave New Voices, in Chicago this Summer!  http://youngchicagoauthors.org

LOGAN SQUARE NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION
Founded in 1962, Logan Square Neighborhood Association (LSNA) is a multi-issue, grassroots, membership organization, which unites a diverse group of institutions, residents, and other stakeholders to address the challenges facing its community, focusing on education and school reform, health, affordable housing and economic development, immigration, and community spaces and the arts. Serving the multi-ethnic communities of Logan Square, Avondale, and Lathrop Homes, LSNA's mission is to unite institutions and residents to build and protect an excellent place to live, work, play, raise children, run a business, and worship.  http://www.lsna.net

TAMMS YEAR TEN COALITION
Tamms Year Ten is a coalition of concerned citizens who have come together to protest the misguided and inhumane policies at Tamms C-MAX. In 1998, the first prisoners were transferred from prisons across the state to Tamms C-MAX in Southern Illinois. This new prison, designed to keep men in permanent solitary confinement, was intended for what the IDOC called a one-year "shock treatment." Now, ten years later, over one-third of the original prisoners have been there for a decade in isolation—no phone calls, communal activity or contact visits. Tamms Year Ten and Rep. Julie Hamos have introduced a Supermax Reform Bill (HB 2633) to the Illinois House, and 27 legislators have signed on as co-sponsors. The bill would prohibit seriously mentally ill prisoners from supermax incarceration, establish clear procedures for how men are transferred to and from the supermax, and limit terms of solitary confinement to one year, unless doing so would pose a risk to guards or other inmates. Amnesty International recently called for immediate changes at Tamm C-MAX and endorses HB2633 as a first step. Tamms was also featured in a March 30, 2009 New Yorker article on the devastating effects of long-term solitary confinement. http://yearten.org

Mission Creek presents
Extra Action Model
Roommate
Swingers
Demas Lemus
at The Picador, 330 E. Washington St., Iowa City, IA
9 PM.

Back when I was a student at the University of Iowa, there was a rock club
called Gabe's Oasis. It hosted some of the finest music performances I've
ever seen. Gabe's became The Picador a couple of years ago, and judging by
the lineup above, it is still the site of mind-blowing live shows. To be
honest, I don't know anything about Extra Action Model, Swingers & Demas
Lemus other than that they are Iowa City bands. I do know that the fine
people at the Mission Creek Midwest Festivalarranged for them to share the bill with us,
so I think it's safe to say
that this show will be a doozy. $6 cover.

*Sunday, July 27*

XYZ Affair
Roommate
Meteorade
at High Noon Saloon, 701 E. Washington Ave., Madison, WI
8 PM. $7.

One of Roommate's very first shows was at the High Noon Saloon almost
exactly four years ago, when we were just a keytar, a musical saw, a
Gameboy, and my scraggly voice. I'm very pleased to return to the HNS with
new songs, sound, and bandmates.

For these four shows, for reasons of fuel economy and vehicle cargo space,
we'll be playing as a three piece: Seth Vanek (drums, casio, ukelele,
singing), Gillian Lis=E9e (bass, singing) and yours truly (keytar, casio,
singing, talking too much in between songs).

Have a wonderful week.
