first of all, we are not breaking up, disbanding, done with it, etc.

there will be a short hiatus.
our bass player jill harrison is moving to oregon to be a professor of sociology, and our last show with her will be the aug 22 carabar show in columbus. we are also begin to work on our second record with jon chinn at central city recording very soon, which we are super excited about.
we will be welcoming the one and only gretchen tepper back to the band as the bassist.
also i am getting married at the beginning of october, which i/we will also need time for.

so we're not done. we're starting our next record. aug 22 will be our last show for a little while, but not permanently. cool?

hello all,

rosehips are pleased to announce that we are benefiting and raising awareness for naturopathic medicine in central ohio. specifically, we will be benefiting the
Columbus Clinic of Naturopathy.

friday, april 10 @ the treehouse. 10pm:
ease the medic:
www.myspace.com/easethemedic
nuclear children: www.myspace.com/nuclearchildrenmusic
rollo: www.myspace.com/rollofour
rosehips

also joining us will be the naturopathic physicians from the Columbus Clinic, Tamara Strickland and Jennifer Ball. they will be present at the venue to provide information.

so, what exactly is a naturopathic physician, and why should there be a whole entire rock show devoted to them?

basically,
to obtain their training, naturopathic physicians, attend accredited naturopathic medical schools. there they learn to employ a more holistic means of healing the body in which they look for root causes of health problems, and treat the whole person instead of just the symptoms. oftentimes they will use a combination of natural supplements, herbs, botanicals, homeopathics, and dietary changes.  more specific info can be found via the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

naturopathic physicians provide many benefits to people and the community, and this is especially true in the states where they are licensed. unfortunately ohio is an unlicensed state for them, which makes the choice to pursue this type of healing more difficult for everyone involved. the more awareness and funds we can raise, the more we can allow their medicine to flourish and hopefully one day obtain the proper licensure.

through this show, we hope to bring awareness to the columbus music community. we hope that you will join us.

<3,
rosehips

this is reposted from my photo-a-day blog, hence the "photos day..."
<3 - cassie

we originally had four dates scheduled, but our DC show fell through because apparently that town sucks. so, we left wednesday for new york city to take our time driving, and stop at a hotel along the way.

bt drove us in this:
the vagisaurus
lovingly dubbed "the vagisaurus."
it's pink on the inside too.

also, GPS on my cell phone is my new best friend. i love maps and navigation, so for me it's like the coolest thing since sliced bread.

photos day 246: "from a motel 6"

photos day 246: from a motel 6

and, uh...how could i possible resist using this title? we went to SHEETZ, drank some whiskey and coke, and watched some cartoon network. i also discovered my lack of preparedness while rummaging through my suitcase in the hotel, which i LOATHE while traveling. i forgot my belts, my swim suit, my soap, and my FACE WASH of all things. i am super-militant about what i put on my skin, it has to be all natural, and i can't go just anywhere to buy that kind of face wash.

the next day, the vag was stuttering in new jersey (of course) so the fine folks of wherethefuckarewe, new jersey directed us to a gulf station to have it worked on that day. the vag had a bad spark plug, fortunately they fixed her up for a minimal charge and we were on our way. interestingly enough, there were pot-bound vegetables growing around the station.

photos day 247: approaching nyc

photos day 247: approaching nyc

i have been to nyc many times since about the age of 19, and it seems as though i have entered the city by a different way / mode of transportation each time...although this may be the second time in a big van. also, i cannot for the life of me figure out which bridge this is on the internet.

we played lit lounge in manhattan, which honestly was kind of a bust. it looked like it was going to be a cool place from their website, and people's suggestions, but no dice. there were three out of town bands and the local decided to cancel, so there was no local support, i.e. NO CROWD. we made $20. i tried to get us some press, but that also didn't seem to work out.

here is the view from the make-out cave:
lit lounge

we met up with curtis for a place to crash in brooklyn, since the next night's show was there, and honestly i am starting to enjoy brooklyn more than manhattan anyways. we partied into the night, and then bt and i decided to sleep on the seven-story roof which was AWESOME until about 8:00am when the sun tried kill us in the face. it was a night i didn't mind waking up every hour, as i could see the tips of the manhattan skyline and the sky changing colors towards day.

the next morning, we went to heaven eat records:
eat records!

eat records is used record shopping, and local/organic breakfast. and may i just say, GREENS FOR BREAKFAST!. veggies, garlic, greens, bacon, and i'm totally stealing the idea. there were also eggs, and toast pieces with RHUBARB PRESERVES. it was killer, and probably the healthiest thing i ate on the tour.

photos day 248: rosehips do coney island

photos day 248: rosehips do coney island

for some reason, i don't ever make the connection that you can get to the ocean while you're in nyc. probably because...it's nyc. i looooove the ocean, particularly because i love things that make me feel small.

coney island

we basically just played in the waves...which some of us, especially me, learned probably wasn't such a good idea later on, but oh well. the ocean!! right? anyway, we tooled around astroworld as well which was fortunate as they closed it down four days later. we went to the freak show, and i pulled a SWORD out of a sword swallower lady's throat. yeah. very intense. and kinda hot.

the cyclone, astroworld, coney island

later that night, we played to a room full of screaming people at rockstar bar in brooklyn. i'm not sure exactly what happened, but i do know that perhaps half the room was displaced columbusites hungry for something midwestern. whatever happened, i didn't particularly care what had happened before or what was going to happen after. that one night was worth the 10 hour drive.

jon set everything up and let us crash at his place because he is totally awesome, and it was also methodist's first show:
methodist
they sounded like motorhead playing shellac songs.

cobretti also played, drumming mayhem ensued:
cobretti

we are breakfast at kate's joint the next day, which i somehow end up eating at a lot when i go to the city. we watched outside as hurricane remnants moved into the city, and we drove through them with a leaky van to philadelphia.

photos day 249: philadelphia

photos day 249: philadelphia

the artist had a plaque, but unfortunately the name escapes me now. i had never been to philadelphia, but one thing i know now is that there is stuff like this EVERYWHERE and it is AWESOME.

we played with the jellyhearts, which is lorn's other band, and the tough shits at the tritone. i have posted a couple things on here about the tough shits previously, but all in all they make me extremely happy. they are rock n roll. we partied a little at their house afterwards, then some of us spent the night at our new friend kyle's apartment.

photos day 250: pennsylvania on the way home

would i do this again? sure. i love to travel and i love to play music. i believe it to be a lot harder when you are DIY though. with no guarantees, it's sorta like gambling. i just feel that we were very lucky to have generous and hospitable friends in the places that we went to.
my immune system took the inevitable traveling dive that i try hard to avoid while on the road, but meh. while i had a lot of fun, touring isn't exactly a relaxing vacation! :)

DAY 1: YOUNGSTOWN...

050908_01_RT16.jpg

damn i hate this drive, youngstown or cleveland. it always sucks, and this was certainly no exception as it took us four hours to get to youngstown. half the time it was pouring rain too, but i guess at least it wasn't snowing this time.

death crazed teenage super heroes

night 1: cedar's lounge / youngstown, OH

we played first, people seemed to like us alright. even after a couple years, i still can't seem to shake the fact that i think that people expect us to suck or not be so good because we are girls. this is amplified when out of town and nobody knows who we are. i do have a good time proving people wrong most of the time if that is the case.
"for girls, you really rock..." yeah, whatever.

pictured is death crazed teenage superheroes, and i thought they kicked ass. we will bring them to columbus. we also played with the maxi pads, from pittsburgh. they were alright, not really my thing.

the afterparty went something like this...

050908_04_RT16_filtered.jpg

then this...

ROLL THE NINES!! i think they made it up. correct me if i'm wrong.
it's basically a very intense face-off, and you roll until somebody gets a nine. i lost.

DAY 2: YOUNGSTOWN TO CLEVELAND...

051008_02_RT16.jpg

jill's parents were kind enough to let us crash at their place in youngstown again, and i woke up to this. got some mega vitamin d while lolling about in the yard and talking to the boy on the phone. lorn and i discovered the guiness of lilacs as well, the super dark purple ones.

check out this guy...

051008_03_RT16.jpg

we went shopping in the afternoon at gabriel brother's. sooooooo much awesome stuff for cheap. we scored a bunch of american apparel shirts for merch...rosehips tshirts coming soon!!

then it was on to the royal treatment at uncle larry's house. seriously.

uncle larry

uncle larry made us this...

blackened salmon, homemade mac n' cheese, sauteed snow peas and water chestnuts in orange liquor.
wine.
ice cream and black coffee for desert.
can anyone say FOOD COMA?? omg, i couldn't stop eating, it was the best thing i have eaten in like a month. i can only hope to be able to cook this good someday.

and, bogart!

bogart

the flats

when you get to pats in the flats in cleveland, some questions you might ask are "is this place closed?" or "is this where we dump the bodies?" it's a super old building in the middle of industry, usa.

we took some band photos with steve, which i have yet to see, but down the street was an awesome bridge...

the flats

and the BFB, or "big fucking boat."

BFB

pat's in the flats

night 2: pat's in the flats / cleveland, oh

there were supposed to be five bands, but one of them didn't show. golden ox, thee tv oh dees, the twilight, then us. it wasn't packed by any means, but there were enough people there that it wasn't depressing. siblings, lauren g, 3/4 hotchacha, rick from minute of arc all came. the people who hadn't seen us before or didn't know us or both seemed to really like it. plans are in the works for us to come back to cleveland for an awesome show.

jovana

jovana from hotchacha took us out on what was left of the town( it was about 1:30am) to a place called edison's. she is crazy as hell, but in a good way. i cannot wait for the lady show at the end of this month, they are coming to columbus to play with us and the jellyhearts at carabar. hell yes.

we crashed at the house of cha...

the house of cha

jovana made us tasty pasta and gave us beds to sleep in.

DAY 3: THE I-71 BLUES...

the only thing that is more lame than i-71 is nebraska.

goasis

this is the goasis, the newest in truck stop technology. it's bright as all hell inside, and it has an information kiosk. i have fond memories of this place as it involved the first time i really hung out with the boy, or thee time i hung out with the boy.

tornado sirens of death

this is in front of my house while the tornado sirens of death were going off. apparently there was a touchdown in delaware. i wasn't kidding when i said every time i hit the 270 line there is a line of dark clouds, looming ominous weather.

but it's not like i'm not glad to be home...
it's the best part of traveling.

November Loop member finds Rosehips fills bill

Published:Thursday, May 8, 2008

By John Benson

The Columbus band is 'a little bit more rock,' the bassist said.

When Canfield native Jill Harrison moved to Columbus to work on her sociology Ph.D. at Ohio State University, the bassist wasn't necessarily looking to join another band.

Already a member of Youngstown act November Loop, which now plays less than a handful of shows annually, Harrison enjoyed playing music but was beginning to concentrate on her studies.

However, things changed in December of 2006 when while bartending at Columbus' Cara Bar, a local act took the stage and piqued her imagination.

"One night there was this band – three girls and a guy – playing named Rosehips," said Harrison, a 1996 Canfield High School graduate. "They were really, really good. The sound kind of grabbed me. It was a little bit more complicated than I thought it would be. It kind of had a bit of the early '90s feel that I liked.

"So after the show I talked to the band, and it just so happened they were looking for a female bass player at the time."

Within two weeks, Harrison was playing with Rosehips and never looked back. The quartet recently released its self-titled debut, which includes band favorite "The Dead Are Watching."

Considering Rosehips now features an all-female lineup, some people naturally may think the group must sound like The Donnas. Harrison said the band actually transcends pigeonholing with a unique sound that dates back to an alt-rock heyday.

"I think a lot of people might say, 'Look, an all-female group. They're cute and they can play and they might get some notoriety because of that,'" Harrison said. "But it was different for me when I saw them play for the first time. I was like, 'They're cute but gosh, they can really play well, too.' Sometimes people don't really expect that."

She added, "Our label is called Pillow Fight Records, and I think that's pretty accurate. It hits you hard but it doesn't really hurt."

Harrison admits she still loves playing with November Loop, but Rosehips offers her a new challenge.

"There is some overlap, but I think November Loop is a little bit more shoegaze," Harrison said. "I think both of them have roots in the early to mid-'90s [sound], but in different ways. November Loop took it more of the slow dive Galaxy 500 route and Rosehips is more of The Smashing Pumpkins. It's a little bit more rock."

Rosehips returns to Youngstown for a Friday gig at Cedars Lounge. Even though Harrison recently turned 30, she's both optimistic and realistic about her musical future.

"I mean, I'm always open to take some time off from school if we got picked up on a cool tour, but I'm in school for a reason," Harrison said. "I realize it's hard to be a rock star, but I love it and it's definitely a good outlet. I have to always be playing music, so I'm glad I found the Rosehips. We turned into a really kind of serious band."
